What does Jesus' parable tell us about God and the way he deals with his people? First, it tells us of God's generosity and trust. The vineyard is well equipped with everything the tenants need. The owner went away and left the vineyard in the hands of the tenants. God likewise trusts us enough to give us freedom to run life as we choose. This parable also tells us of God's patience and justice. Not once, but many times he forgives the tenants their debts. But while the tenants take advantage of the owner's patience, his judgment and justice prevail in the end.

SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH BULLETIN 638 :: OCTOBER 5, 2014 PAGE 3
Dear Parish Family, When we think of saints, very often we think of them as figures in stained glass or plaster statues very far removed from our own time, place and experience. Yet, the exact opposite is true! The Saints were people very much like us, with many of the same struggles and temptations we experience. They were people, however, in love with Christ, and that love permeated their entire lives. This weekend here in the Archdiocese of Newark we will have a celebration at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark that no diocese in the United States has ever witnessed: a Mass for the Beatification of Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, S. C., Servant of God. Sister Miriam Teresa, who will be known as Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, was born in Bayonne in 1901 and lived her entire life in this area. She taught in Jersey City, and eventually became a Sister of Charity of St. Eliza-beth at Convent Station near Morristown. In fact, one of her brothers was a priest of the Archdiocese! During the few years Blessed Miriam Teresa lived as a Sister of Charity (from 1924 until her death in 1926) she was known for her personal holiness, although many around her only recognized just how holy she was after her death. Her spiritual director, a Benedictine priest, became aware of how God was working in her life, and he asked her to write the spiritual conferences he was delivering to the Sisters. This was a rather unique thing for a priest to ask of a young Sister (if any of you want to write my homilies, I’d be happy to give it some considera-tion!). After her death, the priest let it be known that his conferences were actually the thoughts of Sr. Miriam Teresa, and eventually these conferences were collected in a book called “Greater Perfection.” This book, trans-lated today into five languages, is a spiritual masterpiece, and I would encourage any of you to read it. Also, Sister Miriam Teresa was the beneficiary of some truly extraordinary mystical graces, among them an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary who came to her one evening as she looked out the window of her bedroom, and an encoun-ter with St. Therese of the Child Jesus one afternoon as she walked around the grounds of the Motherhouse in Morristown. Both of these experiences showed the intimate relationship she had with heaven even as she walked the earth. After several decades of investigation into the life and heroic sanctity of Sr. Miriam Teresa, our Holy Father Pope Francis made the decision to beatify her (the last step before canonization as a saint). For beatification, it is neces-sary that the Church approve a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Miriam Teresa. This miracle took place in the 1960’s when a young boy in Teaneck, N.J. had his sight restored after prayer to Sr. Miriam Teresa. Today he is in his 50’s and his sight is still 20/20. Now, for canonization, another miracle needs to be approved by the Church. So, if you are needing a miracle in your life, ask Blessed Miriam Teresa to pray with you! And maybe pay her shrine a visit- her earthly remains are interred behind the wall in the Sisters of Charity chapel at Convent Station. So you see, saints are not so far away from us, from our time or place. In fact, perhaps there are some living among us right now! Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, pray for us! In His Love,
~ Fr. John

BIBLE SCRIPTURES TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7~ 7:30PM
October 14, 21, 28, November. 4, 11, 18
Have you tried to read Scripture and found that you “just don’t get it”?
The key to understanding the Bible is finding the story that ties it all together. The Great Adventure Bible Timeline learning system makes the complex simple by helping you to uncover the story woven through Scrip-ture, so that you can make sense of it all. Join us Tues-day nights this Fall in the Upper Auditorium of the School.
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
Members of this ministry create handmade shawls and blankets that are delivered to those suffering from illness or grief or to the homebound and the elderly. The shawls are a simple and loving way to provide comfort and support to those in need. They also remind the recipients of the continued prayers of the St. James parish community. It’s a wonderful way to share your talents and bring a bit of joy and hope to a friend. This ministry is open to the experienced knitter as well as those looking to learn and get started.
October Evening Meeting: Thurs., Oct 9 ~ 7:00 – 9:00 PM

Abortion is the leading cause of death in the world, ending more lives than cardiovascular disease, cancer, AIDS, war and hunger. YOU CAN CHANGE THAT! 40 Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history, helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortion through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigils. Go to www.40daysforlife.com for more information. October is Respect Life Month. The theme this year is “Each of Us is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation”. “Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in His own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect”. SAINT JAMES WELCOMES OUR NEW DEACON!
My name is Deacon Art. My wife Nancy and I have 3 daughters and four grandchildren. I am proud to say that we have been happily married some 56 years. I was ordained Deacon on May 5, 2011 for the Diocese of Pater-son and served as deacon at St. Philip the Apostle in Clifton for six years. My wife and I moved to upper New York State and I was transferred to the Albany Diocese, where I served a small parish in Bolton Landing, NY for the past 7 years. My wife and I just relocated to Springfield to be closer to our children and grandchildren.
Father John Gabriel has been gracious to allow me to serve you here at St. James the Apostle. I am very happy in my ministry as deacon and I will do my best, with your help and prayers to service the people of St. James and the surrounding community for a long time to come.
Thank you,
Deacon Art Bandel

INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK
At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick. Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening condition. We will continue to pray for and mention the names of our sick parishioners when we receive notice from the family or the individual asking for prayers. Their name will be mentioned for three weeks and after, the names will continue in the bulletin, until we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens we will mention the name again at Mass when notified.

We had a terrific start of our new school year! It was great welcoming back returning families as well as new families who have recently moved into our parish community. Important reminder: we do have classes next Sunday, October 12 but do not have classes on Sunday, October 19. Families of children receiving the Sacraments of Rec-onciliation and First Eucharist will begin receiving infor-mation via email the beginning of November; please be sure we have the most up to date email address for you! This year for the first time, we will offer a Satur-day morning First Eucharist Mass and all the Masses will take place over one weekend. Religious Education is an ongoing formation from Grade 1 (Kindergarten is optional) through Grade 8; with the Sacrament of Confirmation taking place in the Fall of 9th Grade. If your child has not received continuous religious education since receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, please call the religious education office. If your child receives special accommodations in public school please let me know.
SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH BULLETIN 638 :: OCTOBER 5, 2014 PAGE 9
Well, our children are! Fall picture day is Monday, October 5, 2014. The school photographer will be here all day to take the official school photos. Students are to wear full dress uniform – even if it is a gym day – phys. ed. will be adjusted accordingly. Now is the time to make sure that we can check off: picture day haircuts; hair accessories; pressed collars; matching knee socks; polished shoes; you get the idea. New this year are uniforms for Kindergarteners, which were a suggestion of parents (very smart because it makes picking out clothes so much easier). Both individual and class photos will be taken. These are the photos you’ll put on the mantle or the sofa table, slip into your wallet, keep at your desk, give to Grandma and Grandpa. Snapshots in time, these pictures are our children’s “throw back Thursday” or #tbt photos of tomorrow. For now, we’ll deal with the hassle of getting them taken and marvel at how they are in this moment. We’ll think about how fast time is passing, and use the pictures as little reminders, each time we catch ourselves looking at them, that life keeps moving and it is up to us to savor our children’s school year. Picture day comes round faster and faster each year until suddenly there are none and we find ourselves relying on Instagram for a snapshot into their lives. Expect an automated call from Saint James School this Thursday, October 9th around 7pm. The emergency phone system is being tested. If you don’t receive a call, please contact the office.
