Do you rejoice in the good that others do? Jesus reprimands his disciples for their jealousy and suspicion. They were upset that someone who was not of their company was performing a good work in the name of Jesus. They even "forbade" the man "because he was not following us." Jesus' reply is filled with wisdom: "No one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me." Are we not like the disciples when we get upset at the good deeds of others who seem to shine more than us? Paul says that "love is not jealous... but rejoices in the right" (1 Corinthians 13:4,6).

Dear Parish Family,
This weekend our nation is welcoming our holy father Pope Francis for the first time to the United States. We pray this weekend for his safety, but also that his visit will have a real impact on the heart and soul of our nation. Since it will be impossible for most of us to attend any of the events involving Pope Francis our pastoral Council decided to provide some fun events right here at St. James to help us in enter into the spirit of celebration and joy at the gift of Pope Francis pastoral visit to the United States. I am grateful to the concert committee and to the "Stardust Big Band" for providing us once again with the wonderful evening of entertainment. And I am also grateful to all those participating in box Village, helping us to raise money for homeless families to the Ministry of Family Promise, Union County organization we've been partnering with to assist homeless families in our area. It is my hope that many of you are joining us this weekend for our tailgate potluck lunch and to view the papal mass from Philadelphia at 4 PM on Sunday. While the media will certainly tell us much about what the pope says and what he means, it is my hope that each of us will try to hear what the pope is saying directly and not through the prism of television news or the Internet. On our parish website you can find links to the Vatican website and to Zenit.org. Both will be excellent websites to read the Popes words directly. May these days of grace truly have an impact on us long after Pope Francis returns to Rome. And don't miss the opportunity this weekend to have your picture taken with Pope Francis in our gathering area! One of the joys of autumn is that parish life begins to take on a new energy, and many of our parishioners who have been off doing other things return now to their homes. Last weekend we celebrated catechetical Sunday, blessing our wonderful catechists under the direction of Nancy Caputo and praying for our children, that this year will see them grow in grace and in faith. This year we sadly announced the departure from our religious edu-cation office of Maggie Keffer who many of you have come to know for her gentle faith and kindness. Maggie is still a parishioner and will remain working on our pastoral Council, but we wish her well as she takes on her new position working for the Township of Springfield. Archbishop Myers issued a letter regarding Catechetical Sunday to all the parishes and institutions of the archdio-cese of Newark. He said:
“The Bishops of the United States have given us a very powerful theme to consider this year. “Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person” is a theme which is full of significance for us. It recalls the many im-portant life issues which confront our society and with which we as Catholic Christians must grapple in the public forum: abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, are certainly all important and current issues which we must address from a Gospel viewpoint and which the ministry of catechesis must assist us in under-standing from a faith perspective. But our Holy Father, Pope Francis has also recently called us to widen our perspective in “Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person when in his recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, the Holy Father has reminded us that this theme also involved protecting the earth and all who dwell in it, protecting those who are impacted by the abuse of the environment, most often the poor and the margin-alized, as well as those who are negatively affected by unjust economic systems. These, too, are areas where the Catholic Christians is impelled by the power of the Gospel to “Safeguard the Dignity of Every Human Person.” It is the purpose of catechesis to draw us ever closer to Jesus, to a deeper understanding of our Catholic faith and to understand how because of what we believe, we are called to “Safeguard the Dignity of Every Human Person.” I extend my gratitude and that of the whole Church of Newark to our catechists, our parish catechetical leaders and our Catholic school teachers and administrators and pledge to them our support and prayers.”

This workshop uses a tool to help you identify which spiritual gifts you have been blessed with and which you are challenged to use in living out your baptismal call to build the Kingdom of God.
PART II: “Responding to the Call: Exercising your Spiritual Gifts” ~ October 28th, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
This workshop goes deeper into many of the themes of the first workshop, but here focused more on “call.” We will unpack how we are called; the ways that God call us; the influence of our spiritual heritage in determining our call; developing tools for discernment; exercising our spiritual gifts in the world/work, not just in ministry; the ever-present call to evangelize in all parts of life; Lectio Divina and journaling
Facilitator: Julie Burkey, D.Min, is an Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Theology at Immaculate Conception Semi-nary. She received a Master’s Degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from The Catholic University of America. The 2015 – 2016 Respect Life program starts with Respect Life month – observed each October since 1972. Respect Life Sunday is observed this year on October 4th. This year’s theme is Every Life is Worth Living. Please join us following the 10:30am mass on October 4th for a very short prayer service at the memorial stone for the unborn which is located in front of the convent. Respect Life prayer cards will be available that week-end in each pew. Please take one home with you and, if you can, take another one for a neighbor. As Catholics we are called to build a civilization of love based on the principles of the Gospel. And the foundation of that civilization must be a culture of life. Sometimes we feel so small in this wide world of ours. We wonder how we can make a difference. We know every little bit helps, but sometimes we feel so inadequate rising up against some of the global issues we face on a daily basis. Jesus tells us that the small-est of seeds turns into the largest of plants. Together, united with the world-wide Church, we can make a difference. If we get involved, put our words into action, then most certainly we can make a difference. It’s when we feel defeated and insignificant that the devil has much to work with. Let’s give him nothing and God everything.

The writings of St. Thérèse reveal the deep affection she had for both her parents. Although she lost her mother when she was four and her entrance into Car-mel at the age of fifteen separated her from her father, she remained close to them in memory and prayer. In a letter to her spiritual brother, Father Maurice Bellière she writes, "God gave me a father and a mother more worthy of heaven than of earth; they asked the Lord to give them many children and to take them for Him-self." That Zélie and Louis strove to teach their daugh-ters to lead a life of holiness was attested to by the fact that all five of their daughters entered Carmel. In one of the few letters that remain from Louis, he writes, "...Thérèse, my little Queen, entered Carmel yesterday! God alone could demand such a sacrifice, but He's helping me so powerfully through my tears, my heart abounds with joy." Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Louis and Zélie Martin on October 18th, 2015. Cardi-nal Amato, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, drew attention to the soon-to-be saints' "exemplary life of faith, dedication to ideal val-ues united to a constant realism, and persistent atten-tion to the poor."*

SAILING THROUGH SEPTEMBER! Incredulous that it is already Autumn, parents turned out in force at our Back-to-School Night where they warmly welcomed our new principal, Caroline Ponterio, visited their children’s classrooms, and met with the teachers. Thanks to our parents for their support, and much appreciation to the Home & School Association for rallying volunteer parents all year. School Happenings Several of our 8th grade students visited the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart last Monday to venerate the Major Relics of Saint Maria Goretti – the Little Saint of Great Mercy. Newark is the first stop on this national tour of 16 states and 25 dioceses around the country. In preparation, Father John presented the life story of Saint Maria to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, reminding them how important it is to develop the virtue of forgiveness. During Social Studies period, our 7th graders virtually traveled to Washington D.C. for the 9/17 national ob-servance of Constitution Day. Participating in a live event featuring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer sharing the particulars of his job, they were also able to take a virtual tour of the National Constitution Center guided by Judge Marjorie O. Rendell. Pope Francis has arrived at Saint James! A large card-board cut-out of the Pope is visiting each of the class-rooms in preparation for his visit to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. Look for our close-ups! All faculty and staff are gathering with our Archdiocesan school community at the Cathedral Basilica in Newark for an Opening of the School Year Mass, celebrating how Catholic schools personnel make Catholic education outstanding. We are in great need of three First Grade Catechists and one Third Grade Catechist on Tuesday afternoons. This is a wonderful ministry where you actually get back more than you give! If you are available from 3:30-5:15 on Tuesday afternoons, please consider joining this vibrant ministry! Religious Education is an ongoing formation from Grade 1 (Kindergarten is optional) through Grade 8; with the Sacrament of Confirmation taking place in the Fall of 9th Grade. BAPTISM Communal Baptisms are held on the last Sunday of each month at 1:30pm in the Church. Please see the dates listed below. Please contact the Parish Office for scheduling information.
RECONCILIATION Individual Confessions are heard every Saturday at 11:00am in the Church, or anytime by appointment.
EUCHARIST Communion can be brought to the sick and homebound either at home or in a facility. Please contact the Parish Office to make arrangements.
CONFIRMATION Adult Confirmation for those already Baptized and wish to complete their sacraments are encouraged to contact the Parish Office.
MARRIAGE Couples interested in marriage are asked to call the Parish Office at least one year prior to their desired date so that arrangements can be made.
VOCATIONS Is God calling you to the priesthood or Religious Life? Speak to one of our priests or call the Vocations Office 973-497-4365. Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK This Sacrament can be administered anytime. We make visits to area hospitals and nursing homes. Please contact the Parish Office.
THE RCIA PROCESS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process where individuals who seek to receive the Sacraments of Initiation or who have never been baptized enter into full communion with the faith. Contact the Parish Office for details.
BAPTISM INFORMATION The catechesis class begins by attending the 12:00pm Mass with instruction about the rite and its meaning following Mass. Godparents are encouraged to attend. Baptism Ceremonies are held at 1:30pm and we ask that everyone arrive by 1:15pm.
