Sleep according to the Carak SamhitaAccording to Rishi Carak, Sleep is one of the three main sub-pillars that support our health (Ca.Su.: ch.11, v:35) . Our bodies need sleep when the mind is tired after a long day of sensory overload. Good quality sleep occurs when the mind completely withdraws from the senses; if the mind is still engaged with sensory objects, the quality of sleep deteriorates. Sometimes it is not easy to dis-engage the mind after a long or intense day of activities, even if we crave to have replenishing sound sleep. What to do then? Our bodies are mapped with specific energetic points called Marma points. The Nadi-s or our body’s vibrational and energetic pathways travel through these marma points, so that these marma points can act as trigger points for deeper relaxation and sounder sleep when touched and/or massaged in a gentle way. Vaidya Mishra’s SVA lineage teaches us about promoting good sound sleep through the Transdermal Marma System. How does this system work? In order to understand that, first we should look at how sleep is defined within the SVA tradition.

Sleep in the SVA TraditionIn SVA terms, when we are engaged in an activity, we use up great quantities of of Pranic energy, particularly Soma or lunar energy. SVA explains that Lunar energy/Soma is the raw material for Ojas. Ojas is the connecting factor between our mind, senses and the physical body. Nadis help receive and transport Prana. The three constituents of Prana are: Lunar energy (raw material for Soma); Agni/solar energy (power of

transformation); and Marut (carries the intelligence and flow of Prana).

Ojas and SleepAll the etiological factors that burn or use up Ojas are factors that result in sleep imbalance. In other words, the etiological factors responsible for consuming Ojas are also the ones that disturb sleep, such as: stress; anger; toxic fumes; excessive exercise; hemorrhage. Fasting or an uncomfortable bed also disturb sleep. (Ca.Su.ch.21; v.55). These are some factors, amongst others, that lower the Ojas which can then result in sleep disturbance. The ratio of Ojas itself also fluctuates depending on the time of day. During the day, we are involved in excessive mental and physical activities which burns and brings down the levels of Ojas. During the day time, the ratio of Ojas used is higher than that of its production - we spend more of it through activity. During night time, when activities slow down, we tend to consume less Ojas. In addition, our physiology is programmed to produce Ojas during the night time. Soma gets synthesized when sleep is optimal - sound and deep and restorative. This is also supported by the fact that there is no intense Agni due to absence of Sun rays during the night time. Lunar energy is predominant during the night and so there is abundance of Soma which gets synthesizes into Ojas. This supports and sustains deeper nourishing sleep. In addition to lower levels of Ojas during the day due to increased sensory activity, exposure to EMF/EMR yet another important factor that depletes Ojas. Agni and Marut predominant EMF and EMR vibrations heat and dry up the Soma in our physiology. Since Soma is the raw material for Ojas, this automatically brings down the Ojas quality and level.

Electromagnetic  fields  suppress  the  activity  of  the  Pineal  Gland  and  reduce  melatonin  production  (Pineal  gland  is  not  very  well  protected  by  the  blood-brain  barrier).

EMF  also  affect  serotonin,  circadian  rhythm,  and  endocrine  system;

Electromagnetic  waves  from  electrical  appliances  also  trigger  serotonin  and  melatonin  in  the  brain  and  body  (positive  ions  increase  serotonin  levels  in  the  body  the  same  as  Prozac  does);

melatonin  is  an  important  neurohormone in  the  body.  In  the  Pineal  gland    Serotonin  converts  into  melatonin  by  enzymatic  interaction.    Serotonin  and  melatonin  regulate  the  circadian  rhythm.  Melatonin  also  regulates  the  function  of  all  organs  of  endocrine  system.

Improper  functioning  of  hormones,  exposes  to  the  risk  of  Depression,  mood  swings,  anxiety,  sleep  disturbances,  brain  tumor  and  other  neurological  illness.

The importance of good sleep cannot be underestimated as it supports the production of good quality and quantity of the dhatus or seven tissues; it nourishes the seven tissues/dhatus; supports physical, mental and emotional stamina; promotes immunity; lubricates and nurtures the channels and all the parts of the body; enhances stability; proper coordination between senses and the body parts. Regular and proper sleep increases healthy life span (ref: ca.ch.21.v.42)So what can we do? Here are some practical SVA tips that can help you in your quest for deeper nourishing sleep. ********************************

Protocols for enhancing good quality sleep using the Wisdom of Nadis and Marmas:General protocol: Marmas are located all over our body. Each marma has a specific function and importance in terms of the final action we are seeking. For inducing or promoting deep sleep, the marma points on and around the head, cervical, and shoulder areas are the most important ones. We can obtain the desired results by doing the following simple steps. In addition, to support the physiology’s calming, Vaidya

Mishra has designed specific products that can go on targeted marma points for correcting accumulated imbalances. See the full protocols below. Step 1:

• Open Sushumna Nadi by Apply DGL Transdermal Cream and SuperSport Transdermal Cream before going to bed on the lower spine/back area

• Swipe the DGL cream and SuperSport cream on your legs and feet gently massaging downwards. This facilitates easy breathing.

Step 2: Apply Soma Nidra Roll-On to all these Marmas, and Maha Marma oil to Adhipati Marma. This is to enhance reception of Prana and transformation of Soma to Ojas.

vibrational rhythm.

• These protocols help particularly in absorbing vibration of Soma from the Moon• Transforming Soma to Ojas

• Synthesizing and supporting the neurotransmitters of the brain and colon.

People with pre-existing conditions such as menopause or side effects of medication or pain, please consult with your doctor or SVA practitioner. But in general, the above protocol enhances reception and flow of Prana.

Sometimes, however, it is imbalances of a digestive nature specifically linked to the digestive system that can impeded our sleep, increasing Pitta Dosha, specially Sadhak Pitta and/or Ranjak Pitta, and turning sleep into a fleeting impossible dream! What to do then? SVA food is the answer. Vaidya has given numerous recipes that can be prepared either on the spot to address an immediate concern, or that can be prepared beforehand, if you have identified the source of your sleep problem as being a Pitta Dosha imbalance.

Eat and drink yourself into Sleep!Here are a few recipes from Vaidya’s rich SVA lineage coffers of knowledge to help you balance your body’s chemistry through delicious drinks, cookies, and other food items and induce deep sleep.

In the EndSo you’ve done your marma point massage, you had your cookies and milk and perhaps more (!), but you could still need or use an extra little help to just tip you over into slumberland? Here are some more wonderful and tested SVA products that have kept and keep hundreds of satisfied customers sleeping well and waking up happy. SVA Soma Nidra Tea: finish your day and signal the onset of the rest period of the day with this lovely calming tea. It is a unique proprietary blend of herbal synergies with chamomile, Lavender, Nutmeg, Poppy seeds and more. Drink it 30-45 minutes prior to your actual sleep, try to drink it in muted light and EMF activity so your physiology does not receive conflicting information from the herbs and its surrounding. The tea will re-instate your body’s natural rest cycle routines with those of Nature. This tea works best when it is drank during the sleep inducing time of the night between 8-9:45pm.Pro-Sleep Plus Transdermal Cream: Blended from energetically viable herbs like Indian valerian and muskroot, this transdermal cream delivers soma-enhancing nutrients through the marma points during sleep. Marmas are energy exchange centers in the body through which prana from nature is received and distributed. Pro-Sleep Plus Transdermal Cream is applied directly to the adhipati marma (top of the head). This is the most important of the 107 marmas because it receives all the prana into the body then channels it to the other 106 marmas. Another vital pair of marmas is located in the center of the soles. When this transdermal cream is applied to these marmas with gentle pressure, it supplies the vibrational energy of the herbs to the heart and releases excess agni and marut from the heart and the rest of body. Individuals who use Pro-Sleep Plus report considerable improvement in sleep.

Restful Sleep Herbal Memory NectarThese nectar drops, containing the subtlest essence of herbs to promote soma in the physiology, are added to neutral-pH spring water and sipped throughout the day. The powerful vibrational energy of these herbs helps to neutralize the overload of agni and marut that we receive during the day while we are working.When it comes time to sleep, there is less of a buzz in the body and mind from too much agni and marut. The result is a more relaxed state, and a natural inclination to drift off to sleep when the time is right.

Pro-Sleep Soma Nidra Aroma OilThis aromatic oil blends several soma-predominant herbs which are helpful for sleep and delivers them through the air you breathe at night. Alternatively, you can place a few drops in your bath or on your wrists before going to bed.The calming, nourishing effect of this oil helps to set the stage for balanced and restful sleep.Soma Nidra Soap: take a nice relaxing bath to wash off the worries of the day and indulge in this calming soap bar for enhanced arometherapeutic goodness! Soma Nidra Spray: you fall asleep and it’s deep, but all of a sudden you wake up in a jolt in the middle of the night and even though your eyelids are still heavy with sleep and your body wants to keep resting in sleep, your mind is buzzing with a thousand thoughts a second, and you are starting to get irritated at everything. Stretch out to grab your bottle of Soma Nidra Oral Spray and squirt it a couple of times in your oral cavity and keep your mouth closed a few seconds to allow the aromatic oils to penetrate and then swallow. Then close your eyes and ignore the frenzied thoughts, focus on one simple positive thought - blissful sleep, and fade back into the land of sweet slumber....Soma Nidra Roll-On: pacify your mind and induce sleep directly by applying the goodness of calming herbs directly on your cervical area, shoulders, and spine. Use the Roll-On before going to sleep or in the middle of the night and get immediate relief.

Soma-Cal CapsulesCalcium is known in modern research for its ability to promote sleep. This calcium does not come from the bones of animals, but rather from coral growing in the sea collected in a manner that does not deplete our natural resources. The ocean is a great source of soma, and this adds to the soma-enhancing power of this formula. Not only does this formulation contain the soma-rich physical material, calcium, but it is processed with the pure vibration of soma in moonlight and rose water to ensure that the most subtle quality of soma is available.
