The new CGD offices willconcentrate on marketing andA&R for national and interna-tional artists. WEA Italy will han-dle distribution, accounting andthe support information services.

Bignotti says the restructuringof CGD is necessary because ofchanges within the Italian musicmarket. "CGD was a big corn -

Crown's NewOffer "Mean"Says Chiltern

Chiltern Radio Network says

Crown Communications' revisedoffer of £ 13 per share is "mean"and has forecast an increase in pre-tax profits of 93.10 to "not lessthan £ 900.003" for the year en-ding September 30 1989.

Chiltern is currently planning astock market flotation in order tofight off what it sees as a "hostileand unwelcome" partial takeoverbid from Crown (M&M Septem-ber 9).

per share was not well received byChiltern shareholders. Acceptan-ces were received for only 7,000shares, which brings Crown's to-tal stake in the Bedford -basedgroup to around 12%.

In announcing the forecast pre-tax profits, Chiltern's ChairmanPeter Burton told shareholders:"These excellent forecast profitsmake it dearer than ever how in-adequate the Crown offer really is.Shareholders should reject the

"Pan -European" may be the buzzword with the approach of thesingle European market, but LimAnderson, Managing Director ofRCA UK, says the term is "justjargon".

Anderson, who in April thisyear became the first woman to beappointed Chief Executive of amajor UK record company, insiststhat national markets in Europemow at different speeds and thatit makes no sense to evolve a pan-European marketing plan for newproduct.

GVU Managing Director Ger-hard Schulze says there were 188raids on premises suspected of be-ing used for video piracy in thefirst six months of 1989, resultingin the seizure of nearly 24.600 il-legally copied tapes.

reported slightly slower turnoverfor the first half of 1989. Thisyear's rise is 14.2% to Dfl 409million (app. L 118 million), com-pared to a 14.6% rise in the sameperiod last year to DB 358million. In volume terms, sound -carrier sales have dropped 1.6%to 18.4 million units in 1989, com-pared with sales of 18.6 millionunits in the first half of last year.

In its report, the NVPI says thegood summer weather has

possibly pressured sales but addedthat "it was too early to speak ofa turnaround in the industry'sprospects" Turnover growth

peaked at 26.3% in 1986.CD formats increased their

share to 80% of total turnovervolume while vinyl LPs were theworst hit with their market sharedropping to 18% compared with36% Mire years ago.

The NVPI report also says CDsingles sales made a breakthroughin the first half of this year. Theynearly doubled to 1.2 million unitsas turnover of the vinyl single washalved at 2.2 million units.

Turner will celebrate her50th birthday. Apart

from not lookinganywhere near her age,her vocal performance

has hardly ever beenstronger than on herlatest R&B flavoured

album 'Foreign Affair;out on Capitol.

Tina Turner and her ma-nager, Australian Roger

Davies, did not plan to releaseanother album until 1990. 'Earnerwanted to concentrate on an ac-ting career: "I went to Holly-wood in 1988 and visited everystudio house there!' she says.

"1 met with the casting peopleand they felt that I have anotherseven years of good visual quali-ty. At the time a strike was goingon and I think that when theyreturned to work, they wanted toget people who already knew thejob!' Both Timer and Davies feltit was best not to be out of the

public eye for long, and so decid-ed to do another album.

Foreign Affair was recorded atthe Hit Factory, in New York Ci-ty. Additional overdubs weredone at The Power Station (NewYork), Multi -Level (Connec-ticut), E -Zee, Mayfair and Swan -yard Studios (London) and Lion -share Studios (Los Angeles). Thealbum was mixed by Chris Lord-Alge at The Grey Room in LosAngeles. The title -track featuresMark Knopfler on guitar.

The songwriters for ForeignAffair include Tony Joe White,Albert Hammond/Holly Knight,the duo Kelly/Steinberg and DanHartman, who was also the mainproducer of the album. limieralso took to producing for thefirst time because she was nothappy with the way The Best andAsk Me How I Feel turned out.

Turner has spent four monthspromoting the LP all over theworld but she does not plan to doany live concerts, although shedoes not exclude the possibility."I am not saying I'll stop perfor-ming on stage completely. But ifthis album is a success and I

toured with it, it would be for thefans. I would get very little enjoy-ment out of it!"

Thrner is, however, keen to fur-ther her acting career. The partsshe has played so far are those ofstrong and evil women; the AcidQueen in the Who's 'Tommy'and Aunt Entity in 'Mad MaxBeyond Thunderdome'. "I wantto play the parts that the guys areplaying; I want to do what BruceWillis did in 'Die Hard' orsomething similar to whatSchwarzenegger did in 'Ter-minator'. There are enough girlsplaying those feminine parts andwhy should I be another one?Then 1 might as well stay on thestage!'

But with two more albums togo for Capitol, Anna MaeBullock will be playing the partof Tina Turner for a little longer."I do not mind going in therecording studio and promotingmy work, but I will not do asmuch press as I have done this

Melissa Etheridge - 'Brave And Crazy'Melissa Etheridge is the

first of last year'sdebuting female

singer/songwriters todeliver her follow-up

album. 'Brave AndCrary: with 'Souvenirs'as the first single, is out

on Island and shows alighter and a touch

funkier MelissaEtheridge.

Melissa Etheridge spent18 months on the road

supporting her self -titled debutLP, which was released in 1988.On the way she collected severalinternational platinum albumsand a gold album in the US. Shealso received a Grammy nomina-tion for 'Best Female Rock Per-formance'.

During two three-day breaksfrom her hectic tour scheduleearlier this year, Etheridge re-corded her second album, Brave

And Crazy, live. "We actuallyrecorded all the songs inJanuary!' she explains.,"Then wewent back out on the road and

found Bernie Larsen, my newguitarist.

"I had gone through two otherguitarists before him, but Berniewas perfect. He worked the songsup some more and I was happierwith the way some of them

sounded. So we went back intothe studio in May and re -cut halfthe songs!'

Etheridge credits her newdrummer Fritz Lewak for thefunkier touch of this album. "Ihave worked with him all yearlong. He has a real rhythm, he ispart Brazilian. The last drum-mer, Craig Krampf, played verystraightforward rock!' Bassplayer Kevin McCormick is stillin the fine -up.

Lyrically, Brave And CAW islighter than Melissa Etheridge.'I am a little less obsessive aboutthose dark things in my life.When the first album was beingwritten, I was Inside -checkingout' and hanging on to things.Now I have learned a bit aboutletting go!'

Etheridge hails fmm Leaven-worth in Kansas, but she wrotemost of the songs for Brave AndCrazy in small European hotelrooms while on tour. Royal Sta-tion was written at the Royal Sta-tion Hotel in Newcastle, UK. It

features U2's Bono on har-monica.

"We were in the studio inJanuary and U2 and BB Kingwere there remixing the singleWhen Love Comes To Shun. Oneof my producers, Niko Bolas hadworked with U2 a couple of timesand arranged a meeting withBono for me. Niko mentioned Iwas going to play some har-monica on this song and Bonooffered to play it. We set up amicrophone right them It wasvery easy, simple, quick andspontaneous, but really anhonour!'

Etheridge is now finishing herEuropean promotion tour andwill be back with her band forlive performances in Oc-tober/November. After the for-thcoming tour, she wants to lakeher lime on her third album. "IhaVe some ideas and visions thatare beyond the rock feeling ofthis album. A The Next BatchPrepare To Cross

Hot on the heels of Simple Minds, Deacon Blue,Waterboys, Big Country and The Proclairners,

Scotland has unleashed another crop of promising actswith crossover talent. The strength of the local

industry is reflected by the fact that most of the majorrecord companies now have A&R people based in

either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Music & Media looks atthe acts worth watching.

f the new wave in Englandthrew up indie labels likeStiff and Factory, Scotland

replied with the near -legendaryPostcard. The latter gave theworld Orange Juice and AztecCamera, while fellow Glaswe-gians Altered Images even manag-ed a couple of hit singles. Another

band from this era were hiendsAgain, whose one and onlyPhonogram album, Trapped AndUnwrapped, was recently re-

released by Fontana.It was the under -rated Friends

Again who formed the basis ofLove & Money, whose secondalbum, Strange Kind Of Love,also came out on Fontana.The current line-up is James

Grant (singer/songwriter, guita-

rist), Bobby Paterson (bass) andPaul McGeechan (keyboards).

The LP was produced mainlyin New York by former Steely Danmainman Gary Katz. This ex-plains the LP's jazzy, atmosphericfeel although some tracks wererecorded in Los Angeles with Totodrummer Jeff Porcaro. The wholeset shows a development on thefirst LP, AU You Need Is LoveAnd Money, whose more earthyrock earned them an invitationfrom U2 to open at one of theirstadium gigs.

Love & Money now have asubstantial cult following, playingsellout gigs all over the UK andgaining an increasing amount ofairplay with each single release.

In contrast Texas' career beganlike a dream. Unheard of at thestart of the year, their first single,I Don't Need A Lover, reachedno. 8 in the UK top 40. Thealbum, Southside (Mercury/Phonogram), entered the chart atno. 3, Produced by Tim Palmer(The Mission etc), it has gonegold in the UK, with the rest ofEurope taking sales past the500.000 mark.

Their music is very differentfrom the pop/rock/funk in-fluences which can be detected ina lot of Scottish chart material.Instead Texas have more of acountry base; the heart and soulof their sound being the fine, laid-back voice of Sharleen Spiteri andthe bluesy slide guitar of AlistairMcErlaine.

Wet Wet Wet have enjoyed aneven greater rise to fame and for-tune. This soulful pop group - se-cond only to Bros in the teen.scream stakes - were Britain'sbiggest -selling band in 1988.

Their debut album, Popped InSoured Out (Precious/Phono-gram), has gone platinum four

Like the rhythm section ofJohnny McElhone (bass) and

Stuart Kerr (drums), they are

from the south side of Glasgow,hence the name of their album.Both of the latter have played withLove & Money and Hipsway, whorecently left Phonogram afterreleasing one superb album in1986.

Such changes are indicative ofthe Scottish scene - and its generalin -bred character. For example,Johnny's brother Gerry managesTexas and another Glasgow band,Gun, whose singer Mark Rankinhappens to be Sharleen's cousin.

Gun were formed in 1985 byRankin and guitarist Guiliano

lkken on by GR Manage-ment (which also looks afterTbxas), they were signed to A&MRecords. The band self -producedtheir debut album Dking On TheWorld which is currently no. 51 inthe UK chart. Through extensivetouring, the band have managed

times in the UK and yielded fourtop 10 singles. Wet Wet Wet alsoreached no. 1 with a cover of theBeatles' With A Little Help FromMy Friends.

Memphis and felt quite at homeat the ghetto studio of veteranproducer Willie Mitchell.

Mitchell, who created all the AlGreen hits of the 70s, did not seehis work released until the end of1988 when Phonogram put outThe Memphis Sessions. Insteadthe songs for Popped In SouledOut were re-recorded withMichael Baker (Blow Monkeys), aMore contemporary poptechnician.

So far, 1989 has been quiet forWet Wet Wet. It has mainly beenspent recording their new LP,Holding Back The River. Theywill produce it themselves and it isscheduled for an October release,by which time they hope to havehad a hit with the first single,Sweet Surrender.

Quite a few memories werejogged recently when the nameDel Amitri re-emerged. When theGlasgow scene started gainingmomentum in 1983, I6 -year -old

Justin Currie put together theband's original line-up. An indiesingle and some good openingslots - for The Smiths and TheFall among others - soon attracteda lot of A&R interest. But theband settled for Big Star, the Indicdivision of Chrysalis.

Their self -titled album was pro-duced by Hugh Jones to greatcritical acclaim. However person-nel changes at the companyfollowed and Del Amitri were notprepared to accept the demandsof the new regime. A departing

Tom Cunningham (drums) andNeil Mitchell (keyboards) - met atschool in one of the toughestworking class areas of Glasgow.While barely out of their teens,they recorded their first album in

pay-off enabled them to embarkon one of the most audaciousrock & roll ventures - a two -monthtour of the US, supported by theirown fan network.

Fans arranged local gigs, ac-commodation and interviews with

local radio stations and news-papers, with all profits goingtowards petrol. On returning toBritain in September 1987, DelAmitri signed to PolyGram MusicPublishing and just over a yearlater signed to A&M Records. Thenew album, Waking Hours, wasmainly produced by MarkFreegard, with Hugh Jones alsorecording a few tracks.

Another band who have paidtheir dues on the live circuit areThe River Detectives. In 1988, thebasic nucleus of Sam Corry andDan O'Neil played 97 shows inUK clubs, occasionally appearing

-piece.

Both Corry and O'Neil startedout in rival bands in Motherwell,the steel centre of Scotland. Afterrealising that they wowld be betteroff combining their talents, theyspent the next year writing andsinging "loud songs" together.These included their July singleChains (WEA), so far their onlyrelease Like all their repertoire, itwas written for acoustic guitars.But with the rest of the bandbehind them, they become moreof a rock & roll outfit.

Not surprisingly, The RiverDetectives' debut album, Satur-day Night Sunday Morning -narned after a 60s cult book andfdm about life in a steel town -shows a mixture of electric andacoustic songs, many of whichlyrically reflect the industriallandscape in which they grew up.

His Latest Flame, who arenamed after an Elvis Costellosong, occupy a unique area inScottish pop history. With the a-ception of Strawbeny Swit-chblade - who were a vocal duo -they are the country's first fully.female outfit.

The group includes Biers Reid(guitar and vocals), Irene Brown(guitar and vocals), Moira Rankin(lead vocals), Jaqueline Bradley(drums) and Laura Mazzolini@ass and vocals). In 1986 they

joined Go! Discs, released twosingles and toured extensivelywith labelmates The Housemar-tins.

For Iwo years their career wenton hold until 1988, when the girlsarranged a comeback gig. On thestrength of their songs a deal withLondon Records followed and asingle, Londonderry Road, hasjust been released. It will appearon their debut album, In TheNeighbourhood, which has beenproduced by Owen Davies andBobby Henry.

Live, His Latest Flame play asimilar jangly guitar pop to TheBangles but the subject matter oftheir lyrics tends to be heavier.Closer listening also reveals souland country influences as well aspop, which all leads to the

possibility of the band happeningthis time round.

found themselves touring withflavour -of -the -year TransvisionVamp, The band began, to take

shape when singer/songwriterJames Stewart lured guitaristCallum McNair from a rivaloutfit.

They recorded a single, TheGolden Key, on an indie label.The title proved to be very ap-propriate - it unlocked record in-dustry interest and led to a dealwith EMI.

Having recruited James Heron(bass) and Peter Haggerty(drums) for live work, they beganlooking fora producer. A long listof candidates proved either un-suitable or incompatible, so theduo decided to producethemselves. The result was theJane single, Baby's Gone, whichwill be followed soon by an albumentitled Keep.

Another band who have beenon the verge of a breakthrough fora while are The Silencers. Foun-ding members Jimme O'Neill(guitar/vocals) and Cha Bums

(guitars) made their debut albumback in 1979 when they were in aVirgin -signed band called Finger -

Low d Mop, -sellout gigs all al.sin years later and signed toRCA/BMG in 1986. A promisingdebut single, the critically -acclaimed Painted Word, wasfollowed by dates in Holland anda two -month UK and Europeantour with The Pretenders. TheSilencers also played a stadium

date with the latter in Cardiff; theother bands on the bill being TheAlarm and U2.

Their first album, Letter FromSt Paul, eventually sold 100.000copies. This was mainly due to alengthy club tour of the US, whichhelped them gain airplay on FMas well as college radio. A secondUS tour saw The Silencers sup-porting Squeeze while also doingsome dates of their own inCanada.

Further tours of the UK andEurope with The Alarm inJanuary 1989 prefaced the releaseof the second album the followingmonth. Called A Blues For Bud-dha, it gives the impression that itwill not be long before TheSilencers - who share manage-ment with Simple Minds - breakinto the big league.

Another new signing to theEMI camp are Horse. But do notbe surprised to see them supportThe Cult on their next UK orEuropean tour. The Cult'svocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist

Billy Duffy were impressed whenthey caught them at The Marquee.When they last saw a band there -and asked them to open for TheCull - it was the first UK gig byGuns N' Roses.

Horse is also the name of theband's charismatic Glaswegiansinger. He and guitarist AngelaMcAlinden secured a deal withSBK Songs in May 1986. Thisenabled them to put together aband: Graham Brierton (bass),George Hutchinson (guitar), TonySoave (drums) and Man Hum-breck (keyboards).

Record company interest wasslow until Home made an ap-pearance on the former UK TVpop show 'The Tube' in spring1987. By the following autumnthey had signed to Capitol and inJanuary this year they releasedtheir first single, You Can BeForgiven. It was produced by PeteSmith, who is now producing therest of Horse's debut album.

Last but not least are a fineEdinburgh rock band with thepotential to be a world class act.Goodbye Mr Mackenrse signed toCapitol in 1986, but their first twosingles - The Rattler and Face ToFace - were released independent-

ly, creating a strong buzz in mediacircles.

The line-up then was MartinMetcalfe (vocals), Kelly (drums),Fin (bass), Shirley and Rona(both keyboards/vocals). Afterreleasing their first self -titledsingle for Capitol, they touredwith Aztec Camera. They werejoined by. Big John, previously amember of The Exploited andBlooduncles, who has an un-forgettable presence onstage

The subsequent re-release ofThe Rattler gave Goodbye MrMackenzie their first top 40 hit. Itwas followed in April this year bythe release of their debut album,Good Deeds And Dirty Rags,which has sold steadily and pro-vided the band with a dedicatedfollowing. Meanwhile they haveparted company with Capitol andare now shopping around for anew deal.

Some ofmy friends who work in indepen-dent shops reckon heavy metal isvery big at the moment, as is Hi-NRG, which for some reason hasalways been very big in Scotland -

Watch out for Dente Hombres Solos by LosInhumanos. The record was released last yearand up until June had sold a fairly respectablebut unspectacular 85.000 copies.
