Facts about tourism• International tourist arrivals have increased from 25 million globally in 1950, to 278 million in 1980, 527 million in 1995, and  1.18 billion in 2016. They are expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030.• The global travel and tourism industry creates approximately 11% of the world’s employment (direct & indirect) in 2016.• Travel and tourism represents approximately 10% of total global Gross Domestic Product  (US $7 trillion)

Tourism drawbacks• Tourism is directly related to travelling ,tourism cannot occur without travel • Traveling by various means such as trains,ships,buses,private vehicles causes pollution • Tourist at the spot is also responsible for pollution such as water pollution and land contamination by plastic , glass , and other non biodegradable wastes•  By generators and other equipment such  as CO2 fire extinguishers , etc green house effect.

Causes of green house effect• Seawater is expected to rise 70 cm in the next 10 years• 2015 was the warmest year by margin on record• For every 1 degree rise in temperature above 34 degrees Celsius, yields of rice, maize and wheat in tropical areas could drop by 10%

Solution• Sustainable tourism is about re-focusing and adapting.•  A balance must be found between limits and usage so that continuous changing, monitoring and planning ensure that tourism can be managed. This requires thinking long-term (10, 20+ years) and realising that change is often cumulative, gradual and irreversible. • Economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development must include the interests of all stakeholders including indigenous people, local communities, visitors, industry and government.

The three dimensions of sustainable tourism

Need for sustainable tourism• As more regions and countries develop their tourism industry, it produces significant impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and social systems. • The need for sustainable/responsible planning and management is imperative for the industry to survive as a whole.

• The main goal of sustainable tourism is to find a balance between our economic, environmental and social needs, and to bring these three issues in harmony.•  This maybe achieved through correct tourism management at tourism destinations, through our own actions when we are on holiday, through changes in governmental policies and/or through campaigning and lobbying by organisations.

• Despite the significant attention paid by tourism academics and practitioners to sustainable tourism development in recent years, there has been a consistent failure within the tourism literature to relate the concept to the theory , sustainable development.• it is argued that tourism development remains embedded in early modernisation theory whilst the principles of sustainable tourism over look the characteristics of the production and consumption of tourism.•  As a result, significant differences between the concepts of sustainable tourism and sustainable development are revealed, suggesting that the principles and objectives of sustainable development cannot be transposed onto the specific context of tourism.
