We are now halfway through the present term. It has been busy times so far and the Club has achieved a very positive financial performance to date.

By the time you read this message, the 71st edition of the SCC International Rugby7s tournament would have started. Not only does this event host many prestigious international teams converging on the Padang field to compete for glory, its other side tournaments – including the Corporate Touch and Youth tournament – bring different groups together for one common love of sport, and the SCC should be proud that it is able to be an advocate of this not just on this island-city, but beyond its shores too.

The Clubhouse was also abuzz with activity recently when we jumped right into a full weekend of partying with the SCC Night Race 2018. Members and guests alike got to experience the exciting circuit action live right beside the track while feasting on scrumptious buffet spreads, fuelling themselves from packed bars, and enjoying the many fringe activities. Thanks to your strong participation, the Club’s performance was higher not only over the last edition, but was also one of the best ever.

As part of this drive to always improve our service and Member experience, the Club recently underwent a major renovation of its Oval Kitchen so we can be better equipped with a more efficient, clean and safe facility to serve you even better.

Due to the impact on our cooking capabilities during those two weeks, the F&B Department introduced alternative dining options – including lunch buffet spreads and evening hawker fare at The Oval & Verandah and The Courtyard respectively – that became so popular there have been requests to repeat these more regularly! We thank our Members for your patience with us during that period, and our Culinary team is excited to serve you with even more interesting and delicious dishes.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We have also started refurbishment work at the Main Lounge that will see the interior design and furniture updated, lighting improved etc. Please rest assured that normal service will still proceed as per normal as the work will be done after operational hours as we try our best to minimise inconvenience to our Members. We appreciate your kind understanding as we improve our facilities to provide you with an even more comfortable environment.

The work will be completed by 9 December 2018, just in time for our festive celebrations for Christmas and the New Year!

Our F&B and Events Departments have organised and created many merry programs and rich luscious buffets and meals for you to feast on so I hope your tummies are prepared for the onslaught of food! Detailed information is available in our special festive booklet supplement accompanying this issue of The Padang. For Members who are hosting their own private parties outside of the Clubhouse but still want to enjoy SCC quality cuisine, we have the Christmas Take-away Order Form in the booklet too.

Going forward we shall keep investing in improving and uplifting our Club and its facilities.

This festive season, I hope you will enjoy your celebrations at the Singapore Cricket Club with your families and friends. On behalf of the General Committee, I wish you and your loved ones all the joys of the season, and a fantastic start to the New Year!

ANNUAL STAFF FUNDMembers are hereby invited to voluntarily contribute to the SCC Staff ‘Annual Ang Pow Fund’.

It is an SCC “tradition” that this contribution amounts to the equivalent of one month’s subscription and the fund will be fully dispersed in the month January 2019 before the Chinese New Year as an ex-gratia payment that is equally distributed amongst all members of staff. This is the only occasion in the year when Members may show their appreciation to the Club’s employees.

In keeping with recent practice, the amount will be debited from Members’ accounts and will be reflected in the October 2018 Statement of Account.

This contribution as previously stated is wholly voluntary Members may give written notice prior to 31 December 2018 should they choose to make a smaller, larger or no contribution at all. We would also be pleased to accept an email notification to [email protected], as to your choice of option.

On behalf of all SCC’s employees, the Management would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patronage and support of the Club and its staff over this past year.

SCC TAGLINE COMPETITIONThe Club held a tagline competition for Members

to express what the Club meant to them in a tagline. Following that, the top five taglines were shortlisted and Members also voted for their favourite tagline.

The winner for the Lucky Draw was Mr Bryan Lim Chin Yaw, who won a $50 SCC F&B

voucher for voting the winning tagline.

Christmas and New Year festivities are just around the corner! Here’s some style tips on how you can suit up so you’ll look effortlessly dashing for the season (and not end up being tacky!)

The Bespoke Club - premium destination of gentlemen from around the world in search of the perfectly bespoke tailored suit!

At The Bespoke Club you can order party suits, tuxedos, dinner jackets & vests for special occasions from elegant fabrics such as Velvet, Silk & Brocades.

To get your perfectly tailored bespoke suits and personal styling tips, visit thebespokeclub.sg for information about its Suntec City location and appointment bookings

LIFE IS A PARTY!

Classic yet always stylish: The TuxNever will this classic number come in last on the league! A good black tuxedo is the easiest to play around with, for that accessories fanatic you are.

Start with a contrasting bow tie or go simpler with interesting shirt studs and you’re ready to go! Try not to shy away from those glossy tuxedo shoes though – to complete your perfect look.

Choose fabrics That Scream LuxeThe easiest way to ace the suit game at a party is to choose a fabric that catches the right amount of attention.

A cocktail party favourite would be velvet - apart from its exotic touch, the subtle sheen as cross paths with different light rays are mesmerizing.

Baroque on the other hand, brings out the artisan in you. The classic embossed prints are prized motifs in the Victorian era and has never faded out of fashion throughout the years.

Be Your Own FashionistaBe it colour blocking, oversized fit or that crazy neon colour, it’s all about having fun at a party right!

Express yourself with colours that contrast yet complement each other and get ready to draw the curtains with minimal accessories.

While ladies dominated the oversized scene, take a cue from recent fashion shows and see how the wide-leg trouser combination is in trend again.

Of course, if these won’t be enough for that daring soul of yours, show up in neon and be sure that you’d be noticed even when the sky gets dark.

Craving for a hot comforting bowl of Kambing Soup?

Look out for it in Chef Arfin’s Friday Specials at the Oval & Verandah!

Want to be able to cook the dish yourself at home?

This recipe is listed on pg 9 of the SCC Cookbook.

The SCC Cookbook is available for purchase at the Souvenir Shop in front of the Members Services Desk.

Kambing Soup

No stranger to the Indian culinary scene, The Padang spoke to Celebrity Chef Arfin on his journey in shaping the Indian Kitchen for the Club!

MEET SCC’S CELEBRITY CHEF!

How did your interest in cooking come about?I was 9 years old when my interest in cooking came about; I was watching my friend’s father make a prata at his prata shop. At that time, because I was so young, nobody wanted to teach me how to make them so I used to observe how he made the prata and started practising at home on my own till I got it right. It was then I realized that I enjoyed cooking and that passion led me to my first dish, Pomfret fish curry, a recipe I got from my father.

Tell us about your journey as a Chef with SCC.The Club did not have an Indian kitchen when I first joined SCC. I wanted Members to look forward to the Club’s special recipes and the best way was to get Members’ feedback whenever they dined at The Club. Over the years, I am happy to say that we now have a good Indian kitchen and have established an Indian menu, which is a popular choice amongst Members. We also have a weekly Chef Arfin Specials, where Members get to try some of my signature dishes. The networking with Members was probably effective because today, I get Members asking me “When is the next specials?”, a positive sign for me.

You are the co-author of the SCC Cookbook. Which is your favourite recipe? The SCC Cookbook has some of the Club’s signature recipes. My personal favourite will be the Kambing Soup, which is also a favourite amongst Members today.

You take a lot of care in using healthier ingredients in your cooking. Why is that important to you?Generally, Indian recipes rely heavily on sweet and savory ingredients, which can be unhealthy for us in the long run.

So, I try to use lesser salt and adopt healthier cooking methods to preserve the nutrients in my ingredients. I want to make sure that my recipes will enable others to not only enjoy good food but also have a healthier lifestyle.

Deepavali is around the corner; what is your favourite dish to cook for the festival and why?Honestly, it is difficult to name one because the Indian cuisine has a wide spread. Usually, during Deepavali, depending on which Indian state the family originates from, people celebrate the festivity with dishes peculiar to that state. This year, I will be doing something spectacular for Deepavali in SCC. If you want to find out what it will be, you have to come for the event on 23 November!

It was an adrenaline-pumping weekend during the annual SCC Night Race held from 14 to 16 September 2018.

Members and guests converged on the Clubhouse to watch the racing action on the Marina Bay Street Circuit – both besides the track itself and on big screens placed around the Club so Members and guests could catch all the highlights of the 2018 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix.

The weekend was filled with food, drinks, and entertainment – from extensive buffet spreads to fun fringe activities such as the roving LED Stilt Walker, photo-taking opportunities with our “Lewis Hamilton”

2018SCC NIGHT RACESCC NIGHT RACEimpersonator and UV-spot glow-in-the-dark tattooing. Members and guests also tried their hand at being a race driver in the race car stimulator, cheered on by our SCC Lion mascot who also hung out with the crowd.

The weekend ended on a high note with a spectacular firework display that marked the end of the race while they continued to enjoy entertainment highlights by renowned artists.

Thank you to all our Members and guests for coming and making the SCC Night Race weekend a great success! See you again next year!

In Conversation with Nanthini and Ranjini Visvalingam

It was a solemn affair as Members got together in the early hours of 12 October 2018 for the memorial dawn service to commemorate the eight Members of the SCC Rugby Section, who had lost their lives in the tragic bombing of the ill-fated Paddy’s Bar in Kuta, Bali on 12 October 2002.

Christopher Kays, Timothy Arnold, Neil Bowler, Christopher Bradford, David Kent, Peter Record, Christopher Redman and Charlie Van Rennen were on the annual Rugby 10s tour at the time of the attacks and this year marks the 16th Anniversary of the calamity.

The memorial service was attended by Members of the Rugby Section, Members of the other sports sections, attendees from other clubs around the region and Members of the General Committee. The SCC remembers and pays tribute to the lives lost on that fateful day.

NOV / DEC 2018 THE PADANG 27

How did your interest in sports start? We started being interested in sports from young because both our father and mother played sports – taekwondo and table tennis respectively. When I (Nanthini) was 8 years old, I was involved in an accident which prevented me from playing any sports for 2 years. This incident made me more determined about joining a sport and I decided to take up Netball.

What are some of your best memories in Netball? The best memory for the both of us would be winning the Division 3 Championship for the first time and The Padang Shield in 2016. 2016 was a great year for the Netball team.

Nanthini, you have started out as a Junior Sports Member and today you are an Ordinary Member. Could you share with us on your journey?I started out playing with the Club at a young age and therefore transiting to become an Ordinary Member seemed like the natural thing to do. The great thing is that we have more opportunities in terms of steering leadership and also more responsibility within the Section.

How has playing together in the same Club and sport strengthened your bond with each other? Both of us have been doing things together since we were young but because we belong to different age groups, we never really got to play together in school.

SCC gave us the opportunity to play together in the same team and that is definitely something which brings us closer together as we also get to mix within the same social circle.

You are both known to be very committed to playing and training. What drives that sporting passion? We are very competitive people by nature so this drives us to be committed to play and train hard. Not only that, SCC also gave us the opportunity to meet new people, which helped to expand our social circle.

This year, Ranjini, you were awarded the Sports Girl of the Year award, and Nanthini, you were lauded for the Spirit of Sport (Netball). How has that motivated you?The award for us was the icing on the cake. It was an honour to the passion we have for the sport. There is no 80% effort when it comes to us. It goes all the way to 100% because ultimately, it is the result that awaits us at the end of the road.

What are some of your favorite things to do in the Club when you are not playing Netball?Ranjini: I enjoy the Club’s food as well as the ambience in the Stumps bar along with some drinks and friends when I am not playing Netball.

Nanthini: I enjoy trying out the different sports in SCC as well as the benefits of Reciprocal Clubs when I am travelling overseas.

Meet the dynamic Netball Duo; Nanthini and Ranjini Visvalingam! One is the Netball convenor, and the other was awarded the Sports Girl of the Year 2018,

and together, the sisters share about their passion for sports and their time at SCC.

SCC Annual Golf Championship 20182 October 2018

This is “the” SCC Annual Golf Championship that will be remembered for a very long time in more ways than one. It was a brilliant manifestation of our hallowed SCC Culture and Spirit of Sport in real time action.

RECOGNITION & APPRECIATION

The Golf Section wishes to recognize and express our sincere appreciation to the SCC Sports Department, the Food & Beverage Team and MARCOM for their professional administration, logistics and operational support, especially given the pressure cooker timeframe they worked under.

Words pale against the montage of snappy photographs which eloquently paint the beautiful golf day which was enjoyed by 120 golfers, followed by Dinner and Prize Giving at the Padang Restaurant. Enjoy the photographs.

UPCOMING EVENTS• Balut Section Annual Christmas Party: Saturday, 10 November, 12:00hrs - 17:30hrs.• The Padang Shield: To be hosted by SRC on Saturday, 17 November • In-house: Tuesday, 20 November• 38th Chivas Regal Interport Challenge Trophy: Hosted by SRC on Friday/Saturday, 23/24 November• Indian Association Christmas Party: Wednesday, 19 December

IN-HOUSE BALUT GAMESThe Balut Section had two in-house games in September. The first, on Saturday 8th September, was won by Padmini Parukar with 846 points, followed closely by Penny Bligh with 841. Huned won third place with 834 points. Yasmin Gaffoor had the highest individual column with 158 points, leaving Sunita to collect the Chivas miniature with the lowest individual aggregate of the day – 616 points. An unusual feature of this gathering was that we managed to ‘pack in’ eight rounds of Balut instead of the usual six. Tuesday 11th September witnessed another in-house event. Securing the coveted bottle of Chivas by a mere point over Sunita with 641 points was Rolv Stokkmo. Yasmin came in a creditable 3rd with 626 points, and Ollie Andersen achieved the highest individual total in one column of 145 points. As if trying to start a family tradition, Soma, with 508 points, scooped up the miniature Scotch bottle (her brother Suresh also achieved lowest individual aggregate a couple of months ago – and the mini Chivas prize!)

SARAWAK CLUB, KUCHING, 4TH INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENTThe SCC sent a team of 12 players to Kuching on 31st August for the Sarawak Club 4th Invitational Inter-Club Competition 2018. The competition commenced on Saturday 1st September with most of the 70+ players a little worse for wear due to the legendary hospitality offered. The competition consisted of eight rounds of Balut. SCC entered four teams, and came out on top thanks to the combined efforts of Raj Kumar, John Taylor, Else and Rolv Stokkmo who amassed a total of 3,176 points, just edging out Olivia Chan’s team by 88 points. Raj again showed he is not just a pretty face by getting the highest individual total of 884 points, closely followed by TKC’s Suffian Abdullah with 875 points. John and Raj also had the highest “pairs” total of the tournament with the combined total of 1,664 points besting Siti Nuraini Binti S Mohammed and Siti Raudah Binti S Mohammed by 33 points! Well done SCC - a virtual clean sweep!

NATIONAL TRIPLES 2018The highly fancied team of Euan Wong, Melvin Tan and Wong Hui Kai teamed up to try and capture SCC’s first team Gold medal in the National Tournaments this year. However, their unbeaten run in the preliminary stages and the semi-finals came to an agonising halt in the finals when they fell short to Tanglin Club’s Rodger Kimpton, Bernard Foo and Bob Gattie.

Our female teams of Shermeen Lim, Chng Ming Li and Candy Lai, and Amira Goh, Josephine Lim and Mary Lim, were unable to repeat SCC’s 1-2 performance last year and bowed out in the group stages. The ladies tournament was won by Singtel’s May Lee, Margaret Lim and Jane Low.

SCC DRAWN PAIRS 2018The SCC Drawn Pairs that concluded earlier this year saw 14 teams vying for the trophy. 28 bowlers signed up and teams were formed by picking names from a hat. The first round of games saw winners move into the Cup Section of the draw and the losers competing for the Plate trophy. From then on, it was a knock-out format.

It was a good mix up of teams and the Cup trophy was eventually won by Mary Lim and T Velu, who defeated Rosemary Tessensohn and George Abraham in the finals. The plate trophy was captured by Melvin Tan and Tony Richardson, who defeated KC Chew and Yong Lew Foong in the finals. Congratulations to all winners!

SCC FRIENDLY GAME AGAINST TEAM SEREMBANOur friends from Seremban, Malaysia, paid us a visit in September for a friendly game. We had visited their green for a friendly match last December during our Section tour to Kuala Lumpur.

It was great for our players to play against a team of experienced bowlers from Kelab Boling Padang Warga Emas Seremban. The visitors picked up the line and pace of our green fairly quickly and gave us a good challenge. Six rinks of triples were played and after the first half of the game, the scores were looking quite ominous. The rain past the half-way mark did not dampen spirits or spoil the game. In fact, it rather lifted the team and it was an inspiration to see our players have the passion to continue to play in the rain, and the will to plod on and overtake to win 6-0 eventually.

Thank you to all the players who played, and to the supporters who came down to cheer, and to all who had a part to play to make it a great afternoon and evening. The earlier rain paved the way for a pleasant dinner session at the Courtyard.

POT GAMES MATCH VS TANGLIN CLUBIn the previous ten editions of the Pot Games since Bowls was included, SCC has won the Bowls match 8 times, dropping it only in 2012 and a tie in 2015. How-ever, it is never easy for our SCC bowlers to play at the Tanglin Club as their green is very much different from ours. This year’s format was two bowls triples, played

on five rinks. As predicted, the scores were very close, thanks to some inspired bowling by our opponents. Mary and Euan’s rinks succumbed to defeats, but thanks to strong victories on Rosemary, Melvin and Matthew’s rinks, we managed to come out victorious 3-2 to help SCC in gaining a point towards winning the overall Pot Trophy. Our Bowls Convenor, Christian Huang, accepted the Bowls trophy on behalf of the Section at the dinner function the following week.

SCC FUN DAY AND BOWLS COACHINGEarlier in June, SCC organised a Fun Day where Members could bring their family or guests to participate in various activities at the club. The Bowls Section jumped on the bandwagon and included Bowls as an activity. The session was well attended and through that, we managed to boost our Section numbers by a little.

Coupled with some other new bowlers who had joined the Section earlier this year, we thought it would be a good opportunity to run a short coaching course to fa-miliarise these new bowlers about the sport of bowls. They were ably guided by coach Rodger Kimpton on the theoretical and practical aspects of the sport. We look forward to seeing them on one or our playing days to further hone their skills with our seasoned bowlers.

COSMO – THE COSMOPOLITAN LEAGUE STILL GOING STRONG FROM AN SCC PERSPECTIVE

Some 43 years ago in 1975 – that’s a full decade before the first MRT station in Sin-gapore was complet-ed – two members of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Soccer Section started the legendary Cosmopol-itan Football League, or Cosmo league, as the founding fathers, which is still going

strong today as a well-organized, respected and compet-itive Soccer League with its own sparkle.

In the search for an appropriate name for the League that would reflect the make-up of the participating teams and players, names such as “European Cup”, “Singapore Cup”, “Caucasians Trophy”, and “Off-Season Cup” became close contenders, but the Founding Fathers opted for “Cosmopolitan League” as a fitting name, with the ‘cos-mopolitan’ flavour of the league stemming from the par-ticipating teams that organized themselves by nationality.

The concept of Cosmo league, or Cosmo as it is affection-ately known, is aimed at providing friendly ‘formal’ soccer to expatriate players who are keen to play but were not necessarily members of clubs or organizations. As the League’s website www.cosmoleague.com conveys, Cos-mo league is “all about a diverse group of people with a common interest, coming together not for profit but for camaraderie, to pursue their passion and compete. Its either that, or they want an excuse to get out of the house on a Saturday afternoon.”

At its onset, from the SCCs’ perspective the Cosmopolitan League filled an off-season ‘gap’ that was left by the de-parted British Forces who had provided regular Saturday afternoon soccer for many of the SCC’s section players throughout the 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. In fact, many of the League’s games were played at some of the old playing fields that the Forces had previously used. The team now has its own home ground at Dempsey Fields, an SCC establishment, with a structured and profession-al approach to match-days.

The League’s initial teams comprising the very first “league” in 1975 included the Club’s 1st XI, the Scandina-vian Society ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, a German XI, UWC/ISI, an SCC 2nd XI, a Swiss Club side, and a Dutch Club side, sponsored by The East Asiatic Company, an old and es-tablished trading house in Singapore. The SCC was in

part included in the League to help grow its size and en-able more games for other participants, and of course since Cosmo was largely an SCC ‘brainchild’.

The League grew in size over its early years but has al-ways remained a friendly organization with its ups-and-downs as talented and committed individuals came and went. Depending on who ‘ran the League to a large extent determined how successful it was in any one year.According to Urs Brutsch, who arrived to Singapore in 1986 and plays with the recently amalgamated German/Swiss FC, “the Cosmo league of 1986 has little in com-mon with the League today. In 1986 the League was not as well organized, and more often than not either one of the teams or the referee - or both - were missing!” This had long been one of the League’s ‘charms’ over its 43 years of existence.

Urs believes that the League has come a long way from a casual League to a well-organized and competitive oper-ation today. There are now 11 regular teams participating each year, three officials for every game, and the quality of football is arguably much better today than it was a decade or two ago. A regular and well-organized Com-mittee sets the competition rules, and organizes all fix-tures, pitches and referees for all games. The Committee, currently led by President Graham Dickson, promotes the League through its website www.cosmoleague.com.

The winners of the Cosmo league’s inaugural match were none other than the SCC’s talented players of the SCC 1st XI, which marked an auspicious start and a feat that the SCC have repeated many more times: in 1983 when the Padantiques team also finished in third spot; in 2002 with a side managed by Graham Dickson and captained by Keith Pope; in the 2003/04 season with a side man-aged by Phil Cockerill and Graham Dickson and cap-tained by Kieran Angellini Hurll and James Whiteley; and for the majority of the seasons from 2008 to 2018 led by Owen Monaghan and more recently Anthony Houlahan. Casuals, Hotspurs and more recently TGA Rangers have enjoyed league champion status.

After the first title win in 1983 the SCC team was with-drawn from the League as it was regarded as too strong a side at the time, and it was felt that a ‘selection’ of second and third team players should be given the opportunity to represent the SCC. Later on, the SCC Padantiques team was also invited to join, who had had a particularly good side in the late 1970's and early 1980’s. The 1st XI was in-vited back again some years later once the Casuals and British Hotspurs started to dominate the Cosmo league.

In 2000, Graham took over the Cosmo side of the SCC,

Graham Dickson - Cosmoleage President

successfully driving its rise from a bottom-three side and recruiting additional quality players. Incidentally Graham could not comprehend why the SCC was near the bottom of the Cosmo league yet had a Thursday night first team full of quality SCC players and members who played against the SCC in the Cosmo league games. This had to be changed - and it was. Keith Pope, an excellent player who is being sorely missed by the SCC, made significant contributions to both title successes by scoring 29 goals during the 2001/02 season and 25 goals in the 2003/04 season. Kieran Angellini-Hurll, James Whiteley and Mi-chael Drake made key contributions to the SCC as part of the Cosmo league. Ray Lee also made a significant contribution both as a player and captain during this time.In 2004/05, with Graham as Manager and James White-ley as captain, the team were League Runners-Up and won the coveted Cosmopolitan Cup Final beating Brew-erkz 2-1 with goals from Keong and Kieran.

Michael Drake and Graham managed the team for the 2005/06 season and led the side to League Runners-Up and another Cosmopolitan Cup Final success with 2-0 over Pulau Ubin, sporting goals from Tyler Drake and Mike Byrne.

The SCC came second again in 2006/07 with the title go-ing down to the very last match. While missing the title in the Final game was a disappointment, the commitment of the squad that had suffered injuries and absences during the run-in was truly commendable.

The season 2007/08 saw the SCC once more finish as runners-up in the League, but it did proudly win the Cos-mopolitan Cup Final 4-0 v Hotspurs on the Padang. This also saw the start of Owen “Benitez” Monaghan’s reign as coach, who had done a superb job for the SCC run-ning both Cosmo and NFL teams. As part of his stint he recruited a substantial cadre of quality players such as Steve Angelov, Adam Bowden, Danny Townsend, Scott Anderson, JP Mccarvel, JP Bruneau, Steve Rogers, An-drew Hutcheon, Dom Lane, Henry Turner, Martin Goe-rojo, Marcus Davies, Kian-Ann Ong, Rob Gulston, Azran Yossi, Barry Teasedale, Neil Pedley, Shyam Young, Si-mon Wilson, David Alonso, Scott Wells, Mehdi Souiade, Simon Tan, Nahar Daud, Kim Leng Tan, Tommy Smith and JD Donovan. Some of these players have moved on, with best wishes for their personal and soccer ventures.

The SCC has recently had a trailblazing series of sea-sons, winning the Cosmopolitan League and Cup Dou-ble in most of the past ten years with the exception of the league 2 years ago which was won by an excellent TGA Rangers. Several teams have been on the receiv-ing end of a few thrashings in Cup Finals in recent years too. This reflects superb efforts by coach Monaghan and sides captained by Adam Bowden and Scott Starr as-sisted by David Alonso, and outstanding performance by the SCC players including coach Hutcheon who is a key member of the squad. Some of the players mentioned above remain, with quality additions including James Kil-bee, Jamie Saarloos, John Norfolk, John Spackmann, A J Cyrile, Heiko Moeller, Matt Sutton, Anthony Moulin, Naoto, Josh Douglas, Greg Walasek, Neil Kee, Martin Rigby, Richard Pugh, Ronnie Smollett, Matt Zatto, Matt Hulen, Phil Mace, Dary Stone, Jahan Rezai, Ross Greg-ory, Christopher Day, Sam Balls, Dan Hammond, Duncan McDonald, Dan Huke, Ross Logie, Ross Preston, Matt Hulen, Tim Walter, Ross Plain, Liam Shotton, Ben King, Amos Boon, Alex Duric, Kike, Dom O’Shea, Dom Lane, Martin Lavoo, Dan Rowlands, Anthony Garreau, Jack Cullinane, Matt Zatto, Mike Hemingway and Chris Day.

Graham has continued to support the team over the past years and developed a bond with the Managers of the SCC Firsts which has been mutually satisfying. He con-tinues to play a role similar to an Ian Fleming mystery novel no pun intended. He remembers fondly picking up the team kit and transporting all around the island, wash-ing kit on some occasions and getting players to games in his car but those were the fun days. He remembers signing two players he saw playing on the beach in Sen-tosa as SCC were short on the day. He regularly had connections on new players and always wanted a strong-er side season by season.

As part of its continued support of the expatriate com-munity in Singapore, the SCC is proud of both being a founding member of the Cosmo league and for having participated in it since its conception in 1975. The SCC remains committed to the continued development of the Cosmopolitan League and to expatriate football in Sin-gapore. And if past performance is anything to go by, the SCC and the Cosmo league will still be going strong for at least another 43 years …

And in other news…In their final game before becoming the SCC 2nds, the Strollers won the Equatorial League Plate in a 3-2 victory against the Rampant Casuals. Goals from Mike Hemingway, Leon and Yasin helped secure a deserved win.

Following on from their cup success, the subsequent merger of the Strollers and Tigers – driven by the ener-gy and dedication of Bruce Loggie and Mo Yasin - has rejuvenated the competitive landscape of the Section’s weekend football. Providing both a feeder team for the 1sts, as well as re-energised and committed squad consisting of both promising rookies and experienced

hands, Bruce and Mo 2nds deserve huge credit. Hav-ing begun the season well, the future looks bright for the newest addition to the Section.

Hockey Convenor: Intekhab Khan | Article by: Kanan Packrisamy

SPORTS

Deep into the Singapore Hockey Federation Nation-al Hockey League 4, our 3rd XI Men are staying afloat amongst a group of six teams separated by just 3-points. With three rounds of games remaining, this league is truly going down to the wire.

Many in the hockey circle never gave SCC a second look after they started the season with three straight de-feats. It’s ironic that in each of these games SCC took the lead. The first game in which they didn’t score first they managed to get a point out of a 1-1 draw with NTU.

The squad was thin at the start of the season as many had travelled during the summer. When the future stars (SCC’s youth development programme) returned to the squad and helped them claim their first point, things were looking up. Nonetheless, it was another game that SCC should have won.

As we couldn’t win for some reasons, some things were changed at training. Trainings now started with a mini fitness regimen. Followed by drills which required constant running/movement and activity. Energy! Ener-gy! Energy! If you don’t have enough you are not going to make it to the end of the training, if players got too much, they were asked to channel it to their performance at training outcomes.

With attendance at training tied to getting selected for the remaining 10 games in this challenging season, numbers started to rise from 8 to 10 to the usual fare of 16 these days. We shifted focus away from the result of games to our performance as a team at each game. Taking one game at a time the wins started rolling in… four on the

trot including a heart-stopping last minute winner against the Dutch. This fine run which took us to the top of the league table was halted by an exciting 2-2 draw with new look Dutch team. Then a last grasp 2-1 win over the talented Balestier Lions kept us in the top three.

However a polished professional annihilation of SIA by 12-0 and a comprehensive 3-0 win over title rivals Eagles has propelled us back to the top with just 2 games |remaining to play. If we win these last 2 games we could be champions! A remarkable turnaround of a team that were struggling in this very league last season.

The key difference is training and the impeccable attitude of the squad members that has made this transition possible. We may not win the league but we sure as hell are going to be there or thereabouts.

In the meantime, our Ladies 1s retained their Women’s Liga title with a fine 7-0 drubbing of Eunoia Junior College. The latest win was the ladies’ 9th on the bounce which helped to derail the otherwise steady Hockey Innovative team’s run to the title. The Ladies too have been training in large numbers and their sharpness showed as we scored an average of 4.1 goals a game and conceded a paltry 0.6. The win led to a mini celebration, with many more to come!

The Section also socialised plenty these past few months by playing in the InterSection Football, Quiz, Darts and Lawn Bowls. With the pitch closed and likely to be reopened soon, more hockey socials will be held on the Padang, made merrier with food and drinks at the Clubhouse of course

It’s been a busy few months of new and exciting ventures, on and off-court.

OFF SEASON TRAININGAs most netballers will attest, the game is tough and challenging on our bodies. Yoga is a great active recov-ery session for the girls and takes the physical impact on our bodies down a notch. Due to F1 preparations, a session hosted at Yogamala studio was open to all Club Members, and a great way to get bendy. For those who’d never done yoga before, it was quite an eye-opener. Sub-sequent sessions will be hosted at the Club.

Following the same theory, and simultaneously beating the heat, SCC Netball headed to the Chinese Swimming Club for Hydrofit. Balance and core strength are required to succeed in both netball and Hydrofit exercises, so it was ideal for the team! A few tumbles into the water kept us amused for the hour-long workout, as did the views!

The upcoming agility and Barre workshops promise to up the intensity of our off-season cross-training.

END OF SEASON LEAGUETwo teams from SCC have been entered into the end of season league, fantastically organised by Nanthini Vi-knesh. The league aims to provide new members with plenty of playing opportunity. Hawks and Eagles, at the

time of writing, had some great games with mixed results, but equally hard fought matches. More games to follow, with all matches being played on our home courts on Wednesday evenings.

Our new partner, Luge Sentosa, will be supplying prizes to our weekly “Player of The Match” nominees, as sug-gested by our wonderful section captain Carol Hartopp Hall (pick me!), adding a little extra adrenaline rush to each game.

JSM CARNIVALSet for the 10th November, the JSM carnival is an annu-al netball tournament, featuring a minimum of 15 teams from all over Singapore. The day-long event increases both SCC’s and SCC Netball’s visibility in the community and allows for further opportunity for girls U17 to be ex-posed to the beautiful game!

SOCIAL EVENTSFor a different kind of workout, the SCC Netball quiz night is on November 17, and is an opportunity to flex our brains. With proceeds going to a worthy cause, we hope to see high attendance. Also coming up in November is the latest instalment of the aptly named Friday nights’ “Gym and Gin”, Thursday nights’ “Books & Bevvies” and plenty more to look forward to.

In recent years the SCC Nomads have had the privilege of playing a number of navy ships visiting Singapore but the intense training regime enforced by Captain Adam Waise normally see the SCC Nomads looking to put cricket scores on hapless opponents.

Playing HMS Albion, one of the Royal Navy’s largest ship with a contingent of marines on board is a different beast entirely. While the SCC team spent their Tuesday after-noon lunching, litigating or broking something in smart air conditioned offices, the Sailors and Marines of HMS Albion were (probably) in the gym lifting weights, carbo loading and reviewing plans of attack with a sole focus on winning the Challenge Cup, first presented to the SCC by the Navy in 1887.

Despite UK Navy cuts, the HMS Albion were sporting new-looking kit which highlights the importance they attached to this match.

The games got off to a physical start with SCC’s own Rear Admiral, David ‘Griffo’ Griffiths dictating territory with his boot. HMS Albion were content to run from deep ear-ly, with wingers who clearly enjoyed the relative space after months being confined within a steel hull. Both teams relished the physicality of the game; SCC having

had so long off and the Marines, because, well they are Marines.

The physical nature of the game led to an Albion yellow card for a high tackle with Griffo getting the score board moving.

The SCC made the most of the man advantage with a series of rolling mauls moving towards the opponent’s line before the highly decorated Tankards captain Shane Dewar used all his strength and tactical nous to pile over from about 15cm.

HMS ALBION PULL RANK ON SCC NOMADSBryan Lim finds himself manhandled by Alex Howard and the British Navy, while Gambers wisely keeps a safe distance.

Alex Howard’s pre-season regime a relief to the SCC lifter, Adam Waise. Harresh arguable adding less support.

Smiles all round. A great turnout from the SCC and HMS Albion and hopes that the fixture will become more regular.

Albion hit back quickly with their right winger showing immense pace and power to brush off a number of tackles and touch down in the corner. The Albion try galvanised the SCC though, and after a deep kick from fly-half Griffo, SCCs own fighting man Alex Smith caught the Albion fullback unaware and in his own twenty two. After successfully turning the ball over he put centre Ben Turner in space to dive over the line in the corner.

The second half started with sustained pressure from Albion. The SCC were penalised harshly for a number of apparent infringements which Jon Leow politely communicated to the ref. Perhaps due to fatigue or his gumshield, there appeared to be a misunderstanding and Jon received an inexplicable straight red. With this, the balance of power shifted. More Albion pressure led to another line break and they scored their second try.

With the score line still within one try both team created chances until the dying moments. The SCC made breaks

Mauritian international Charlie Rey finds himself in uncomfortably open pasture

through Turner and McMaster while Albion were only prevented from a final try at the end by Captain Adam Waise whose cover tackle will have been noticed by SCC selectors and UK Defence staff alike.

The game ended 16-20 to Albion. Rarely can you honestly say rugby was the winner but this match and reception was an exception.

FRIENDLY V HOLLANDSE CLUB: 1 SEPT FRIENDLY V BRITISH CLUB: 29 SEPTThe burning question was this: could Tim Howard live up to the high standards set by Nick Cochrane in organizing our friendlies? With two wins from two friendlies, I think Tim has answered that question.

Against the HC we played 18 matches to best of 3 sets. We took an early lead, and even though we lost a few of the last matches we still managed to keep our noses in front winning 10-8. At the dinner afterwards Captain Tim gracefully accepted the Gautam Mukerjee Trophy (formerly The Orange Bowl) to return for safe keeping at SCC for another year.

We played the British Club at SCC and matches started at 2.30pm. We managed to win 9-5 and retain The Ashes Trophy for another year. The afternoon went well and we hosted our visitors to dinner on the Verandah.

Hard on its tail we also hosted the American Club on Sat-urday, 6 October.

JUNIOR TRAINING PROGRAMMESaturday 29 September was a busy day for the Section, with courts being used from 11am – 1pm for our new Junior Training Programme, followed by Allan’s Training for our JSM’s, before we then hosted the British Club.

So while 14 of our finest were doing battle against British Club, another 11 fine players were at the Tanglin Club playing in The Pot Games.

The format this year for The Pot was 4 singles and 4 jumbo doubles matches. The first 3 singles and first two doubles matches went our way with very good wins from Chew Kok Wye and Preshin Manmindar in the first dou-bles that went the full distance of 3 long sets. The in-form and exceptionally speedy Tim Leong and the ex-perienced Kok Tsung Hao outclassed their opponents winning in straight sets in the second doubles match. In singles we had Ashish Jain and Udai Singh both winning comfortably in 3 sets and Elliot Aruldoss getting a walk over in the 3rd set of his match. Once we had these 5 matches in the bag it was all over, with Tanglin winning the final singles and the last two doubles matches.

COSMO LEAGUESince August, Cosmo League has been running with match night on Mondays. We have made a good start and the squad of 36 players is showing lots of enthusi-asm, which makes Tim’s job as Captain a lot easier.

We are the host club this year and will be holding the Gala Dinner for the other six clubs on 7 December and we hope to put on a good show.

TennisThe Tennis Section looks back on a great month of tennis that includes winning the Tanglin Pot game and having the Men’s team in runner-up and Ladies’ team in 2nd runner-up place in the STA Interclub Doubles competition.

TANGLIN CLUB POT GAMES 2018: 1 SEPTThe annual Pot Games against the Tanglin Club (TC) took place at the beautiful TC tennis facility. TC, being the host this year, had the advantage of choosing the category of matches. They proposed 9 matches of men, women and mixed doubles across various age groups.

Big thanks to Vishal Vijay (Men’s Captain) and Rehmat Johal (Ladies Captain) for forming the winning SCC team. After a dramatic day of hard fought matches, the standing was 4:4 and the final men’s open doubles developed into a nail-biting drama. After losing the 1st set 0:6, Andrew Hill and Cameron Chang were fighting hard and turned the game around by winning the 2nd set 7:6 and 3rd set super-tie break 10:8, giving SCC the winning point. The attending SCC crowd went crazy; what a finish!

Thank you to the following players for giving your best and making time for this event:Wee Yoon Chong, Bakul Parikh, Leonardo Tiberi, Saw Weiping, Melissa Pine, Joanna Flint, Avinash Revanur, Darren Wilson, Neil Barrable, Soenke Langhoff, Kevin Cumbers, Nikki Borza, Sher Baljit Singh, Amit Gupta, Andrew Hill, Cameron Chang, Danielle Eng, Clare Cheng.

STA INTERCLUB DOUBLES 2018 SCC Tennis Section sent in 3 Men’s double team (2 teams playing B league and 1 team D) and 1 Ladies’ team (play-ing A league). The Ladies led by the new team captain Rehmat Johal faced a tough season but were able to finish a good 3rd place. The men’s D team fought some good games but finished in the lower half of the rankings. The B league had 3 groups due to the larger number of teams participating. The 2nd B team managed to get 2nd place in their group but missed the semi finals by losing

From left to right: Neil Barrable, Soenke Langhoff, Avinash Revanur, Giacomo Poggi, Baljit Singh and Hayden Kwan. Other team members not in picture are Andrew Hill, Cameron Chang, Romain Lambert, Oliver Helbig, Karun Cariappa, Leonardo Tiberi, Brendan Hendrata, Martin Goerojo.

to the British Club in a tight game. The 1st B team fin-ished top of the group and qualified for the semi-finals which were played on 6th October against Keppel Club. Once again it came down to a super-tie break to decide the winner. Soenke Langhoff and Neil Barrable played the 3rd and final double. After losing the 1st set 3:6, they were able to change their strategy and were rewarded by winning the 2nd set 6:3. Soenke and Neil kept the mo-mentum from the 2nd set and had a great start into 3rd set expanding their lead to 9:2. But now the tides turned and Keppel Club had the upper hand. They starting a catch race, dictating the game and shorten the lead to 9:8 when finally Soenke and Neil made the winning point.

Next day, the final was scheduled at 9am against SICC who easily beat British Club the same day. After SICC it looked to be another close affair. The 1st double lost in straight sets, the 2nd double played by Avinash Revanur and Hayden Kwan had won the 1st set but struggled in 2nd. The decision came in the 3rd super-tie break which they won demonstrating their power game. Once again, the 3rd double had to bring the decision which was played by Soenke and Neil. Winning the 1st set 6:3 gave good optimism but in the end they couldn’t prevent losing the 2nd set 6:7 and the 3rd set super-tie break 6:10. A weekend full of fun and action with the crowning of runner-up for the SCC Men’s Team.
