However, taste is a subjective thing, and there’s something to be said about the simplicity of the Jaguar’s controls, dial-shifter, and generally uncluttered layout. Were it not for the way infotainment functionality is impacted by being squeezed a bit by that small touchscreen, the ergonomics would be just fine.

Performance:Jaguar offers the XF in Canada with a 2.0L turbo engine making 240hp, a 3.0L supercharged V6 making 340hp, and a 5.0L supercharged V8 making 510hp. This week’s tester had the middle option, and while I briefly wished for the bonkers V8, the feeling went away every time I drove past a gas station.

The supercharged six is a lovely little motor, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that’s also well up to the task. This being the Luxury model, both the ride and feel of the drive are a little on the soft side, a little of that grace that forms the old Jaguar byline of Grace, Pace, and Space.

Punt the car into sport mode and start asking for a little more from the engine and transmission, and the XF responds with surprising alacrity. While not as fresh as the aluminum-intensive construction that’s coming our way with the new XE sedan and F-Pace crossover, the XF’s chassis is actually very finely tuned.

The all-wheel-drive system has no issues putting the power down from a launch, where the XF feels considerably faster than its quoted 0-100km time of 6.4 seconds. Once on the move, the system reverts to a rear-drive bias that hustles quite nicely, even if this is the softer, luxury model. The steering isn’t super-communicative, feeling like it’s tuned primarily for comfort, but there’s plenty of grippy confidence here to be had.

And while we’re on the subject of confidence, let’s talk about the Anglo-Indian Elephant in the room: reliability. Traditionally, Jags have been just the thing to buy if you wanted a car that self-changed both oil and coolant by leaking both all over your driveway.

The XF feels like something unique and special

Like all modern complicated luxury sedans, I wouldn’t want to be on

the receiving end of a service bill in fifteen years time. However, under parent-company Tata’s control, both Jaguar and Land Rover have improved by – pardon the pun – leaps and bounds, to the point where they’re not far off the German competition. And if you’re going to lease one during the warranty coverage

period anyway, it’s up to your service adviser to keep a stiff

upper lip.

Compared to the fleets of 5-series and E-class Mercedes-Benzes I passed,

the XF did indeed feel like something unique and special. Just the job a Jaguar’s

supposed to do.

Features:As mentioned, the XF is a little behind the times in terms of infotainment. The touchscreen navigation works just fine, but hooking up an iPod took a little longer than expected, and there was no Bluetooth streaming audio.

However, for 67,500, this Luxury-level XF came with a 10-speaker audio system, a stop-start system, and a backup camera. It also had an optional heated windscreen, which might not be an absolute necessity in the lower mainland.

Fuel economy for all-wheel-drive and a supercharged V6 isn’t bad, rated at 13.9L/100kms city and 8.8L/100kms highway. And observed economy hit right between those parameters, thanks to some mild weather.

Green Light:Good feature load-out; smooth, comfortable ride; easy-to-use infotainment; excellent space

Stop Sign:Sedate interior styling; cramped infotainment; retained value and reliability not as good as competition

The F-Type, the F-Type, the F-Type. Ever wonder how Emma Watson’s sisters feel? Well, the Jaguar XF does.

However, while the pretty two-door sportscar gets all the paparazzi’s attention, the four-door sedan continues to best it in sales. There’s a practicality here, one that’s doubled by

traction provided by all-wheel-drive.

The XF, then, is the Jaguar bought by those who want a little everyday liveability with their style. However, without the glittering halo cast by the spotlight, how does this more-sensible Jaguar hold up in the ordinary world?

Design:First off, no, it’s not quite as gorgeous as the F-Type, but the XF is no shrinking violet. It’s not a fussy shape, a silhouette made with classic English understatement, but there’s just enough standing out here to be unique.

The side vents are better-executed than some of the German competition, the grille isn’t so large as to be overbearing but adds a nice bright spot of chrome, and the snarling, red-ringed Jaguar’s head in front takes the place of beat-you-over-the-head-with-it aggression you find in other marquees. It’s an older design, but one that’s aged well.

This being the Luxury model, the wheel choice is a 19” multi-spoke alloy that’s again not all that fussy. If you’d like your cat’s-paws to have a little more claw, the Sport versions have really great-looking 20” grey wheels.

Environment:Powering up the XF is done by pressing a “beating” red starter button for a second or so, causing the engine to fire and the air-vents to slowly rotate open. It’s a neat bit of theatre, similar to that found inside the F-Type.

However, the XF is a bit more like the now-defunct XK coupe on the inside. There’s nothing about the interior that jumps out at you as a wow factor, and the navigation and infotainment screen is a little on the small side.

There’s Old World, and then there’s getting a little bit old. The XF was launched in 2008 as a 2009 model, and on the inside at least, it’s now outstyled by the competition.

MyFord Touch continues to improve, but can still be considered to be the Achilles’ heel of the Focus. Screen fonts are small, and a bit of a reach while on the move. However, voice commands work far better than on the system’s original rollout, and while the learning curve is a bit steep, the system works well with familiarity.

Performance:Under the Focus’ new hood is the familiar 2.0L turbocharged engine, punching out 252hp and 270lb-ft of torque. Much more than what’s offered from rivals at VW or Honda, the ST’s straight-line performance is strong, punctuated by more than a hint of torque steer scrabble.

As a highway car, the no-shift passing response is very good. Lots of low-end torque means you can just leave the manual-only shifter in top gear and just let your left foot get you up to speed. Road noise from the 18” alloys and performance tires is less intrusive than in a Subaru WRX.

However, the ST doesn’t really wake up until the road gets twisty. The advantage of having a dedicated European performance arm for decades is that Ford’s hatchback offerings have been fighting off a much larger competitive segment than we experience in North America. Here, we contrast the ST against the GTI. There, they’ve got Peugeots and Renaults to contend with as well.

The closest rival for power-on thrust might be the Mazdaspeed3, a car on borrowed time, but unlike Mazda, Ford doesn’t tame the torque steer inherent in front-wheel-drive cars by cutting turbo boost. Instead, a trick front

suspension and brake-based torque vectoring give the ST a chance to really

bite into the corner and then scrabble out the other side. The more aggressive you are, the happier it gets – and the bigger the tire bill.

That’s not all. Most hot hatchbacks display nice safe understeer if you push them a bit hard. Ford, on the other hand, has engineered

in lift-off oversteer into their little hooligan. Pop off the accelerator

sharply mid-corner, and the back end comes around like its on casters. This

behaviour feels tamed compared to the first editions of the ST, but is still present and

still something you won’t find elsewhere.

Overall, it’s a faster and more thrilling driving experience than you get from the more buttoned-down Germanic competition. Fly under the radar in the latter, or by the seat of your pants in this thing: it’s your choice.

Besides that, the ST is very well equipped standard, with the only real options being navigation and a package containing dual-zone climate control and a 10-speaker audio upgrade. The latter is as punchy as the ST’s turbocharged engine, but subtracts trunk space with a rear-mounted subwoofer.

Official fuel economy figures for the ST are quite good at 7.3L/100kms on the highway, and 10.2L/100kms in the city. Observed real-world economy is really going to depend on how often you ignore the upshift indicator and just floor it, but the ST can handle a gentle commute without being too painful at the pump.

Green Light:Characterful, engaging drive; usable passenger and cargo space; grippy seats

Stop Sign:Seats maybe a little too grippy; occasionally frustrating infotainment; polarizing looks

Ah, but this is the Focus ST, an over boosted hooligan with big wheels, big brakes, punchy

turbocharged acceleration, and a face like a disgruntled catfish. It’s a genuine hot hatch, complete with seats that wouldn’t be out of place in the Shelby Mustangs.

Ford has a long history of quick compacts overseas, but its North American audience is still getting used to these. When we think “fast Ford,” we usually think “Mustang,” but something with four doors and a usable hatchback is sometimes far more practical.

With the incoming all-wheel-drive Focus RS currently stealing the headlines for its STI-beating power output and hoonish Drift Mode, here’s a look at the regular strength fast Ford. It’s quick, but how does it work as an all-rounder?

Design:Building on the standard Focus is good news for the ST – already a sharp and stylish design, the Focus recently benefited from a refresh including a new front end and restyled 18” wheels. The ST’s headlights now include standard LED daytime running lights, and a power bulge in the hood.

Many hot hatchback rivals to the ST are pretty tame – the VW GTI, for instance, is a relatively genteel machine. Ford’s version is no wallflower, shouting its intentions to the world with a huge front grille, Lamborghini-ish centre-exit exhaust, and available rally-stripes.

On the plus side, people see you coming. On the negative side, people with badges see you coming. That centre-exit exhaust is also a pain for anyone who would wish to upgrade their muffler, as most aftermarket offerings look completely silly when bolted on.

Still, despite the big grille and obvious wheels, the ST can still manage to fly under the radar in a neutral colour.

Many people prefer leasing an automobile to buying one, and leasing can be more advanta-geous than buying in various ways. For example, leasing allows drivers who cannot afford to purchase a new and more reliable vehicle the opportunity to drive such a car or truck, at a cost that is considerably less over the long haul than buying the vehicle outright. Leasing also makes it possible for drivers who prefer newer cars to exchange their automobiles every few years, saving them the expense of maintaining a car as it ages.

When leasing an automobile for the first time, motorists may not be aware of certain things about leasing that could benefit them over the course of their leases. The following are a few such things that drivers may want to consider when negotiating an automobile lease at the dealership.

• Mile restrictions are not set in stone. Standard leases typically limit drivers to 12,000 miles per year over the life of the lease. In such an agreement, a three-year lease would allow lessees to drive 36,000 miles in the vehicle. Any additional miles on the vehicle when it is turned in at the end of the lease would incur a penalty. But mileage limits are negotiable, and drivers who think they will exceed 12,000 miles per year can tailor their leases to allow for addition-al miles. Extra miles will cost more money, but that extra expense will likely pale in comparison to excess mileage charges, making it well worth the investment for drivers to negotiate extra miles into their lease at the time of signing.

• You may need to pay a substantial initial down payment. Monthly lease terms are favor-able to men and women who cannot afford to finance a car or those who want to avoid long-term financing with hefty monthly payments. But many leases require lessees to pay sub-stantial down payments upon agreeing to the lease. If such a down payment proves a hurdle you cannot clear, then it’s important to know that some leases do not require a down pay-ment at all, while others require only a minimal payment upfront. However, such leases may be exclusive to drivers with exceptional credit.

• You can comparison shop with a lease. Much like you would comparison shop when buying a car, you can do the same when leasing. After a dealer runs your credit and/or estimates your down payment, you may feel as though you cannot afford to lease a new car. But you have many options to choose from when look-ing for an auto lease, and each one is likely to make a different offer. If you persevere and do your research, you ultimately may end up with a lease that puts you in a new car at an afford-able price.

• Gap insurance protects you in case of a theft or wreck. Gap insurance (which stands for guar-anteed asset protection) is available but not standard for an automobile lease. Gap insur-ance protects lessees and covers their remain-ing lease payments if a car is stolen or wrecked while the lease is ongoing. Some lessees choose to accept gap insurance, while others do not. The latter group is taking a risk that the car will not be stolen or wrecked during the life of the lease. If it is, the driver will then be responsible for the monthly payments even if he or she no longer has the vehicle. Drivers in the former group will not be on the hook for such pay-

ments. Some lessees never use their gap insur-ance, but the peace of mind it provides is worth the investment for many drivers.

Leasing is a great way for drivers to drive new automobiles they otherwise might not be able to afford. But drivers should familiarize them-selves with the ins and outs of leasing before signing on the dotted line. – MC
