• The net change in forest area from 2000–2010 is estimated at loss of an area about the size of Costa Rica.2

• 15% of human induced global GHG emissions are from deforestation, forest degradation, peat land emissions (Natural Geoscience)

Every year, more than 30 million acres of natural forest are destroyed to meet the growing global demand for wood and agricultural products

Global net forest loss is 5.2 million ha/yr (2000-2 010)1

•Reduction in production has been due to economic slowdown & increasing demand for substitute products, such as laminates/plastics to replace timber based

•U.S.A. (27%), Canada (12%), Brazil (10%) & China (8%) together contribute nearly 60% of the timber log production in the world

U.S, Canada, Brazil and China account for 60% of gl obal timber log Consumption

US ranks Highest in Consumption of Timber Log, share 26% of the global timber log consumption.

CA

Canada (12%), China (11%) and Brazil (9%) together contribute nearly 34% of the timber log consumption in the world.

� Brazil, Indonesia & Malaysia account for 10% of world exports

Adoption of FSC certification in India has been increased from 2005-2012. A total of only 5 FM and 330 FM COC certificates have been issued in India.

Influencing industry towards sustainable wood trade

� Several conferences workshops , consultative meeting and training had been organized within Kerala, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on responsible and sustainable trade of forest products.

� Round table conferences and business to business meeting were organized to support responsible forestry through forest and trade network.

� Support establishment of FSC National Initiative in India, to promotes Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for timber, pulp and paper and encourages companies, including retailers and traders to produce and consume FSC Certified products.

� Created awareness on “credible forest certification” and the benefits to the key stake holders.
