INTRODUCTION
Sustainable Transport :
- Allows the basic access needs of individuals and societies to be met safely and in amannerconsistent with human and ecosystem health, and with equity within andbetween generations.
- Is affordable, operates efficiently, offers choice of transport mode, and supports a vibrant economy.
- Limits emissions and waste within the planet’s ability to absorb them, minimizes consumption of non-renewable resources, limits consumption of renewable resources to the sustainable yield level, reuses and recycles its components, and minimizes the use of land and the production of noise.

Indicator sustainable transportWith respect to society, transportation systems should be:a) Healthy, Comfortable, and Convenience.b) Providing choice of transport modes.c) Low noise.d) Safe for people and their property.
With respect to the economy, transportation systems should:a) Provide cost-effective service and capacity.b) Be financially affordable in each generation.c) Support vibrant, sustainable economic activity.
With respect to the environment, transportation systems should:a) Make use of land in a way that has little or no impact on the integrity of ecosystems.b) Use sparingly energy sources that are essentially not renewable or inexhaustible.c) Use other resources that are renewable or inexhaustible, achieved in part through the reuse of items and the
recycling of materials used in vehicles and infrastructure.d) Produce no more emissions and waste than can be accommodated by the planet's restorative ability.

IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORT IN INDIA
Condition in India prior to sustainable
- Country with large population- People do not aware of the role and importance of
urban transport- In need of strategies to achieve sustainable urban
transport.

India’s Government Strategies Towards Sustainability
Non-motorised modes of transport (NMT)
No. Strategy Implementation1. Finalised and issued the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP)
in 2006- Using NMT- Integrated multi-modes of transportation - Study concerns of road safety
2. Initiated demonstration projects with Global Environment Facility (GEF)
Projects in five selected cities in India by implementing :- 2 project of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) - 1 of Non motorised modesoftransport (NMT)- 2 of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
3. Strengthening the institutional set up - Setting up the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA)managed by JNNURM
- Financial assistance by the government to city that implements the UMTA
4. Initiating an ambitious capacity building programme - Training of 2,500 city/state staff over a period of five years- An academic programme to create a skilled manpower to enable cities to
recruit qualified professionals- Dissemination of information through local news- Arranging for safety certification of Guided Urban Transit Systems (GUTS)
5. Support to improve both road and rail based mass rapid transit (MRT) facilities
- 100 kilometres of MRT is operating in Delhi, and 250 Metro rail under construction in another five cities
- Providing dedicated lanes for bicycles and improving pedestrian facilities- Designing of the cycle rickshaw
6. Making emission norms increasingly stringent and improving quality of fuels
- Tightening the emission level of CO- Introduced the measurement of HC emissions in petrol vehicles
