ADJUDICATORS’BIOGRAPHIESPhilipDewhurst–WoodwindandBrassPhilip Dewhurst was born and educated in Bolton, Lancashire.He read music at the University ofNewcastle-upon-Tyne under Professor Denis Matthews where he specialised in performance on theoboe.Afterfinishinghisdegree,hecompletedaPostGraduateCertificateofEducationandthenpursuedacareerasDirectorofMusicinseveralprestigiousindependentschools.Aswellasteaching,Philipgivesoccasionalrecitalsandenjoysorchestralandchambermusicplayingonafreelancebasiswhenhisteachingcommitmentspermit.Philipalsohasapassionforchoralmusicandhasconductedanddirectedchoirs&choralsocietiesthroughouthiscareer.PhilipregularlyadjudicatesatmusicfestivalsaroundtheUKandisanexaminerforTrinityCollegeLondonaswellasbeinganexperiencedGCSEandAlevelmoderator.KathrynPage–PianoKathrynPagehasgivenover20recitalsattheSouthBankandWigmoreHall,bothassoloistandchambermusic pianist. She has touredNorway, Italy, Ireland and Australiawhere she gave seven recitals at theSydney Festival and broadcast for ABC. At home Kathryn has performed atmany of the leadingmusicfestivals and has given numerous live broadcasts for BBC radio 3 fromBroadcastingHouse, StGeorges,Bristol andStDavidsHall,Cardiff.Her interest in contemporarymusichas led tomanyworldpremieresincluding works by Gary Carpenter, Alisdair Nicholson and Django Bates. She has worked with manyestablished artists including David Campbell, John Lenehan, JoannaMacGregor and Sting! TV work hasrangedfromaliverecitalfromParisonCNN,anappearanceontheKoreanbroadcastingnetwork,severalperformancesonIrishTVandamuch-treasuredBluePeterbadge.In1991sherecordedthecompletesetofsixMozart-GriegduosonatasforBBCRadioThree.InrecentyearsKathrynhasworkedprolificallyasapopularandbusyadjudicator for theBritishFederationofFestivals,ABRSMexaminer,andadministratorforEPTAUK, theChetham’s International SummerSchoolForPianistsand theManchester InternationalConcerto Competition. She recorded Bartok’s Sonata for 2 Pianos, Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ andCamilleri’s Concerto for 2 Pianos and Percussion with Murray McLachlan, and gave an acclaimedperformanceofMessiaen’sQuartetfortheEndofTimeatChetham’s.IonaZiuderwijk–StringsBorninLiverpool,Ionabeganpianoandviolinlessons,learningthelatterfromPeterMountain.Shewentto Chethams School ofMusic in 1969 and toWells Cathedral school in 1972. At the Royal Academy ofMusicshestudiedviolinwithMollyMackandRalphHolmes,takingharpsichordashersecondinstrument.FreelanceorchestralplayinginLondonfollowedmusiccollegeandIonalatertookonadifferentcareerinsocialwork,qualifyingasaprobationofficerandsheworkedinavarietyofchallengingsettings.Bychanceshe met the teaching team of Sheila Nelson and became a trainee and passionate teacher as aconsequence,jumpingbackintoacareerinmusicandstudyingviolinwithHowardDavis.IonawasaHeadofStringsatvariousschoolsandGuernseyMusicService,andDirectorofastringteachingprojectbasedinSheffieldcalledFiddleFingers.AsaheadofmusicsheusedKodalyandeurhythmicstopreparechildrenforlearninganinstrumentandwentbacktoChethamstoassistinLowerschoolstringteaching.IonabecameanexaminerforTrinityCollegein2006andshealsooffersworkshopsforviolinteachersandprimarymusicteachers.Liverpoolisonceagainherhome.

AngelaRowley–VoiceAngela, a graduate in German from University College, London, followed a career in teaching beforeembarkingonvoicetraining,workingwithmanyeminentteachersincludingthelatePaulHamburger.Herfirstexperiencesofpublicperformancewereatschool,inchoralsocietiesandatMusicFestivals.Sheencouragesherpupilsandchoirtoenterfestivalsfortheopportunitytoperform,hearpeersandreceiveprofessionalcritique.Herhopesarethattheexperiencewillbechallenging,educationalandfun!AngelahasperformedwidelyintheUKandinGermany,FranceandRomaniaandstillperformsregularlyinrecital,concertandoratoriowithaspecialloveofLieder,Frenchsongand20thcenturyEnglishsong.Sheisparticularlykeenonpoetryanditsmusicalinterpretation.Angela foundedand isMDofHarmony '96,a largeadhocchoirwhichperformsmajororatoriostwiceayear.In2015thechoirperformedBeethoven’s9thChoralSymphonywiththeHazelGroveOrchestra.SheisalsoMDofEcclesCommunityChoir,enjoyinganopportunitytodevelopthevoicesofthosewhowereneverallowedintheschoolchoir!ThechoirhasvisitedSalford’stwintownofLünen,Germany,threetimeswithperformancesinCologneandBrugescathedralsandattheMeninGate,Ypres.In2016thechoirwaspartofaninternationalchoirwhichperformedHowardGoodall’s‘EternalLight’intheCarnegieHall,NewYork.ForseveralyearsAngelataughtsinginginalargecomprehensiveschoolandlaterinaSixthFormCollegewheresheformedachoir,assistedintheproductionofmusicalsandinitiatedthedevelopmentofmusicinthecurriculumforstudentswithbothmildandseverelearningdifficulties.Sheisafirmbelieverthatmusicisanessentiallifeskillandthatnooneshouldbeexcludedongroundsofability.Angela’sstudentsandchoirhaveparticipatedinthewritingandproductionoforiginalworksaspartoftheBBC Philharmonic’s Community Programme and performed in the Proms at the Albert Hall and for theQueenonhervisittoMediaCity,Salford.Angelahasaprivatepracticeandregularlyrunsperformanceworkshopsandmasterclasses.AlongsidehersingingcareerAngelarunsacharity inKenyawithherhusband. www.rowleyprojects.comandisfounderandchairmanoftrusteesofTheMillYouthCentre,Bramhall.MichaelDow–ChoralMichael was appointed Director of Music at Bowdon Parish Choir in 2013. He read music at Christ’sCollege, Cambridge, where he was a Choral Scholar. He taught at Chetham’s School of Music and iscurrentlyDirectorofMusicatStockportGrammarSchool.Michael’sotherconductingworkhas includedappearances with the Northern Baroque Orchestra since 2003 and concerts with Stockport SymphonyOrchestra and Cheshire Sinfonia.HewasMusical Director ofMarple Choral Society for 7 years and hasworkedwithseveralotherchoirs.HehassungoccasionallyasabasswiththeBBCDailyServiceSingers.HehasadjudicatedMusicFestivalsacrosstheNorthwest.

DavidHoult–YoungInstrumentalistoftheYearDavidHoultwasPrincipalofLeedsCollegeofMusicfrom1993untilhisretirementin2008.BeforethathewasHeadofMusicatUniversityCollegeSalford,andDirectorofMusicatCheadleHulmeSchool.Hewasthe founderand firstChairmanofYorkshireYoungMusicians,agovernment-fundedCentreofAdvancedTrainingforexceptionallytalentedyoungmusicians.David has been an adjudicatormember of the British and International Federation of Festivals for overfortyyears.HehasappearedatmanyfestivalsthroughouttheUKandfurtherafield,includingtheNationalFestivalofMusicforYouth,theGranadaTelevisionNationalSchoolChoirsCompetition,andatfestivalsandcompetitionsinHongKong,SriLanka,andTrinidadandTobago.His performingbackground is as a professional singer, hornplayer and conductor. Heholds degrees inmusicfromtheuniversitiesofManchesterandLancaster,andhestudiedsingingwithJohnCameronattheRoyal Northern College of Music. As a horn player in the 1970s, he performed with many Britishorchestras, including the Halle and BBC Philharmonic. For many years he was a member of the BBCNorthern Singers, giving countless concerts and broadcasts throughout the UK and Europe, and also inAustraliaandtheFarEast. HehasperformedatmostofthemajorBritishfestivals, includingtheProms,Edinburgh,AldeburghandCheltenham.Asasoloisthehassungmuchofthestandardconcertandoratoriorepertoire, aswell as a numberof operatic baritone roles, including Figaro inMozart's TheMarriageofFigaroandLeporelloinDonGiovanni.HehasalsobeenaregularbroadcasteronBBCRadios3and4.

SusanMacKay–Speech&DramaFor10yearsSusanranTheFyldeStageSchoolteachinglevelsofRADandISTDdanceandLAMDASpeechand Drama before graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy ofMusic and Drama. After seasons inRepertoryTheatre,touringandT.Vshedecidedthatitwastimetorealiseotherdreams.ShenowdirectsUpstage Drama, teaching Speech and Drama, GCSE Drama, Upstage Young Peoples Theatre and BareBoardsTheatreCompany.SusanadjudicatesatfestivalsallovertheUKaswellasCorkandHongKong.SheisanadjudicatormemberoftheBritishandInternationalFederationofFestivalsandhasservedasadeputyontheAdjudicatorsCouncil.Susanseesherroleasanadjudicatorasacombinationofbringingnewideasandapproachestotextandperformanceaswellas freshencouragementtoeveryparticipant.Shefeelsthateveryoneshouldleaveafestivalwithasenseofachievement.MaryroseSwarbrick–Speech&Drama

Having spent a lifetimeworking in theatre,MaryroseSwarbrick founded Stage Door Theatre Company tofoster talent of all ages and from all walks of life,alongside her role as Head of Drama at St Mary'sHall,StonyhurstCollege-apostwhichsheheldforsixteenyears.

ApassionatebelieverintheenrichingroleoftheDramaticArts,shecontinuestoadjudicatedramafortheBritish and International Federation of Festivals. Proud and privileged to play a part in young people'sprogress, shebelieves thather role is toencourage,educateanddemonstratehowto improve in speech,dramaandcommunicationskills.

ManyofherstudentshavegoneontostudyatRADA,Mountview,ArtsEdandLSMTaswellasworking inrolesattheHousesofParliament,GlobalRadio,NationalTours,theWestEndandBroadway.

ThisyearMaryroseherselfhasworkedintheatre,filmandtelevision.OneofherbestachievementssawherdirectingandproducingtheworldpremiereofYOLO-anewandpowerfulplayexploringthepsychologicalimpactofcancer.

Maryrose'sworkasanactor,teacherandadjudicatorkeepsherverybusybutinhermomentsofrelaxationshelovesnothingmorethanspendingtimewithherhusbandandtwodaughters.

HelenClark–Speech&Drama

Helen has over 20 years’ experience as a drama teacher, private tutor, examiner, drama advisor, youththeatreleaderandproprietorofherowndramaschool.Shehasworkedextensivelywithchildrenandyoungadultsandcontinuestoenjoyavarietyofteachingexperiencesasbothafreelancerandclassroomteacherattwolocalprimaryschools.

Shestartedhercareerasdramayouthleaderatalocaltheatrewhiletrainingasaqualifiedteacher.Shehassincegoneontoworkasadramateacherinboththeprimaryandsecondarysectoratavarietyofschools,entering pupils for both LAMDA and English Speaking Board exams as well as local festivals, speechcompetitionsandevents.

Other teaching roles have included advisor andworkshop leader at Artis Education, Principal of her ownSaturdaydramaschoolandayearinKualaLumpur,Malaysiateachingpublicspeaking,dramaandEnglish.

She has also worked as an examiner for The English Speaking Board andmore recently, has taken up apositionexaminingforLAMDA.

OFFICIALACCOMPANISTS’BIOGRAPHIESTimKennedyTim studiedmusic at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and is now a freelancemusician based inManchester.Aswellasbeingapianoaccompanist,healsoworksasaprofessionalsinger,vocalcoachandorganist.HeisastaffrepetiteurfortheSchoolofVocalandOperaStudiesattheRoyalNorthernCollegeofMusic, playing for singing classes, assessments and recitals. He is also an accompanist for the BritishandInternational Federationof Festivals. This involvesworking regularly as anofficial accompanist at anumberofcompetitivemusicfestivalsintheNorthofEngland,includingAlderleyEdge,Bowdon,Burnley,Buxton, Chester, Cleethorpes, Fleetwood, Hazel Grove, Heaton Mersey, Sheffield, and at RegionalChampionshipevents.Tim isoneof theofficial accompanistsataprestigiousnewcompetition for singers fromconservatoiresand universities around the country, called the Singers’ Platform, part of the David Clover Festival inSheffield. 19. Inall children's classeswhereanage limit is stipulatedeachperformermustbewithin theage limitspecifiedatthedateoftheFestival.20.Allclassesshallbeopentoamateursonly.Forthispurpose,amateur isdefinedasanypersonwhoseprincipalmeansof livelihoodisobtainedfromnonmusicalordramaticwork,evenifhe/shefromtimetotimereceivesafeeorhonorariumformusicalordramaticservices.21.Allcertificates,medals,trophiesandplaquesareawardedatthediscretionoftheadjudicatorandtheFestivalCommittee.Incertainclassesatrophyandcashprizewillbeawardedtowinnersintheclassesandcertificateswillbeawardedtoall.Prizewinnerswillbearanycostofengravingtrophies.22.Insomecircumstances,whenclassesareheavilysubscribed,theywillbesplitintosubclassestoavoidparticipantsandtheirsupportershavingtositthroughextremelylongclasses.Forexample,Class93couldbe split into 3 sub classes, Class 93A, 93B and 93C. Performerswill be allocated at random to the subclasses.Wherethishappens,atrophyandfirst,secondandthirdplacecertificateswillbeawardedineachsubclass. Intheeventthatthere isacashprizeforaclassthathastobesplit,acashprizeofthevaluestatedvalueintheSyllabuswillbeawardedineachofthesubclasses.23. Communications (other than those appropriate to the Entry Secretary) should be addressed to theChairandastamped,addressedenvelopeenclosedifareplyisrequired.24.Allenquiries,complaintsorrepresentationsmustbemadeinwritingtotheChair.25.TheCommitteereservestherighttocloseclassesbeforetheclosingdateforentriesifitisfeltthattheFestivalisover-subscribed.26.Novideo/audiorecordingorphotographywillbeallowedduringclasses.27.Unlessotherwisestated,theuseofelectronicequipmentforsoundamplificationisnotallowed.28.ThedecisionoftheCommitteeinallquestionsanddisputesarisingoutof,ornotprovidedforintheseregulationsshallbefinal.29.TheOfficialPhotographerwilltakephotographsduringtheday,whichmaysubsequentlybepassedtothePressorusedonBowdonFestival’swebsiteorintheirpromotionalmaterial.ByenteringtheBowdonYouthFestival,performersandtheirparentsconsenttothisuseofphotographsbyBowdonFestival. Ifaparent or carer does not wish a child to be photographed, it is their responsibility to arrange forsupervisionoftheirchildduringtheFestivalbythemselvesoraresponsiblepersonandforthatpersontoadvisetheOfficialPhotographeraccordingly.InthecaseofChoirs,itistheresponsibilityoftheteacherenteringtheChoirtoadvisetheBowdonYouthFestival ifphotographstakenat theeventmaynotbepassedtothePressorusedonBowdonFestival’swebsiteorintheirpromotionalmaterial.

SAFEGUARDINGPOLICYFORALLTEACHERS,PARENTS,GUARDIANSANDCARERS-SAFEGUARDINGDUTYTeachers,parents,guardiansandcarersareremindedoftheirrolesinthepartnershipbetweenthemselvesandtheFestivalinprotectingchildrenandvulnerablegroups.TheBowdonYouthFestivaliscommittedtopromotingthewelfareandsafetyofallchildrenunder18,andvulnerableyoungpeople,whotakepart,andexpectthosewhoareresponsibleforenteringthemtodothesame.Toachievethis,weexpectall teachers,parents,guardiansandcarerstoreadtheChildProtectionPolicyandticktheboxontheon-lineentryformtoacknowledgethatalltheirparticipantshavebeeninformedofthepolicyandwheretoaccessit.Our Festival seeks to support all entrants and needs to know ahead of time if additional support isrequiredinordertoassesstheneedsandprepareforthemtobemetwherepossible.We particularly request that all teachers ensure that parents, guardians and carers know that theresponsibilitylieswiththeminthepursuanceofourChildProtectionPolicy.Inparticularpleasenote:

1.THEFESTIVALENVIRONMENT:It is our policy to inform and involve parents/guardians/carers and teachers in partnership in order toensure, as far as it is reasonably practicable, a safe environment at our Festival. As there are separatevenues at the Festival (Bowdon Parish Centre, St Mary’s Church and other local buildings),parents/guardians/carersandteachersmustensurethattheysupervisetheirchildren/pupilsastheymovebetween venues. The volunteer organisers and stewards at the Festival work to provide a caringenvironment with the highest possible protection for children and vulnerable groups by creating apartnershipwhichseekstoensurethehigheststandardofcareonFestivaldays.2.FESTIVALPERSONNEL:AllFestivalpersonnelarevolunteers.DuringtheFestivalallvolunteerswillwearabadge.AllstewardsarerecruitedbyrecommendationandknowntotheCommittee.Allstewardshaveashortjobdescriptionforthepositiontheyoccupyandarebriefedpriortothecommencementoftheirduties,whichareassignedonaskillsbasis.Parents/guardians/carersandteachersareaskedtoreportincidentsofanynaturetoanyonewearingabadgesuppliedby theFestival. These incidentswillbe recordedanddated inaboundbook,whichwillbemonitoredbyadesignatedperson-allincidentswillbetakenseriously.AquietareaintheofficeoftheParishCentrehasbeenidentifiedwhereconcernsmaybeexpressed.

3.PREPARATIONFORATTENDANCEATTHEFESTIVAL:OurPolicy isto informparents/guardians/carersand/orteachersandtoestablishapartnershipbetweenthem and the Festival for its implementation. Each entry form has an agreement for thosewhomakeentriestosigninacknowledgementthattheparticipantshavebeeninformedofthispolicy.ForthedurationoftheFestivalparents/guardians/carersandteachersareresponsibleforthecontinuouscare and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to attend personally, they mustdelegatetheirresponsibilitiestoanidentifiedadultandensurethattheirchildren/pupilsareawareoftheidentityandnameofthepersonresponsiblefortheircare.

4.PERFORMANCEAREASANDCHANGINGAREAS:TherearenochangingroomsprovidedbytheFestivalatanyofthevenues.TheFestivaldoesnotsupervisepracticeroomsoranypublicareas,whichincluderefreshmentareasandtoiletfacilities.

5.PHOTOGRAPHS,VIDEO/DIGITALRECORDINGANDPRESSPHOTOGRAPHY:Nophotography,video/digitaloraudiorecordingonanykindofcamera,mobilephone,recorderortablet,isallowedatanyvenueduringtheFestival.Signstothiseffectaredisplayedatallvenuesandstewardswillmakeannouncementspriortothecommencementofallclassesandrecitals.On all Festival days an Official Photographer will be in attendance and the photographs takenmay bepassedtothelocalmediaorusedontheBowdonFestivalwebsiteorintheirpromotionalmaterial.Whereparents/carersdonotwishphotos tobe taken, then the responsibleadultattendingshouldensure thattheirchildorchildrenarenotincludedinphotographs.
