Swiss film productions are enjoying an ever-

greater resonance again at international film

festivals: they were present at the latest festivals

in Locarno, Montreal, Venice, Amsterdam, Sundance

and Berlin and bore witness to a wealth of creative

diversity, the emergence of new talent and

acknow ledgment of established film makers.

Peter Liechti, for example, was honoured with

the European Film Award – Prix Arte for Best

Documentary Film 2009 – for “The Sound Of

Insects – Record Of A Mummy”.

promotes the presence of Swiss film productions at interna -

tional festivals, supports distribution to cinemas abroad, organises retro spec -

tives and film series all over the world, and provides information on the

entire spectrum of Swiss filmmaking – from short to feature films and

animation to documentary films. “Moving Movies” is the promotion agency’s

new claim and is, by all means, to be taken both literally and figuratively:

films evoke emotions among the viewers, films move people. As the promotion

agency, moves films beyond our border, seeking to stimu-

late a dynamic and keep it in motion. And ultimately, the passion for

film moves our staff members, whose experience, know-how and contacts

facilitate the distribution and promotion of Swiss film productions.

is, with its website www.swissfilms.ch and teams in Zurich

and Geneva, your contact for Swiss films.

SWISS NATIONAL FILM COMMISSION - FLS

It’s a really straightforward thing to shoot a film in Switzer-land! It’s easy to do so because all the conditions have beenput in place to optimize audiovisual projects, including boththe creative and economic aspects. Switzerland offers a largevariety of natural settings and architectural works dating fromdifferent epochs. The climate ranges from the polar cold ofthe everlasting snows in the Alps to the heady Mediterraneantemperatures in the southern regions of the country. Thisdiversity is concentrated within a small land mass traversed bya rapid-access road and rail communications networks. Add tothis the attractive Euro-Swiss Franc exchange rate, the flexibilityof working conditions and the efficiency of the service companies.Switzerland is an open-air studio that offers you numerouseconomic advantages.

The Swiss National Film Commission, “Film Location Switzer-land”, is the official organization in charge of assisting foreignfilmmakers to carry out their film projects in Switzerland. Ithelps to focus interest on our national heritage – natural, artisticand cultural – and encourages cooperation between the Swissaudiovisual industry and foreign production companies.

COPRODUCING WITH SWITZERL AND

9

To be eligible for public funding, a film coproducedbetween Switzerland and another country must beofficially recognized as a Swiss film. The followingrules apply:

• An independent Swiss film producer must be chosen as apartner, who will then apply for public funds.

• Bilateral coproduction agreements exist with Germany,Austria, Canada, France, Italy, Belgium and the Frenchcommunity of Belgium. With the exception of Canada, these agreements cover only films produced for theatricalexhibition. Switzerland is a member of the Europeanconvention for coproductions and by this multilateralconvention is linked to many more European countries. In most cases, the minimal Swiss participation required variesbetween 10% and 20%. If no coproduction agreement isapplicable – as is the case for the USA, for instance – theminimal Swiss participation is 50%.

• The artistic and technical participation (which includesthe hiring of Swiss technicians, assistants and actors)must be proportional to the Swiss financial participation. This condition also applies to postproduction. Since thereare no fixed criteria for the evaluation of the percentage, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

• Once theses conditions have been met, the Swiss coproducercan acquire the official agreement from the Swiss FederalOffice of Culture.

Films officially coproduced with Switzerland haveaccess to the public film funding of the Swiss FederalOffice of Culture.

• Selective public funding sees an independent expertcommittee choose and propose film projects for productionsubsidies. The maximum subsidy per film is 1,5 millionSwiss Francs and cannot exceed 50% of the productioncosts (Swiss part).

• Succès cinéma is a funding program based on a film’ssuccess. For each ticket bought in a Swiss cinema, theSwiss screenwriter, director, producer, distributor andcinema owner gets a bonus which must be reinvested intheir next film project.

• Other funding programs include the annual competition for the Swiss Film Prize Quartz, as well as subsidies for the release of a film or for its participation in aninternational film festival.

VISIONS DU REEL - NYONINTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALDOC OUTLOOK – INTERNATIONAL MARKET April 15 – 21, 2010 / May 5 – 11, 2011Director: Jean PerretRue Juste Olivier 18, CH-1260 Nyon, SwitzerlandTel: +41.22-365.44.55 - Fax: +41.22-365.44.50e-mail: [email protected] - www.visionsdureel.ch

It is comforting to feel the quietness emanated again by the filmsselected for this 16th edition of Visions du Réel. Not that they areslow, oh no, some of them are very fast-moving in the way theytell stories! They convey a different experience which documen-tary filmmakers share with their spectators when they - film-makers - take time to cast their gaze and focus their attention onthe faces, landscapes, voices and din of the world. This film genreis comforting when the real world takes shape thus in its excitingcomplexity. It is exhilarating to share with the audiences these visions that reflectthe extraordinary diversity of genres, scripts and viewpoints.Nearly 2,000 films have been viewed by the members of the Work-ing Group, which is made up of specialists hired to spot the moststriking films, to write the texts of the Catalogue and to moder-ate debates and meetings. At a time when the conditions underwhich films made by independent directors can assert their iden-tity are deteriorating in terms of production and distribution, the2010 Programme is an exemplary illustration of fierce and stub-born resistance to run-of-the-mill audiovisual fare.It is impressive for us to have taken the decision to step downfrom the Management of Visions du Réel this year when we canshare in the extraordinary success that we feel entitled to claim. At the same time we know we owe that success to the filmmak-ers and producers and film professionals and public- and private-sector financial partners and film-goers and partners of all cultures, along with other accomplices, who have placed their trust in usfor 16 years. To them we say, quite simply and with true grati-tude, thank you.It is reassuring that the Nyon International Film Festival is thisyear opening a new film theatre for its viewers, since the futureis theirs. Tomorrow a new director will be able to give these Visionsthe momentum they need to continue this adventure: to usher inthe privileged era of a Visions du Réel entirely committed todepicting the radiant beauty and convulsive unsightliness of aworld in search of authentic narratives.
