CLEAN Up iN NSW
I youre thinking about setting up a cleantech project,
or moving or expanding such a business in Australia,
talk to our business development agency, NSW Trade &
Investment. We can help with inormation or business
plans, benchmarking inormation, innovation programs
to support technology commercialisation, export
support programs, and much more.
Wiping TheSTaTe CleanHow New South Wales isast becoming the home o
Cleantech in Asia Pacifc.
When youve got the largestpopulation in Australia, itsnatural that you take cleanenergy seriously as youvealso got the largest energy
market in the country.
Its why were much more than just supporters
o new investment in clean technology, were
actively driving it orward.
Youll nd New South Wales (NSW) is home to a
range o leading clean energy and environmental
services companies a genuine hub o capability
and continuing innovation. A State that is ull o
opportunity and support or new cleantech
businesses, investment and ideas.
Were setting our sights on a cleaner, greener uture and we look orward to having you join us.

TargeTing a greener TomorroWBy 2020 we want 20% o NSW electricity supply rom renewable sources.
About A$8 billion is spent on environmental goodsand services in NSW each year. NSW has appointeda Parliamentary Secretary or Renewable Energyand is developing a Renewable Energy Action Plan.
Six Renewable Energy Precincts have been
established across NSW to encourage renewable
energy development.
There is plenty e lse happening in NSW:
In 2010, hydropower accounted or 8% oelectricity generation; over 800 GWh o power
was generated rom landll gas and biowaste.
The states ethanol and biodiesel mandates
are encouraging the development o biomass
technologies and eedstocks.
In 2010, wind power contributed over 460 GWh;
over 8,000 MW o additional wind generation
capacity is in planning.
The Moree Solar Farm has been awarded
Australian Government unding or a 150 MW
solar photovoltaic power plant under the SolarFlagships program, with the NSW Government
pledging A$120 million.
Opportunities are being pursued to develop
Geothermal, Wave and Tidal Energy.
Ausgrids Smart Grid, Smart City project in
Newcastle, Sydney and Scone will help lead
advances in energy management and integration
o renewable energy into electricity transmission
and distribution networks, aided by A$100 million
in Australian Government unding.
A Waste and Environment Levy has been
introduced, with a recycling target o 66%
o solid waste by 2014.
We want 12% o Sydneys water recycled by 2015.
Were aiming or 4,000 GWh o annual electricitysavings by 2014, and have energy-eciency
training and unding programs or businesses,
communities and Government agencies.
The Building and Sustainability Index places energy
and water standards on new residential buildings
and the National Australian Built Environment
Rating Scheme rates building energy per ormance.
Large Government buildings are targeted or high
energy and water eciency ratings.
Environmental Upgrade Agreements in commercial
and large residential building retrots allow
equitable sharing o the resulting savings between
landlords, tenants and nanciers, through a
voluntary local council charge.

Thats why NSW boasts world-class research and
development in clean energy, energy eciency and
environmental technology. Its helping lead the charge
towards a greener, cleaner environment. Theres a huge
number o initiatives underway within the State, all to
change the way we source and use energy and
ultimately transorm the way we live.
Take a look at some o the organisations and
initiatives at the oreront o our push towards
a cleaner, greener uture.

The $A100 million Australian Solar Institute [ASI],
based in Newcastle, was launched in 2009 to ast-track
solar research and development.
The ASI aims to drive collaborative, ocused research
and development that will have a major impact on the
eciency and cost-eectiveness o solar technologies.
It will also disseminate the results and learnings rom
solar research or the benet o the Australian andglobal solar communities and the Australian public,
and will act as a catalyst to champion Australias
leadership strengths in solar research and development.
To date, the ASI has helped und 13 R&D projects
at a cost o $A44.5 million in the areas o photovoltaics
and concentrating solar thermal.

Cronulla Sewage Treatment Biogas Project
This is a Biogas renewable cogeneration acility
located in Cronulla, NSW. Sewage wastewater is
treated aerobically or anaerobically. The anaerobic
process produces methane, which is collected and
used to generate renewable power to meet
approximately 10 per cent o the power requirements
o the Cronulla Treatment Plant.
Malabar Cogeneration Facility
This acility located in Malabar, NSW uses recovered
heat rom cogeneration to heat raw sewage sludge
eed to digesters. Digested sludge is de-watered and
used or agricultural biosolids. Digester gas is burnt
in engines. The electricity produced is treated as
green power and is consumed onsite or the
sewage treatment plant.
