Introduction
Denver International Airport (DEN) - in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon
2017 is pleased to host Sustainable BARKitecture dog house competition for area architects and firms.
BARKitecture challenges entrants to design and build sustainable doghouses, to be judged by Solar
Decathlon organizers, DEN management, our Canine Airport Therapy Squad (CATS) and members of the
community.
Entrants are asked to pick one of the CATS dogs as inspiration for their house, catering to the animal’s
size, personality and preferences. Designs submitted should incorporate renewable energy and/or
possess some sustainable feature such as rainwater collection, solar-powered light, fan, music, water
recirculation, reclaimed materials, dual purposes, insulation, passive cooling, etc.
Submitted concept drawings (see Appendix. B) will be reviewed and up to twelve (12) designs will be
chosen to move forward into construction. Final houses will be displayed on the outdoor DEN Plaza to
be enjoyed by thousands of travelers and hotel guests at the Westin Denver International Airport, and
upon conclusion of the display period, all dog house prototypes will be auctioned off for charity.
