Dear Reader,
Why Switzerland? – One of the basic reasons that
Bollywood moved over to Switzerland in the mid-
eighties was the unfortunate problem in Kashmir. The
snow-capped locales used in most Hindi films as a
backdrop for blossoming love were soon replaced
with the natural choice – romantic Switzerland.
Switzerland was first used as a location by Indian
film producers in the sixties when legendary direc-
tor, producer and actor Raj Kapoor and producer
and director Shakti Samanta went there for the
first time to shoot “Sangam” and “An Evening in
Paris” respectively.
In 2002 famous film director and producer Yash
Chopra received the Swiss Filmfare Award offered
by the Government of Switzerland for his
pioneering role in going to Switzerland since
almost 15 years. Such super hits like “Dilwale
Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge” shot in 1995 are “Made
in Switzerland” by Mr. Chopra. Nowadays, more
than 20 Indian film crews travel to Switzerland
every year.
Another development, which gives me great
satisfaction,is the fact that the Swiss people them-
selves are now taking more and more interest in
Indian Cinema. In 2002, there was a five-month
long exhibition in Zurich titled “The Indian
Cinema and Switzerland. Indian films like “Mon-
soon Wedding” and “Lagaan” have recently
been top films on the Swiss charts! In 2002, in a
special program under the title “Indian Summer”
at the Locarno Film Festival, over 30 Indian films
were shown very successfully. I am very happy
about Switzerland’s association with the Indian
film industry. Besides its natural beauty, my
country offers an excellent infrastructure at very
affordable conditions. I wish you a pleasant and
successful trip to Switzerland.

Dear Readers
God: If I were to grant one wish of urs what would
it be?
Me : please grant me the privilege to be born in
swiss in my next birth!
God: Why is that?
Me: read on!
Well firstly before any Indian fanatic kills me, let
me make it very clear I love India and I am very
happy in here. But given a chance I would love to
be born in Swiss next time !! I realized this after
visitng the place.
What fascinates me most about Swiss is that
some of the most amazing rules which are in
place, a driver in Swiss is not allowed to drive for
more than 12 hrs in a day with a compulsory half
an hour break between every 2 hrs of drive. This
guarantees safety of the driver and the rest of the
ppl! Well the roads ,lush greenery is something
which comes very naturally to the Swiss people.
The country merges with its neighbors ,they don’t
exactly have their own culture or language. Parts
close to Zurich speak German, parts close to
Geneva speak French, and those close to Italy
speak Italian. There is no threat of bombing or any
attack by the neighbors. Doubtfull if these people
are bothered much by any religion and such
philosophy . There is NO poverty, simply because
there are hardly any human beings there and poor
people cant survive in such a costly country. The
working class works only for 5 days a week that
too from 10-5, mind u the country shuts down by
7 30(night life begins for the youth)max.Now just
imagine, waking up every day to see the beautiful
alps from ur window, breathe the pollution free
fresh air, then driving in a super car daily (on
superb roads), without traffic to ur office that gets
over by 5, coming back home blissfully to ur loved
ones! Now you know god! Why I wanna be born
there!

p.s. oh btw! The cows there are also very healthy
and happy, well as long as they are not eaten
away! I wonder if our Indian cows would be jeal-
ous of their Swiss counterparts!

Indian film makers started to travel to Switzerland
much later. Switzerland was as such first
‘discovered’ by Raj Kapoor in “Sangam“ followed
closely by Shakti Samanta way back in the mid
sixties when he shot the famous song “Akele
akele kahan ja rahe ho” starring Shammi Kapoor
and Sharmila Tagore in “An Evening in Paris”.
According to his own admission, even another
shot in the same film supposedly depicting
Niagara Falls, was actually shot at the Rheinfalls
in Switzerland.
Thereafter, it was about fifteen years back when
Yash Chopra ‘rediscovered’ it when he shot his
“Faasle” followed by his other hits like “Chandni”,
“Darr“, “Parampara” and “Dilwale Dulhaniya
Le Jayenge (DDLJ)”. The interesting thing was
Indians’ fascination with the Swiss Cowbells and
the DDLJ factor.
In fact, most outdoor scenes of what is shown
as the village in Punjab in this film, are in reality
shot in Switzerland. It is also rumoured that there
is even a Yash Chopra Lake which is the main
feature in all his films shot there and even the
natives (besides Bollywood circles) refer to it by
that name!
Besides this, there are other factors which
come into consideration from a film maker’s
point of view:
– Conveyance and Transport is the best in Swit-
zerland and No country can match that according
to me. You can take Rail pass ( www.sbb.ch) or
a Bus Pass ( www.BernMobil.ch) . Switzerland
offers you the option to have a Golden Pass to
either travel by Boat,Train, Buses and Trams and
all possible forms of Travel which are the hallmark
of Switzerland.
– Hotels are Many and its easy to explore options
and the best I liked was Hotel Baren Ostermun-
digen - 100 year hotel and very business minded
and services suited to business customers. More
Hotels can be seen in the Zentrum and very near
to ----- Shopping Malls.
– McDonalds, Pizza, Burger King are my favorites
and I used to eat my dinner at an
Indian Restaurant which serves Thali, Chapathi
and my Naan (yummy mmm)
– Besides, Switzerland is
after all a Europe in miniature
and the cows of Switzerland
are pretty, healthy and graze all
over the hills from bustling
cities to serene country-side
and all within short and
easily accessible distances
from each other.
The Indian film industry and Switzerland:a long lasting love story.
From the beginning of the 20th century, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenga has carved so many beautiful pictures of Switzerland in our mind and Swiss Cowbell is one of them. One only wishes that time stands still when visiting such a lovely place.And Switzerland has been a subject of curiosity, interest and aspiration, from the time I saw a movie called ‘Darr’. My attraction towards both Switzerland and Juhi Chawla made me research a lot about them, and till then my computer had either Juhi or Switzerland as the wallpapers.

experience.
The Swiss Government is encouraging and
promoting film shootings in Switzerland through
“Film Location Switzerland” a government organ-
isation offering logistical support to film producers
from abroad. Furthermore, the Consulate
General of Switzerland in Mumbai, in close col-
laboration with Switzerland Tourism – the official
tourism arm of the Swiss Federal Governemnt,
hold a number of events in India. In 1999 Mr.
Shakti Samanta and Mr. Yash Chopra were felici-
tated for being ‘loyal friends’ of Switzerland
with a citattion honoring them as “Honorary
Guests for Life”, by Mr. Marco Hartmann, then
President of Switzerland Tourism. As recently as
in 2002, Mr. Yash Chopra was presented the
Swiss Filmfare Award sponsored by Presence
Switzerland, an institution of the Swiss Govern-
ment, for playing a pioneering role in shooting
Hindi films in Switzerland over the past 20 years.
What a lot Yash Chopra has done for Swiss tour-
ism!! I also came to know that there is a special
tour operated from India which takes people to all
the spots where Yash Chopra’s films have been
shot!! AMAZING!!
I could not get Dev Anand and his beautiful song
“Phoolon ke rang se, dil ki kalam se, tujhko likhi
roz paati,”(with the colour of the flowers, with the
pen of my heart,I write a letter to you everyday)
out of my mind. If I remember correctly, it was
sung in a train in Switzerland, in the movie Prem
Pujari. The scene from that film, of those exquisite
windows, full of flowers had been permanently
etched on my mind. I was delighted to see that

very scene with my own eyes, after almost
forty years of that film! Nothing seemed to have
changed!
When one reaches the top of Mount Titlis in a
cable car with the green plain below and music of
the cow bells coming through, there is a flood of
Indians that you can see! Right at the tip there is
a big platform and lo and behold what do I find? A
huuuuuge cut out of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in
the film DDLJ. I was simply amazed!
As said in the beginning, the chirping of birds in the
garden and the whiff of alpine air are so refreshing
that I could live here forever, if I had a choice.
There are not only many sequences of Indian
films made in Switzerland over the years, but the
Swiss people themselves are taking more and
more interest in Indian Cinema. How else does
one qualify the success of “Monsoon Wedding”
and “Lagaan” being top films on the Swiss charts?
And all this in a country with a very minuscule NRI
population!
In fact, “Lagaan” made such an impact at the
Locarno International Film Festival 2001 – besides
winning the “Public’s Choice Award” – that
in 2002 the festival’s organising committee de-
cided to host a special program, under the title
“Indian Summer”. We are convinced the future
looks sunny and bright, just like an “Indian Sum-
mer” in Switzerland!
There is a perception that Switzerland is a picture-
postcard country but the postage is expensive.
It is very hard for non Swiss in this country to
integrate and survive, they say. It is for the very
reason that it is very hard to live so perfectly like
the Swiss. It is an obsession that does not exist
elsewhere, I must say on perfection and peace.
I am glad they have maintained a culture of their
own order while I come from a country of its own
chaos and disorder. I looked up in the sky to
thank the god for giving me the opportunity to visit
this heavenly place.

I had heard so much about the amazing beauty of
Switzerland, that I was secretly not wanting to see
it. I did not want the imaginary picture of Switzer-
land that I had in my mind, destroyed. My fears
however were unfounded. As soon as we moved
into Switzerland, my eyes, my mind, my whole
being was stupefied. This place was so unimagin-
ably beautiful. It was more pristine, picturesque
and pleasing to the eye than the picture that I
had in my mind. So much of beauty, calm, peace,
colour, cows, in one place was simply amazing.
The cows of Switzerland are pretty, healthy,and
graze all over the hills. The music of their bells is
Switzerland: heaven on earth for Indian film makers.
Azure skies, Grey mountains, Snow capped peaks, flowers in all colors, Yellow flowers and lush green fields, snow, jersey cows; clear lakes, panoramic views, waterfalls, rivers flowing by; hiking trails, biking trails, skiing trails, cable cars, fu-niculars; French, Italian and German…well, ladies and gentlemen, that is Switzer-land for you.

beautiful. Reminded me of the cow bells of India,
and the sound of bells when the cows are return-
ing home at dusk. In Switzerland one can buy
beautiful souvenirs of these bells.
Nature has gifted beauty to this place in
abundance. There was an all pervading feeling
of peace, tranquillity, cleanliness, beauty and
the bounties of nature, which I have never felt
anywhere else. The place exudes serenity, calm
and is extremely beautiful. One feels peace from
within. Actually, I think that Switzerland is the
most beautiful place that I have seen on earth!
I have spent a lot of time in Kashmir too. The
beauty there also is out of the world. Yet, to my
mind the sheer calmness, quiet, and tranquil
feeling that I felt in Switzerland made it feel like
heaven on earth!
Walking along Lake Lucerne is like walking on a
romantic beach. I felt like a ‘king in heaven’ lazing
in the sun of the first class deck with panoramic
views of rising snow clad peaks. The city of Lu-
cerne resembled a story book setting of fairy tales
with beautiful church spires, castles, and green
meadows for as far as the eyes could see.
I had fallen with love with the lovely city of
‘Interlaken’. It was the love at first sight. Earlier,
yesterday, while traversing from Lucerne to Inter-
laken, it was like being transported to heaven to
meet the first love. The transport of film crew and
material can be arranged easily by coach or by
public transport.
In addition to the beauties of nature and the infra-
structure, other good reasons (besides the many
suggested before) argue for Switzerland
as a film location:
– Swiss chocolates, Swiss watches, Swiss dairy
products, Swiss cheese, Swiss knives all are well
stocked all over the place.
– The place is famous for immense quality of milk
production and Cartier watch production facility.

– The meadows, the hills, the lakes,the moun-
tains are bewitching. I did not want to look any-
where except outside, and etch the entire place in
my mind for ever.
– Lucerne is near a huge lake. There is a prom-
enade around the lake. Beautiful houses on the
other side of the lake are spread out all over the
mountain. They are not cluttered up. There is a lot
of green, lot of beautiful flowers on every window
sill and the all pervading calmness of peace and
serenity in the town.
– There is a glacier cave, which is softly lit with
LED lights. Various national anthems are pre re-
corded and one can choose to play here. So you
could hear the Indian and Chinese anthem played
several times indicating the multitude presence of
these two nationalities.

Organising a film shoot abroad is a complicated business. You need to importequipment, materials and personnel to a foreign country and this inevitablyinvolves a certain amount of bureaucracy. This is another area where choosingSwitzerland can make life that decisive bit easier. We are fully aware of theproblems that can arise and go out of our way to take the load of your shoulders.Following a few simple but necessary guidelines will make the entireprocess run more smoothly.
Adherence to the Code
The Code will apply in all circumstances. Neither
expedience, the wishes of Movie Stars or those of
any other party are reasons for deviation from the
Code. Counteracting a real or perceived competi-
tive disadvantage is not an acceptable reason
for violation of the Code nor is the opportunity
to generate incremental revenues or profits. The
Code defines the way Switzerland does business.
The Firm monitors conformity of Switzerland’s
policy framework with the principles and stan-
dards of the Code.
The Code is subject to regular reviews. Movie
Stars will be notified of any modifications and
additions to the Code. Switzerland and its Busi-
ness Divisions have issued, and will issue from
time to time, more specific policies, principles
and procedures (including regional or local codes
of conduct) to implement our fundamental values
and to facilitate the application and enforcement
of the Code while reflecting the specific require-
ments of a particular business division, business
area or jurisdiction.
Switzerland requires its Movie Stars to certify that
their actions and decisions are in compliance with
the Code on an annual basis, and demonstration
of behaviour consistent with the Code will const-
tute part of each Movie Stars’s annual perfor-
mance evaluation. Violations of the
standards in this Code may result in disciplinary
proceedings, up to and including dismissal.
Customs Regulations
The temporary import of cinematography material
such as cameras, negative film rolls and other
technical material falls under the international
Customs Convention of 6 December 1961. India
as well as Switzerland have both adopted this
Convention. The basic rules covered by the said
Convention are that items imported under the
scheme have to be re-exported within a given
period of time.
Duty-free temporary import of said material is
granted upon presentation of a ATA Carnet, an
internationally recognised customs document
which is valid for one year from the date of issue.
In India, ATA Carnets are issued by FICCI (Federa-
tion of Indian Chambers of Commerce and
Industries). In Mumbai, the Indian Merchants’
Chamber (IMC) is responsible for the issuance of
the ATA Carnet. Furthermore, ATA Carnets have
to be endorsed by the Indian Customs authorities.

Movie Star confidentiality
On 13 March, Switzerland declared that it
will adopt the OECD standards regarding the
exchange of information upon request in tax
matters. It is a global standard, recently also
adopted by all major offshore financial centers,
including Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg,
Liechtenstein and Monaco. The protection of the
legitimate right to privacy of our movie stars will
remain intact.
Switzerland’s position
The protection of the legitimate right to privacy of
our movie stars will remain intact - as declared by
the Swiss Government. Switzerland emphatically
supports this position.
Switzerland is adopting an emerging global
standard. Switzerland repeatedly said that a
“level-playing field” with other financial centers is
paramount.
Switzerland has declared that it will not adopt the
automatic exchange of information nor allow for
unspecific “fishing expeditions” by foreign authori-
ties. It will permit the exchange of information
with other countries in individual cases where a
specific and justified request has been made.
This is a political and legislative process that
reflects the Swiss Federal Council’s intention to
improve cooperation with other governments in
combating tax offenses and to initiate a dialogue
with non-EU and non-EFTA countries concerning
taxation of interest income.
Movie Stars will respect this framework and sup-
port Switzerland’s intentions.
Alternative Strategies
Generally speaking, alternative investment
strategies are strategies other than those used in
traditional long-only stock and bond investing and
are intended to afford professional movie stars
greater flexibility to manage money in any market
environment. A professional movie star can use
these and other techniques to seek to modify
market exposure and create portfolio
characteristics that may be desirable for certain
clients.

and delivered, they will be charged, whether
used or not!
In the entertainment service industry usually 50%
of the total contract sum is payable when placing
a firm order. The remaining 50% falls due before
shooting starts.

Traveling in Bern is like ‘singing a song’ and a mix
of bus, trams; ferries are available to all destina-
tions.
As we entered the station, a train for Bern left!! A
wait at any other station would have hurt but not
here! There were hardly half a dozen movie stars
and weather was very pleasant. We admired the
dedication of people as one person with cleaning
gear was busy cleaning the station, though it was
already sparkling clean! It is no surprise that the
entire country looks so well kept.
On the way back, we hiked through the greenery
of Switzerland till the Trummelbach falls. That
was another memorable walk. It so reminded us
of the hindi films back home, the yellow flowers
in the green fields, the slanting roof houses that
were straight out of fairy tales, scenic moun-
tains all around, waterfalls, a river flowing all the
way…..it was the best ever!!
As we ascended the cable car the panorama
changed from green to white. Everywhere we
looked was pristine whiteness.
We were awestruck with the crowd at Lugano.
Everyone seemed so posh…almost everyone was
sporting Guccis or D&Gs or Guess’s or Versachis.
We poor souls in run down jeans and T-shirts
were quite out of pace in that fashionable city!

– Punctuality is a serious subject in Switzerland
and appointments are expected to be kept.
Trains, buses and boats depart punctually as
per their time-table.
– The Swiss are generally friendly; a local
greeting you expects a return greeting and/or
a smile.
– “Dignity in labour” is a dictum in Switzerland.
Waiters, cleaners, shop assistants, porters, etc.
are looked at with the same respect as other
professionals.
– Switzerland is a law-abiding country. Rules and
regulations are strictly followed with lawbreak-
ers being penalised.
– Discipline is the order of the day in Switzerland.
Expect this truism in queues, at counters, while
crossing roads, boarding and alighting from
public transport, etc.
– Prices in Swiss shops are generally fixed and
bargaining is not possible. Goods once opened
in shops are considered sold.
– The Swiss are very clean and expect all litter to
be disposed off only in the provided garbage
cans. Littering in public places is an offence.
In some places there are different containers
for various types of waste disposal like glass
bottles, aluminium cans, etc. If a location
is used for shooting, it is expected that it
is left in the same condition as before
the shooting.
– Porters are a rarity in Switzerland. One is
expected to carry his/her own bags in hotels,
stations, cabs, coaches etc. In the same vein,
no hostesses will guide you to your table in
Switzerland.
– Tickets for public transport have to be pur-
chased before boarding – especially in trains

– The Swiss generally write the numeral “1” like
the Indian “7” whereas their “7” has the stem
crossed out. Besides, they use a comma to
separate the centimes from the Franc when
prices are written.
– Remember that in Switzerland, shaking your-
head means a “no” and nodding denotes a
“yes”. Swiss often misunderstand Indians in this
respect.
– It is not a common practice to address business
partners by their first names unless invited to
do so.

– For the Indian film groups, transportation is
normally done by coach which are usually ac-
companied by mobile kitchens ready to serve
Indian meals in a jiffy. In fact, this very approach
has been used by major tour operators from India
when they offer not only vegetarian cuisine but
also “jain” meals in Switzerland.
– In Switzerland vegetarian food is easily available
and Indian cuisine is also offered in many restau-
rants and as a catering service.
– Many hotels are specialised in accommodating
the wishes of Indian guests and even
offer special prices.
– I also found to my amusement that in the res-
taurant there were two buffets. One had the usual
European stuff and the other provided typical
Indian food.
– Instructions in the rest rooms are also provided
in Hindi.
– What could one ask more than to see the
Cheese making at La Gruyere and chocolates at
Broc!!

Our trip was planned to visit the best places of Europe – Swiss
and Paris! It was unarguably the best 15 days of my life! We
started out on 21st September 2009, in our Emirates flight to
Zurich! On reaching the Zurich international airport(the airport
seemed very modest for the country ), we finished our baggage
claims etc and stepped out. The first thing I noticed when I
stepped out was a beautiful woman with a pram crossing a
road without even glancing towards her right or left and as
if Bollywood films were mocking at me, a bright red Ferrari
Enzo was speeding towards her, every nerve in my body was
screaming out to her , “hey watch out!!” but to my shock the
car happily stopped few inches away from her (oh and there
was no screeching sound of sudden harsh brakes either) and it
dint bother the woman at all! She crossed the road peacefully
as if the car dint exist (and looked at me as if I was an alien!).
Well I told myself, “welcome to swiss!”- Where pedestrians are
given more importance than the fast moving super cars. That
was the first thing I observed in Switzerland.
We boarded our bus, as we had to go to Bern for our night
stay. We stopped our bus and walked down the cobbled street
of the capital city Bern, which is completely breath taking. The
second observation I made was that oh my god! People here
drive in all those fancy super cars we always hear about! I
saw all of them from Ferrari to Lamborghini,Porsche(all those
NFS cars!) and mind u I even saw our very own Maruti Suzuki
swift cutely making her way through those biggies. The capital
city gives u that European feeling, the picturesque plazas,
youngsters sipping beer on the streets where the cafés are
stretched out to the roads. Then there was the main ingredient
of the European streets- the clock tower! And not to forget the
famous (ok the in-famous) Swiss banks. Well it is very difficult
to figure out what each building stands for as all the buildings
look like a famous monument in itself, carefully decorated with
flowers and swiss flags.I was lost in my world looking at the
plaza when suddenly my mom shakes me and asks me about
our vanity bag! I take time to digest the fact that we lost our
bag? No! it cant happen in Swiss!we are in swiss! No one steals
a bag here! I ask her back, “whats the matter? where is the
bag?” she looks at me and tells me that I had the bag, I look
back at her completely unaware of that fact! Then we both run
around panicking and looking for the bag. It was nowhere to
be seen. Thankfully our passports and flight tickets were with
my dad, but the bag had everything else including our money
60,000 INR (mind u it was converted currency in USD) . We
were devastated and the worst part was we could not exactly
recollect how and where did we lose it. Breaking the news to
my father was the most difficult task(He was on the other side
of the plaza during the bag loss)Another round of searching,
panicking, asking locals continued and finally we had to give
up(the police refused to understand one word of English!). Alas!
We were completely broke on the very first day of our trip even
before reaching our hotel! Now we had 2 options -1) Keep
feeling bad about the money and spoil the rest of the tour 2)
Forget about what happened , borrow some money from the
tour guide and others who were with us and go on with the trip
as if nothing had happened. Thanks to my sooooper dad , he
first calmed down and told the two of us (mom n me) to forget
what happened and to not regret because money comes and
goes , trips like this r rare. That was it, there was no looking
back we enjoyed the trip like everyone else from the second
day onwards.
Keeping all these bad memories behind, next day we set out
to Mt.Titlis , a very beautiful ice clad mountain peak(part of
the Mt.Alps) frequented by skiing enthusiasts and tourists.
The journey to the peak is through a 3 phase breath taking
cable car ride. The last phase is through a rotating cable
car. It leaves any normal nature loving human speechless.
After playing on the ice mountain and having our lunch at an
Indian restaurant (10 000 ft above sea level) right there on
Mt.Titlis(yes ! there is an Indian restaurant on swiss alps! Now
Mr.Yash Chopra has promoted the place so much , its hardly
anything eh?) .After Mt .Titlis , we went to Lucerne , a calm
city with few tourist attractions and best place for shopping
chocolates. Next day we set out to Jungfrojoch(pronounced
as yungfroyoch) , the topmost point of Europe. Now that was
a long journey up the mountain.That was when I observed
something else, the houses!! People in Swiss have beautiful
wooden houses with thatched roofs and decorated window
panes. It gives the whole country that unique ,beautiful
medieval feel to it. Well folks don’t go by the medieval feel, the
houses have shining red Ferraris and such super cars parked
besides them! The country blessed with beauty also has the
best technology in place and its precision is world famous(
read watches and knives)! Well the journey to jungfro is thru a
high class train that takes u to 11,782 feet above sea level, the
top most point in Europe. It was a spectacular feeling to stand
there on the ice clad alps and feel the air pass through you.
Bliss! That evening we toured the Interlaken where even the
street lights are decorated with flowers and flags!
