Program Overview

Magnificent Monograms is a Wizard-based programdesigned to quickly create beautiful, artistic monograms thatcan be embroidered on almost any embroidery machine. Themix-and-match style of the program allows endlesscombinations of lettering styles and accent designs.

Both the Monogram and the Text Wizards allow the user todesignate the type of fabric on which the monogram will beapplied. The Wizard uses this information to determine theappropriate stitch spacing, amount of underlay stitching andother parameters for creating the best monogram possiblefor that fabric.

The accent designs are programmed to scale in proportionto the selected letter size. A default letter size will appear foreach style. The letters can be made larger or smaller thanthe default size.

Plain font styles have a default size of 20 millimeters. This isabout three-quarters of an inch (a millimeter conversion chartis located in the Tips and Ideas section). Certain fancymonogram styles with extensive decorations have a largersize as their default, because they can’t be reliably stitchedin very small sizes.

The Monogram Wizard is used only for one, two or three lettermonograms. The Text Wizard may be used for names as wellas monograms. Each Wizard contains accent designs andembellishments that are unique to that module.

In the Monogram Wizard, the letters are always centered withthe embellishment. In the Text Wizard, the user has a choiceof where to place the letters in relation to the embellishment. In the Text Wizard, any available embellishment can be usedwith any font.

In either Wizard, the text and the embellishment may beresized independently. The default scale of the embellishmentto the letters was used to have a pleasing scale, however thiscan be infinitely changed by the user.

In either Wizard, the letter spacing can be controlled. Becauseletters can look optically incorrect even though the spacing isnumerically correct, you can “tweak” your monogram until youare pleased with its appearance.

Monogram Wizard

The Monogram Wizard is used tocreate one, two or three lettermonograms only. On the menu bar, click on Wizards, Monogram Wizard(Fig. Int-1) or, access by clicking onthe icon on the top tool bar ofthe main screen.

In some cases, the monogram stylesare self-contained, and theembellishments are specific to theselected style. The diamond-shapedembellishments in Figure Int-2 areexamples of self-containedmonogram embellishments. Theembellishments are unique to thatspecific monogram font. Some self-contained fonts are designed for asingle initial, and the embellishmentis a permanent part of the letter. Forthese fonts, no embellishmentsappear in the Decorations screen.

The Realistic View Control is set to adefault stitch length of 10mm, justunder 1/2”. This is the longest stitchlength that the software will display.Stitches that are longer will be omittedfrom the display even though they existin the design file. Advanced SettingsText WizardIn the Text screen of theText Wizard you can clickon the Advanced button toaccess more options.

Density - The default valueis .4, which represents thedistance of four points, orfour-tenths of a millimeter, between stitches. To spread the stitches farther apart, use alarger number. To place the stitches closer together, use asmaller number. It is helpful to use a lighter density (largernumber) on very small letters and heavier density (smallernumber) on very large letters.

Pull Comp - This percentage value controls the pullcompensation that adds width to letters and shapes tocompensate for the pull of the stitches on the fabric. To seebolder columns in your letters, use a larger number. It is helpfulto add pull compensation to small lettering or to thin letterstyles.

Underlay - Check this box if you want to add underlay stitchesto your lettering. This is helpful when applying your monogramto heavily textured or napped fabrics.

Selecting the Best Font

Experience will help you learn which font is best for yourintended use. When working with Freestyle monograms orthe Text Wizard, you should look for characteristics that aresimilar or compatible to the embellishment.

For example, if your embellishment is light and airy, look for alight font so the final monogram will appear balanced. In otherinstances, you must select a narrow font that will fit within thedesired freestyle monogram frame or hoop size. The morenarrow font styles are noted in the Introduction chapter.

Some fonts require more manipulation in spacing than others, however some of the fonts that must be manually kerned(spaced) create outstanding monograms. Take a little timeto practice your kerning skill and you will soon be able to createmonograms quickly and easily using any of the fonts in theprogram.

The last designs in the selector box of the Text Wizard arespecialty fonts. Some are stand-alone fonts, designed to beused independently, without lettering typed in, to create astylish monogram. Some fonts contain capital letters that canbe used alone or in combination with other fonts to createnames.

Specialty fonts have only upper case characters. If you wantto create a name using one of these specialty fonts, here arethe suggested fonts for completing the rest of the name.

Creating Unique Monograms

The key to creating the best monograms is to make thempersonal, and make them unique.

Consider using a date instead of a name with one of thedesigns in the Special Occasion section.

Work with the placement of text in relation to the design in theText Wizard to create very special monograms. Here are acouple of exercises for you to try:

Select Design AN7257 and position the monkey so that heappears to be hanging from a letter.

Select CH19380 and make the airplane appear to be takingoff from a letter in your monogram.
