20th Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year C - 2019 “I have come to bring fire upon the earth…!”
“ I have come to bring fire upon the earth and how I wish it were already kindled. Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” What has happened to good and gentle shepherd that we are so used to. His tone seems to be very fierce and aggressive in his exhortation. But is it not more of an impassioned and dedicated teacher who would not water down the cost of discipleship? After all, is he not the prophet who speaks the Word of God even when it hurts? Is He not the Christ, who spoke the truth and had to suffer the con-sequence for doing so? Yes, he would not have ended up on the cross if he kept quiet and tried to be less challenging and confronting in his ways. But then, he would have to compromise the values of the Kingdom of God. And as it is true for Jesus, so it is also for us. We probably wish a more se-rene and conflict-free life, but there will be times that we will be called to face struggles for the sake of our faith. We might have at times to set aside personal con-
venience to stand up for the truth and justice. We might even be judged wrongly and ostracized for choosing to follow the Gospel. But so be it if only because we stand up for Christ and the Kingdom of God! Our Lord Jesus will be our
strength!
Let us pray for the souls of our dearly departed. May they find peace.
