Performance:Under the Focus’ new hood is the familiar 2.0L turbocharged engine, punching out 252hp and 270lb-ft of torque. Much more than what’s offered from rivals at VW or Honda, the ST’s straight-line performance is strong, punctuated by more than a hint of torque steer scrabble.

As a highway car, the no-shift passing response is very good. Lots of low-end torque means you can just leave the manual-only shifter in top gear and just let your left foot get you up to speed. Road noise from the 18” alloys and performance tires is less intrusive than in a Subaru WRX.

However, the ST doesn’t really wake up until the road gets twisty. The advantage of having a dedicated European performance arm for decades is that Ford’s hatchback offerings have been fighting off a much larger competitive segment than we experience in North America. Here, we contrast the ST against the GTI. There, they’ve got Peugeots and Renaults to contend with as well.

Besides that, the ST is very well equipped standard, with the only real options being navigation and a package containing dual-zone climate control and a 10-speaker audio upgrade. The latter is as punchy as the ST’s turbocharged engine, but subtracts trunk space with a rear-mounted subwoofer.

Official fuel economy figures for the ST are quite good at 7.3L/100kms on the highway, and 10.2L/100kms in the city. Observed real-world economy is really going to depend on how often you ignore the upshift indicator and just floor it, but the ST can handle a gentle commute without being too painful at the pump.

Green Light:Characterful, engaging drive; usable passenger and cargo space; grippy seats

The Ford Focus is a sensibly-sized and practical hatchback, suitable for ferrying around children and picking up the week’s groceries.

Ah, but this is the Focus ST, an over boosted hooligan with big wheels, big brakes, punchy

turbocharged acceleration, and a face like a disgruntled catfish. It’s a genuine hot hatch, complete with seats that wouldn’t be out of place in the Shelby Mustangs.

Ford has a long history of quick compacts overseas, but its North American audience is still getting used to these. When we think “fast Ford,” we usually think “Mustang,” but something with four doors and a usable hatchback is sometimes far more practical.

With the incoming all-wheel-drive Focus RS currently stealing the headlines for its STI-beating power output and hoonish Drift Mode, here’s a look at the regular strength fast Ford. It’s quick, but how does it work as an all-rounder?

Design:Building on the standard Focus is good news for the ST – already a sharp and stylish design, the Focus recently benefited from a refresh including a new front end and restyled 18” wheels. The ST’s headlights now include standard LED daytime running lights, and a power bulge in the hood.

Many hot hatchback rivals to the ST are pretty tame – the VW GTI, for instance, is a relatively genteel machine. Ford’s version is no wallflower, shouting its intentions to the world with a huge front grille, Lamborghini-ish centre-exit exhaust, and available rally-stripes.

On the plus side, people see you coming. On the negative side, people with badges see you coming. That centre-exit exhaust is also a pain for anyone who would wish to upgrade their muffler, as most aftermarket offerings look completely silly when bolted on.

Still, despite the big grille and obvious wheels, the ST can still manage to fly under the radar in a neutral colour.

instrument cluster some time ago, and now has massaged the dash with a bit more soft-touch material and a few extra cubbies. It’s just what you need, including a little pocket for your smartphone right next to the USB plug in.

For some reason, Toyota weighs passenger space more heavily than cargo area, so while the Yaris has usefully-sized rear seats, the trunk space is a little on the small side. Lift the lid and you’ll see the culprit – a space-saver spare tire crammed into a small area at an angle. The seats fold down, but there’s none of the cleverness of Honda’s magic seat system here.

Performance:Under the hood, the Yaris has a 1.5L four-cylinder engine making a modest 106hp at 6000rpm and 103lb/ft of peak torque at 4000rpm. The standard transmission offering is still a five-speed manual, but the only available automatic is a four-speed.

Sounds pretty low-tech, right? Well, it is, but there’s something of an advantage to that. While it’s not as quick as a dual-clutch or as miserly as a CVT, the Yaris’ four-pot-plus-four-speed combination is bone-reliable, even if slightly neglected. Then there’s the Yaris’ other major party trick: it weighs practically nothing.

“Simplify and add lightness,” that was the old adage of Colin Chapman’s Lotus, and while Toyota might not have involved Lotus in the building of their efficient runabout, they certainly espoused those ideals. The Yaris weighs about as much as a first-generation Miata, and that makes it relatively fun to drive. It bounces over imperfections in the pavement without too much fuss and hurtles around the corners with gusto.

The four-speed transmission is tuned for efficiency, not quick-shifting or extracting power, and the small-displacement four-banger doesn’t have much power to give anyway. However, there’s so little inertial resistance from the Yaris’ curb-weight, that you can just pogo the car off down the road without difficulty.

The driving position is slightly on the odd side. As the steering wheel

tilts only, and doesn’t telescope, a longer-legged driver ends up sitting with his or her arms straight out, almost like an old Ferrari. Even so, it’s not uncomfortable, and when you get the Yaris out on the highway, you can note that the four-speed is actually quite high-

geared. It’s relatively quiet in the cabin, and the chassis feels stiff.

Behind the scenes, Toyota’s put a few extra welds into the structure

of the Yaris, and while it’s not about to do battling around a racetrack, the move

has firmed up the feel of the car. It feels very composed despite the small power output, and more than up to the task as a commuter.

Features:As mentioned, there’s no real need to consider options other than which transmission to pick on the Yaris. While slightly costlier than other manufacturer’s base models, the little Toyota has pretty much everything you need: USB connectivity, a touchscreen, keyless entry, air-conditioning, nine air-bags – it’s all there.

The SE model adds in a few luxuries like leather-wrapped control surfaces, sportier seats, and foglights. Nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Fuel economy is very good, as you’d expect, with official 2015 five-cycle figures set at 7.8L/100kms in the city and 6.6L/100kms on the highway. There are larger cars that’ll do better at high speed, thanks to slipperier shapes, but the Yaris does well, hitting its numbers in real-world driving.

Green Light:Nimble handling; fun-to-drive; quiet cabin; sensible packaging

Stop Sign:Love it or leave it styling; low-tech powertrain; lack of cargo space

“It’s a car!” That was the old tag-line for the Yaris commercials. Lest you think they protest a bit too much, the idea was pretty simple: here’s a little car with everything you need, and not much more than that.

Personally, that’s my kind of machine. Just the facts, ma’am, - no need for 18-way seats and body-roll-controlling hydraulics,

and on-board infotainment systems that can scan your brainwaves to find the best radio station. Nope, sometimes it’s better if a car is just a car.

Toyota’s put a fresh new face on their smallest offering, and by “fresh,” I of course mean “scary.” Yikes, that’s one aggressive looking little eco-pod!

So, is the machine behind the fright mask still packing the essentials, or is there something more sinister going on here?

Design:Well that’s certainly a unique take up front. No-one could accuse Toyota’s design department of being afraid to take a risk or two. What once was a tad on the bland side now looks like a cross between a Tiki mask and a Mexican Wrestler.

It’s all just for show, so don’t worry – the Yaris isn’t going to bite. In fact, take a brief walkaround to peek at its other four angles, and the car remains as it was before, an inoffensive and handsome little economy car. It’s got wheelcovers. It’s got a hidden exhaust pipe. If it weren’t for the mean-mugging front, you’d call it cute.

Also, you won’t be calling it cheap. While this is the most-basic version of the four-door Yaris hatchback, it still comes with body-coloured door-handles and mirrors. It’s inexpensive, but the exterior doesn’t trumpet it.

Environment:The inside is much the same – not costly, but not bargain basement either. Toyota has fitted the LE which pretty much everything you need in an entry-level car. There are standard power door locks and windows, cruise control, and even a touchscreen interface.

Especially for such a diminutive little car, it’s quite roomy in here. Toyota ditched the centre-mounted

New cars are purchased or leased to provide a reliable mode of transporta-tion. But some vehicles malfunction even when they are fresh off of the dealership lot. Other times manufacturers or safety watchdog groups determine that cer-tain cars and trucks have an issue that requires a recall to keep roadways safe. Vehicle recall statistics are difficult to pin down. That’s because there is no stan-dard rate of recalls per year, as recalls depend on safety statistics for particular makes and models. For example, in 2009 more than 40 million Toyota vehicles were recalled due to a faulty gas pedal.

An automotive recall is how manu-facturers inform drivers that there could be something about their cars or trucks that presents a risk of injury or property damage. The recall may be indepen-dently conducted by the manufacturer or ordered by a safety group, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration. The recall involves the manufac-turer providing a free, safe and effective remedy for the faulty component.

When a recall is announced, driv-ers may not have to immediately visit a dealership to have the problem cor-rected. Owners should wait for an official letter. The letter will narrow down which vehicles are affected. There should be a specific window of time presented in which the vehicle can be repaired. Ve-hicle owners are urged to pay attention to the performance of their cars or trucks to see if they are exhibiting any prob-lems. If so, schedule an appointment for repair according to the recall instructions provided.

The notification letter should include the risk of hazard posed by the problem as well as the free remedy and how long the repair should take. There also should be a description of what an owner can do if he or she is unable to have the problem remedied within a reasonable amount of time and without charge.

If repair work has been done on a vehicle prior to knowledge of the recall, owners may be eligible for reimburse-ment for their expenses, provided they kept their receipts. While reimbursement for damages that the defect may have caused are not covered by recalls, own-ers may be able to solicit reimbursement privately.

The following are steps to take when informed of a recall:

1. Contact the dealer service manager and explain that you are inquiring about work required as part of a recall.

2. If the manager has not remedied the situation and provided the next steps,

contact the manufacturer, which should be able to handle the situation.

3. If all else fails, Americans can con-tact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at www.recalls.gov. Cana-dians can contact Transport Canada at www.tc.gc.ca. -MC
