• Summary: The purpose of this presentation is to provide the student with the knowledge and

understanding of various notable symbols in America that are recognizable worldwide.

• Objective: Given numerous facts about symbols in America, the student will apply what they have

learned and answer questions about American symbols with 100% accuracy.

• Standard: Governance establishes structures of power and authority in order to provide order and

stability. Civic efficacy requires understanding rights and responsibilities, ethical behavior, and the role of

citizens within their community, nation, and world.

• Accomplishments: Explain selected national and state patriotic symbols such as the United States and

Tennessee flags.

• 1.4.04 Recognize the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become contributing citizens.

The American Flag:There are many symbols that represent the United States of America that are known all around the world.

The American Flag is one of the most popular symbols. Once America became independent our own flag was created. The colors red, white, and blue were chosen as the country’s colors to be put on the flag.

The American flag has 50 stars to represent all 50 states and 13 stripes for the original colonies.

Symbolic Animals:The Bald Eagle: The symbol chosen in 1782 to be the official animal for the United States because it was strong, lived a long life, and was only found in the US. The eagle was then put on the American and Presidential seal.

The Donkey: The symbol for the American Democratic Party. The current President, President Barack Obama, is a Democrat.

The Elephant: The symbol for the American Republican Party. The former President , George Bush, Jr., is a Republican.

The Horse: The animal the Paul Revere rode to inform America that the British were coming to attack in the famous poem Paul Revere’s Ride.

Symbols in Washington D.C.Washington D.C is the capital of the United States of America. The are many symbolic items in this city.

The White House is possibly the most famous symbol of the United States. It is the home of the President during their term and the famous Oval Office. This house has 132 rooms!

The Lincoln Memorial is the 99ft building built to honor the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. This was also the place of Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech.
