Brandon Burgess has guided ION Media Networks’ growth since 2006. Under hisleadership, ION has emerged as a successful independent U.S. television company. Hespearheaded the branding and programming turnaround of its flagship network, IONTelevision, making it a top 15 U.S. entertainment TV destination in record time.

Burgess has also championed ION’s launch of special interest networks, including qubo,an education-oriented channel for children, and ION Life, a channel dedicated to activelifestyles. He initiated the Open Mobile Video Coalition among leading UHV TVspectrum owners, to focus on wireless and next-generation television innovation.

Previously, Burgess was the head of Business Development and Strategy forNBCUniversal, where he was credited with evolving the NBC broadcast networkinto a diversified global multimedia company, culminating in NBC‘s acquisition ofUniversal Entertainment. In prior positions, Burgess worked in Corporate Strategyfor PepsiCo and in Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs.

Raised and educated in Germany and the United States, Burgess is bilingual and agraduate of the European Business School and the Wharton School of the Universityof Pennsylvania. He and his wife Saira enjoy spending time with their two youngchildren, Elsa and Benjamin.



The Youth of the Year Award has an esteemed history. First called “The Corporal Raul OrtaAward,” it was named for a young man who lived at St.Vincent’s from 1959 until 1963. Raulrejoined the United States Marine Corps in 1965 and was killed in action in Vietnam onFebruary 1, 1967, one month before he was to terminate his tour of duty. He was not quite 22years old. In commemoration of Raul’s sacrifice for his county, the Board of St.Vincent’sunanimously voted to designate an annual award for a senior resident of St.Vincent’s Servicesdeemed most worthy of such an honor. All the recipients listed below have distinguishedthemselves in one capacity or another.We are now proud of their association with St.Vincent’s.

Youth of theYear Awards



St.Vincent’s is honored to present the 2012Youth of theYear Award to Damien for hisextraordinary personal transformation, academic accomplishment and unyielding desire tosucceed. Damien’s journey of overcoming adversity makes him a role model for other foster youthwho are seeking hope. Damien was born and raised in Brooklyn as the youngest of five siblings.From an early age, his family encouraged him to excel academically by putting an emphasis oneducation.They also inspired him to dream. Damien’s grandmother nicknamed him “Doc”because she wanted him to become a doctor.While Damien still carries his childhood nickname,he now dreams of becoming an entrepreneur instead of pursuing medicine. Currently, Damien is asophomore at LaGuardia Community College, majoring in Business Management.

Damien’s road to college was a tumultuous one as he had to face many obstacles along the way.When he was a young boy, Damien was introduced to the foster care system as his both motherand grandmother had fallen victim to drug addiction and were unable to care for him or hisbrothers and sisters. For a long time, Damien faced his challenges by keeping them bottled upinside.The anger of not living with his family led to school fights; inconsistent grades and atremendous loss of hope.“We ran away a lot.We wanted to live with our family, and anything less,no matter how good, was not enough at the time.”

However, once he and his brother were old enough to enter a St.Vincent’s Group Home, his lifetook a turn for the better.“The house was unlike anything I had ever experienced.We had strictrules and tutoring schedules, but we had a lot of fun as well. I liked living with my two brothers,and I bonded with the staff and my peers. It became a family.” Damien also confronted his battlewith anger by learning how to meditate through St.Vincent’s Peace Project.The Peace Projecttaught the youth how to respect different cultures by exploring their traditions and philosophies.Because of the skills that Damien acquired in the Group Home as well as the workshops andinitiatives that he attended at St.Vincent’s, he was able to propel himself forward. By receiving theright amount of support, Damien graduated from high school on time, which is one of theaccomplishments that he is most proud of achieving in addition to getting accepted into college.“Some people thought I couldn’t do. But here at St.Vincent’s, they had faith in me.They believedthat I could do it so I started to believe too.And now, look. I’m in my second year of college.”

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to St.Vincent’s Services 2012 Annual Dinner.

My transition to the head of this agency has completed a three-year planning process initiated by theSt.Vincent’s Board when I became the operational partner to Rev. Msgr. Robert M. Harris, ouroutgoing President and CEO.As I go forward, I hope in some small way to be able to replicate theremarkable legacy of accomplishment that characterized the agency under Msgr. Harris’s leadership.

At St.Vincent’s, we transform lives characterized by poverty and neglect into bright, hopeful futures.We focus on the whole child, allowing each young person to develop to his or her full potential.Wework hard to ensure that when our children leave us, they are equipped with marketable skills thatwill enable them to support themselves for the rest of their lives.

Our signature educational initiative – the American Dream Program – fulfills this ambitious goal byensuring that all young people who are accepted into a program of higher education (includingcollege, technology or trade programs, vocational training, etc.) will be able to attend their choseninstitution until they graduate. Since our young people overwhelmingly lack the supports and “safetynets” of a child who has grown up in a traditional family structure, it goes without saying that withoutthis crucial source of support their goals of higher education and self-sufficiency would truly belittle more than a dream.

Our Annual Dinner gives us the chance to celebrate our achievements while we raise funds for ourwork with the vulnerable youth and families who come to us in need. Because of you, our youngpeople will have a better shot at their hopes and ambitions.

Through initiatives such as the American Dream Program, we empower our youth to envision afuture that includes a college education, a fulfilling career, financial stability, and full personaldevelopment. We couldn’t help these boys and girls achieve their dreams without the caringgenerosity of our donors. In this light, we are extraordinarily grateful for your belief in our work.

Founded in 1869 as a refuge for homeless Brooklynnewsboys, today St. Vincent’s Services (SVS) is afull-service agency providing comprehensivesupport for young people and their foster, birth, andadoptive families in an atmosphere of inclusivenessand caring. SVS programs enjoy a reputation forexcellence and are continuously evolving to meetthe changing needs of NewYork City’s families.

“We serve needy children and their families with serviceswhich support, supplement, or substitute for the healing,nurturing, and developing relationships ideally found infamily life.” This mission remains unchanged as ourprograms grow to meet the complex needs of NewYork City’s children and families. SVS’s importantservices to our community include:

• SVS provides support and care for around 1,000of the NewYork City’s most vulnerable childrenannually, including over 600 in foster familyhomes;

• Special care programs include Positive CaringServices for children with medically fragileconditions, Youth Residential Services, andDevelopmentally Disabled Services;

• Our outpatient Mental Health Clinic hosts21,000 visits per year, comprised of both SVSchildren and families as well as clients from thesurrounding community;

• The Behavioral Health Services Program helpsfamilies reunite with children who are in fostercare due to addiction problems, the cause behind80% of children in foster care.

With these services, SVS affects 10,000 New YorkCity lives annually, including foster, birth, andadoptive families, as well as other citizens who seekhelp at our facilities. This is made possible throughthe work of our team of 400 full-time and 50part-time staff, along with 50 caring volunteers.

Our Family Foster Care and AdoptiveServices — one of the largest programs of its typein New York City — offers adoption andpost-adoptive services as well as intensive casemanagement and support services for our youngpeople and their foster and birth families. Our goalis to find permanent homes for our youth, placingapproximately 100 children in permanent adoptivehomes each year. SVS has been rated “outstanding”by the Administration for Children’s Services(ACS) for our number of successful adoptions. OurSpecialized Preventive Services initiative providesadditional services to prevent foster care,particularly for families with a child at risk, ofteninvolving a special medical condition and/or adevelopmental disability.

Our Youth Residential Services, rated“excellent” by the ACS, offers group residences inQueens and Staten Island where dedicatedaround-the-clock staff help young people achievestability and become healthy, active members oftheir home and community. YRS includes apermanency planning unit to secure familyconnections for adolescents, ensuring that theseyoung people have access to housing, educationand/or employment when they leave our care.Based onYRS’ track record, this area has expandedto special residences and support for boys and girlsages 13-18 with behavioral and/or emotional needspreventing them from residing in a family setting.Further, SVS was awarded a program to provide safehousing and placement for youth from New YorkCity’s juvenile justice system, along with services tohelp these youth and their families secure a betterfuture in their communities.

Our Behavioral Health Services incorporate fiveoutpatient mental health clinics that provide

comprehensive services to both SVS clients and thegeneral public, including crisis intervention,individual, family, and group psychotherapy.Teamsof psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers andother specialists conduct assessments and developindividualized treatment plans. In the area ofaddiction treatment, our Outpatient ChemicalDependence Treatment Program helps clients stopusing mood-altering substances, strengthen familyand social relationships, develop a sober supportnetwork in their communities, upgrade theireducational and vocational skills and ultimatelybecome self-reliant.

Our Positive Caring Services program providescare and support for medically fragile infants andchildren facing complex conditions, includingHIV/AIDS, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, brittle bonesyndrome,and autism.PCS offers important assistanceto families, enhancing their ability to cope with theseconditions affecting their children. St. Vincent’sMedical Treatment Center operates a full pediatricand adolescent clinic with specialties in neurology andpediatric and infectious diseases, providing medicalcare to children and adolescents. The Center alsoprovides training for foster and adoptive parents onhow to deal with the complex medical needs of thosechildren.This training enables parents to perform athome many of the specialized treatments theirchildren need, enhancing health and comfort andavoiding lengthy and repeated hospitalizations for theyoungsters.

Our Developmentally Disabled Servicesmaintain community residences where profoundlydisabled adults can live in supportive “family style”housing. SVS provides these residents withcomfortable living conditions, quality medical careand physical therapy. Weekly life skills workshops

provide them with support enabling them to carefor themselves to the best of their individualabilities, while recreational and cultural outingsallow them to take part in enjoyable activities withtheir peers.

Our Education and Empowerment programsare known for the extra effort to ensure thatour youth overcome challenges and prepare forbright futures:

Our signature American Dream Program (ADP)provides promising young collegians tutoring,counseling, tuition assistance, as well as roomand board, and health insurance through graduation— even past the age of 21 when all government supportceases.

The Pathways to the American Dream Program(PAD) extends such educational focus to a youngerage group, supporting 9th-11th graders attendingNew York City public schools, improving theireducational outcomes, focusing on “on time”graduation and preparing them for entering collegeor postsecondary school.

The SMART Girls program focuses specifically onhelping girls overcome emotional and personaltraumas and build lives based on safety,security, and self-sufficiency. We offer themcharacter-building interventions, including artisticself-expression, Book Clubs focused on women’sissues in various cultures, as well as academicmentoring.

Our Education and Empowerment programsprovide the young people of SVS with the types ofsupport that will help them achieve academically,personally and professionally, gain self-sufficiencyand become productive members and leaders intheir communities.

Through our signature American Dream Program (ADP), promising

young collegians are provided with tuition assistance, tutoring, and

counseling, as well as room and board,health insurance, and incidental

living expenses through graduation.The ADP is at the forefront of

our efforts to ensure that when our children leave us, they do so with

marketable skills which will allow them to support themselves for the

rest of their lives.The following pages of the 2012 American Dream

ProgramYearbook document the challenges and triumphs our young

collegians have experienced in their pursuit of a college education.



JuneshaAs many teenagers try to blend in with the crowd, Junesha does the exact opposite. She followsher heart,which seperated her from the street lifestyle that many of her peers were involved inand led her to study nursing at Medgar Evers College.With a courseload of five classes, thisdetermined young woman has not missed a beat since the first day of class.

Having been with St.Vincent’s Services since she was eleven years old, Junesha is a firm believerthat loyalty is everything.“Loyalty isn’t just staying true to the people who you love. I’ve learnedthat you have to stay loyal to yourself.” She believes that everyone has a moral compass, and shetries to adhere by hers no matter how hard it may be.Wise beyond her years, the ambitious,

red-headed college freshman admits that her strength comes from watching people around her make “not the best”decisions. Before she figured out what she wanted for herself, she knew what she did not want.“My mother had me whenshe was my age now.That’s too young. She never finished school,” says the eighteen-year old youth. Junesha knew lifewasn’t going to be easy, but with the help of St.Vincent’s in addition to her own motivation, she realized that she couldaccomplish anything that she set her mind to do.

Her biggest accomplishment thus far has been graduating from high school. When asked if there was one particular personwho inspires her, she does not hesistate before saying in a low but confident voice,“Me.”

Although Junesha acknowledges that there have been people along the way who have made a difference, she says,“St.Vincent’s has taught me to be self-efficient. I inspire myself.What I’ve been through, what I’ve seen and what I haveaccomplished is what gets me through the day. I am the only person who can make changes in my life.” Like her aunts andcousins who are involved in medical professions, Junesha aspires to become a nurse.“I want to help people. It doesn’t matterif I help children or adults. I just want to give back to people who need it.”

KeturahWhen a St.Vincent’s foster care crisis counselor gave Keturah a book for her birthday, she saidthank you, but her gratitude only came after giving it a good read.“At first, I couldn’t believe thatI was getting just a book for my birthday. But later, I realized it was the best gift I’d ever beengiven,” says the college freshman.

She felt as if the memoir,A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown was speaking directly to her.Comingfrom a background filled with trauma, she could relate to the protagonist’s whirlwind life. Fivehigh schools in four years, Keturah struggled to maintain consistency in her academic career andeventually dropped out. However, she knew that she had to turn her life around. Obtaining her

GED was the next step.While many of her peers struggled with the exam, she passed on her first try. Now, she just needed toget into college.Keturah turned to St.Vincent’s, and they provided guidance on the college admission process.Today, she attendsKingsborough Community College with career aspirations of becoming a high school English teacher.“I know what it feelslike to struggle; to feel pain, but at the end of the day, if you believe in yourself, you can make it to wherever you want to go.”

Like Cupcake Brown who is a practicing lawyer, author and motivational speaker, Keturah hopes to use her own story of trialsand tribulations as personal motivation to accomplish all of her dreams.“People have a hard time of understanding what I’vebeen through,” says the old soul,“but I survived, and now I’m trying to do something better with my life.”

Having filled countless journals over the years, today, the young poet continues to pick up her notebook and jot downwhatever she feels in her heart. Her passion for poetry has been burning for years, and she hopes to bring this love into theclassroom one day.



DayquwanAt 14 years old, Dayquwan found a home at St.Vincent’s Services’ Foster Care. Four years later,he is a college freshman at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Only 19 years old,this young man knows exactly what it is going to take to accomplish his dream of becoming aparamedic.“I have to work hard. College is fun, but right now I’m learning how to balance mysocial life and my studies.When it comes down to it, school comes first.As long as I focus on myeducation, I can accomplish whatever I choose.”

However, this college freshman wasn’t always so determined.“I used to lack focus and didn’tknow how to achieve it,” he says. Dayquwan credits his aunt for pushing him to do something

with his day.“I used to sleep in for no reason until my aunt started forcing me to do chores and be productive. I started torealize how much time I had been wasting and was determined to do something about it.”With the help of St.Vincent’s, theyoung man started thinking about his interests.“I always liked science. I realized that I was good at it when I started gettingperfect scores on tests in ninth grade.” It wasn’t until his support systems at SVS and at home urged him to pursue hispassion for science that he decided to apply to college. Now, he attends class Monday through Friday with a completecourseload. Dayquwan no longer relies on his photographic memory to pass a class. He puts several hours of studying aweek, so that he can achieve at least a B+ in each course.

Like Richard Wright, the author of his recent favorite book Black Boy, Dayquwan has pulled himself up by the bootstraps insearch of a brighter future for himself and his family. He hopes to be an inspiration to his five brothers and two sisters byfinishing college; being completely independent and being a good person to others.

Sha Rhonda“Some people never gave up on me. My aunt, high school teachers and St.Vincent’scaseworkers were always there for me,” says Sha Rhonda, a 21-year old college sophmore atKingsborough Community College.With aspirations to become a broadcaster, host and model,Sha Ronda is currently pursuing a degree in Broadcast Technology and Management. In fiveyears, she sees herself working at a top network. Even though she knows that the competition inthis career is steep, Sha Rhonda feels that she is her biggest competition and always strives toimprove herself.

This intelligent young woman came into SVS foster care when she was 12 years old. By the ageof 14, she was attending SVS Independent Living Workshops, which prepared her for the responsibilities of adulthood.Today, as she begins to age out of the foster care system, Sha Rhonda feels that she is ready to face the world on her own.

While she has encountered many difficulties in life, such as losing her brother to a tragic accident in recent years, ShaRhonda uses personal challenges as motivators.“There’s nothing like facing the worst, and knowing that you have madeit through.”

She is also greatly motivated by her dreams of a better life for herself and for her young son, Xavier.“Tunnel vision” is howSha Ronda drives her passion for success.“I take care of my son. I work. I go to school. I do what I have to do to besuccessful.”This semester, she plans on achieving a 3.75 or higher in all of her classes, while being the best mother that shecan be.As she balances her education, her part-time job as a sales clerk and raising a child, Sha Rhonda is fearlessly pushingher way to the top.

VernonicaFours years ago,Veronica, a foster care youth, found herself at a crossroads. She was fifteen,pregnant and scared, but she made a choice. She chose life.Today, her face lights up when shetalks about her daughter, Johaily.“She’s a smart little girl,” she says as about her inquisitivedaughter who keeps her on her toes daily with a load of questions and energy. Before she gavebirth,Veronica admits to being somewhat of a “know-it-all” teenager. She wanted to do whatevershe felt like doing and did not think twice about consequences. Now, that has all changed.At 19,Veronica has started college at NewYork City College of Technology. Even though she wassidetracked in school, she realized the importance of obtaining an education for a better life.This

year, with the encouragement of St.Vincent’s , she was determined to get her G.E.D.At first, she was skeptical about herabilities, but she studied hard and passed on her first try. From that experience, she learned that with effort and determination,anything was possible.When she sees teenage girls acting out like she had done in earlier years, she tries to lend a helpinghand and serve as a positive influence.“I’m not sure what I want to do with my life yet, but I would like to do something thatinvolves helping kids.”An avid reader, this college student engrosses herself in the latest literary and commercial hits.While she enjoys readingsuspense, romance and mystery, she is open to reading anything that captures her attention in the first few chapters. Sheparticularly likes books with strong female heroines, such as the first book of the Hunger Games series. “It sends a goodmessage to young girls.”“I wish teenagers would enjoy their childhood, while it lasts.There’s plenty of time for everything else that comes with beingan adult. I always tell teens that there’s no easy way out.You think there is, but there isn’t.There’s just the people who make it,and the people who don’t. Hard work is important,”Veronica says.

Perhaps, there is a budding social worker in our midst.

BrandiiBrandii, a young woman of twenty has faced one of the most heart-wrenching challenges in life,the passing of a parent.As she keeps her mother’s memory in the forefront of her mind, Brandiikeeps moving forward and never looks back. In addition to her late mother, numerous femalerole models from her St.Vincent’s family to her biological family have inspired her to puteducation as her top priority.

With only three and a half semesters to go, this college junior excitedly awaits completingschool and becoming fully independent.“I’m not grown until I have my own.That’s somethingthat I’ve always felt. Right now, I work part-time and go to school, but I am still working on

self-efficiency. St.Vincent’s have been in my life for three years. I don’t know what I’d do without them.They’ve beenhelping me out with college as I get my life together.” From becoming a firefighter, joining marines to modeling, it’s thesky’s the limit for Brandii.As a criminal justice major at Mollege College, she does not limit herself to one specific careerpath. Instead, she is open to all of the possibilities that life may bring.“I have too many interests, and with today’s economy, Ithink it is important to be flexible when it comes to choosing a career.”

With her high-waisted pants and bright orange lipstick, her creativity is evident as she discusses her passion for music,fashion and writing poetry.“Artistic expression is important to me. It’s who I am,” Brandii says.“Whether it’s choosing acombination of patterns for an outfit, listening to a Bob Marley song or writing down my thoughts, it all helps me getthrough the day.”

One day, after college, Brandii dreams of leaving NewYork and relocating in another part of the country, or even outside ofthe States. She hopes to live in a new environment; experience different people and enjoy her future career that her journeywill have led her to.





DiannaNo stranger to hard work, Dianna has been interning steadily for the past three years at the EastNewYork Farmer’s Market, which seeks to unlock the potential of East NewYork youththrough engaging them in different aspects of running of a ½ acre organic farm.Through theinternship, Dianna has been able to participate as a leader in her community as she continues tolearn about the environment, nutrition, health, community and economic development, andsocial justice.

Only having been with St.Vincent’s foster care for one year and half, Dianna is fairly new to theSVS family.Although she is still familiarizing herself with all of the programs that St.Vincent’s

has to offer, she has already bonded with staff who have encouraged her to pursue her ambition.

“SVS staff motivated me. I graduated high school on time. I started college right away without having to take time off. I’mproud of myself for that,” says the Guyana native.“My high school prom was a great time. I shared a limo with friends anddidn’t worry about anything that night. It was amazing. But, now I’m ready to focus.”

The college freshman states that she does not just want a “job.” She wants a career.When asked to share words of movitationto someone who may want to be where she is today, the assertive young woman thinks for a minute and sighs.“I’d tell themto look around. Look at the adults that they know.At some point, you have to ask yourself,‘do I want to live paycheck topaycheck, or do I want to be comfortable with a house, a car and have some sort of stability?’”

Because she likes children, loves science and would like to help people, she has chosen the pre-med track. Dianna knowsthat nothing worth having is easy to obtain, so she is gearing herself up for a rigorous courseload with a strict studyingschedule; a loud alarm clock for early classes and enough dedication to pull herself through the hard times. One day, shehopes to treat and cure children and serve as a mentor for young women.

MelquanAt his high school graduation, Melquan was surrounded by his St.Vincent’s support system,recognizing that he had come a long way since he first entered foster care. Since then, he hadcontinued to grow and prosper. Now, the college sophomore says,“I used have a lot of angerinside of me, but I have since learned to let it go.”While he had always wanted to go to college,St.Vincent’s supplied him with the tools to get there.Whether it was providing tutorialassistance to maintain his grades; helping deciphering his financial aid package or reminding himthat he had the smarts to go all the way, SVS never gave up on Melquan.Through providing himwith unconditional support and love, he can finally see himself through the eyes of SVS andrecognize his full potential.

Attending Fingerlakes Community College has provided new challenges for the young man as it is hours away from thehome that he has in Brooklyn.Although Melquan maintains a strong relationship with his SVS family and caseworkers, lifeaway from home has allowed Melquan to develop fundamentally on his own as he finds out where his true priorities lie. Sincehis freshman year, he has grown to further understand the link between education and independence and has decided to puthis all into succeeding academically.“Going away to school was a good decision. In a short time, I’ve matured and learned alot about myself.” Because he is assertive, inquisitive and community-driven, he has taken a liking to current affairs.With hisinterests in politics, community and social justice, he has chosen political science as his current academic focus.

As Melquan grows into a strong confident man, he is consistently keeping up with his classes; searching for viable careeroptions and staying steadfast with his goal of graduating on time.





ShanidaShanida lives by her favorite quote.“Broaden your horizons, and explore everything that interestsyou. In time, you will find what makes you happy.”A college senior, Shanida believes that she hasfinally found a great source of joy in her life.With dreams of becoming a social worker, she aspiresto change lives of those who need help like she once did years ago.When she was a young girl,her mother was unable to care for her due to severe mental illness. Consequently, she landed intocare at St.Vincent’s. In good hands, Shanida was able to form tight-knit bonds with the staff.Today, Shanida credits one social worker, in particular, who held her hand during through roughtimes and has served as a strong role model for the past eight years.

Ever since she’s been with SVS, Shanida has participated in several initiatives, such as the American Dream Program, theYouth Leadership Academy and many more.As these initiatives provided practical and emotional support, they prepared herto succeed in high school, college and her personal life. Shanida’s strong work ethic remains unmatched. In addition tomaintaining a full-time school coursework and part-time work schedule, she assists as a peer mentor and tutor for SVS’sSMART Girls and other programs designed to help SVS high school youth. Shanida wants to show youth that nothing isout the question when it comes to their future.As a young woman who has met her challenges head on and won, her peersaspire to follow in her footsteps.

After college, the ambitious young woman seeks to further her education by becoming a LMSW.As Shanida is only a fewmonths shy of obtaining a bachelor’s in social work, her professional aspiration of changing the lives of many is well withinher grasp.

TiffanyTrouble in her household led Tiffany to move into a St.Vincent’s Group Home.Although thetransition was frightening, the staff connected with the youth and helped her adapt to the newconditions. Because of the state of her life prior to entering the Group Home,Tiffany had notcompleted high school. However, her support system at St.Vincent’s encouraged the youth tocontinue her education.

An independent thinker,Tiffany decided not to label herself as high school dropout. She wantedto beat the odds. On her own, she sought out to obtain her GED, and she did.Tiffany saw this asthe first sign that she could succeed if she remained dedicated and headstrong to her cause.

Because of her determination and unapologetic focus, SVS spotted a potential rising star. Here was a person who did notallow her struggles to deter her accomplishing her goals. Instead, she grabbed onto her dreams and went full speed ahead.Asshe reconnected with her family and continued to develop trust among the SVS staff, she began to listen to their words ofadvice.“Why don’t you apply to college?” they would say.“It would be a good opportunity for you. It will help you figureout what you want to do with your life.”Tiffany agreed that she should apply to college and see what the future held for her.

Now, in her sophomore year, the twenty-year old, computer whiz aspires to become a developer at Apple. She also developeda passion for current events and became a religious newspaper reader.Today, as she stays on top her school work, she stayspolitically informed so she can make a good decision in the upcoming presidential election. If it wasn’t for SVS, her dreamsmay have been the same, but she may not have had the support to accomplish her goals.Tiffany thanks SVS for providingstrong mentorship, financial support and understanding. Her family at SVS was there when she needed them the most.



BenA sophomore at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Ben is on the right path torealizing his dream of becoming a nurse.The St.Vincent’s Group Home resident was not alwaysas focused academically. However, a big turning point for the young man was facing the realworld after he dropped out of high school. Ben quickly found out that without a high schooldiploma, he was less armed to compete for jobs and establish the kind of independent life thathe had always anticipated. He then knew that in order to have the life that he wanted forhimself, he needed to work hard and obtain an education. He dug deep and found the innerstrength to go back to school and finish what he had started.“I wanted to have a great future, soI did what I had to do,” says the SVS youth.

Getting accepted into college has been Ben’s greatest accomplishment thus far.While it was a challenge, he met it with vigorand enthusiasm.The young man who once did not think twice about dropping out of high school is now on the track tosuccess.As a part of SVS, Ben can rely on his support system to help him stay on his current path. His SVS family, includingstaff and youth, has motivated him to make the most out of his talent and will to succeed.

With no intention of going backwards, the outgoing, vivacious young man makes sure that his school work receives his fullattention before he engages in any social activity. Because he attends college locally, he often participates in SVSprogramming and events. His role as a mentor for up and coming youth has left a strong impact on the college student.Today, he utilizes his passion for helping others as motivation to get through his studies and become a nurse in hiscommunity.

DajonJust an adolescent, Dajon woke up one day and found the nerve to leave his mother’s house.While many youth leave their homes as they go off to college, unfortunate circumstances causedDajon’s departure from home to be earlier than usual. His life was surrounded by trauma andneglect, and he wanted to “do better.” Because he knew that his childhood home was not thebest environment for him, he took his life into his own hands and improved it.This courageousyoung man now lives with his friend and St.Vincent’s foster family.“They inspired me to helpmyself,” says the college sophomore.With goals of pursuing a career in film production, Dajonnot only thinks out of the box, he dreams out of the box.

While finding success in film production can be challenging as it is a highly competitive industry, Dajon does not let theodds distract him from getting ahead. He is confident that as long as he continues on this path with his current mindset andSVS family in his corner, he will achieve success in this field. One day, Dajon hopes to inspire another youth with a passionfor film art by setting the example on how to do it.

Now, in his second year at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Dajon studies video art.When he is notworking on a school assignment, he still can be found with his eyes glued to a computer screen. Goal-oriented andartistically driven, this young man uses his creativity to not only dictate his future goals but to pass the time.While theaverage college student may spend his weekend at the movies, Dajon is busy creating movies. He also designs mockcommercials; draws in his sketchpad and reads fantasy fiction which influences his artistry.

TearaGraduating this semester,Teara has set the academic bar in her family to a higher level.Teara andher brother are the first generation in her family to obtain schooling at the university level. Eventhough the adults in her early family life did not have strong academic backgrounds, she hadalways set her sights on furthering her education.While in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree,SVS provided Teara with academic and financial support to help her through her highereducation career atYork College.

In fact, it was her foster care support system at St.Vincent’s that inspired her to switch from hernursing aspirations to a career in social work.An optimist,Teara believes that in order to have a

good academic career and a successful life, you have to “stay focused and surround yourself with people who respect youand will nurture you.” Leaning on her SVS family,Teara found a strong circle to keep her grounded throughout the last fouryears through both disappointments and triumphs.

Her college experience has allowed her to explore different aspects of life as she develops her tastes. Open-minded andadventurous, this college senior enjoys experiencing different cultures and cuisines.After trying various foods,Teara findsItalian to be the most delicious cuisine.Among her favorite hobbies, she enjoys keeping up with political causes, includingthe upcoming election.As this young woman is enamored with the effects of political influence and social change, she aimsto implement change in society. Because of how much the devoted staff at St.Vincent’s shaped her life,Teara aims to do thesame for other youth entering the foster care system.After she obtains her BSW, she has decided to pursue an MSW atHunter College and give back to the community from which her roots will always lie.

CherylBecause of her quick wit and natural intelligence, teachers always flocked to Cheryl,encouraging her to recognize her true academic potential. Not only was she dedicated to herschool work, she became immersed in sports.Athletically inclined from a young age, Cheryljoined the school basketball team as an outlet for her frustrations.With St.Vincent’s foster care,the youth found a safe haven; however, it did not change the fact that she did not receive thekind of support and motivation from her biological parents that she wanted.To cope, Cheryldecided to look elsewhere. She looked within herself.

Dedicated to her studies, this young woman applied herself daily and successfully enteredAdvanced Placement classes during her senior year of high school. However, because of peer pressure and personalchallenges, Cheryl found herself struggling not to fall into the same trap that many of her teenage peers were falling victimto. Cutting class and slacking off became regular behaviors in her school environment. Even though she knew better, it washard to stay on the right path.Thankfully, she knew she could turn to the St.Vincent’s staff and her mentors at school as herAP Biology teacher and basketball coach for moral support.With their unwavering care, the young scholar was able tocomplete high school and realize her dream of attending college.

Usually the leader of the pack, this independent-minded young woman does not see herself a follower.“I want to be myown boss,” the college sophomore says. Originally, she had hopes of enlisting in the US Air Force. However, now as she takescriminal justice classes at Fulton Montgomery Community College, she has decided to pursue a career as a federal agent.Whether Cheryl chooses to work for the CIA or attempts another profession, she will always credit SVS and her formerteachers for believing her from day one.



BryantIn 2001, Bryant was introduced to the SVS Group Home youth as the newest resident to jointhe St.Vincent’s family.As he became acclimated with the group home’s daily routine and rules,he turned to older residents for guidance. Joel, a former ADP youth of the year, gave him wordsto live by.“Keep a good balance between school and friends,” he’d say.“If you want toaccomplish anything, you have to work for it.”The young man gravitated towards history classes.He took an instant liking to Greek and Roman mythology, but somewhere along the line, helost focus.

It turned out that it wasn’t so easy to follow his older peer’s advice. Bryant found himself gettinginto trouble and falling short in his studies. Convinced that high school was not the right place for him at that time, Bryantleft school before graduating.The young man was indeed rebellious but not without smarts. SVS staff knew that he could dobetter and continued to coach him until he returned to school.

Years later, Bryant, the self-proclaimed former rebel, is now a college senior at John Jay College and an exemplary collegestudent assistant at SVS. Only a math class and language requirement shy of graduation, this young man is so close to thefinishing line that he can see it.“I am staying focused and putting my priorities in place, so I can wrap up college with astrong GPA.”

He used to want to be a doctor, and then a teacher. However, today he is working towards joining the FBI. With hisobservant eye, knack for computer programming and industrious nature, his professional ambition seems to be the perfect fit.“At some point, I wanted to be a cop. It was a fourth grade teacher who told me ‘Aim higher than a cop’ and I know nowwhat she meant. Her name was Ms.Williams.”

Shaniqua“I’ve been with St.Vincent’s practically my whole life, since I was five years old,” says Shaniqua,the twenty-one year old college freshman.While foster care has not been an easy ride, the youngwoman has connected with SVS staff, specifically her social worker who has been the youth’schampion from the beginning. Shaniqua even views her as an older sister.Today, she gives youththe same words that her social worker gave her once upon a time,“Try to focus. Stay in school.A lot of people will be proud of you.You will be proud of yourself.”

Shaniqua agrees that both the best and hardest part of being an adult is being independent.Theyoung college student admits to facing financial hardships, but she embraces the challenges as

they are helping to mold her into a strong, self-efficient individual.

Creatively ambitious and versatile, this young college student plays a number of instruments, including the saxophone, flute,violin, cello and a bit of piano. She can even read notes. However, it was cooking that really grabbed her attention. In highschool, she took a class and became infatuated with working a kitchen as well as the competitive nature of cooking.

Even though Shaniqua is new to college environment, this will not be the first degree under her belt. In 2011, she graduatedfrom Star Career Academy, a professional culinary school that emphasizes “learning from doing” as it prepares its students tofulfill food service roles, such as sous-chef, baker, line cook and many more. Now, the Star Academy graduate attendsLaGuardia Community College in pursuit of obtaining a degree in Business Management to “pump up” her resume.AsShaniqua has traveled to cities such as London and Paris, she would like to expand her talents universally and become aninternational chef. One day, she hopes to expand her cooking from a select few to thousands.



ChristopherFour years ago, Christopher joined the St.Vincent’s family. Currently, he resides in theRichmond group home as he attends college.As he undergoes his freshman year atQueensborough College, he looks back on his journey and is proud of where he is today.“Backthen, I was a nuisance, especially in school. I had a lot of anger inside of me, and I didn’t have aclue on how to control it.” College wasn’t always a sure thing for Christopher.While he knewthe importance of having an education, he did not always feel that it was a realistic opportunityfor him.

As he struggled with getting control of his life, he dropped out of high school. If he could notfinish high school, how could he even think about college? For a year and a half, Christopher was out of school and felt lost.Thanks to the staff at SVS and supportive peers in the group home, he mustered up enough courage to take GED classes.Inspired to do something better with his life, Christopher put all of his energy in obtaining his high school equivalency.Despite theself-defeating attitude that often won over his judgment, he had faith in himself. He studied hard and passed the GED.“Livelife to the right way, and live it to the fullest,” Christopher says.“Life is short, so you have to enjoy every moment. But youalso have to think about what you want your future to be.There has to be a balance.”

With the GED in his hand, Christopher had proof that he could achieve anything as long as he focused and did his best.With the encouragement and practical assistance of SVS, Christopher found his way into college.The young man who oncehad a hard time going to class and staying out of trouble is now employed part-time and studying to be an emergency roomphysician. One day, he hopes to have his own practice.

CrystalannAn SVS veteran, Crystalann has been with St.Vincent’s since the age of six. Strong-minded anddriven, Crystalann has always been an excellent student with big dreams.After graduating fromRandolph High School, the ambitious, young scholar went straight to college in the fall. Despitethe challenges of being in foster care, Crystalann has remained 100% focused on her studies.Thefirst in her family to attend college, she has already set the bar to the next level.

“Independence motivates me,” states the twenty-one year old who has recently aged out of thefoster care. Crystalann describes the life that she sees in her future,“After I graduate fromcollege, I will obtain my master’s in forensics and international criminal justice. My plan is to

find a position working within a government agency. I also plan on moving out of the projects and into a nice, safeneighborhood. One day, I would love to have my own family and kids.”

Crystalann does not sit and wait for life to happen to her. She relies on herself to find out about all of the possibilities outthere for foster youth. In addition to the support that Crystalann receives from St.Vincent’s, she also obtained a scholarshipfrom NewYorkers for Children, which Crystalann acts asVice President on itsYouth Advisory Board.“It’s important to helpothers, especially when you can relate to what they have been going through.”As a member on the board, she advocates forother foster youth and as an ADP mentor at St.Vincent’s, she serves as a positive role model for high school students in SVSfoster care.

“I’ve always worked,” she says,“but I decided to leave my job so I could dedicate more time to school.” Even though thistransition has been challenging, Crystalann has decided to take it one day at a time. Right now, she is enjoying her classesand looking forward to what her life holds after graduation.



DevonDevon has a lot of people who are counting on him to succeed. In 2008, he entered an SVSgroup home and developed close-knit relationships with SVS staff. Since then, they have been inDevon’s corner every step of the way.Today, Devon is a freshman at the Borough of ManhattanCommunity College, majoring in Human Services and Social Work.When he feels like givingup, he thinks about his younger siblings who look up to him. He also thinks about both of hisgrandmothers who unfortunately passed away before he was able to graduate from high schooland start his college studies.As he promises to make them proud, Devon sheds stereotype ofat-risk youth and demonstrates that education is the gateway to a better life.

It doesn’t always come easy.“Getting to class on time is hard,” Devon says,“but I’m taking steps to be more punctual.” Now,that he is the position to excel, Devon will stop at nothing to succeed. For those who want to be where he is, Devon sharesthe knowledge that he has obtained from not only his own life experiences but from older peers in the group home,“Thestreets aren’t everything.There’s nothing there for you. If you want to improve your life, stay in school. Stick to it no matterhow hard it gets. Make smart decisions. Keep your mind straight, and stay out of jail.” Because of the strong role models inhis life, Devon aspires to be a social worker.Through this profession, he hopes to change the lives of youth and guide themonto the right path.

Even though Devon has only recently started college, he is enjoying every minute of the experience. In addition toreceiving moral support from SVS, Devon believes that it is important to surround yourself with people who are asmotivated as you.“My girlfriend goes to SUNY Canton and wants to be a teacher.We motivate each other and understandthat school is our top priority right now.”

Kevina“The thing that inspires me is my passion to succeed and not be a failure,” Kevina says.“I alwaysgo above and beyond what I have to do.” Since Kevina entered SVS foster care six years ago, shehas taken up many leadership roles among her peers.Today, she serves as an ADP mentor and asan SVS SMART Girls Program Assistant. Kevina enjoys helping those youth in need byincorporating humor; showing devotion and leading by example.“When you think about givingup, just push harder,” says the college junior.

Majoring in criminology, Kevina dedicates most of her time to studying. However, the busyyoung scholar also works part-time as a daycare provider.When times get hard, the twenty year

old turns to her faith for motivation as it is a driving force in her life.“Who God blesses no man can curse,” she says. Inaddition to her faith, Kevina thanks SVS staff, her aunts and sisters for serving as inspiration. Because of theiraccomplishments, Kevina was able to see firsthand that hard work does pay off in the end, despite the cards that you mayhave been handed in life.

As Kevina aspires to become a probation officer, she decided to transfer to John Jay College, which specializes in criminaljustice.“The transfer has been a great experience, and I love the campus.”Always there to provide guidance, SVS staff hassupported Kevina since she was 14 and will continue to provide a safe haven for her and the rest of ADP youth, even aftergraduation.



MarcelleMarcelle arrived at St.Vincent’s doorstep when she was 15 years old. Before then, she had beenunder the care of her grandmother. However, when grandmother moved, her mother refused togive consent to let Marcelle go with her. Her father returned to his homeland Jamaica to live,and her mother was left to be her only caretaker.Times did not go smoothly as her mother wasnot equipped to be a parent.

After experiencing neglect and abuse, she entered foster care.Although Marcelle excelledacademically, she caved into the overwhelming stress in her life and dropped out of school. Shecontemplated getting her GED, but she knew she was capable of achieving a high school

diploma.After several foster care agencies and home, Marcelle found St.Vincent’s.As time passed, her dreams of success ledher back to high school. She applied to Walk in Love Christian Academy and was accepted.

Now, in her third year at NewYork City of Technology, Marcelle continues to study rigorously as a nursing major. Despitethe intensity of her studies, she manages to incorporate her work as a health aide. She is also a member of the Delta SigmaKi sorority, which has allowed her to meet a lot of new people and find out more about activities on campus.

In addition to Marcelle’s many accomplishments, such as being on the honor roll and getting elected as class president of herhigh school, she was also awarded the SVSYouth of theYear award in 2011.Today, Marcelle credits St.Vincent’s as being astrong support system for her as SVS helped her get through the toughest times of her life. Now, with the support of SVS,Marcelle continues to strengthen her bond with her SVS foster mother and has reestablished her relationships with herbiological family.“I wouldn’t have been able to get where I am now without the help of St.Vincent’s from my caseworkerand to the rest of the staff.”

JazzmineAs a foster care youth, Jazzmine has not let her past struggles dictate her present or her future.Through St.Vincent’s, she has learned to take advantage of every opportunity that comes to herdoor. Instead of staying local for college, she decided to venture out to a school seven hoursaway. Having completed her freshman year at Buffalo State College, Jazzmine is sure that “youwill never feel any worse anywhere else, but you will also never feel better anywhere else.”Currently, Jazzmine, a public relations & advertising major and the co-capitan of the CaribbeanStudent Organization divides her time between her studies and dance practice.The collegesophomore admits to struggling with getting a good amount of sleep; nevertheless, she aims to

perfect her grades, while getting the most out of her college experience.“Sometimes I’ll practice or study up to 4 a.m. Ihave a strong work ethic and a competitive spirit. I always want to do my best.” Hard work and talent pays off as Jazzminewon the Dance Hall Queen competition this past April.

While she maintains a hectic schedule at college, she still takes part in the St.Vincent’s programs, such as the Job ReadinessProgram.With only two job interviews under her belt, the aspiring Public Relations Specialist used her free time during thesummer to strengthen her job readiness skills by meeting with SVS employment specialist to discuss job interviewingtechniques. One lesson that she learned is the importance of standing out during group interviews by being confident;speaking up and showing both the ability to lead and collaborate.“In these employment workshops, St.Vincent’s providesinsight on what you may be doing wrong.You open your eyes about a lot of things. I am truly grateful for what I’ve learnedbecause in the process, I’ve gotten to know myself better.”

At only 19, Jazzmine thinks ahead and aspires to be completely self-sufficient in a stable career by the age of 25. St.Vincent’swill see her through as she accomplishes this goal.



Santos“You have to believe in yourself. Be confident.Trust yourself, and you’ll get to where you wantto go,” Santos says.The young man speaks from personal experience. Since he first came to theUnited States, Santos committed himself to not only learning English but perfecting it.“It tookme two and half years to learn it, and five years to perfect it,” says the Honduran-native. Musicplayed a large role in helping Santos learn the language of the land.“Music is universal. Itinspires me, and listening to lyrics made it easier to pick up words. I like all types of music,especially songs with some good content. Jay-Z, for example, always has a message in his songs.”Even though Santos was a stranger in a new country, six years ago he found people who he

could trust at St.Vincent’s.As he entered an SVS group home, he realized that through thick and thin, St.Vincent’s would behis champion. Over the years, Santos has found the staff and administration to be supportive as he often looks to St.Vincent’sfor guidance.“They always project the idea that they want the best for me and that they see my potential.”As Santos studies mental health at Kingsborough Community College, he is working towards becoming a schoolpsychologist.Although he is charismatic and outgoing, his social life is not the highlight of his college career.“I like tosocialize, but that’s not what it’s all about.The ladies are always going to be there. So are the friends. However, my educationis the most important thing to me right now.” Santos has enjoyed getting to know his professors in class and during officehours. He particularly liked Professor Winter’s class because the professor managed the class well and was able to explainthings in a way that everyone could understand. He had a collaborative way of teaching.“It wasn’t his way or the highway.He was a teacher but also a student,” Santos says.Next semester, Santos plans on studying harder, especially in math. He believes that as long as he focuses, he will be able toachieve his dream.“Life is going to get harder because of the type of person who I am. One thing is not enough. I alwayswant more.”

MamadouAfter Mamadou’s aunt was deported to Senegal due to citizenship problems, he was left alone inU.S., a foreign country in which he had no family. However, St.Vincent’s made a place forMamadou, and he became a resident in one of the group homes.“For a little while, I didn’tthink about going to college because I thought that I couldn’t afford it. St.Vincent’s has helpedmake the dream of college actually a reality,” says the Senegal-native.Today, Mamadou isstudying civil engineering at the NewYork City College of Technology.

From a little boy, Mamadou has always had a range of hobbies.When he wasn’t playingsoccer, he was busy drawing sketches. He was inspired by bridges, underwater tunnels,

stadiums and other places.When he would see a landmark, it would immediately pique his curiosity. Mamadou becameinterested in knowing more about the science behind the places that he would see every day. It also made him realizethat there were so many possibilities out there.There were a variety different fields that he could possibly enter, fromarchitecture to engineering.

“When I am not studying or working, I like to create. I enjoy working construction and learning about the different soils,different foundations. I also like computer design. On AutoCAD, I can design anything that I imagine.”

As Mamadou works towards finishing his associate’s degree and reuniting with his family, he stays focused on continuing onthe path to success. In addition to St.Vincent’s, he looks at his mother as inspiration.“My mother has given me the couragenot to give up.” For youth who want to be where he is now, Mamadou advises them,“Opportunities may be different foreveryone, but goals may be the same. It’s important to work towards your goals no matter what, and you will create the rightopportunity for yourself.”

TewanA recent addition to St.Vincent’s,Tewan has been in St.Vincent’s foster care since March. Eventhough he has experienced trauma and hard times, he is now currently residing with good fosterparents, his aunt and uncle.Tewan attributes his recent success to their strict rules andexpectations in the house. “Being in school has kept me off the streets. My biggestaccomplishment in the last year has been graduating high school. My aunt always keeps me onmy feet. She makes sure that I’m being productive, and my uncle always gives me advice. He letsme know that he’s proud of me.”

With the moral support and financial assistance of St.Vincent’s,Tewan has enrolled in NewYorkCity Technology College with aspirations of becoming a computer technician, the same major that his mother had oncestudied.“I first developed a love for computers because of my mother. She introduced me to them when I was about nineyears old. Unfortunately, she never finished her degree. However, if I stay with it, I know that I will break that cycle.”

While Tewan does not live with his mother, he is working on maintaining a healthy relationship with her. She visits him andhis brothers and sisters frequently, and he is looking forward to enjoying a big Thanksgiving dinner with his whole family.

As the oldest son,Tewan takes pride in taking care of his responsibilities, including showing his younger siblings and cousinshow to overcome obstacles and succeed. He also enjoys playing sports, such as football and basketball.“I like doing somethingwith my time whether it’s being athletic or reading a book.The last novel that I really enjoyed was Push by Sapphire. I couldreally relate to what the main character Precious was going through.The verbal abuse hit home for me. It reminded me ofsome of my past experiences, but it also made me realize how far I’ve come and how I’m only moving forward.”
