AL-AHZAAB

ن الرحيم بسم الله الرحم

VERSES 23 & 24

هم من المؤمنني رجال صدقوا ما عاهدوا الله عليه هم نبه قضى من فمن ي نتظر من ومن {23ت بديلا } بدلوا وما

From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they made a pact with Allah upon. So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23]

إن الله كان ي عذب المنافقني إن شاء أو ي توب عليهم ليجزي الله الصادقني بصدقهم و {24غفوراا رحيماا }

So, Allah would Recompense the truthful due to their truthfulness, and He would Punish the hypocrites if He so Desires to or He may Turn to them (Mercifully). Surely, Allah was always Forgiving, Merciful [33:24]

Fulfilment by Amir Al-Momineenasws and hisasws companions

حممد بن العباس، قال: حدثنا عبد العزيز بن حيىي، عن حممد بن زكريا، عن أمحد بن حممد ابن يزيد، عن سهل بن عامر البجلي، ام، عن أيب إسحاق، عن احلارث، عن حممد بن احلنفية )رضي اهلل عنه(، و عمرو بن أيب املقدام، عن عن عمرو بن أيب املقد

كنت عاهدت اهلل عز و جل و رسوله )صلى اهلل عليه و »جابر، عن أيب جعفر )عليه السلم(، قال: قال علي )عليه السلم(: ارث على أمر و فينا به هلل و لرسوله، فتقدمين أصحايب و خلفت آله( أنا، و عمي محزة، و أخي جعفر، و ابن عمي عبيدة بن احل

‘Abu Ja’farasws having said: ‘Aliasws said: ‘Iasws Covenanted with Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww – myselfasws, and myasws uncle Hamzaasws, and myasws brother Ja’farasws, and myasws cousin Ubeyda Bin Al-Haaris – upon a matter that we shall fulfil it for the Sake of Allahazwj and for Hisazwj Rasoolsaww. So myasws companions preceded measws and Iasws was behind them when Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic so Intended.

هم من قضى نبه محزة، هم فأنزل اهلل سبحانه فينا: من المؤمنني رجال صدقوا ما عاهدوا الله عليه فمن و جعفر، و عبيدة و من . فأنا املنتظر، و ما بدل لوا ت بديلا «.ت تبديلمن ي نتظر و ما بد

So Allahazwj the Glorious Revealed regarding us: From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they pacted with Allah upon. So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow [33:23] – Hamzaasws, and Ja’farasws, and Ubeyda, and from them is one who awaits, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23]. Iasws am the awaiter, and did not change with any alteration’.1

وعنه، قال: حدثين علي بن عبد اهلل بن أسد، عن إبراهيم بن حممد الثقفي، عن حيىي بن صاحل، عن مالك بن خالد األسدي، ه عبد اهلل بن احلسن، عن آبائه )عليهم السلم(، قال: و عاهد اهلل علي بن أيب طالب، و محزة عن احلسن بن إبراهيم، عن جد

بن عبد املطلب، و جعفر بن أيب طالب )عليهم السلم( أن ال يفروا من زحف أبدا

And from him (Sharaf Al Deen Al Najafi) who said, Ali Bin Abdullah Bin Asad narrated to me, from Ibrahim Bin Muhammad Al Saqafy, from Yahya Bin Salih, from Malik Bin Khalid Al Asadi, from Al Hasan Bin Ibrahim,

‘From his grandfather son of Al-Hassanasws, from his forethersasws having said: ‘And Allahazwj Covenanted with Ali Bin Abu Talibasws, and Hamza Bin Abdul Muttalibasws, and Ja’far Bin Abu Talibasws that they shall never flee from an army, ever!

هم من قضى نبه محزة استههد يوم أحد، فتموا كلهم، فأنزل اهلل عز و جل: من المؤمنني رجال صدقوا ما عاهدوا الله عليه فمن لوا ت بديلا يعين و جعفر استههد يوم مؤتة و من هم من ي نتظر يعين علي بن أيب طالب )صلوات اهلل و سلمه عليه(، و ما بد

الذي عاهدوا اهلل عليه.

So, all of them accomplished, and Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Revealed: From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they pacted with Allah upon. So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits, [33:23] – meaning Ali Bin Abu Talibasws, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23] – meaning that which they had made a pact with Allahazwj upon’’.2

Fulfilment by the Momineen

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن حممد بن سليمان، عن أبيه، قال: كنت عند أيب عبد اهلل )عليه حممد بن يعقوب: عنيا أبا حممد، لقد ذكركم اهلل يف كتابه، فقال: من المؤمنني : »-و ذكر احلديث إىل أن قال -السلم(، إذ دخل عليه أبو بصري. رجال صدقوا ما عاهدوا الله علي هم من ي نتظر و ما بدلوا ت بديلا هم من قضى نبه و من ه فمن

Muhammad Bin Yaqoub, from a number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Muhammad Bin Suleyman, from his father who said,

‘I was in the presence of Abu Abdullahasws, when Abu Baseer came to himasws, - and he mentioned the Hadeeth up to where heasws said: ‘O Abu Muhammad! Allahazwj has Mentioned you (Shias) in Hisazwj Book, so Heazwj Said: From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they made a pact with Allah upon. So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23].

إنكم وفيتم مبا أخذ اهلل عليه ميثاقكم من واليتنا، و إنكم مل تبدلوا بنا غرينا، و لو مل تفعلوا لعريكم اهلل كما عريهم، حيث يقول «.جل ذكره: و ما وجدنا ألكثرهم من عهد و إن وجدنا أكث رهم لفاسقني

You (Shias) fulfilled whatever Allahazwj had Covenanted you upon, from ourasws Wilayah, and you did not replace others with usasws, and had you not fulfilled, Allahazwj would have Rebuked you just as Heazwj Rebuked others, where Heazwj is Saying: And We did not find in most of them any (faithfulness to) the Covenant, and We found most of them to be mischief-makers [7:102]’’.3

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Sinan, from Nusayr Abu Al Hakam Al Khash’amy,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullahasws having said: ‘The Momineen are of two (types of) Momineen. So there is a Momin who ratified with the Covenant of Allahazwj and loyal with Hisazwj Stipulation, and that is in the Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic: From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they pacted with Allah upon. That is the one who would not be hit by the horrors of the world and the Hereafter, and that is from the one would interceded and would (be in no need) to be interceded for.

hit by the horrors of the world and the horrors of the Hereafter, and that is from the one who would be interceded for and he would not be interceding (for anyone else)’.4

A number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ja’far Bin Muhammad Al-Ashary, from Abdullah Bin Maymoun Al-Qaddaah, who has narrated the following:

Abu Abdullahasws says that the Rasool Allahsaww said: ‘O Aliasws! The one who loves youasws, then dies, so he accomplished his vow. And the one who loves youasws and has not died yet, so he is waiting. And the sun does not rise nor does it set except that it comes to him with sustenance and the Eman’. And in another copy (it says): ‘Light’.5

The fulfilment by the companions of Al Husaynasws at Karbala

يف كتاب مقتل احلسني اليب خمنف ان احلسني عليه السلم ملا أخرب بقتل رسوله عبد اهلل بن يقطر تغرغرت عينه بالدموع وفاضت على خديه ث قال: )و منهم من قضى نبه ومنهم من ينتظر وما بدلوا تبديل(.

In the book, MaqtAl-Al-Husaynasws

of Abu Al-Makhnaf –

When Al-Husaynasws was informed of the murder of hisasws messenger Abdullah Bin Yaqtar, a torrent of tears flowed from hisasws eyes and flowed onto hisasws cheeks. Then heasws said: ‘So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23]’.6

يف كتاب املناقب البن شهر آشوب ان اصحاب احلسني عليه السلم بكربل كانوا كل من أراد الروج ودع احلسني عليه السلم وقال: السلم عليك يا ابن رسول اهلل فيجيبه: وعليك السلم ونن خلفك ويقرأ )فمنهم من قضى نبه ومنهم من ينتظر(.

In the book Al-Manaqib of Ibn Shehr Ashub –

‘The companions of Al-Husaynasws at Karbala, whenever each one of them wanted to go out, said farewell to Al-Husaynasws and said, ‘Peace be upon youasws, O sonasws Rasool-Allahsaww’. So heasws answered them: ‘And peace be upon you, and weasws are right behind you’. And heasws recited ‘So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits [33:23]’.7

VERSE 25

وكان الله قويا وكفى الله المؤمنني القتال ورد الله الذين كفروا بغيظهم مل ي نالوا خي راا {25عزيزاا }

And Allah Repulsed those who committed Kufr in their rage. They did not attain any good, and Allah Sufficed the Momineen in the battle, and Allah would always be Strong, Mighty [33:25]

The Altered Verse

عن سفيان الثوري، حممد بن العباس، قال: حدثنا علي بن العباس، عن أيب سعيد عباد بن يعقوب، عن فضل بن القاسم الرباد، «. و كفى اهلل املؤمنني القتال بعلي و كان اهلل قويا عزيزا»عود، أنه كان يقرأ: ، عن مرة، عن عبد اهلل بن مسعن زبيد اليامي

Muhammad Bin Al Abbas said, ‘It was narrated to us by Ali Bin Al Abbas, from Abu Saeed Abaad Bin Yaqoub, from Fazal Bin Al Qasim Al Baraad, from Sufyan Al Sowry, from Zubeyr Al Yami, from Marat,

‘From Abdullah Bin Masoud used to recited: and Allah Sufficed the Momineen in the battle, by Ali, and Allah would always be Strong, Mighty [33:25]’.8

القوم، عن عبد اهلل بن الطربسي: يف معىن الية: قيل: بعلي بن أيب طالب، و قتله عمرو بن عبد ود، و كان ذلك سبب هزية مسعود. قال: و هو املروي عن أيب عبد اهلل )عليه السلم(.

Al-Tabarsy –

Regarding the Meaning of the Verse, said, ‘By Ali Bin Abu Talibasws, and heasws killed Amro Bin Abd Wadd, and that was the reason for the defeat of the people (enemies) – from Abdullah Bin Mas’ud. And it is (also) reported from Abu Abdullahasws’.9

وعنه، قال: حدثنا حممد بن يونس بن مبارك، عن حيىي بن عبد احلميد احلماين، عن حيىي بن معلى األسلمي، عن حممد بن عمار «.و كفى اهلل املؤمنني القتال بعلي»مسعود يقرأ: بن زريق، عن أيب إسحاق، عن زياد بن مطر، قال: كان عبد اهلل بن

‘Abdullah Bin Masoud used to recite: and Allah Sufficed the Momineen in the battle, by Ali, and Allah would always be Strong, Mighty [33:25].

و -لم(، و إن املهركني حتزبوا، و اجتمعوا يف غزاة الندقو سبب نزول هذه الية: أن املؤمنني كفوا القتال بعلي )عليه الس و هو: -القصة مههورة، غري أنا نكي طرفا منها

And the reason for the Revelation of this Verse is that the Momineen were suffice in the battle by Aliasws, and that the Polytheists had formed an alliance and had gathered in a military expedition of Al-Khandaq (the ditch) – and the story is well known, apart from that I am relating the fringes of it, and it is: -

فلما كان يوم أن عمرو بن عبد ود كان فارس قريش املههور، و كان يعد بألف فارس، و كان قد شهد بدرا، و مل يههد أحدا، الندق خرج معلما لريى الناس مقامه، فلما رأى الندق، قال: مكيدة، و مل نعرفها من قبل.

Amro Bin Abd Wadd was the famous horseman of Quraysh, and he was equated with a thousand horsemen, and he had attended (the battle of) Badr, and did not attend (the batter of) Ohad. So when it was the day of Al-Khandaq, he came out as an instructor for the people to see his position. But when he saw the ditch, he said, ‘A ploy, and we do not recognise it from before.

، و نادى: هل من مبارز فلم بجبه أحد، فقام علي )عليه السلم(، و قال: و محل فرسه عليه، فعطفه، و وقف بإزاء املسلمني «إنه عمرو، اجلس»فقال له: «. أنا، يا رسول اهلل»

And he got his horse to carry him upon it and he crossed over, and paused by the side of the Muslims, and called out, ‘Is there anyone for duel?’ But, no one answered him. So Aliasws stood up and said, ‘Iasws, O Rasool-Allahsaww!’ Hesaww said to himasws: ‘It is Amro. Be seated’.

،«إنه عمرو، اجلس»فقال له: «. أنا، يا رسول اهلل»فنادى ثانية، فلم بجبه أحد، فقام علي )عليه السلم(، و قال:

He called out for the second time, but no one answered him. Aliasws stood up and said: ‘Iasws, O Rasool-Allahsaww!’ Hesaww said to himasws: ‘It is Amro. Be seated’.

و إن كان »فقال: «. إنه عمرو»، فقال له: «أنا يا رسول اهلل»فنادى ثالثة، فلم بجبه أحد. فقام علي )عليه السلم(، و قال: فاستأذن النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( يف برازه، فأذن له.« عمرا

He called out a third time, but no one answered him. Aliasws stood up and said: ‘Iasws, O Rasool-Allahsaww! Hesaww said to himasws: ‘It is Amro’. Heasws said: And even if it was Amro’. So heasws sought the permission of the Prophetsaww to duel him, and hesaww permitted himasws.

[ الفضول، و أعطاه ذا الفقار، و عممه قال حذيفة )رضي اهلل عنه(: فألبسه رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( درعه ]ذات «.تقدم»عمامته السحاب على رأسه تسعة أدوار، و قال له:

Huzeyfa said, ‘Rasool-Allahsaww put hissaww own armour, Zat Al Fazoul, on himasws, and gave him (the sword) Za AlFiqar, and turbaned himasws with hissaww own turban,

and fastened around hisasws head with nine circuits, and hesaww said to himasws: ‘Proceed!’

برز اإليان كله إىل الهرك كله، اللهم احفظه من بني يديه، و من خلفه، و عن »فلما وىل، قال النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: «.يينه، و عن شاله، و من فوق رأسه، و من حتت قدميه

So when heasws turned, the Prophetsaww said: ‘The Eman, all of it is going to duel against the Polytheism, all of it. O Allahazwj! Protect himasws from in front of himasws, and from behind himasws, and from hisasws right, and from hisasws left, and from above hisasws head, and from beneath hisasws feet.

يا ابن -فقال: غريك« أنا علي بن أيب طالب»قال: ابن عبد مناف قال: «. أنا علي» قال: فلما رآه عمرو، قال له: من أنتال أكره أن أهرق -و اهلل -و لكين»من أعمامك أسن منك، فإين أكره أن أهرق دمك. فقال له علي )عليه السلم(: -أخي «.دمك

So when Amro saw himasws, he said to himasws, ‘Who are youasws?’ Heasws said: ‘I am Aliasws!’ He said, ‘Son of Abd Manaf?’ Heasws said: ‘Iasws am Ali Bin Abu Talibasws’. He said, ‘Other than youasws, O son of my brother, from your uncles older than youasws, for I dislike to spill yourasws blood’. Aliasws said to him: ‘But, by Allahazwj, Iasws do not dislike spilling your blood’’.

قال: فغضب عمرو، و نزل عن فرسه، و عقرها، و سل سيفه كأنه شعلة نار، ث أقبل نو علي )عليه السلم(، فاستقبله علي )عليه السلم( بدرقته، فقدها، و أثبت فيها السيف، و أصاب رأسه فهجه، ث إن عليا )عليه السلم( ضربه على حبل عاتقه،

فسقط إىل األرض، و ثارت بينهما عجاجة،

He (the narrator) said, ‘Amro was angered, and he descended from his horse and hamstrung it, and he took out his sword as if it was a flame of fire, then came over near to Aliasws. Aliasws faced him with hisasws shield, but lost it, and the sword (of Amro) got embedded in it, and hisasws head was hit, and it was scarred. Then Aliasws pulled a rope of his neck, and he fell down to the ground, and a cloud of dust was raised between them.

«.قتله، و الذي نفسي بيده»فسمعنا تكبري علي )عليه السلم(، فقال رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(:

Then we heard the exclamation of Takbeer by Aliasws, so Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘Heasws killed him, by the Oneazwj in Whose Hand is mysaww soul!’

النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: ، و أتى به إىل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و وجهه يتهلل، فقال لهقال: و حز رأسهفلو وزن اليوم عملك بعمل امة حممد لرجح عملك بعملهم، و ذلك أنه مل يبق بيت من املهركني إال و دخله -يا علي -أبهر»

«.وهن، و ال بيت من املسلمني إال و دخله عز

He (the narrator) said, ‘And his head fell off, and heasws came with it to Rasool-Allahsaww, and hisasws face was beaming. So the Prophetsaww said to himasws: ‘Receive glad tidings – O Aliasws! If yourasws deed of today were to be weighed with the deeds

of the community of Muhammadsaww, yourasws deed would be heavier than their deeds’. It was so, that there did not remain any house of the Polytheists except feebleness entered into it, and there was no house of the Muslims except might entered into it.

قال: و ملا قتل عمرو، و خذل األحزاب، أرسل اهلل عليهم رحيا و جنودا من امللئكة، فولوا مدبرين بغري قتال، و سببه قتل عمرو، فمن ذلك قال سبحانه: و كفى الله المؤمنني القتال بعلي )عليه السلم(.

He (the narrator) said, ‘And when Amro was killed, and the confederates abandoned (the war), Allahazwj Sent a wind upon them and armies from the Angels. So, they turned back without fighting, and the reason was the killing of Amro. Therefore, from that, the Glorious Oneazwj Said: and Allah Sufficed the Momineen in the battle, by Ali [33:25]’.10

وروى احلافظ منصور بن شهريار بن شريويه بإسناده إىل ابن عباس، قال: ملا قتل علي )عليه السلم( عمرا، و دخل على رسول اللهم أعط »اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( و سيفه يقطر دما، فلما رآه كرب، و كرب املسلمون، و قال النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(:

«. قبله، و مل يعطها أحد بعدهعليا فضيلة مل يعطها أحد

And it is reported by the memoriser Mansour Bin Shahriyar, by his chain going up to Ibn Abbas who said,

‘When Aliasws killed Amro, and Aliasws came over to Rasool-Allahsaww and hisasws sword was dripping blood, hesaww exclaimed Takbeer when hesaww saw himasws, and the Muslims (also) exclaimed Takbeer. And the Prophetsaww said: ‘O Allahazwj! Grant Aliasws such a merit not having been Granted to any one before himasws, and will not be Granted to anyone after himasws’.

يا رسول اهلل، إن اهلل عز و جل يقرأ عليك السلم، و يقول »جربئيل )عليه السلم(، و معه من اجلنة اترجة، فقال: قال: فهبط «. لك: حي هبذه علي بن أيب طالب

He (Ibn Abbas) said, ‘So Jibraeelas descended, and with himas was an orange, and heas said: ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww! Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Conveys the Greetings to yousaww, and is Saying to yousaww: “Welcome Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws with this!”

قال: فدفعها إىل علي )عليه السلم(، فانفلقت يف يده فلقتني، فإذا فيها حريرة خضراء، فيها مكتوب سطران خبضرة: حتفة من لب إىل علي بن أيب طالب. الطالب الغا

He (Ibn Abbas) said, ‘So hesaww handed it over to Aliasws, it fell apart in hisasws hand into two pieces, and there was green silk (piece) in it, wherein was inscribed in two lines in green: “A gift from the Seeker (Al-Talib) the Overcomer (Al-Ghalib) to Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws’’.11

VERSES 26 & 27

وأن زل الذين ظاهروهم من أهل الكتاب من صياصيهم وقذف يف ق لوهبم الرعب فريقاا {26ت قت لون وتأسرون فريقاا }

And He Brought down those backers from the people of the Book from their fortress and Cast awe into their hearts. A group you killed, and a group you made captives [33:26]

شيء قديراا وكان الله على كل وأورثكم أرضهم وديارهم وأموالم وأرضاا مل تطئوها {27}

And He Made you to inherit their land, and their houses, and their wealth, and land you had not trodden on, and Allah would always be Able upon all things [33:27]

و آله( املدينة، و اللواء معقود، أراد أن يغتسل من فلما دخل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليهعلي بن إبراهيم: و نزل يف بين قريظة: عذيرك من حمارب، و اهلل ما وضعت امللئكة ألمتها، فكيف تضع ألمتك إن اهلل يأمرك أن ال تصلي »الغبار، فناداه جربئيل:

بلغوا محراء األسد. العصر إال ببين قريظة، فإين متقدمك، و مزلزل هبم حصنهم، إنا كنا يف آثار القوم، نزجرهم زجرا، حىت

Ali Bin Ibrahim –

And it was Revealed regarding the Clan of Qureyza. So when Rasool-Allahsaww entered Al-Medina, and the flag was tied up, hesaww intended to wash from the dust. Jibraeelas called out to himsaww: ‘Yoursaww nobility is from a warrior, and Allahazwj did not Place the Angels for its community, so how would Heazwj Place it for yoursaww community? Allahazwj Commands yousaww that yousaww should not pray Al-Asr Salat except by the Clan of Qureyza. So Ias am preceding yousaww, and will shake them in their fortresses. We are in the footsteps of the people. We will restrain them with a restrainment until yousaww reach Hamraa Al-Asad’.

-قال: بأيب أنت و امي«. ما الرب، يا حارثة »فخرج رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، فاستقبله حارثة بن النعمان، فقال له: ذلك جربئيل، أدعوا يل »هذا دحية الكليب ينادي يف الناس: أال ال يصلني العصر أحد إال يف بين قريظة. فقال: -يا رسول اهلل

«. عليا

Rasool-Allahsaww went out, and Haaris Bin Al-No’man met himas. Hesaww said to him; ‘What is the news, O Haaris?’ He said, ‘May my father and my mother be sacrificed for yousaww – O Rasool-Allahsaww – Dahiyat Al-Kalby is calling out among the people, ‘No one should pray Al-Asr except by the Clan of Qureyza!’ So hesaww said: ‘That is Jibraeelas. Call Aliasws for me’.

فجاء أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم(، «. ناد يف الناس: ال يصلني أحد العصر إال يف بين قريظة»فجاء علي )عليه السلم(، فقال له: فنادى فيهم، فخرج الناس، فبادروا إىل بين قريظة.

So Aliasws came, and hesaww said to himasws: ‘Call out among the people: ‘No one should pray Al-Asr Salat except by the Clan of Qureyza’. Amir-Al-Momineenasws went and called out among the people, and took them to the Clan of Qureyza.

أخطب ملا و خرج رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم( بني يديه، مع الراية العظمى، و كان حيي بن اهنزمت قريش، جاء و دخل حصن بين قريظة، فجاء أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم( و أحاط حبصنهم، فأشرف عليهم كعب بن

أسد من احلصن يهتمهم، و يهتم رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(،

And Rasool-Allahsaww went out, and Amir-al-Momineenasws was in front of himsaww, with the great Flag. And when Quraysh were defeated, Hayy Bin Akhtab went and entered the fortress of the Clan of Qureyza. So Amir-al-Momineenasws came and surrounded their fortress. Then Ka’ab Bin Asad came out from the fortress and insulted them, and insulted Rasool-Allahsaww.

يا رسول -بأيب أنت و امي»فأقبل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( على محار، فاستقبله أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم(، فقال: «. يا علي، لعلهم شتموين إهنم لو قد رأوين ألذلم اهلل»فقال رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: «. ال تدن من احلصن -اهلل

So Rasool-Allahsaww came over riding upon a donkey, but Amir-Al-Momineenasws faced himsaww and said: ‘May myasws fatherasws and myasws motherasws be sacrificed for yousaww – O Rasool-Allahsaww – Do not approach the fortress’. So Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘O Aliasws! Is it because they are insulting mesaww? If they were to see mesaww, Allahazwj would Humiliate them!’

و كان حول احلصن خنل كثري، فأشار إليه رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( بيده، فتباعد عنه، و تفرق يف املفازة، و أنزل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( العسكر حول حصنهم، فحاصرهم ثلثة أيام، فلم يطلع منهم أحد رأسه، فلما كان بعد ثلثة أيام نزل

ال: يا حممد، تعطينا ما أعطيت إخواننا من بين النضري احقن دماءنا، و خنلي لك البلد و ما فيها، و ال إليه غزال بن شول، فق «. ال، أو تنزلون على حكمي»نكتمك شيئا. فقال:

And around the fortress there was a huge palm tree. Rasool-Allahsaww gestured towards it by hissaww hand, so it distanced itself from it, and separated to be in the wasteland. And Rasool-Allahsaww encamped the soldiers around the fortress. They besieged them for three days. Not one of them stuck their heads out from it. So after the three days, Gazaal Bin Shamoul came down to them, and he said, ‘O Muhammadsaww! Give us what was given to our brother from the Clan of Nuzeyr. Spare our blood, and we shall leave for yousaww the town and whatever is in it, and we shall not conceal anything’. So hesaww said: ‘No, or you yield to two of mysaww judgements’.

فرجع، و بقوا أياما، فبكت النساء و الصبيان إليهم، و جزعوا جزعا شديدا، فلما اشتد عليهم احلصار نزلوا على حكم رسول اهلل اء، فعزلن.)صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، فأمر رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( بالرجال، فكتفوا، و كانوا سبع مائة ، و أمر بالنس

He returned, and remained for a day. The women and children among them cried, and they grieve with a severe grievance. So, when the siege became difficult upon them, they yielded to the judgement of Rasool-Allahsaww. Then Rasool-Allahsaww ordered for the men to be bound, and there were seven hundreds of them, and ordered for the women to be dismissed.

فاخرج كعب بن أسد، جمموعة يديه إىل عنقه، و كان مجيل و سيما، فلما نظر إليه رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، قال له: س ! احلرب الذكي الذي قدم عليكم من الهام، فقال: تركت المر و النزير ، و جئت إىل يا كعب، أما نفعتك وصية ابن احلوا»

البؤس و التمور، لنيب يبعث، خمرجه مبكة، و مهاجرته يف هذه البحرية، بجتزئ بالكسريات و التمريات، و يركب احلمار العري، يف «. بايل من القى منكم، يبلغ سلطانه منقطع الف و احلافرعينيه محرة، بني كتفيه خامت النبوة، يضع سيفه على عاتقه، ال ي

So Ka’ab Bin Sa’ad came out, with his hands bound to his neck, and he was a handsome man, so when Rasool-Allahsaww looked towards him, hesaww said to him: ‘O Ka’ab, did the will of Ibn Al-Hawaas not benefit you? The intelligent Rabbi who came to you from Syria, said, ‘Avoid the intoxicants, and the pigs. And I have come to the evil and the dates, for a Prophetsaww would be Sent, coming out at Makkah, and would emigrate in this area, and cutting off the disappointment, and would be riding a bareback donkey, with redness in its eyes, in between hissaww shoulders would be the seal of the Prophet-hood, and would place hissaww sword upon hissaww shoulder, and would not care which one of you hesaww meets, hissaww authority would cut-off the slipper and the hoof’.

فقال: قد كان ذلك يا حممد، و لوال أن اليهود يعريوين أين جزعت عند القتل لمنت بك، و صدقتك، و لكين على دين عنقه. فضربت« قدموه فاضربوا عنقه»اليهودية، عليه أحيا، و عليه أموت. فقال رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(:

So he said, ‘Such is the case, O Muhammadsaww! And had the Jews supported me, I would have grieved at the fighting in believing in yousaww, and would have ratified yousaww, but I am upon the religion of the Jews. Upon it I live, and upon it I shall die’. So Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘Go ahead and strike his neck!’ So his neck was struck.

يا -فقال: و اهلل« يا فاسق، كيف رأيت صنع اهلل بك »ث قدم حيي بن أخطب، فقال له رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: فقدم، و ضرب عنقه ت كل اجلهد، و لكن من خيذل اهللما ألوم نفسي يف عداوتك، و لقد قلقلت كل مقلقل، و جهد -حممد

اسقوهم العذب، و »فقتلهم رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( يف الربدين: بالغداة، و العهي، يف ثلثة أيام، و كان يقول: ين ظاهروهم من أهل الكتاب و أن زل الذ حىت قتلهم كلهم، و أنزل اهلل على رسوله فيهم:«. أطعموهم الطيب، و أحسنوا إسارهم

ء قديراا. من صياصيهم أي من حصوهنم و قذف يف ق لوهبم الرعب إىل قوله: و كان الله على كل شي

The Hayy Bin Akhtab came, so Rasool-Allahsaww said to him: ‘O Mischievous one! How did you see what Allahazwj has Done with you?’ He said, ‘By Allahazwj – O Muhammadsaww – I do not blame myself regarding enmity towards yousaww, and would have shaken with every shaking, and would have fought with every fight, but whatever we abandoned, Allahazwj Made it to happen. And Rasool-Allahsaww had his neck to be struck, and hesaww killed them in two cold spells of the mornings and evenings over three days. And hesaww was saying: ‘Give them sweet water, and give them good food, and make good their bondage’, until hesaww had killed all of them

and Allahazwj Revealed upon Hisazwj Rasoolsaww with regards to them: And He Brought down those backers from the people of the Book from their fortress and Cast awe into their hearts [33:26] – up to Hisazwj Words: and Allah would always be Able upon all things [33:27]’.12

VERSES 28 & 29

ن يا وزينت ها ف ت عالني أمت ع كن وأسرحكن يا أي ها النيب قل ألزواجك إن كنت تردن احلياة الد {28سراحاا مجيلا }

O Prophet! Say to your wives: ‘If you were intending the life of the world and its adornments, then come, I shall provide for you and release you with a gracious release [33:28]

ار الخرة فإن الله أعد للمحسنات منكن أجراا عظيماا وإن كنت تردن الله ورسوله والد{29}

And if you were intending Allah and His Rasool, and the House of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has Prepared for the good doers from you, a mighty Recompense [33:29]

السلم ( قال سألته عن رجل خي ر امرأته محيد عن ابن ساعة عن ابن رباط عن عيص بن القاسم عن أيب عبد الله ) عليه فاختارت ن فسها بانت منه

Humeyd, from Ibn Sama’at, from Ibn Rabat, from Ays Bin Al Qasim,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullahasws, said, ‘I asked himasws about a man who (gave a) choice to his wife, so she chose herself to be irrevocably divorced from him’.

ا هذا شي هن و هو ق ول ء كان لرسول الله ) صلى اهلل عليه وآله ( خاصةا أمر بذلك ف فعل و لو اخت رن أن فسهن لطلق قال ال إننيا و زينتها ف تعالني أمت عكن و أسرحكن سراحاا مجيلا . الله عز و جل قل ألزواجك إن كنت تردن احلياة الد

Heasws said: ‘No! This is something which was for Rasool-Allahsaww in particular. Hesaww was Commanded with that, so hesaww did it; and had they chosen themselves, they would have been divorced, and these are the Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic: O Prophet! Say to your wives: ‘If you were intending the life of the

world and its adornments, then come, I shall provide for you and release you with a gracious release [33:28]’.13

وعنه: عن حممد بن حيىي، عن أمحد بن حممد، عن حممد بن إساعيل، عن حممد بن الفضيل، عن أيب الصبا الكناين، قال: ذكر أن زينب قالت لرسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: ال تعدل و أنت رسول اهلل ! و قالت حفصة: »أبو عبد اهلل )عليه السلم(:

ا. إن طلقنا وجدنا يف قومنا أكفاءن

And from him, from Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muhammad Bin Ismail, from Muhammad Bin Al-Fazeyl, from Abu Al-Sabah Al-kanany who said,

‘Abu Abdullahasws mentioned that: ‘Zaynab said to Rasool-Allahsaww, ‘Yousaww are not doing justice and yousaww are Rasool-Allahsaww?’ And Hafsa said, ‘If yousaww were to divorce us, we would find (suitors) in our people who are a match for us’.

و آله(، فأنف اهلل عز و جل لرسوله )صلى اهلل عليه -قال -فاحتبس الوحي عن رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( عهرين يوما -عكن إىل قوله: أجراا عظيماا فأنزل: يا أي ها النيب قل ألزواجك إن كنت تردن احلياة الدنيا و زينتها ف تعالني أمت

The Revelation was Withheld from Rasool-Allahsaww for twenty days, after which Allah azwj Mighty and Majestic Revealed: O Prophet! Say to your wives: ‘If you were intending the life of the world and its adornments [33:28] - up to Hisazwj Words: an honourable sustenance [33:31].

«.ء و رسوله فليس بهيفاخرتن اهلل و رسوله، و لو اخرتن أنفسهن لنب، و إن اخرتن اهلل -قال

Heasws said: ‘So Allahazwj and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww gave them a choice, and if they had chosen themselves they would have become strangers (divorced), and if they had chosen Allahazwj and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww, it would have come to nothing’.14

Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ibn Fazzal, from Ibn Bukeyr, from Zurara who said,

‘I heard Abu Ja’farasws saying that Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Scorned for Rasool-Allahsaww due to the speech which one of hissaww wives said, so Heazwj Revealed the Verse of the Choice (33:28). So Rasool-Allahsaww detached from hissaww wives for twenty-nine nights in the watering place of Umm Ibrahimas (Mariah the Coptic). Then hesaww called them over, and hesaww gave them a choice, so they chose himsaww. Thus nothing happened, and had they chosen themselves, even once, they would have been irrevocably divorced’.

ا أنه ال يأتينا األكفاء من ق ومنا ي ت زوجونا .قال و سألته عن مقالة المرأة ما هي قال ف قال إن ها قالت ي رى حممد أنه لو طلقن

He (the narrator) said, ‘And I asked himasws about the speech of the woman, and what it was?’ So heasws said: ‘She had said, ‘Muhammadsaww sees that if hesaww were to divorce us, the matches from our people would not come to us to marry us’.15

سن بن رباط، عن أيب أيوب الزاز، عن وعنه: عن حممد بن أيب عبد اهلل، عن معاوية بن حكيم، عن صفوان، و علي بن احلء كان لرسول اهلل إنا ذاك شي و ما هو، و ما ذاك »حممد بن مسلم، قال: سألت أبا جعفر )عليه السلم( عن اليار، فقال:

And from him, from Muhammad Bin Abu Abdullah, from Muawiya Bin Hakeem, from Safwan, from Ali Bin Al-Hassan Bin Rabaat, from Abu Ayoub Al-Khazaz, from Muhammad Bin Muslim who said,

‘I asked Abu Ja’farasws about the choice, so heasws said: ‘And what is it, and what is that? But rather, that is a thing which was for Rasool-Allahsaww (only)’.16

وعنه: عن عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن ابن أيب نصر، عن محاد بن عثمان، عن عبد األعلى بن أعني، قال: سعت إن بعض نساء النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( قالت: أ يرى حممد أنه لو طلقنا ال جند األكفاء »أبا عبد اهلل )عليه السلم( يقول:

و جل له من فوق سبع ساواته، فأمره، فخريهن، حىت انتهى إىل زينب بنت جحش، فقامت، فغضب اهلل عز -قال -من قومنا «.و قبلته، و قالت: أختار اهلل و رسوله

And from him, from a number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ibn Abu Nasr, from Hamaad Bin Usmaan, from Abdul A’ala Bin A’ayn who said,

‘I heard Abu Abdullahasws saying: ‘One of the wives of the Prophetsaww said, ‘Do you see that if Muhammadsaww were to divorce us, we would not find anyone suitable from our people? So Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic was Wrathful from the top of the seven skies, and Commanded himsaww that he aww should give them wealth, until hesaww came to Zaynab Bint Jahsh, but she stood up, and kissed himsaww and said, ‘I choose Allahazwj and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww’.17

O wives of the prophet! The one from you who comes with an open immorality, the Punishment would be increased for her doubly, and that would be easy upon Allah [33:30]

كرياا ومن ي قنت منكن لله ورسوله وت عمل صاحلاا ن ؤتا أجرها مرت ني وأعتدنا لا رزقاا{31}

And one who is certain of Allah and His Rasool and does righteous deeds, We shall Give her Recompense to her twice, and Prepare for her an honourable sustenance [33:31]

قال: حدثنا حممد بن أمحد، قال: حدثنا حممد بن عبد اهلل بن غالب، عن عبد الرمحن بن أيب جنران، عن محاد، عن حريز، ثيه السلم( عن قول اهلل عز و جل: يا نساء النيب من يأت منكن بفاحهة مب ي نة يضاعف لا العذاب قال: سألت أبا عبد اهلل )عل

«.الفاحهة: الروج بالسيف»ضعفني، قال:

Then (Ali Bin Ibrahim) said, ‘Muhammad Bin Ahmad narrated to us, from Muhammad Bin Abdullah Bin Ghalib, from Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Najran, from Hamaad, from Hareyz who said,

‘I asked Abu Abdullahasws about the Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic: O wives of the prophet! The one from you who comes with an open immorality, the Punishment would be increased for her doubly [33:30], heasws said: ‘The immorality – the coming out with the sword (for battle)’.18

حممد بن العباس، قال: حدثنا احلسني بن أمحد، عن حممد بن عيسى، عن يونس، عن كرام، عن حممد بن مسلم، عن أيب عبد يعين أهل « قتال أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم(»قلت: ال. قال: « أ تدري ما الفاحهة املبينة »اهلل )عليه السلم(، قال: قال يل:

اجلمل.

Muhammad Bin Al-Abbas, from Al-Husayn Bin Ahmad, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Yunus, from Karaam, from Muhammad Bin Muslim,

(The narrator says) Abu Abdullahasws said to me: ‘Do you know what is the: open immorality [33:30]?’ I said, ‘No’. Heasws said: ‘The fighting against Amir-Al-Momineenasws’. Meaning the people of the Camel (Battle of Al-Basra)’.19

يف كتاب الصال عن على بن أىب طالب عليه السلم عن النيب صلى اهلل عليه واله انه قال يف وصيته له: يا على ليس على النساء مجعة إىل أن قال: وال خترج من بيت زوجها اال باذنه وان خرجت بغري اذنه لعنها اهلل وجربئيل وميكائيل.

In the book Al-Khisaal,

(It has been narrated) from Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws, who from the Prophetsaww having said in hissaww will to himasws: ‘O Aliasws! The congregation, it is not upon the women,’ until hesaww said: ‘And she should not come out from the house of her husband

without his permission. And if she were to come out without his permission, the Curse of Allahazwj, and Jibraeelas, and Mikaeelas would be upon her’.20

أجرها مرتني، و عذاهبا ضعفني، كل هذا يف »قال علي بن إبراهيم: و يف رواية أيب اجلارود، عن أيب جعفر )عليه السلم(، قال: ث «.الخرة، حيث يكون األجر، يكون العذاب

Then Ali Bin Ibrahim said, ‘And in a report of Abu Al-Jaroud,

‘Abu Ja’farasws having said: ‘Her Recompense would be twice, and her Punishment would be doubled. All this is in the Hereafter, where the Recompense would take place, and the Punishment would take place’.21

و للمحسن منا أجرين وأخاف على ] الفضل الطربسي [ روى أبو محزة الثمايل، عن زيد بن علي )عليه السلم( انه قال: إين ألرج .املسئ منا أن يضاعف له العذاب ضعفني كما وعد أزواج النيب )صلى اهلل عليه وآله(

Al Fazal Al Tabarsy – Abu Hamza Al Sumaly reported,

(It has been narrated) from Zayd son of Aliasws (4th Imam), heasws having said: ‘Iasws am hopeful for the doer of good from us with two Recompenses, and Iasws fear over the offender from us that the Punishment would be increased for him to be doubled just as wives of the Prophetsaww had been Promised with’? .22

يم بن عبد احلميد، عن علي بن عبيد اهلل بن احلسني، عن أبيه، عن علي بن احلسني الطربسي: روى حممد بن أيب عمري، عن إبراه زين العابدين )عليه السلم(، أنه قال له رجل: إنكم أهل بيت مغفور لكم.

Al-Tabarsy – It has been reported by Muhammad Bin Abu Umeyr, from Ibrahim Bin Abdul Hameed, from Ali Bin Ubeydullah Bin Al-Husayn, from his father,

‘From Aliasws Bin Al-Husaynasws Zayn Al-Abideenasws, a man having said to himasws, ‘Youasws, the Peopleasws of the Household, there is Forgiveness for youasws all’.

يف أزواج النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( من أن يكون كما تقول، إنا نن أحرى أن بجري فينا ما أجرى اهلل»فغضب، و قال: قال: ث قرأ اليتني.«. نرى حملسننا ضعفني من األجر، و ملسيئنا ضعفني من العذاب

He (the narrator) said, ‘Heasws got angry and said: ‘It is more exact that Allahazwj has Made to flow within usasws what Heazwj Made to be in the wives of the Prophetsaww, from that it should happen as you are saying. Weasws see that ourasws benevolent ones would get double the Recompense, and for ourasws wrong-doers would get double the Punishment’.23

VERSES 32 & 33

إن ات قيت فل ختضعن بالقول ف يطمع الذي يف ساء النيب لست كأحد من النساء يا ن {32ق لبه مرض وق لن ق والا معروفاا }

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any one from the women. If you are pious, then do not be soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearns; and speak a reasonable speech [33:32]

وأقمن الصلة وآتني الزكاة وأطعن الله وق رن يف ب يوتكن وال ت ب رجن ت ب رج اجلاهلية األوىل ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت ويطهركم تطهرياا } ورسوله {33إن

And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the Pre-Islamic period before; and establish the Salat and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Rasool. But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]

Prophecy of Rasool-Allahsaww

رمحه اهلل(، قال: حدثنا محزة بن القاسم، قال: حدثنا أبو احلسن علي بن اجلنيد ابن بابويه، قال: حدثنا علي بن أمحد الدقاق )الرازي، قال: حدثنا أبو عوانة، قال: حدثنا احلسن بن علي، عن عبد الرزاق، عن أبيه، عن مينا موىل عبد الرمحن بن عوف، عن

«. يغسل كل نيب وصيه»، من يغسلك إذا مت قال: عبد اهلل بن مسعود، قال: قلت للنيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: يا رسول اهلل «.علي بن أيب طالب»قلت: فمن وصيك، يا رسول اهلل قال:

Ibn Babuwayh said, ‘It was narrated to us by Ali Bin Ahmad al Daqaq, from Hamza Bin Al Qasim, from Abu Al Hassan Ali Bin Al Juneyd Al Razy, from Abu Awana, from Al Hassan Bin Ali, from Abdul Razaq, from his father, from Mana, a slave of Abdul Rahman Bin Awf, from Abdullah Bin Masoud who said,

‘I said to the Prophetsaww, ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww! Who will be washing yousaww, when yousaww pass away?’ Hesaww said:’ Every Prophetas is washed by hisas successoras’. I said, ‘So who is yoursaww successorasws, O Rasool-Allahsaww? Hesaww said: ‘Ali Bin Abu Talibasws’.

ثلثني سنة، فإن يوشع بن نون وصي موسى عاش بعد موسى ثلثني سنة، و »قلت: كم يعيش بعدك يا رسول اهلل قال: خرجت عليه صفراء بنت شعيب زوجة موسى )عليه السلم(، فقالت: أنا أحق منك باألمر. فقاتلها، فقتل مقاتليها، و أسرها

فأحسن أسرها،

I said, How long would heasws live after yousaww, O Rasool-Allahsaww?’ Hesaww said: ‘Thirty years, for Yoshua Bin Noonas, successoras of Musaas lived for thirty years after Musaas, and Safra’a daughter of Shueybas, wife of Musaas came out against himas, and she said, ‘I am more rightful that you are with the command’. So heas fought against her and killed her soldiers, and made her a captive, and was good to her in her captivity.

و إن ابنة أيب بكر ستخرج على علي يف كذا و كذا ألفا من أميت، فيقاتلها، فيقتل مقاتليها، و يأسرها فيحسن أسرها، و فيها أنزل «. اهلل عز و جل: و ق رن يف ب يوتكن و ال ت ب رجن ت ب رج اجلاهلية األوىل يعين صفراء بنت شعيب

And the daughter of Abu Bakr would be coming out against Aliasws among such and such thousands from mysaww community. So heasws would fight her, and kill her soldiers, and make her a captive, and be good in her captivity. And regarding her, Allahazwj Revealed: And stay in your houses and do not display your finery like the displaying of the Pre-Islamic period before [33:33] – meaning Safra’a daughter of Shueybas’’.24

The enmity of Ayesha towards Ali Bin Abu Talibasws

حدثنا امحد بن حممد واحلسن بن على بن النعمان عن ابيه على بن النعمان عن حممد بن سنان يرفعه قال ان عايهة قالت التمسوا ىل رجل شديد العداوة لذا الرجل حىت ابعثه إليه قال فأتيت به فمثل بني يديها فرفعت إليه رأسها فقالت ما بلغ من

ريا ما امتىن على رىب انه واصحابه يف وسطى فضربت ضربة بالسيف يصبغ فسبق السيف الدمعداوتك لذا الرجل قال فقال لا كث

It has been narrated to us Ahmad Bin Muhammad, and Al-Hassan Bin Ali Bin Al-No’man, from his father Ali Bin Al-No’man, from Muhammad Bin Sinan with an unbroken chain said:

‘Ayesha said, ‘Seek out a man for me who will have extreme enmity towards this man (Aliasws)’. He said, ‘I came to her with him, as if in front of her. She raised her head and said, ‘What is the level of your enmity for this manasws?’ He said to her, ‘A lot. Many a times I have wished to my Lordazwj, that heasws and hisasws companions would be in my midst. I would then strike them with the striking of the sword, and would dye it with the blood’.

قالت فانت له فاذهب بكتايب هذا فادفعه إليه ظاعنا رأيته أو مقيما اما انك ان رايته راكبا على بغلة رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وآله متنكبا قوسه معلقا كنانته بقربوس سرجه واصحابه خلفه كأهنم طري صواف فتعطيه كتايب هذا وان عرض عليك طعامه وشرابه

يه السحرفلتناولن منه شيئا فان ف

She said to him, ‘Go with this letter of mine and hand it over to himasws. Our guess is that you will see himasws to be standing, but if you see himasws to be riding on the mule of Rasool-Allahsaww, hisasws bow hanging from hisasws saddle, and hisasws companions following behind himasws as if they are rows of birds. Give him this letter

of mine and heasws will present to you hisasws food and hisasws drink. Do not eat or drink from it anything, for there is sorcery in it!’

ه الكتاب ففض خامته ث قرأه فقال تبلغ إىل منزلنا فتصيب من طعامنا وشرابنا ونكتب جواب كتابك قال فاستقبلته راكبا فناولت فقال هذا واهلل ماال يكون

He said, ‘I met himasws as a rider. I handed over to himasws the letter. Heasws opened its seal and read it. Heasws said: ‘Let us reach our destination, eat our food and quench your thirst and weasws will write the answer to your letter’. He said, ‘This, by Allahazwj is what will not happen’.

قال فسار خلفه فاحدق به اصحابه ث قال له اسألك قال نعم قال وجتيبىن قال نعم

He said, ‘I continued walking behind himasws along with hisasws companions, then heasws said to me, ‘Iasws would like to ask you’. I said: ‘Yes’. Heasws said, ‘And you will answer measws’, He said: ‘Yes’.

لت لك ما بلغ من عداوتك لذا الرجل قال فنهدتك اهلل هل قالت التمسوا ىل رجل شديدا عداوته لذا الرجل فاتوها بك فقا فقلت كثريا ما امتىن على رىب انه واصحابه يف وسطى واىن ضربت ضربة بالسيف يسبق السيف الدم قال اللهم نعم

Heasws said, ‘By Allahazwj, she sought you. Did she say to you, ‘Seek out a man for me who has extreme enmity for this manasws’. You were brought to her. She said to you, ‘What is the level of your enmity for this manasws?’ You said, ‘A lot. Many a times I have wished to my Lordazwj that heasws and hisasws companions would be in my midst and I would strike them by the sword until I dye it with the blood?’ He said, ‘O Lord Allahazwj, yes!’

قال فنهدتك اهلل اقالت لك اذهب بكتايب هذا فادفعه إليه ظاعنا كان أو مقيما اما انك ان رأيته راكبا بغلة رسول اهلل متنكبا قوسه معلقا كنانته بقربوس سرجه واصحابه خلفه كأهنم طري صواف فتعطيه كتابه هذا فقال اللهم نعم

Heasws said: ‘By Allahazwj, she sought you, and said to you, ‘Go with this letter of mine and hand it over to himasws. Our guess is that you will see himasws to be standing, but if you see himasws to be riding on the mule of the Messenger of Allahsaww, hisasws bow hanging from hisasws saddle, and hisasws companions following behind himasws as if they are rows of birds, give him this letter of mine’. He said, ‘O Allahazwj, yes!’

قال فنهدتك باهلل هل قالت لك ان عرض عليك طعامه وشرابه فلتناولن منه شيئا فان فيه السحر قال اللهم نعم

Heasws said: ‘By Allahazwj she sought you and did she say to you, ‘And heasws will present to you hisasws food and hisasws drink. Do not eat or drink from it anything, for there is black magic in it?’ He said, ‘O Allahazwj, yes!’

قال فمبلغ انت عىن قال اللهم نعم فاىن اتيتك وما يف االرض خلق ابغض إىل منك وانا الساعة ماف االرض خلق احب إىل منك فمر ىب مبا شئت

Heasws said: ‘You will say what Iasws tell you?’ He said, ‘By Allahazwj, yes, for I came to youasws, and there was no creature on the earth more hateful to me than youasws, and at this time, there is not creature more beloved to me than youasws. So order me with whatever that you so desire’.

تايب هذا وقل لا ما اطعت اهلل والرسوله حيث امرك اهلل بلزوم بيتك فخرجت ترددين يف العساكر وقل لم ما قال ارجع إليها ك انصفتم اهلل والرسوله حيث خلفتم حليلكم يف بيوتكم واخرجتم حليلة رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وآله

Heasws said: ‘Return to her this letter and say to her: ‘There is no obedience to Allahazwj and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww unless you stay where Allahazwj has Necessitated (you to be) in your house’. ‘She came out twice among the soldiers’. And say to them: ‘What justice have you done to Allahazwj and Hisazwj Rasoolsaww, where you left behind your own wives in your houses, and brought out the wife of Rasool-Allahsaww’.

قال فجاء بكتابه حىت طرحه إليها وابلغها مقالته ث رجع إليه فاصيب بصفني فقالت ما نبعث إليه باحد اال افسده علينا.

He said, ‘I went with hisasws letter until I put it to her, and told her of the discourse, then returned to himasws. I was injured in Siffeen. She said, ‘I do not send anyone to himasws except that heasws will cause mischief to us’.25

علي بن إبراهيم، قال: حدثنا محيد بن زياد، عن حممد بن احلسني، عن حممد بن حيىي، عن طلحة بن زيد، عن أيب عبد اهلل )عليه «.أي ستكون جاهلية اخرى»ت ب رجن ت ب رج اجلاهلية األوىل، قال: السلم(، عن أبيه )عليه السلم(، يف هذه الية: و ال

Ali Bin Ibrahim said, ‘Hameed Bin Ziyad narrated to us, from Muhammad Bin Al-Husayn, from Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Talhat Bin Zayd,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullahasws, from hisasws fatherasws having said regarding this Verse: and do not display your finery like the displaying of the Pre-Islamic period before [33:33], heasws said: ‘You will become (like the) ignorant once again’.26

The Uncleanness (Al-Rijs)

‘Abu Ja’farasws has said: ‘The uncleanness (الرجس) – It is the doubt, and weasws do not doubt in ourasws Religion, ever’.27

وعنه، قال: حدثنا عبد العزيز بن حيىي، عن حممد بن زكريا، عن جعفر بن حممد بن عمارة، قال: حدثين أيب، عن جعفر بن قال علي بن أيب طالب )عليه السلم(: إن اهلل عز و جل فضلنا أهل البيت، و كيف ال »قال: حممد، عن أبيه )عليهما السلم(،

ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهرك «م تطهرياا يكون كذلك، و اهلل عز و جل يقول يف كتابه: إن

And from him (Sharaf Al Deen Al Najafi) who said, ‘It was narrated to us by Abdul Aziz Bin Yahya, from Muhammad Bin Zakariyya, from Ja’far Bin Muhammad Bin Amarat, from his father,

‘From Ja’far Bin Muhammadasws, from hisasws fatherasws having said: ‘Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws said: ‘Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Merited usasws, the Peopleasws of the Household, and how can it not happen to be like that, and Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic is Saying in Hisazwj Book: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]?

«.فقد طهرنا اهلل من الفواحش، ما ظهر منها و ما بطن، فنحن على منهاج احلق

Thus, Allahazwj Purified usasws from the immoralities, whatever is apparent from these and whatever is hidden, and weasws are upon the manifesto of the Truth’’.28

سليم، قال: سعت سلمان يقول: قلت: يا رسول اهلل، إن اهلل مل يبعث نبيا قبلك إال وله وصي، فمن وصيك يا نيب اهلل

Sulaym (Bin Qays) said, ‘I heard Salmanra saying, ‘Ira said, ‘O Rasool Allahsaww, surely Allahazwj did not Send a Prophetas before except that heas had a successoras for himas, so who is yoursaww successoras, O Prophetsaww of Allahazwj?’

قال: يا سلمان، إنه ما أتاين من اهلل فيه شيئ. فمكث غري كثري، ث قال يل: يا سلمان، إنه قد أتاين من اهلل يف األمر الذي . إين أشهدك يا سلمان إن علي بن أيب طالب وصيي وأخي ووارثي ووزيري وخليفيت يف أهلي وويل كل مؤمن من سألتين عنه

بعدي، يربئ ذميت ويقضي ديين ويقاتل على سنيت.

Hesaww said: ‘O Salmanra, it is ‘that’ for which Allahazwj has Commanded me (to Announce). So hesaww paused but not for long, then said to mesaww; ‘O Salmanra, it has Come to mesaww from Allahazwj regarding the matter which youra asked mesaww about. Isaww hereby (hold) youra as a witness that Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws is mysaww successorasws, and mysaww brother, and mysaww inheritor, and mysaww Vizier, and mysaww Caliph in mysaww Family and the Guardian of every Believer from after mesaww, taking over mysaww responsibilities, and fulfilling mysaww debts, and fighting for (the preservation of) mysaww Sunnah.

يا سلمان، إن اهلل اطلع على األرض اطلعة فاختارين منهم. ث اطلع ثانية فاختار منهم عليا أخي، وأمرين فزوجته سيدة نساء أهل اجلنة. ث اطلع ثالثة فاختار فاطمة واألوصياء: ابين حسنا وحسينا وبقيتهم من ولد احلسني.

O Salmanra, surely Allahazwj Considered the earth with a Consideration, so Heazwj Chose mesaww from among them. Then Heazwj Considered for a second time, so Heazwj Chose from them Aliasws mysaww brotherasws, and Ordered mesaww to get himasws to be married to the Chieftess of the women of the Paradise. Then Heazwj Considered for a third time, so Heazwj Chose Fatimaasws and the successorsasws, mysaww two sonsasws Hassanasws and Husaynasws and the rest of themasws from the sonsasws Al-Husaynasws.

حىت يردوا علي احلوض واحدا بعد -ومجع بني إصبعيه املسبحتني -هم مع القرآن والقرآن معهم، ال يفارقهم وال يفارقونه كهاتني واحد، شهداء اهلل على خلقه وحجته يف أرضه. من أطاعهم أطاع اهلل ومن عصاهم عصى اهلل، كلهم هاد مهدي.

Theyasws are with the Quran and the Quran is with themasws. Neither will theyasws separate from it nor will it separate from themasws just like these’ – and hesaww gathered two fingers of hissaww two hands – ‘until they return to the Fountain, oneasws after the otherasws, Witnesses of Allahazwj over Hisazwj creatures, and Hisazwj Proofs in Hisazwj earth. The one who obeys themasws has obeyed Allahazwj, and the one who disobeys themasws has disobeyed Allahazwj, all of themasws being Guides and guided onesasws.

ونزلت هذه الية يف ويف أخي علي ويف ابنيت فاطمة ويف ابين واألوصياء واحدا بعد واحد، ولدي وولد أخي: )إنا يريد اهلل ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل البيت ويطهركم تطهريا(.

And this Verse was Revealed regarding myselfsaww, and mysaww brother Aliasws, and mysaww daughter Fatimaasws, and regarding mysaww two sonsasws, and the successorsasws oneasws after the otherasws, being mysaww sonsasws and the sonsasws of mysaww brotherasws: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33].

أتدرون ما )الرجس( يا سلمان قلت: ال. قال: الهك، ال يهكون يف شيئ جاء من عند اهلل أبدا، مطهرون يف والدتنا وطينتنا إىل آدم، مطهرون معصومون من كل سوء.

Do youra know what is ‘the uncleanliness (Al-Rijs)’, O Salmanra?’ Ira said, ‘No’. Hesaww said: ‘The ‘doubt’. Theyasws will never be ‘doubting’ with regards to anything which Comes from Allahazwj, ever. Weasws have been Purified with regards to ourasws births and ourasws Clay (Teenat) up to Adamas, being Pure and Infallible from every evil’.29

The Verse of the Purification was regarding the Holy Masumeenasws

أىب رمحه اهلل قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد اهلل عن احلسن بن موسى الهاب عن علي بن حسان الواسطي، عن عمه عبد الرمحان بن كثري قال: قلت اليب عبد اهلل " ع " ماعىن اهلل عز وجل بقوله )إنا يريد اهلل ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل البيت ويطهركم

تطهريا(

My father said, ‘Sa’ad Bin Abdullah Bin Al Hassan Bin Musa Al Khashab, from Ali Bin Hisan Al Wasity, from his uncle Abdul Rahman Bin Kaseer who said,

‘I said to Abu Abdullahasws, ‘What does Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Mean by Hisazwj Words: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]?’

ا يريد الله عن أيب إسحاق عن احلرث عن علي ع قال: كان رسول الله ص يأتينا كل غداة ف ي قول الصل ة رمحكم الله الصلة إن .ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهركم تطهرياا

From Abu Is’haq, from Al Hars,

‘From Aliasws having said: ‘It was so that Rasool-Allahsaww used to come to usasws every morning, and hesaww was saying: ‘The Salat! May Allahazwj have Mercy on youasws all! The Salat! But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]’.30

قال: نزلت يف النيب وأمري املؤمنني واحلسن واحلسني وفاطمة عليهم السلم وكان علي بن احلسني عليهما السلم إماما ث جرت يف االئمة من ولده االوصياء عليهم السلم فطاعتهم طاعة اهلل ومعصيتهم معصية اهلل عز وجل.

Heasws said: ‘It was Revealed regarding the Prophetsaww, and Amir Al-Momineenasws, and Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Husaynasws, and Fatimaasws. And Aliasws Bin Al-Husaynasws was an Imamasws, then it flowed in the Imamsasws from hisasws sonsasws, the successors. Thus, obedience to themasws is obedience to Allahazwj, and disobedience to themasws is disobedience to Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic’.31

قال: حدثنا علي بن احلسني بن حممد، قال: حدثنا هارون بن موسى التلعكربي، قال: حدثنا عيسى بن موسى الاشي بسر من دخلت على رسول اهلل »رأى، قال: حدثين أيب، عن أبيه، عن آبائه، عن احلسني بن علي، عن علي )عليهم السلم(، قال:

ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهركم )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( يف بيت ام سلمة، و ق د نزلت عليه هذه الية: إن تطهرياا فقال رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: يا علي، هذه الية نزلت فيك، و يف سبطي، و األئمة من ولدك.

‘From Al-Husaynasws Bin Aliasws, from Aliasws having said: ‘Iasws came to Rasool-Allahsaww in the house of Umm Salmaas, and this Verse had been Revealed unto himsaww: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. So Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘O Aliasws! This Verse has been Revealed regarding youasws, and regarding mysaww two grandsonsasws, and the Imamsasws from yourasws sonsasws’.

Iasws said: ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww! And how many Imamsasws are there from after yousaww?’ Hesaww said: ‘Youasws – O Aliasws – then yourasws sonsasws Al-Hassanasws and Al-Husaynasws, and after Al-Husaynasws hisasws sonasws Aliasws, and after Aliasws, hisasws sonasws Muhammadasws, and after Muhammadasws, hisasws sonasws Ja’farasws, and after Ja’farasws, hisasws sonasws Musaasws, and after Musaasws, hisasws sonasws Aliasws, and after Aliasws, hisasws sonasws Muhammadasws, and after Muhammadasws, hisasws sonasws Aliasws, and after Aliasws, hisasws sonasws Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Hujjatasws from the sonasws of Al-Husaynasws.

هكذا وجدت أساءهم مكتوبة على ساق العرش، فسألت اهلل تعاىل عن ذلك، فقال: يا حممد، هم األئمة بعدك، مطهرون «.معصومون، و أعداؤهم ملعونون

This is how Isaww found theirasws names Inscribed upon the Base of the Throne. So Isaww asked Allahazwj the Exalted about that, and Heazwj Said: ‘‘O Muhammadsaww! Theyasws are the Imamsasws after yousaww, Purified, Infallible, and theirasws enemies are the Accursed’.32

Why the Imamsasws were not Named explicitly

ن سهل بن زياد أيب سعيد، عن حممد بن و عنه: عن علي بن إبراهيم، عن حممد بن عيسى، عن يونس و علي بن حممد، ععيسى، عن يونس، عن ابن مسكان، عن أيب بصري، قال: سألت أبا عبد اهلل )عليه السلم( عن قول اهلل عز و جل: أطيعوا الله

«.)عليهم السلم( نزلت يف علي بن أيب طالب، و احلسن، و احلسني»فقال: و أطيعوا الرسول و أويل األمر منكم.

And from him (Al Kulayni), from Ali Bin Ibrahim, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Yunus, and Ali Bin Muhammad, from Sahl Bin Ziyad Abu Saeed, from Yunus, from Ibn Muskan, from Abu Baseer who said,

‘I asked Abu Abdullahasws about the Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Rasool and those with (Divine) Authority from you [4:59]. So heasws said: ‘It was Revealed regarding Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws, and Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Husaynasws’.

So I said to himasws, ‘The people are saying, ‘So why did Allahazwj not Name Aliasws and hisasws Family in the Book of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic?’

اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( نزلت عليه الصلة و مل يسم اهلل لم ثلثا و ال أربعا، حىت كان رسول اهلل فقولوا لم: إن رسول »قال: )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( هو الذي فسر ذلك لم، و نزلت عليه الزكاة و مل يسم لم من كل أربعني درمها درمها، حىت كان رسول

م، و نزل احل فلم يقل لم: طوفوا أسبوعا، حىت كان رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( هو الذي فسر ذلك ل عليه و آله( هو الذي فسر ذلك لم.

Heasws said: ‘So say to them, ‘The Salat was Revealed unto Rasool-Allahsaww, and Allahazwj did not Specify for them, whether it was three or four, until it was Rasool-Allahsaww who interpreted that for them. And the Zakat was Revealed unto himsaww, but it was not specified for them that it was one Dirham out of forty Dirhams, until it was Rasool-Allahsaww who interpreted that for them. And the Hajj was Revealed and it was not Said to them: “Perform Tawaaf seven times”, until it was Rasool-Allahsaww who interpreted that for them.

)صلى اهلل عليه و و نزلت أطيعوا الله و أطيعوا الرسول و أويل األمر منكم و نزلت يف علي و احلسن و احلسني، فقال رسول اهلل و أهل بييت، فإين آله( يف علي )عليه السلم(: أال من كنت مواله فعلي مواله. و قال )عليه السلم(: أوصيكم بكتاب اهلل

ألت اهلل عز و جل أن ال يفرق بينهما حىت يوردمها علي احلوض، فأعطاين ذلك. س

And it was Revealed Obey Allah and obey the Rasool and those with (Divine) Authority from you [4:59]. It was Revealed regarding Aliasws, and Al Hassanasws and Al Husaynasws. So, Rasool-Allahsaww said regarding Aliasws: ‘Indeed! Whosoever Isaww was the Master of, so Aliasws is his Master’. And hesaww said: ‘Isaww bequeath to you with the Book of Allahazwj and the Peopleasws of mysaww Household. Isaww asked Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic that there should be no separation between these two until they both return to mesaww at the Fountain, so Heazwj Gave mesaww that’.

و قال ال تعلموهم فإهنم أعلم منكم.

And hesaww said: ‘Do not (try to) teach themasws for theyasws are more knowledgeable than you’.

و قال: إهنم لن خيرجوكم من باب هدى، و لن يدخلوكم يف باب ضللة، فلو سكت رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( فلم يبني عاها آل فلن و آل فلن، من أهل بيته الد

And hesaww said: ‘Theyasws would never exit you from the door of Guidance and would never enter you into the door of straying’. Had Rasool-Allahsaww remained silent, it would not have been clarified to them who the Peopleasws of hissaww Household were, for them to allege it for the progeny of so and so, and the progeny of so and so.

But, Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Revealed in Hisazwj Book, in Verification of Hisazwj Prophetsaww, But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33].

ان علي و احلسن و احلسني و فاطمة )عليهم السلم(، فأدخلهم رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( حتت الكساء يف بيت أم فكسلمة، و قال: اللهم إن لكل نيب أهل و ثقل، و هؤالء أهلي و ثقلي، فقالت ام سلمة: أ لست من أهلك فقال لا: إنك إىل

خري، و لكن هؤالء أهلي و ثقلي.

So Aliasws, and Al Hassanasws, and Al Husaynasws, and Fatimaasws were in the house of Umm Salmaas, and Rasool-Allahsaww included themasws underneath the Cloak, and said: ‘Our Allahazwj! For every Prophetas there is a family and a weighty thing, and theseasws are mysaww family and weighty thing’. So Umm Salmaas said: ‘Am Ias not from yoursaww family?’ So hesaww said to heras: ‘Youas are upon good, but theyasws are mysaww family and mysaww weighty thing’.

فلما قبض رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( كان علي أوىل الناس بالناس لكثرة ما بلغ فيه رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و إقامته للناس و أخذه بيده، فلما مضى علي )عليه السلم( مل يستطع علي، و مل يكن ليفعل، أن يدخل حممد بن علي و العباس

، بن علي و ال واحدا من ولده

So when Rasool-Allahsaww passed away, Aliasws was foremost to the people than the people themselves, due to the frequency of what Rasool-Allahsaww had delivered with regards to himasws, and established himasws for the people and grabbed himasws by the hand (At Ghadeer Khumm). So when Aliasws passed away, heasws did not have the leeway, nor did heasws do that, that heasws should include Muhammad Bin Ali and Al Abbas Bin Alias, or any one from hisasws sons (into the Imamate).

هلل تبارك و تعاىل أنزل فينا كما أنزل فيك، و أمر بطاعتنا كما أمر بطاعتك، و بلغ فينا رسول إذن لقال احلسن و احلسني: إن ا اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( كما بلغ فيك، و أذهب عنا الرجس كما أذهب عنك.

Thus, Al Hassanasws and Al Husaynasws said: ‘Surely Allahazwj Blessed and High Revealed regarding usasws just as Heazwj Revealed regarding youasws, and Commanded the obedience to usasws just as Heazwj Commanded the obedience to youasws. And Rasool-Allahsaww delivered regarding usasws just as hesaww delivered regarding youasws. And Heazwj Kept the uncleanness from usasws just as Heazwj Kept it away from youasws’.

فلما مضى علي )عليه السلم( كان احلسن )عليه السلم( أوىل هبا لكربه، فلما تويف مل يستطع أن يدخل ولده، و مل يكن ليفعل ذلك، و اهلل عز و جل يقول: و أولوا األرحام ب عضهم أوىل بب عض يف كتاب الله فيحلها يف ولده،

So when Aliasws passed away, Al Hassanasws was the foremost for it due to hisasws age. So when heasws passed away, heasws did not have the leeway to include hisasws

sons, nor did heasws do that, and Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic is Saying: and the possessors of the womb relationships, some of them are higher than the others in the Book of Allah [33:6]. Thus it was Permissible regarding hisasws sons.

إذن لقال احلسني )عليه السلم(: أمر اهلل تبارك و تعاىل بطاعيت كما أمر بطاعتك و طاعة أبيك، و بلغ يف رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( كما بلغ فيك و يف أبيك، و أذهب عين الرجس كما أذهب عنك و عن أبيك.

So Al Husaynasws said: ‘Allahazwj has Commanded for the obedience to measws just as Heazwj had Commanded for the obedience to yourasws fatherasws. And Rasool-Allahsaww has delivered regarding measws just as hesaww had delivered regarding youasws and regarding yourasws father. And Heazwj Kept the uncleanness away from measws just as Heazwj has Kept it away from youasws and yourasws fatherasws’.

فلما صارت إىل احلسني مل يكن أحد من أهل بيته يستطيع أن يدعي عليه كما كان هو يدعي على أخيه و على أبيه لو أرادا أن يصرفا األمر عنه، و مل يكونا ليفعل، ث صارت حني أفضت إىل احلسني )عليه السلم( فجرى تأويل هذه الية: و أولوا األرحام

عض يف كتاب الله ث صارت من بعد احلسني لعلي بن احلسني، ث صارت من بعد علي بن احلسني إىل حممد بن ب عضهم أوىل بب «.علي

So when it went to Al Husaynasws, no one from hisasws family had the leeway to make a claim for it just as heasws had made the claim to hisasws brotherasws and to hisasws fatherasws, to take the matter, nor did anyone do that. So when it went to Al Husaynasws, the explanation of this Verse flowed: and the possessors of the womb relationships, some of them are higher than the others in the Book of Allah [33:6]. Them from after Al Husaynasws it came to Ali Bin Al Husaynasws. Then it went from Ali Bin Al Husaynasws to Muhammad Bin Aliasws’.

«.الرجس: هو الهك، و اهلل ال نهك يف ربنا أبدا»و قال:

And heasws said: ‘The uncleanness (Al Rijs) – it is the doubt. By Allahazwj! Weasws do not doubt regarding ourasws Lordazwj, ever!’33

Entering into the Household

A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Ibn Fazzal, from Al Mufazzal Bin Salih, from Muhammad Bin Ali Al Halby,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullahasws regarding the Words of the Mighty and Majestic: My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and one who entered into my house being a Momin [71:28] – Meaning the Wilayah. The one who enters into the Wilayah enters into the Household of the Prophetsas’.

ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهركم تطهرياا ي عين األئ مة ) عليهم السلم ( و والي ت هم من دخل فيها و ق وله إن دخل يف ب يت النيب ) صلى اهلل عليه وآله ( .

And Hisazwj Words: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33] – Meaning the Imamsasws and theirasws Wilayah. The one who enters into it, enters into the Household of the Prophetsaww’.34

حديث الكساء وآية التطهير

Hadeeth of the cloak (blanket) and the Verse of the Purification

قال سليم: ث قال علي عليه السلم: أيها الناس، أتعلمون أن اهلل أنزل يف كتابه: )إنا يريد اهلل ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل البيت سينا، ث ألقى علينا كساء وقال: )هؤالء أهل بييت وحلميت، يؤملهم ما يؤملين ويطهركم تطهريا(. فجمعين وفاطمة وابين حسنا وح

ويؤذيين ما يؤذيهم وحيرجين ما حيرجهم، فأذهب عنهم الرجس وطهرهم تطهريا(.

Sulaym (Bin Qays) said, ‘Then Aliasws said: ‘O you people, do you know that Allahazwj Revealed in Hisazwj book: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. Hesaww gathered measws, and Fatimaasws and myasws sons Hassanasws and Husaynasws, then covered usasws with a garment and said: ‘These are the Peopleasws of mysaww Household and mysaww flesh, whatever displeases themasws displeases mesaww, and whatever hurts them hurts mesaww, and whatever troubles themasws troubles mesaww, the uncleanness has never reached themasws and theyasws have been Purified by a thorough Purification’.

فقالت أم سلمة: وأنا يا رسول اهلل فقال: )أنت إىل خري، إنا نزلت يف ويف أخي ويف ابنيت فاطمة ويف ابين ويف تسعة من ولد ابين احلسني خاصة ليس معنا فيها أحد غريهم(

Umm Salmaas said, ‘And (what about) meas, O Rasool-Allahsaww?’ Hesaww said: ‘Youas are on good, but this has been Revealed in particulate regarding myselfsaww, and regarding mysaww brotherasws, and regarding mysaww daughter Fatimaasws, and regarding mysaww two sonsasws, and regarding nine from the sonsasws of mysaww son Al-Husaynasws. There is no one along with usasws in this apart from themasws?’

فقالوا كلهم: نههد أن أم سلمة حدثتنا بذلك، فسألنا رسول اهلل صلى اهلل عليه وآله فحدثنا كما حدثتنا به أم سلمة.

They all said, ‘We testify that Umm Salmaas narrated that to us. We asked Rasool-Allahsaww, so hesaww narrated to us just as Umm Salmaas had narrated to us’.35

و عنه، قال: حدثنا أمحد بن احلسن القطان، و حممد بن أمحد السناين، و علي بن أمحد بن موسى الدقاق، و احلسني بن إبراهيم حدثنا أبو العباس أمحد بن حيىي بن زكريا القطان، بن أمحد بن ههام املكتب، و علي بن عبد اهلل الوراق )رضي اهلل عنهم(، قالوا:

«.شركته فيها و فضلته، و يل سبعون منقبة مل يهركين فيها أحد منهمعليه و آله( أنه ليس فيهم رجل له منقبة إال و قد

And from him, from Ahmad Bin Al-Hassan Al-Qatan, and Muhammad Bin Ahmad Al-Sanany, and Ali Bin Ahmad Bin Musa Al-Daqaq, and Al-Husayn Bin Ibrahim Bin Ahmad Bin Hisham Al-Maktab, and Ali Bin Abdullah Al-Waraq, from Abu Al-Abbas Ahmad Bin Yahya Bin Zakariyya Al-Qatan, from Bakr Bin Abdullah Bin Habeen, from Tameem Bin Bahlool, from Suleyman Bin Hakeem, from Sawr Biin Yazeed, from Mak’houwl who said,

‘Amir-ul-Momineen Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws said: ‘The memorisers from the companions of the Prophetsaww knew that there was no man from among them for whom was a virtue except that there was a sharer in it and its preference. And for measws there are seventy virtues which none from among them has a share in it’.

و أما السبعون: فإن »قلت: يا أمري املؤمنني، فأخربين هبن. فذكر أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم( املناقب، إىل أن قال )عليه السلم(: رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( نام، و نومين، و زوجيت فاطمة، و ابين احلسن و احلسني، و ألقى علينا عباءة قطوانية، فأنزل اهلل

ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهركم تطهرياا و قال جربئيل )عليه السلم(: أنا منكم، يا تبارك و تعاىل فينا: إن «.حممد فكان سادسنا جربئيل )عليه السلم(

I said, ‘O Amir-Al-Momineenasws, inform me of these’. So Amir-Al-Momineenasws mentioned the virtues, until heasws said: ‘And as for the seventieth – so, Rasool-Allahsaww lied down, and made measws to lie down, and myasws wife Fatimaasws, and myasws sonsasws Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Husaynasws, and covered upon usasws the Qatwaniyya Cloak, so Allahazwj Blessed and Exalted Revealed regarding usasws : But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. And Jibraeelas said: ‘Ias am from youasws, O Muhammadsaww’. So the sixth among usasws, was Jibraeelas’.36

‘From his grandfatherasws having said: ‘Rasool-Allahsaww in the House of Umm Salmaas, so sheas brought a stew. So hesaww called Aliasws, and Fatimaasws, and Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Husaynasws, so theyasws ate from it. Then hesaww covered themasws with a Kahybariyya Cloak, then said: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. So Umm Salmaas said, ‘And Ias am from themasws, O Rasool-Allahsaww?’ He saww: ‘Youas are upon good’.37

And from him, from Abu Amr Abdul Waahid Bin Muhammad Bin Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Mahdy, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, meaning Ibn Saeed Bin Uqdat, from Ahmad Bin Yahya, from Abdul Rahman, from his father, from Abu Is’haq,

‘From Abdullah Bin Al-Mugheira a slave of Umm Salmaas, wife of the Prophetsaww, who said that this Verse was Revealed in heras house: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33], saying, ‘Rasool-Allahsaww ordered meas that Ias should send for Aliasws, and Fatimaasws, and Al-Hassanasws, and Al-Husaynasws.

So when theyasws came, hesaww embraced Aliasws with hissaww right hand, and Al-Hassanasws by hissaww left hand, and (placed) Al-Husaynasws upon hissaww stomach, and Fatimaasws near hissaww two feet, then said: ‘Our Allahazwj! These are mysaww Peopleasws, and myasws Familyasws, so Keep away the uncleanness from themasws and Purify them with a Purification’. Hesaww said it three times. Ias said, ‘So (what about) meas, O Rasool-Allahsaww?’ So hesaww said: ‘Youas are upon good, if Allahazwj so Desires it’.38

من أهل الهام، فأظهر سرورا، فغضب واثلة، و قال: و اهلل ال أزال أحب عليا، و حسنا، و حسينا، و فاطمة أبدا بعد إذ سعت رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و هو يف منزل أم سلمة يقول فيهم ما قال.

And from him, from his father Ahmad Bin HanbAl-(Sunni Imam), from Abdullah Bin Suleyman, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Ibn Umar Al-hanafy, from Umar Bin Yunus, from Suleyman Bin Abu Suleyman Al-Zuhry, from Yahya Bin Abu Kaseer, from Abdul Rahman Bin Abu Umeyr, from Shadaad Bin Abdullah who said,

‘I heard Waasilat Bin Al-Asqa’a, and they had brought the head of Al-Husaynasws Bin Aliasws, he said, ‘A man from Syria met him and showed delight at it. So Waasilat got angry and said, ‘By Allahazwj! I have never ceased to love Aliasws, and Hassanasws, and Husaynasws, and Fatimaasws ever after having heard Rasool-Allahsaww, while hesaww was in the house of Umm Salmaas, saying regarding them what hesaww said’.

قال واثلة: رأيتين ذات يوم، و قد جئت رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و هو يف منزل ام سلمة، و جاء احلسن )عليه السلم( أجلسه على فخذه اليمىن، و قبله، ث جاء احلسني )عليه السلم( فأجلسه على فخذه اليسرى، و قبله، ث جاءت فاطمة )عليها ف

السلم( فأجلسها بني يديه، ث دعا بعلي )عليه السلم(، فجاء،

Waasilat said, ‘And one day I saw, and Rasool-Allahsaww had come, and hesaww was in the house of Umm Salmaas, and Al-Hassanasws, came, so hesaww seated himasws upon hissaww right thigh and kissed himasws. Then Al-Husaynasws came, so hesaww seated himasws upon hissaww left thigh, and kissed himasws. Then Fatimaasws came up, so hesaww seated herasws in front of himsaww. Then hesaww called for Aliasws, so heasws came over.

ا يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس أهل الب يت و يطهركم تطهرياا، قلت ث أغدف عليهم كساء خيربيا، كأين أنظر إليه، ث قال: إن قال: الهك يف اهلل عز و جل. لواثلة: ما الرجس

Then hesaww covered themasws with a Kahybariyya Cloak. It is as if I am looking at himsaww. Then hesaww said: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. I said to Waasilat, ‘What is the uncleanness?’ He said, ‘The doubt regarding Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic’.39

Ali Bin Ibrahim said, ‘My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abu Umeyyr, from Usman Bin Isa, and Hamaad Bin Usmaan,

From Abu Abdullahasws – in a Hadeeth, said: ‘Amir-al-Momineenasws said to Abu Bakr: ‘O Abu Bakr! Have you read the Book of Allahazwj?’ He said, ‘Yes’. Heasws said: ‘So inform me about the Words of Allahazwj the Exalted: But rather, Allah Intends to Keep the uncleanness away from you, People of the Household, and Purify you (with) a Purification [33:33]. So for what is Revealed, regarding usasws or regarding others?’ He said, ‘But, regarding you’.40

The wives of the Prophetsaww are not included in the Purification

Verse

هبذه الية أزواج النيب أنا أراد وعنه: قال أبو اجلارود: و قال زيد بن علي بن احلسني )عليه السلم(: إن جهاال من الناس يزعمون)صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و قد كذبوا و أمثوا، و امي اهلل لو عىن هبا أزواج النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( لقال: ليذهب عنكن الرجس،

و يطهركن تطهريا. و لكان الكلم مؤنثا.

And from him (Ali Bin Ibrahim) who said, ‘Abu Al-Jaroud said,

‘Zayd, son Aliasws Bin Al-Husaynasws said, ‘The ignorant ones from the people are alleging that it is the wives of the Prophetsaww who are Meant by this Verse. And they are lying, and are sinning. I swear upon Allahazwj, if the wives of the Prophetsaww were Meant by it, Heazwj would have Said: ‘‘And Keep away the uncleanness from you, and Purify you (يطهركن) with a Purification’‘. And the Speech would have been in feminine gender.41

عن عبد اجلبار بنالعباس، عن إبراهيم، وعنه، قال: حدثنا مظفر بن يونس بن مبارك، عن عبد األعلى بن محاد، عن خمول بنعمار الدهين، عن عمرة بنت أفعى، عن ام سلمة، قالت: نزلت هذه الية يف بييت، و يف البيت سبعة: جربئيل، و ميكائيل، و

رسول اهلل، و علي، و فاطمة، و احلسن، و احلسني )صلوات اهلل عليهم أمجعني(.

And from him (Sharaf Al Deen Al Najafi) who said, ‘It was narrated to us by Muzaffar Bin Yunus Bin Mubarak, from Abdul A’ala Bin Hamad, from makhoul Bin Ibrahim, from Abdul Jabbar Bin Al Abbas, from Amar Al Dahni, from Amarat Bint Af’a,

‘From Umm Salmaas having said, ‘This Verse was Revealed in myas house, and in the house were seven – Jibraeelas, and Mikaeelas, and Rasool-Allahsaww, and Aliasws, and Fatimaasws, and Al Hassanasws, and Al Husaynasws’.

و ما قال «. إنك إىل خري، إنك من أزواج النيب»قالت: و كنت على الباب، فقلت: يا رسول اهلل، أ لست من أهل البيت قال: إنك من أهل البيت.

Shera said, ‘And Ira was at the door, and Ira said, ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww! Aren’t Ira from the Peopleasws of the Household?’ Hesaww said: ‘Youra are towards good. Youra are

from the wives of the Prophetsaww’. And hesaww did not say: ‘Youra are from the Peopleasws of the Household’’.42

VERSES 34 - 36

لى يف ب يوتكن من آيات الله واحلكمة {34إن الله كان لطيفاا خبرياا } واذكرن ما ي ت And Remember what is recited in your houses from the Verses of Allah and the Wisdom. Surely, Allah would always be Aware of the subtleties [33:34]

ادقات إن المسلمني والمسلمات والمؤمنني والمؤمنات والقانتني والقانتات والصادقني والص قات والصائمني والصابرين والصابرات و قني والمتصد الاشعني والاشعات والمتصد

اكرين الله كثرياا والذاكرات أعد الله لم والصائمات واحلافظني ف روجهم واحلافظات والذ {35مغفرةا وأجراا عظيماا }

Surely the Muslim men and the Muslim women, and the Momineen and the Mominaat, and the obedient men and the obedient women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women, and the humble men and the humble women, and the charitable men and the charitable women, and the Fasting men and the Fasting women, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard, and the men who do Zikr of Allah a lot, and the women who do Zikr - Allah has Prepared for them Forgiveness and a Mighty Recompense [33:35]

ومن م وما كان لمؤمن وال مؤمنة إذا قضى الله ورسوله أمراا أن يكون لم الي رة من أمره {36ي عص الله ورسوله ف قد ضل ضلالا مبيناا }

And it was not for a Momin, nor for a Momina, when Allah and His Rasool decide a matter that the choice would happen to be for them from their matter. And one who disobeys Allah and His Rasool, so he has strayed a clear straying [33:36]

Ali Bin Ibrahim said, ‘And in a report of Abu Al-Jaroud,

‘From Abu Ja’farasws regarding Hisazwj Words: And it was not for a Momin nor for a Momina, when Allah and His Rasool decide a matter that the choice would happen to be for them from their matter. And that Rasool-Allahsaww married Zaynab Bin Jahsh Al-Asadiyya to Zayd Bin Haaris. She was from the Clan of Asad Bin Khuzeyman, and she was a daughter of the paternal aunt of Rasool-Allahsaww. So she said, ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww, until there are orders for myself, I shall wait.

و من ي عص الله و رسوله ف قد ن أمرهم فأنزل اهلل: و ما كان لمؤمن و ال مؤمنة إذا قضى الله و رسوله أمراا أن يكون لم الي رة م ضل ضلالا مبيناا فقالت: يا رسول اهلل، أمري بيدك.

So Allahazwj Revealed: And it was not for a Momin nor for a Momina, when Allah and His Rasool decide a matter that the choice would happen to be for them from their matter. And one who disobeys Allah and His Rasool, so he has strayed a clear straying [33:36]. She said, ‘My matter is in your hands’.

النيب ء إىل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، فنظر إليها إياه، فمكثت عند زيد ما شاء اهلل، ث إهنما تهاجرا يف شي فزوجها)صلى اهلل عليه و آله( فأعجبته، فقال زيد: يا رسول اهلل، ائذن يل يف طلقها، فإن فيها كربا، و إهنا لتؤذيين بلساهنا، فقال رسول

«. اتق اهلل، و أمسك عليك زوجك، و أحسن إليها»اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(:

So hesaww got her married to him (Zayd). She remained with Zayd for as long as Allahazwj so Desired it. Then they quarrelled about something to Rasool-Allahsaww. So the Prophetsaww looked towards her and she astounded himsaww’. Zayd said, ‘O Rasool-Allahsaww, allow me to divorce her, for she is arrogant, and she hurts me with her tongue’. So Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘Fear Allahazwj and hold on to your spouse, and be good to her’.

ث إن زيدا طلقها، و انقضت عدتا، فأنزل اهلل نكاحها على رسول اهلل، فقال: ف لما قضى زيد منها وطراا زوجناكها.

Then Zayd divorced her, and she spent her waiting period. Then Allahazwj Revealed that she should be married to Rasool-Allahsaww, so Heazwj Said: So when Zayd had dissolved the marriage, We Married her to you [33:37]’.43

ن على المؤمنني حرج يف أزواج أدعيائهم إذا قضوا من هن وطراا زوجناكها لكي ال يكو {37وكان أمر الله مفعوالا }

And when you said to the one whom Allah had Favoured upon and you had favoured upon: ‘Withhold your wife to yourself and fear Allah!’, and you concealed within yourself what Allah would be Manifesting, and you feared the people while Allah is more deserving that you fear Him. So when Zayd had dissolved the marriage, We Married her to you so that there would not happen to be any uneasiness upon the Momineen regarding the wives of their adopted sons when they had dissolved their marriages from them; and the Command of Allah Will always be Done [33:37]

وكان لله يف الذين خلوا من ق بل سنة ا ما كان على النيب من حرج فيما ف رض الله له {38أمر الله قدراا مقدوراا }

There was no blame upon the Prophet regarding what Allah Imposed to Him, being a Sunnah of Allah regarding those who have gone before, and the Command of Allah was a Decree Ordained [33:38]

ابن بابويه، قال: حدثنا أمحد بن زياد بن جعفر المداين )رضي اهلل عنه(، و احلسني بن إبراهيم بن أمحد بن ههام املكتب، و علي بن عبد اهلل الوراق )رضي اهلل عنه(، قالوا: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، قال: حدثنا القاسم بن حممد الربمكي، قال:

دثنا أبو الصلت الروي، قال: ملا مجع املأمون لعلي بن موسى الرضا )عليهما السلم( أهل املقاالت من أهل اإلسلم و من حالديانات: من اليهود و النصارى و اجملوس و الصابئني و سائر أهل املقاالت، فلم يقم أحد اال و قد ألزمه حجته كأنه القم

Ibn Babuwayh said, ‘Ahmad Bin Ziyad Bin Ja’far Al Hamdany narrated to us along with Al Husayn Bin Ibrahim Bin Ahmad Bin Hisham Al Maktab, and Ali Bin Abdullah Al Waraq, from Ali Bin Ibrahim Bin Hashim, from Al Qasim Bin Muhammad Al Barmakky, from Abu Al Salt Al Harawy who said,

‘When Al-Mamoun gathered to Ali Al-Rezaasws, the debaters from the people of Al-Islam and from the Religions of the Jews, and the Christians, and the Magians, and the Sabean, and the rest of the debaters, so no one stood up except that heasws necessitated the proof as if he had swallowed a stone.

«.نعم»قام إليه علي بن حممد بن اجلهم، فقال: يا بن رسول اهلل، أتقول بعصمة األنبياء قال:

Ali Bin Muhammad Al-Jaham stood up and said, ‘O sonasws of Rasool-Allahsaww! Are youasws speaking for the infallibility of the Prophetsas?’ Heasws said: ‘Yes’.

قال: فما تقول يف قول اهلل تعاىل: و عصى آدم ربه ف غوى

He said, ‘So what are youasws saying with regards to the Words of Allahazwj the Exalted: and you concealed within yourself what Allah would be Manifesting [33:37]?’

So Al Rezaasws said: ‘Woe be unto you - O Ali – fear Allahazwj and do not attach the immoralities to the Prophetsas of Allahazwj! And do not interpret the Book of Allahazwj by your opinion, for Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic has Said: And none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in the Knowledge [3:7].

ه أحق أن ختهاه فإن و أما حممد )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و قول اهلل تعاىل: و ختفي يف ن فسك ما الله مبديه و ختهى الناس و الل زواجه يف دار الدنيا، و أساء أزواجه يف دار الخرة، و أهنن أمهات املؤمنني. اهلل تعاىل عرف نبيه )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( أساء أ

And as for Muhammadsaww and the Words of Allahazwj the Exalted: and you concealed within yourself what Allah would be Manifesting, and you feared the people while Allah is more deserving that you fear Him [33:37], so Allahazwj had introduced to Hisazwj Prophetsaww the names of hissaww wives in the house of the world, and the names of hissaww wives in the House of the Hereafter, and they are the Mothers of the Momineen.

: زينب بنت جحش، و هي يومئذ حتت زيد بن حارثة، فأخفى رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( اسها -سى لهمن -و إحداهنيف نفسه، و مل يبده، لكي ال يقول أحد من املنافقني إنه قال يف امرأة يف بيت رجل إهنا إحدى أزواجه من أمهات املؤمنني، و

ى الناس و الله أحق أن ختهاه يعين يف نفسك، خهي قول املنافقني، فقال اهلل تعاىل: و خته

And one of them was – the one called Zaynab Bint Jahsh, and in those days she was under (wife of) Zayd Bin Haarisa. So Rasool-Allahsaww concealed her name within himselfsaww, and there was no need for it, so that no one from the hypocrites could say, ‘Hesaww is referring to a woman in another man’s house as one of hissaww wives from the Mothers of the Momineen’. And hesaww feared the speech of the hypocrites, so Allahazwj the Exalted Said: and you feared the people while Allah is more deserving that you fear Him [33:37], Meaning within himselfsaww.

و إن اهلل عز و جل ما توىل تزوي أحد من خلقه إال تزوي حواء من آدم )عليه السلم(، و زينب من رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه «.نها وطراا زوجناكها الية، و فاطمة من علي )عليهما السلم(و آله(، بقوله: ف لما قضى زيد م

And that Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic did not get Married any one from Hisazwj creatures except for the marriage of Adamas with Hawwaas, and Zaynab with Rasool-Allahsaww by Hisazwj Speech: So when Zayd had dissolved the marriage, We Married her to you [33:37] – the Verse, and Fatimaasws with Aliasws’.

He (the narrator) said: ‘Ali Bin Muhammad Bin Al-Jahm cried out and said, ‘O sonasws of Rasool-Allahsaww! I hereby repent to Allahazwj the Exalted: from speaking regarding Hisazwj Prophetsas, after this day, except with what youasws have mentioned’.44

وعنه، قال: حدثنا متيم بن عبد اهلل بن متيم القرشي )رضي اهلل عنه(، قال: حدثين أيب، عن محدان بن سليمان النيسابوري، عن علي بن حممد بن اجلهم، قال: حضرت جملس املأمون، و عنده الرضا علي بن موسى )عليهما السلم( فقال له املأمون: يا ابن

And from him (Al Sadouq) who said, ‘It was narrated to us by Tameem Bin Abdullah Bin Tameem Al Qarshy, from his father, from Hamdan Bin Suleyman Al Neysaboury, from Ali Bin Muhammad Bin Al Jaham who said,

‘I attended a gathering of Al-Mamoun, and in his presence was Al-Reza Aliasws Bin Musaasws. Mamoun said to himasws, ‘O sonasws of Rasool-Allahsaww! Isn’t is from yourasws words that the Prophetsas are infallible?’ Heasws said: ‘Yes’.

اها يف مواضعها و معناها عن الرضا )عليه السلم(، إىل أن قال املأمون: فأخربين عن فسأله املأمون عن آيات يف األنبياء، و ذكرنيه الله و ختفي يف ن فسك ما الله مبد قول اهلل تعاىل: و إذ ت قول للذي أن عم الله عليه و أن عمت عليه أمسك عليك زوجك و اتق

و ختهى الناس و الله أحق أن ختهاه.

Al Mamoun asked himasws about certain Verses regarding the (various) Prophetsas, and we mentioned it in their places, along with their meaning from Al Rezaasws, up to the point where Al Mamoun said, ‘Inform me about the Words of Allahazwj the Exalted: And when you said to the one whom Allah had Favoured upon and you had favoured upon: ‘Withhold your wife to yourself and fear Allah!’, and you concealed within yourself what Allah would be Manifesting, and you feared the people while Allah is more deserving that you fear Him’.

إن رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( قصد دار زيد بن حارثة بن شراحيل الكليب يف أمر أراده، فرأى »قال الرضا )عليه السلم(: ك تنزيه اهلل تعاىل عن قول من زعم أن امللئكة بنات اهلل تعاىل، امرأته تغتسل، فقال لا: سبحان اهلل الذي خلقك! و إنا أراد بذل

عظيماا. فقال اهلل تعاىل: أ فأصفاكم ربكم بالبنني و اختذ من الملئكة إناثاا إنكم لت قولون ق والا

Al-Rezaasws said: ‘Rasool-Allahsaww went to the house of Zayd Bin Harisa Bin Sharaheel Al-Kalby regarding a matter hesaww intended, and hesaww saw his wife washing, so hesaww said to her: ‘Glorious is Allahazwj Who Created you!’ And rather, hesaww meant by that Allahazwj is far more Exalted from the words of the one who claims that the Angels are daughters of Allahazwj the Exalted: Has then your Lord Distinguished you with the sons, and Taken daughters from the Angels? You are speaking a grievous word [17:40].

الذي خلقك أن يتخذ له ولدا حيتاج إىل هذا التطهري و االغتسال! فقال النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( ملا رآها تغتسل: سبحان

Therefore, the Prophetsaww said when hesaww saw her washing: ‘Glorious is the Oneazwj Who Created you, that Heazwj should Take a child for Himselfazwj being needy to this cleansing and the washing!’

ء الرسول )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و قوله لا: سبحان الذي خلقك، فلم يعلم زيد ما فلما عاد زيد إىل منزله أخربته امرأته مبجي أراد بذلك، فظن أنه قال ذلك ملا أعجبه من حسنها،

So when Zayd returned to his house, his wife informed him of the coming of the Rasoolsaww and hissaww words to her: ‘‘Glorious is the Oneazwj Who Created you’, but Zayd did not know what hesaww meant by that. So he thought that hesaww said that when hesaww was fascinated from her beauty.

ول اهلل، إن امرأيت يف خلقها سوء، و إين أريد طلقها. فقال له النيب )صلى فجاء إيل النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، فقال له: يا رس اهلل عليه و آله(: أمسك عليك زوجك، و اتق اهلل.

So he came to the Prophetsaww and said to himsaww, ‘My wife, her mannerisms are evil, and I want to divorce her’. The Prophetsaww said to her: ‘Withhold your wife to yourself and fear Allah! [33:37].

و قد كان اهلل تعاىل عرفه عدد أزواجه، و أن تلك املرأة منهن، فأخفى ذلك يف نفسه، و مل يبده لزيد، و خهي الناس أن يقولوا: بذلك، فأنزل اهلل تعاىل: و إذ ت قول للذي إن حممدا )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( يقول ملواله: إن امرأتك ستكون يل زوجة، فيعيبونه

في يف ن فسك ما الله مبديه و أن عم الله عليه يعين باإلسلم و أن عمت عليه يعين بالعتق أمسك عليك زوجك و اتق الله و خت ن ختهاه، ختهى الناس و الله أحق أ

And Allahazwj had already introduced the number of hissaww wives to him, and that very woman was from them, but hesaww concealed that within himself and did not manifest it to Zayd, and hesaww feared the people lest they be saying, ‘Muhammadsaww is saying to hissaww slave: ‘Your wife would be becoming mysaww wife’, and they would be faulting himsaww with that. Thus, Allahazwj the Exalted Revealed: And when you said to the one whom Allah had Favoured upon and you had favoured upon: ‘Withhold your wife to yourself and fear Allah!’, and you concealed within yourself what Allah would be Manifesting, and you feared the people while Allah is more deserving that you fear Him’.

اهلل عليه و آله(، و أنزل بذلك قرآنا، فقال عز ث إن زيد بن حارثة طلقها، و اعتدت منه، فزوجها اهلل تعاىل من نبيه حممد )صلىهم إذا قضوا من هن وطراا و كان أمر و جل: ف لما قضى زيد منها وطراا زوجناكها لكي ال يكون على المؤمنني حرج يف أزواج أدعيائ

Then Zayd Bin Harisa divorced her, and she observed the waiting period from him, and Allahazwj the Exalted got her married to Hisazwj Prophetsaww, Muhammadsaww, and Revealed the Quran (Verses) with that, so the Mighty and Majestic Said: So when Zayd had dissolved the marriage, We Married her to you so that there would

not happen to be any uneasiness upon the Momineen regarding the wives of their adopted sons when they had dissolved their marriages from them; and the Command of Allah Will always be Done [33:37].

«. عز و جل أن املنافقني سيعيبونه بتزوبجها، فأنزل اهلل تعاىل: ما كان على النيب من حرج فيما ف رض الله له ث علم اهلل

Then Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Knew that the hypocrites will be faulting himsaww, so Allahazwj the Exalted Revealed: There was no blame upon the Prophet regarding what Allah Imposed to Him [33:38]’.

و أوضحت يل ما كان ملتبسا علي، فجزاك اهلل تعاىل عن أنبيائه، و عن -يا ابن رسول اهلل -فقال املأمون: لقد شفيت صدري اإلسلم خريا.

So Al-Mamoun said, ‘You have healed my chest, O sonasws of Rasool-Allahsaww, and clarified for me what was confusing upon me. May Allahazwj the Exalted Recompense you one behalf of Hisazwj Prophetsas, and on behalf of Al Islam, goodly’’.45

VERSES 39 & 40

ا إال الله الذين ي ب لغون رساالت الله وخيهونه و وكفى بالله حسيباا ال خيهون أحدا{39}

Those who deliver the Messages of Allah and fear Him, and do not fear anyone except Allah; and suffice with Allah as a Reckoner [33:39]

وكان الله بكل شيء لكم ول كن رسول الله وخامت النبيني ما كان حممد أبا أحد من رجا {40عليماا }

Muhammad was not a father of anyone of your men, but is a Rasool of Allah and last of the Prophets, and Allah would always be Aware of all things [33:40]

بعضنا بعضا و قد ادعى هو زيدا! علي بن إبراهيم، قال: هذه نزلت يف شأن زيد بن حارثة، قالت قريش: يعرينا حممد أن يدعي فقال اهلل: ما كان حممد أبا أحد من رجالكم يعين يومئذ أنه ليس بأيب زيد.

Ali Bin Ibrahim said,

‘This was Revealed regarding the importance of Zayd Bin Haarisa. The Quraysh said, ‘Muhammadsaww reproaches us if we make a claim on each other, and hesaww has made a claim, and he is Zayd!’ So Allahazwj Said: Muhammad was not a father

of anyone of your men [33:40], Meaning, at that time hesaww was not the father of Zayd’.

قال: قوله: و خامت النبيني يعين ال نيب بعد حممد )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(.

He said, ‘Hisazwj Words: and the last of the Prophets [33:40]. It Means that there is no Prophetsaww after himsaww’.46

VERSES 41 & 42

{41ي ها الذين آمنوا اذكروا الله ذكراا كثرياا }يا أ O you who believe! Do Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41]

{42وسبحوه بكرةا وأصيلا }And Glorify Him morning and evening [33:42]

Abundant Zikr – Tasbeeh of Fatima Al-Zahraasws

دثنا أمحد بن هوذة الباهلي، عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق النهاوندي، عن عبد اهلل بن محاد، عن حممد بن مسلم قال: سعت أبا ح جعفر عليه السلم يقول تسبيح فاطمة سلم اهلل عليها من ذكر اهلل الكثري الذي قال اهلل عزوجل )اذكروا اهلل ذكرا كثريا(

Ahmad Bin Howzat narrated to us, from Ibrahim Bin Is’haq Al-Nahawandy, from Abdullah Bin Hamaad, from Muhammad Bin Muslim who said,

‘I heard Abu Ja’farasws saying: ‘The Glorification (تسبيح) of Fatimaasws is from the frequent Mentioning’s for which Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Says: Do Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41]’.47

ثري ابن بابويه، مرسل: عن الصادق )عليه السلم(، أنه سئل عن قول اهلل عز و جل: اذكروا الله ذكراا كثرياا، ما هذا الذكر الك «.من سبح تسبيح فاطمة )عليها السلم( فقد ذكر الذكر الكثري»قال:

abundant Zikr?’ Heasws said: ‘The one who Glorifies by the Glorification of Fatimaasws, so he has done Zikr of abundant Zikr’.48

وعنه، قال: حدثنا احلسني بن أمحد، عن حممد بن عيسى، عن يونس، عن إساعيل بن عمار، قال: قلت أليب عبد اهلل )عليه السلم(: قول اهلل عز و جل: اذكروا الله ذكراا كثرياا ما حده

And from him, from Al-Husayn Bin Ahmad, from Muhammad Bin Isa, from Yunus, from Ismail Bin Amaar who said,

‘I said to Abu Abdullahasws, ‘The Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic: Do Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41], what is its limit?’

علم فاطمة )عليها السلم( أن تكرب أربعا و ثلثني تكبرية، و تسبح ثلثا و ثلثني إن رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(»قال: «.تسبيحة، و حتمد ثلثا و ثلثني حتميدة، فإذا فعلت ذلك بالليل مرة، و بالنهار مرة، فقد ذكرت اهلل ذكرا كثريا

Heasws said: ‘Rasool-Allahsaww taught Fatimaasws the Takbeer (Exclamation of Greatness) of thirty four Takbeers, and Tasbeeh (Glorification) of thirty three Glorifications, and Praise (Tahmeed) of thirty three Praises. So when sheasws did that once at night and once in the morning, then sheasws did Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41]’.49

Abundant Zikr – Other

علي بن جعفر، يف )رسالته(: عن أخيه موسى بن جعفر )عليهما السلم(، قال: سألته عن قول اهلل عز و جل: اذكروا الله ذكراا «. نعم»كثرياا، قال: قلت: من ذكر اهلل مائيت مرة، كثري هو قال:

Ali son of Ja’farasws, in his letter, from his brotherasws Musa Bin Ja’farasws, said, ‘I asked himasws about the Words of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic: Do Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41]. One who does Zikr of Allahazwj two hundred times, is it abundant?’ Heasws said: ‘Yes’’.50

Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Moalla Bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Ali A Washa, from Dawood Al Hammar,

‘From Abu Abdullahasws, similar to it, and heasws said: ‘The one who frequents the Zikr of Allahazwj, Allahazwj would Shade him in the Paradise’.51

Abundant Zikr – the most difficult

ء أشد عليه من ثلث خصال ن بهي يف كتاب الصال عن زيد الهحام قال: قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلم: ما اب تلي المؤم نصاف من ن فسه، و ذكر الله كثرياا، أما إين ال أقول سبحان الله و حيرمها، قيل: و ما هي قال: المواساة يف ذات يده، و اإل

In the book Al Khisalm, from Zayd Bin Al Shaham who said,

‘Abu Abdullahasws said: ‘The Momin does not get Tried by anything more difficult upon him than three qualities’. It was said, ‘And what are these? Heasws said: ‘The equalisation (with another Momin) regarding what is in his hand, and the fairness from himself, and abundant Zikr of Allahazwj. But, Iasws am not saying: ‘Glorious is Allahazwj, and the Praise is for Allahazwj, and there is no god except Allahazwj, and Allahazwj is Greatest!’ But, Zikr of Allahazwj during what is Permissible for him and Zikr of Allah during what is Prohibited unto him’’.52

Zikr is without limitations

ة من أصحابنا عن سهل بن زياد عن جعفر بن حممد األشعري عن ا عن أيب عبد الله ) عليه السلم ( قال ما من عد ا بن القد ء إال و له حد ي نتهي إليه إال الذكر ف ليس له حد ي نتهي إليه شي

A number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ja’far Bin Muhammad Al Ashary, from Ibn Al Qadah,

(It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullahasws having said: ‘There is none from the things except that there is an ultimate point to it except for the Zikr (Mention of Allahazwj) for there is no limit for it one can end up to.

ه إال رض الله عز و جل الفرائض فمن أداهن ف هو حدهن و شهر رمضان فمن صامه ف هو حد ف ه و احل فمن ح ف هو حد بجعل له حداا ي نتهي إليه الذكر فإن الله عز و جل مل ي رض منه بالقليل و مل

Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Imposed the Obligations, so the one who fulfils these, so it would be its limit (reached), and the Month of Ramazan, so the one who Fasts it, so it would be its limit (reached), and the Hajj, so the one performs Hajj, so it would be its limit (reached), except for the Zikr (Mention of Allahazwj), for Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic is not Pleased from it with the little but did not Make a limit for it either for one to end up to it’.

Then heasws recited this Verse: O you who believe! Do Zikr of Allah, abundant Zikr [33:41] And Glorify Him morning and evening [33:42], and heasws said: ‘Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic did not Make a limit for it for one to end up to. And it was so that myasws fatherasws used to do a lot of Zikr. Iasws had walked with himasws and heasws was doing Zikr of Allahazwj and was eating food along with it while heasws was doing Zikr of Allahazwj. And heasws used to narrate to the people and that would not pre-occupy himasws from doing Zikr of Allahazwj (simultaneously).

تطلع الهمس و يأمر بالقراءة من كان ي قرأ نت أرى لسانه الزقاا حبنكه ي قول ال إله إال الله و كان بجمعنا ف يأمرنا بالذكر حىت و ك منا و من كان ال ي قرأ منا أمره بالذكر

And Iasws used to see hisasws tongue move in hisasws jaws saying: ‘There is no god except Allahazwj’ ( ه and heasws used to gather us and order us with the Zikr (لا إلاها إلا للااuntil the emergence of the sun, and heasws would order with the recitation the ones from us who could read, and the ones of us who could not read, heasws would order him with the Zikr.

ء ألهل ت هجره الهياطني و يضيملئكة و و الب يت الذي ي قرأ فيه القرآن و يذكر الله عز و جل فيه تكث ر ب ركته و حتضره ال تقل ب ركته و ت هجره ء الكوكب الدري ألهل األرض و الب يت الذي ال ي قرأ فيه القرآن و ال يذكر الله فيه السماء كما يضي الهياطني الملئكة و حتضره

And the house in which the Quran is recited and Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic is mentioned therein would be with abundant Blessings, and the Angels would attend it, and the Satansla would flee, and it would shine to the inhabitants of the sky just like the brilliant star does for the inhabitants of the earth. And the house in which the Quran is not recited, nor is Allahazwj Mentioned therein would be of little Blessings and the Angels would flee from it and the Satansla would attend it.

كم و أزكاها عند مليككم و خري قد قال رسول الله ) صلى اهلل عليه وآله ( أ ال أخربكم خبري أعمالكم لكم أرفعها يف درجات و رهم و خري لكم من أن ت لقوا عدو ينار و الد كم ف ت قت لوهم و ي قت لوكم ف قالوا ب لى ف قال ذكر الله عز و جل كثرياا لكم من الد

And Rasool-Allahsaww has said: ‘Shall Isaww inform you with the best of your deeds which would be raising for you in your levels be the most purifying in the Presence of your Kingazwj, and better for you all than the Dinar and the Dirham, and better for you than your meeting your enemies (in battle), so you would be killing them and they would be killing you?’ So they said, ‘Yes’. So hesaww said: ‘Abundant Zikr of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic’’.

Then heasws said: ‘A man came over to the Prophetsaww and he said, ‘Who are the best ones from the people of the Masjid?’ So hesaww said: ‘The ones who most frequent the Zikr of Allahazwj’.

And Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘The one who has been Given an oft-mentioning tongue, so he has been Given the goodness of the world and the Hereafter’.53

Zikr to be done mornings and evenings

ن أبيه، مجيعا، عن احلسن بن حمبوب، ] الكليين [ عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، وأمحد بن حممد، وعلي بن إبراهيم ععن مالك بن عطية، عن أيب محزة الثمايل، عن أيب جعفر )عليه السلم( قال: ما من عبد يقول إذا أصبح قبل طلوع الهمس: "

آله " إال اهلل أكرب اهلل أكرب كبريا وسبحان اهلل بكرة وأصيل واحلمد هلل رب العاملني كثريا، ال شريك له وصلى اهلل على حممد و ابتدرهن ملك وجعلهن يف جوف جناحه وصعد هبن إىل السماء الدنيا

Al Kulayni – A number of our companions, from Sahl Bin Ziyad, and Ahmad Bin Muhammad, and Ali Bin Ibrahim, form his father, altogether, from Al Hassan Bin Mahboub, from Maalik Bin Atiyya, from Abu Hamza Al Sumaly,

Abu Ja’farasws has said: ‘There is none from a servant who says when it is the morning, before the emergence of the sun, ‘Allahazwj is the Greatest! Allahazwj is the Greatest! The Greatness and Glory be to Allahazwj morning and evening; and the Abundant Praise is for Allahazwj Lordazwj of the Worlds. There is no associate for Himazwj and Salawat of Allahazwj be upon Muhammadsaww and hissaww Progenyasws’, except that an Angel takes the initiative and makes these (words) to be in the middle of his wing and ascends with these to the sky of the world.

فتقول امللئكة: ما معك فيقول: معي كلمات قالن رجل من املؤمنني وهي كذا وكذا، فيقولون: رحم اهلل من قال هؤالء الكلمات وغفر له،

So the (other) Angels say: ‘What is with you?’ So he says: ‘With me are words spoken by a man from the Momineen and these are such and such’. So they say: ‘May Allahazwj have Mercy upon the one who said these words, and Forgive him’.

وغفر له حىت ينتهي هبن إىل محلة قال: وكلما مر بسماء قال ألهلها مثل ذلك، فيقولون: رحم اهلل من قال هؤالء الكلمات العرش، فيقول لم: إن معي كلمات تكلم هبن رجل من املؤمنني وهي كذا وكذا فيقولون: رحم اهلل هذا العبد وغفر له انطلق هبن

The Imamasws said: ‘And every time he passes by a sky, its inhabitants say similar to that, so they say: ‘May Allahazwj have Mercy upon the one who said these words, and

Forgive him’, until he ends up with these to the bearers of the Throne, so he says to them: ‘With me are words spoken by a man from the Believers, and these are such and such’. So they say: ‘May Allahazwj have Mercy on this servant and Forgive him. Go with these to Keeper of the treasures of the speech of the Believers, for these words are a treasure, until they get inscribed in the Register of the Treasures’.54

Two freedoms are achieved by Zikr

وعنه: عن احلسني بن حممد، عن معلى بن حممد، و عدة من أصحابنا، عن أمحد بن حممد مجيعا، عن احلسن بن علي الوشاء، لى اهلل عليه و آله(: من أكثر ذكر اهلل عز و جل قال رسول اهلل )ص»عن داود بن سرحان، عن أيب عبد اهلل )عليه السلم(، قال:

«.أحبه اهلل، و من ذكر اهلل كثريا كتبت له براءتان: براءة من النار، و براءة من النفاق

And from him, from Al-Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Moala Bin Muhammad, and a number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad altogether, from Al-Hassan Bin Al-Al-Washa, from Dawood Bin Sarhaan,

Abu Abdullahasws says that Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘The one who frequents in Zikr of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic, Allahazwj Loves him. And the one who does Zikr of Allahazwj frequently, two freedoms would be Written for him – Freedom from the Fire, and the freedom from the hypocrisy’.55

The doers of abundant Zikr

محيد بن زياد عن ابن ساعة عن وهيب بن حفص عن أيب بصري عن أيب عبد اهلل عليه السلم قال: شيعتنا الذين إذا خلوا ذكروا اهلل كثريا.

Hameed Bin Ziyad, from Ibn Sama’at, from Waheeb Bin Hafs, from Abu Baseer, who narrates:

‘Abu Abdullahasws has said: ‘Ourasws Shias are the ones who, when alone, Do abundant Zikr of Allahazwj’.56

ن مهران، عن سيف بن عمرية، عن سليمان بن و عنه: عن عدة من أصحابنا، عن أمحد بن حممد بن خالد، عن إساعيل بمن ذكر اهلل عز و جل يف السر فقد ذكر اهلل كثريا، »عمرو، عن أيب املغرا الصاف رفعه، قال: قال أمري املؤمنني )عليه السلم(:

«. علنية و ال يذكرونه يف السرإن املنافقني كانوا يذكرون اهلل

And from him, from a number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from Ismail Bin Mahran, from Sayf Bin Umeyra, from Suleyman Bin Amro, from Abu Al Magra Al Khasaaf, raising it, said,

‘Amir-Al-Momineenasws said: ‘The one who Zikr of Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic in secret so he has remembered Allahazwj a lot. The hypocrites used to mention Allahazwj in public and did not Hisazwj Zikr in private’.57

Zikr of Aliasws is worship

ول اهلل صلى قال رس»روى الوارزمي باسناده عن جعفر بن حممد عن أبيه عن علي بن احلسني، عن أبيه عن أمرياملؤمنني قال: اهلل عليه وآله وسلم: ان اهلل جعل ألخي علي فضائل ال حتصى كثرية، فمن ذكر فضيلة من فضائله مقراا هبا غفر اهلل له ما تقدم

من ذنبه وما تأخر،

It is reported by Al Khawarizmy, by his chain,

‘From Ja’far Bin Muhammadasws, from hisasws fatherasws, from Aliasws Bin Al-Husaynasws, from hisasws fatherasws, from Amir Al-Momineenasws having said: ‘Rasool-Allahsaww said: ‘Allahazwj Made so many merits for mysaww brother Aliasws which cannot be counted. So the one who mentioned hisasws a merit from hisasws merits, acknowledging these, Allahazwj would Forgive his sins for him, whatever he has committed and what he has yet to commit.

ومن كتب فضيلة من فضائله مل تزل امللئكة تستغفر له ما بقي لذلك الكتاب رسم،

And one who write a merit from hisasws merits, the Angels would not cease to seek Forgiveness for him for as long as the print of that book remains.

ومن استمع إىل فضيلة من فضائله غفر اهلل له الذنوب اليت اكتسبها باالستماع،

And one who listens intently to a merit from hisasws merits, Allahazwj would Forgive the sins for him which he had amassed by the listening.

ومن نظر إىل كتاب من فضائله غفر اهلل له الذنوب اليت اكتسبها بالنظر،

And one who looks at a book of hisasws merits, Allahazwj would Forgive the sins for him which he had amassed by the looking’.

قال: النظر إىل أخي علي بن أيب طالب عبادة وذكره عبادة، وال يقبل اهلل ايان عبد إال بواليته والرباءة من اعدائهث

Then hesaww said: ‘The looking at mysaww brother Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws is worship, and doing hisasws Zikr is worship, and Allahazwj will not Accept the Eman of a servant unless it is with hisasws Wilayah and the disavowment from hisasws enemies’’.58

ة النهروان، و أتى رأس اليهود إىل علي بن أيب طالب )عليه السلم( عند منصرفه من وقع»عن أيب جعفر )عليه السلم(، قال: يا أمري املؤمنني، إين أريد أن أسألك عن أشياء ال يعلمها إال نيب، أو وصي نيب، فإن شئت هو جالس يف مسجد الكوفة، فقال:

سألتك، و إن شئت أعفيك. قال: سل عما بدا لك، يا أخا اليهود.

‘From Abu Ja’farasws having said: ‘The chief of the Jews came to Aliasws Bin Abu Talibasws during hisasws being free from the event of Al Nahrwan, and heasws was seated in Masjid Al Kufa. He said, ‘O Amir Al Momineenasws! I want to ask youasws about thing which none would know except a Prophetas of a successorasws of a Prophetas. So if youasws so like, I would ask, and if youasws so like, I will excuse youasws’. Heasws said: ‘Ask, whatever comes to you, O Jewish brother’.

ده، و أن قال: إنا جند يف الكتاب أن اهلل عز و جل إذا بعث نبيا أوحى إليه أن يتخذ من أهل بيته من يقوم بأمر أمته من بع يعهد إليهم فيه عهدا حيتذى عليه،

He said, ‘We find in the Book that Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic, whenever Heazwj Sent a Prophetas, Revealed unto himas that Heazwj would be Taking a Covenant from the people of hisas household (from) one who would be standing with the Command of hisas community from after himas, and that Heazwj Covenanted a pact to them Heazwj would be Seizing themas upon.

و يعمل به يف أمته من بعده، و أن اهلل عز و جل يتحن األوصياء يف حياة األنبياء، و يتحنهم بعد وفاتم،

And heas should act in accordance with in hisas community from after himas, and that Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic would Test the successorsas during the life-time of the Prophetsas, and Heazwj would Test themas after theiras passing away.

ألوصياء يف حياة األنبياء، و كم يتحنهم بعد وفاتم من مرة، و إىل ما يصري آخر أمر األوصياء، إذا فأخربنا: كم يتحن اهلل ا رضي حمنتهم

So, inform us, how many times does Allahazwj Test the successorsas during the life-time of the Prophetsas, and how many times after theiras passing away, and to what would the last command of the successorsas come to be when theiras Test is satisfied?’

فقال له علي )عليه السلم(: و اهلل الذي ال إله غريه، الذي فلق البحر لبين إسرائيل، و أنزل التوراة على موسى )عليه السلم( لئن ه قال: نعم.أخربتك حبق عما تسأل عنه، لتقرن ب

Aliasws said to him: ‘By Allahazwj, the One, there being no god other than Himazwj, Who Split the sea for the Children of Israel, and Revealed the Torah unto Musaas! If Iasws were to inform you with the truth of what you asked about, would you attach with it?’ He said, ‘Yes’.

قال: نعم. قال )عليه السلم(: و الذي فلق البحر لبين إسرائيل، و أنزل التوراة على موسى )عليه السلم(، لئن أجبتك لتسلمن

Heasws said: ‘By the Oneazwj Who Split the sea for the Children of Israel, and Revealed the Torah unto Musaas! If Iasws were to answer you, will you become a Muslim?’ He said, ‘Yes’.

فقال علي )عليه السلم(: إن اهلل عز و جل يتحن األوصياء يف حياة األنبياء يف سبعة مواطن ليبتلي طاعتهم، فإذا رضي طاعتهم بعد وفاتم، و تصري طاعة األوصياء يف أعناق األمم من يقول و حمنتهم أمر األنبياء أن يتخذوهم أولياء يف حياتم، و أوصياء

بطاعة األنبياء،

So Aliasws said: ‘Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Tested the successorsas during the life-time of the Prophets, in seven places, in Order to Try theiras obedience. So when theiras obedience and effort was satisfactory, Heazwj Commanded the Prophetsas that theyas should take themas as guardians during theiras life-time, and as successorsas after theiras passing away, and the obedience of the successorsas came to be in the necks of the communities, from the ones who were saying (believing) in the obedience of the Prophetsas.

ث يتحن األوصياء بعد وفاة األنبياء )عليهم السلم( يف سبعة مواطن ليبلوا صربهم، فإذا رضي حمنتهم ختم لم بالههادة، ليلحقهم باألنبياء و قد أكمل لم السعادة.

Then Heazwj Tested the successorsas after the passing away of the Prophetsas, in seven places in order to Try theiras patience. So when theiras effort was satisfactory, Heazwj Sealed for themas with the testimony, to join themas with the Prophetsas, and Perfected the felicity for them’.

فأخربين، كم امتحنك اهلل يف حياة حممد من مرة، و كم امتحنك بعد وفاته من -يا أمري املؤمنني -قال له رأس اليهود: صدقت مرة، و إىل ما يصري أمرك

The chief of the Jews said to himasws, ‘Youasws speak the truth, O Amir Al Momineenasws! Inform me, how may time did Allahazwj Test youasws during the life-time

of Muhammadsaww, and how many times did Heazwj Test youasws after hissaww passing away, and to what has yourasws matter come to be?’

خا اليهود. فقام إليه مجاعة من أصحابه، فقالوا: يا أمري فأخذ علي )عليه السلم( بيده، و قال: اهنض بنا أنبئك بذلك، يا أاملؤمنني، أنبئنا بذلك معه. فقال: إين أخاف أن ال حتتمله قلوبكم. قالوا: و مل ذلك، يا أمري املؤمنني قال: ألمور بدت يل من

كثري منكم.

Aliasws grabbed his hand and said: ‘Arise with us, Iasws shall inform you of that, O Jewish brother’. So a group of hisasws companions arose and they said, ‘O Amir Al Momineenasws! Inform us of that along with him’. Heasws said: ‘Iasws fear that your heart would not be able to bear it’. They said, ‘And why is that so, O Amir Al Momineenasws?’ Heasws said: ‘The matters which appeared to measws from most of you!’

فقام إليه األشرت، فقال: يا أمري املؤمنني، أنبئنا بذلك، فو اهلل إنا لنعلم أنه ما على ظهر األرض وصي نيب سواك، و إنا لنعلم أن ( نبيا سواه، و أن طاعتك لفي أعناقنا موصولة بطاعة نبينا )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(.اهلل ال يبعث بعد نبينا )صلى اهلل عليه و آله

(Malik) Al Ashtar stood up and he said, ‘O Amir Al Momineenasws! Inform us of what, for by Allahazwj, we know for certain that there is no successorasws of a Prophetsaww upon the surface of the earth besides youasws, and we know for certain that Allahazwj will not be Sending a Prophetas after our Prophetsaww besides himsaww, and that obedience to youasws are in our necks linked with the obedience to our Prophetsaww’.

ه السلم(، فأقبل على اليهودي، فقال: يا أخا اليهود، إن اهلل عز و جل امتحنين يف حياة نبينا )صلى اهلل عليه فجلس علي )علي قال: فيم، و فيم، يا أمري املؤمنني . بنعمة اهلل له مطيع -من غري تزكية لنفسي -و آله( يف سبعة مواطن، فوجدين فيهن

So Aliasws sat down and faced towards the Jews, and heasws said: ‘O Jewish brother! Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Tested measws during the life-time of our Prophetsaww, in seven places, and Heazwj Found measws in these – from without there being any further purification of myselfasws – by the Grace of Allahazwj, as being obedient to Himazwj’. He said, ‘In what condition, and in what condition, O Amir Al Momineenasws?

فإن -يا أخا اليهود -: و أما الامسة-و ساق احلديث بذكر االوىل، و الثانية، و الثالثة، و الرابعة، إىل أن قال -قال: أما أولنلعرب جتمعت، و عقدت بينها عقدا و ميثاقا ال ترجع من وجهها حىت تقتل رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، و تقتلنا قريها و ا

معه معاشر بين عبد املطلب،

Heasws said: ‘As for the first of these (Tests), - and the main part of the Hadeeth is the mention of the first, and the second, and the third, and the fourth, up to the point heasws said: ‘And as for the fifth, O Jewish brother! So it was when Quraysh and the Arabs gathered, and pacted between them with a pact and a covenant that they will not return from their direction until they kill Rasool-Allahsaww, and kill usasws, the group of the clan of Abdul Muttalibasws along with himsaww.

ث أقبلت حبدها و حديدها حىت أناخت علينا باملدينة، واثقة بأنفسها فيما توجهت له،

Then they came with their people and their irons (weapons) until they came upon us at Al Medina, and they were very confidence with themselves regarding what they were aiming for.

فهبط جربئيل )عليه السلم( على النيب )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( فأنبأه بذلك، فخندق على نفسه، و من معه من املهاجرين و لندق حماصرة لنا، ترى يف أنفسها القوة، و فينا الضعف، ترعد، و تربق،األنصار، فقدمت قريش، فأقامت على ا

Then Jibraeelas descended unto the Prophetsaww and gave himsaww the news of that. So hesaww dug a trench around himselfsaww, and the ones with himsaww from the Emigrants and the Helpers. So Quraysh marched and stood at the trench besieging us, to show their strength, and among us was the weakness, and shudders, and shouts.

و رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله( يدعوها إىل اهلل عز و جل، و يناشدها بالقرابة و الرحم، فتأىب عليه، و ال يزيدها ذلك إال عتوا، و فارسها فارس العرب يومئذ عمرو بن عبد ود، يهدر كالبعري املغتلم، يدعو إىل الرباز، و يرجتز، و خيطر برحمه مرة، و بسيفه

مرة،

And Rasool-Allahsaww invited them to Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic, and adjusted them with the relationship and the womb-relationships. But, they refused to himsaww, and that did not increase them except in insolence. And the main horseman of the Arabs in those days was Amro Bin Abd Wadd, growling like a raging camel, calling to the duel, and reciting war poems, and challenging with his spear at times, and by his sword at times.

ال يقدم عليه مقدم، و ال يطمع فيه طامع، و ال محية تيجه، و ال بصرية تهجعه، فأهنضين إليه رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و -و ضرب بيده إىل ذي الفقار -آله(، و عممين بيده، و أعطاين سيفه هذا

No soldier proceeded towards him, nor did a coveting one covet with regards to it, nor was a zealot enthusiastic for it, nor were the sights encourages. So Rasool-Allahsaww lifted measws up to him, and turbaned measws by hissaww own hands, and gave measws this sword of hissaww’ – and he tapped hisasws hand upon Zil Fiqar.

فخرجت إليه، و نساء أهل املدينة بواكي إشفاقا علي من ابن عبد ود، فقتله اهلل عز و جل بيدي، و العرب ال تعد لا فارسا -و أومأ بيده إىل هامته -غريه، و ضربين هذه الضربة

‘So Iasws went out to (battle) him, and the womenfolk of the people of Al Medina were wailing in sympathy upon measws from (having to face) Amro Bin Abd Wadd. But, Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Killed him by myasws hands, and the Arabs were not counting for themselves any horseman apart from him. And he struck me with this strike – and heasws gestured by hisasws hand towards hisasws head.

فهزم اهلل قريها و العرب بذلك، و مبا كان مين فيهم من النكاية.

Allahazwj Defeated Quraysh and the Arabs by that, and due to what turmoil there was from measws, among them’.

«.ث التفت )عليه السلم( إىل أصحابه، فقال: أ ليس كذلك قالوا: بلى، يا أمري املؤمنني

Then heasws turned to face hisasws companions, and heasws said: ‘Wasn’t it like that?’ They said, ‘Yes, O Amir Al Momineenasws!’

بعد وفاة رسول اهلل )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(، ث الثانية، ث الثالثة، ث الرابعة، و ث ذكر السادسة، و السابعة، ث ذكر أول السبعو أما نفسي، فقد علم من حضر من ترى، و من غاب من أصحاب حممد )صلى اهلل عليه »ذكرها، و قال )عليه السلم( فيها:

ذي العطش الصدي،و آله( أن املوت عندي مبنزلة الهربة الباردة يف اليوم الهديد احلر من

Then heasws mentioned the sixth, and the seventh. Then heasws mentioned the first of the seven (Tests) after the passing away of Rasool-Allahsaww, then the second, then the third, then the fourth, and mentioned it and heasws said regarding it: ‘And as for myselfasws, so the ones who are present whom you see, and the ones who are absent from the companions of Muhammadsaww, that the death in myasws presence is at the status of the cold drink in a day of intense heat from one with the dry thirst.

و لقد كنت عاهدت اهلل عز و جل و رسوله )صلى اهلل عليه و آله(: أنا، و عمي محزة، و أخي جعفر، و ابن عمي عبيدة على أمر وفينا به هلل عز و جل و لرسوله،

هم فتقدمين أصحايب، و ختلفت بعدهم ملا أراد اهلل عز و جل، فأنزل اهلل فينا: من المؤمنني رجال ص دقوا ما عاهدوا الله عليه فمن هم من ي نتظر و ما بدلوا ت بديلا محزة، و جعفر، و عبيدة، و أنا «.املنتظر -و اهلل -من قضى نبه و من

So myasws companions preceded measws (to the martyrdom), and Iasws am left behind after themasws for what Allahazwj Mighty and Majestic Intends. Therefore, Allahazwj Revealed regarding us: From the Momineen there are men who ratified what they pacted with Allah upon. So, from them is one who fulfilled his vow, and from them is one who awaits, and they did not change with any alteration [33:23], being Hamzaasws, and Ja’farasws, and Ubeydaas. And Iasws, by Allahazwj, am the awaiting one’’.59
