Its so simple... Sustrans
straightorward and practical
solutions really work.
Last year we made it possible or more
children to walk or cycle to school than ever
beore; we saw record-breaking numberso people using the National Cycle
Network; we enabled thousands o people
in workplaces and communities throughout
the UK to walk, cycle and use public
transport more; we worked with residents
to redesign their streets to suit their needs;
and we campaigned or slower speeds in
residential areas so that children can be out
and about and active rom their ront door.
None o this would be possible without the
ongoing support o our donors, unders
and corporate partners so, on behal o
all the benefciaries o our work, I wouldlike to thank you. Were also grateul to
our dedicated and committed team o
volunteers who enable us to extend
the reach o our work.
We all lead busy lives, so weve kept this
Review simple. Its designed as a snapshot
o our work that you can read on a train
journey or over a cup o coee. We hope
it will inspire you, perhaps give pause or
thought on how, in this sophisticated world
o ours, its oten simple measures that are
most eective.
And, o course, wed love to tell you more
about what we do and to hear your ideas
on how we can work together in 2012
and beyond. So i you'd like to get in
touch, you'll fnd our contact details on
the back cover.

This is the dierence
we made in 2011The UK took to its eet (and pedals)with a 15% increase in trips on theNational Cycle Network. In total,484 million journeys were madeby 3.3 million individuals. Thehealth benefts o all this activityare worth 442m.
340,000 pupils in 1,400 schools workedwith us resulting in an 80% increasein the number o children regularlycycling to school and a 100% increasein those cycling every day.
20,000 households received tailored
travel inormation leading to increaseso up to 21% in walking, 31% in cyclingand 25% in public transport use, andreductions o up to 11% in car use. Thelargest personalised travel planningprogramme in the UK began in Wales, aiming to reach 100,000 households.
Even more artworks were added to
the National Cycle Network, including15 portrait benches eaturingcelebrities and local heroes chosenby local people.
Over 4,000 people supported our reerange kids pledge calling or 20mphspeed limits as standard in residential
and built-up areas and greaterinvestment in walking and cyclingroutes particularly to school.

Communities
Sometimes the missing jigsaw
piece can make all the dierence
Weve been busy lling in the gaps
on the National Cycle Network and
its oten the missing link that makes
all the dierence in peoples
decision to leave the car at home.
Many will remember the images
on national news in November 2009
o the devastating foods that hit
Workington and washed away all
o its bridges, cutting o an entire
community rom the town centre,
shops, schools and workplaces.
We worked with Cumbria County
Council to replace the Navvies
bridge and were delighted to open
the new, purpose-built walking and
cycling bridge in September 2011.
As well as reuniting the local
community, the bridge orms part
o the popular Hadrians Cycleway,
drawing tourists to the area
throughout the year.
The new bridge in Workington
is just one example o more than
70 community schemes throughout
the country that are enabling people
to walk or cycle or more o their
everyday journeys.
Weve helped neighbourhoods
design their own streets
We've worked with a number
o communities in dierent parts
o the UK to help them to redesign
their streets so that trac moves
more slowly, children are able
to play outside and neighbourscan socialise.
In 2011, we continued working with
an entire neighbourhood, comprising
over 900 households in eight streets,
in the London Borough o Haringey.
When residents and primary school
children in Kirkcaldy decided to
make their local street, Katrine
Crescent, more people-riendly
and colourul, pupils set to work to
design a dazzling 'bugwall' artworkas its centre-piece. Meanwhile in
Elgin, residents and pupils at
Greenwards Primary School and
Elgin High School redesigned
Cockmuir Place to give priority to
those on oot and bike. This
included replacing car parking
spaces with a grassed area where
people can socialise, and adding a
wide playul stepping stone
pavement designed by
artist Nicola Atkinson.

A little knowledge goes a long way
In 2011, we provided travel
inormation to almost 20,000
households in Broxbourne, Croxley
Green and Ipswich, resulting in
signicant increases in walking,
cycling and public transport use.
We also began the largest
personalised travel planning
programme in the UK, aiming to
reach 100,000 households across
Wales over our years. Thanks to
unding rom the Welsh Government
and working with local authorities
and our partner Socialdata, the
programme started in Cardi
where we're aiming to reach
63,000 households.
There was urther good news
or Wales when the First Minister
announced that there would be an
Active Travel (Wales) Bill. The Bill
is a landmark initiative that will place
a duty on Welsh local authorities
to provide walking and cycling
routes. The announcement ollows
a ve-year campaign by Sustrans
in Wales.
Fresh Air Miles events
Over the summer, more than athousand people took part in
Sustrans' Fresh Air Miles undraising
events. There were almost a hundred
events aimed at amilies across the
UK including barbeques, picnics,
treasure hunts and bike rides.
Our volunteers are spreading
the word on active travel
We recruited and trained volunteers
to help people become more active
through walking and cycling oreveryday journeys. In 2011, these
volunteers oered advice and
ran walking and cycling activities
in communities, workplaces,
universities and schools or
over 1,900 people.
Our Active Travel Champions
programme has been granted the
prestigious London 2012 Inspire
mark, the badge o the London
2012 Inspire programme which
recognises exceptional and
innovative projects inspired
by the 2012 Games.
I thought the inormation
pack was excellent.
Because it was tailored
to what you asked or
it was really helpul.

Health
Enabling people to enjoy
healthier and more active
liestyles
Sustrans runs cycle rides, walks
and other activities in communities,
workplaces and schools throughout
the country to enable people to
become more active and enjoyhealthier liestyles.
Through this work weve helped
thousands o adults become more
active through cycling and walking.
In many places where weve worked
weve seen signicant increases in
cycling and walking. For example,
there was an increase o 15% in the
number o people walking or cycling
or at least 10 minutes on ve days
o the week.
70% o people who use the National
Cycle Network said that it increased
their level o physical activity. Using
the World Health Organisations
tool, developed with Sustrans, or
measuring the health benets o
walking and cycling, the estimated
annual health benet to all those
using the Network in 2011 was
worth 442 million.
Our work in communities,
workplaces and universities
has long-lasting results
We've worked in universities and
hospitals in Leeds, Lincoln, Luton,
Nottingham, Southampton,
Stockton and Cardi, plus NHS
Trusts across Wales, to encouragestudents and sta to cycle more by
oering bike loan schemes, cycle
training and maintenance classes
and advice. This has resulted in a
30% increase in the number o
people achieving 30 minutes or
more physical activity on at least
ve days o the week.
In 2011, we worked with over 2,400
employees in 46 workplaces in Blyth.
The proportion o people choosing
to drive as their usual way o getting
to work decreased by 15%.
In our surveys, 99% o people
who took part in our community
and workplace-based activities
said they would continue to walk
and cycle in the uture.
I now ride to the park
with my kids most
weekends. Its given
me a real health boost.

Getting thenation to work
A quarter o all trips on theNational Cycle Network in2011 took people to workor education.
The new bridge is a key
route in to work or me.
10 Sustrans Annual Review 2011
90%o commuters agreethat they save moneyby using the National
Cycle Network.
84%o commuters useNational Cycle Networkroutes because theyare convenient.
Transport is vital in enabling people
to nd and sustain employment.
64% o Job Seekers Allowance
claimants do not have access to a
car and two out o ve jobseekers
say lack o aordable transport
is a barrier to getting a job.
Although there is no denition o
Transport Poverty, according to
government research the poorest
th o households can spend nearly
a quarter o their income on the cost
o motoring.
Improving accessibility by bike and
on oot to the places we need to get
to on a daily basis is one o the most
equitable ways we can tackle these
problems, ensuring the least
advantaged have accessto the learning and employment
opportunities they need, regardless
o where they live. For example, in
Wales we teemed up with Save the
Children, Age Cymru, and Citizens
Advice Cymru to highlight transport
poverty and call or a range o
measures to give people better
alternatives to car use.
In Scotland, ollowing lobbying rom
Sustrans and others, including civic
society, the Scottish government
retained two capital budgets or
cycling: it continued its 9m
ring-enced Cycling, Walking and
Saer Streets sum, and it increased
Sustrans' grant unding to 25m
over the next three years. In
addition, Cycling Scotland also
retained their 1m a year revenue
unding or promotion o cycling
and cycle training through theBikeability scheme.

Environment
The transport sector accounts or
27% o the UK's CO2
emissions
but many o our everyday journeys
are short enough to walk or cycle.
We take a practical approach
oering realistic solutions to
encourage people to walk, cycle
and use public transport more...and it's working.
In 2011 there was a 15% increase
in the number o journeys on the
National Cycle Network
An incredible 484 million journeys
were made by 3.3 million
individuals.
I all the journeys made on the
National Cycle Network in 2011
had been made by a car, based
on average emissions, the
potential carbon dioxide saving
was 760,363 tonnes.
We're enabling everyday tasks
to be done on oot or by bike
10% o trips on the National Cycle
Network in 2011 were or shopping
and 28% were or work or education.
Reducing car use
Where we've worked with
households in Broxbourne,
Ipswich and Croxley Green,
providing people with tailored travel
inormation, we've seen impressive
reductions in car use:
Broxbourne: 761 miles per
household per year equivalent
to driving rom London to
Copenhagen
Ipswich: 544 miles per household
per year equivalent to driving
rom Cardi to Geneva
Croxley Green: 980 miles per
household per year equivalent
to driving rom Newcastle to Berlin
Our work in schools reducedcongestion on the school run
There was an 11% decrease in
everyday car journeys to school
where our ocers worked.
Enabling political change
In England, the Department or
Transport announced that they
had received 73 bids rom local
authorities or sustainable transport
projects in the rst o three rounds
o bidding or unding rom the Local
Sustainable Transport Fund, a undrst proposed by Sustrans in 2009.
In London we launched our
maniesto or the uture Mayoral
elections in 2012 A quality o
lie maniesto or transport in
our capital.
A potential 760,000 tonneso CO2 was saved bypeople using the NationalCycle Network.

Creating a school cycling
revolution
Sustrans works in schools
throughout the UK, running a wide
range o un and curriculum-relatedactivities to encourage pupils to
be more active.
In 2011, 11.5 million school
commuting trips were made on
the National Cycle Network.
New trac-ree links were created
to more than 100 schools, making
them saer and more accessible or
240,000 pupils.
Parents and teachers in schools
where weve worked elt that cycling
to school helped children arrive
more alert and ready or action,
with potential implications
or their educational attainment.
As a result o our work, parents eel
more condent about letting their
children cycle to school on roads.
The legacy o our work in schools
Even where there was little cycling
beore, many teachers eel that
their school has a strong cycling
culture once our ocers have
worked with pupils.
Our work in schools benets
the wider community too: unders
say that the schools we work with
become examples o good practice
in the local area, raising the prole
o cycling and encouraging other
schools to think about travel.

almost 270,000 pupils made over
495,000 journeys by bike or scooterover three weeks.
I each o these journeys replaced

530 tonnes o CO2
and there was
a potential saving to parents o over
250,000 in petrol costs.
Free range kids
In July 2011, we launched our
campaign to enable children to
have more reedom rom their
