Leading Bioeconomy Consultants

Industrial Process News is proud to announce that XRF Scientific has been selected as our Laboratory Equipment Manufacturer of the

Month, for their expert in-house manufacture and distribution of specialist laboratory instruments.

XRF Scientific’s impressive history extends back to 1972, which saw the first commercial XRF flux production by the Founding Director David Brown at Sigma Flux. The next 30 years witnessed even more firsts, with the sale of the first ‘MFM’ and Phoenix automated gas fusion machines, the commencement of Analytical Platinum Supplies (APS) Labware, and the first Modutemp electrical fusion machine. In 2006, XRF was listed as a public company on the Australian Securities Exchange, and since then they have expanded across the globe.

They have manufacturing, sales and support facilities in Europe and Canada and distributors in the United States, South America, Africa, Middle East and Asia.

As the only company worldwide to manufacture flux, labware and fusion machines in-house, XRF Scientific’s equipment and chemicals are distributed to production mines, construction material companies and commercial analytical laboratories all around the world. Their technology is used to measure the composition and purity of materials in industries such as metal and mining, construction materials, chemicals and petrochemicals, with applications in industrial quality control and process control for various manufacturing processes. This means XRF Scientific’s equipment helps customers to improve product quality and performance, increase productivity and yield, and reduce downtime and waste.

We spoke to Frederic Davidts about some of the company’s products: “One of our particular ranges is the xrWeigh Flux Weighing machines, which help to take the difficulties and inconveniences out of weighing flux, as well as improving

accuracy. We also have the Platinum Labware range, which includes dishes, moulds and crucibles.”

There are two xrWeigh machines available, with a single position option or a carousel system which takes either vials or platinum crucibles. The single position machine offers fast and accurate measurement of flux and other powder based chemicals for precision applications. In a typical laboratory, this reduces the time needed for manual weighing by up to 75%.

Simple to operate with an easy user interface, it requires little or no training and has simple touch screen operation for the selection of target weight and range. It also boasts an in-built stability checking system, an adjustable load receptor with overload detection internal calibration weight, and a force compensation technology weighing system, all of which combine to improve accuracy and repeatability for the user.

The xrWeigh Carousel comprises of all these features, but also allows the user to weigh 30 vials of flux in less than 20 minutes, with simple operation and easy to clean equipment. With the technology to weigh either granular or micro-beads flux types with no extra accessories, the Carousel system removes a repetitive task from the laboratory environment and saves the user valuable time.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of platinum products, XRF Scientific’s Platinum Labware range showcases their unique expertise in the area. Using years of combined experience to create their extensive range, it comes in either standard configurations or they can help with the design and manufacture of specialised products, supporting customers to meet all of their laboratory needs from basic utensils to intricate individual designs. The products are primarily used by industrial professionals for mineralogical analysis. Their platinum crucibles and moulds can be used for analytical spectroscopy for identifying and quantifying minerals of interest, such as copper and iron ore, in small geological samples.

Electronic Production Equipment Company of the Year

Industrial Process News is proud to announce that Zen Production Equipment Limited (ZPEL) has been selected as

our Electronic Production Equipment Company of the Year, for their outstanding commitment to supplying the finest quality equipment for the electronics manufacturing industry.

Established in 2006, ZPEL has since developed a stellar reputation as a reliable supplier of the most appropriate electronic production equipment for each company they work with. Their management team has over 30 years’ experience in all the key aspects of electronics production equipment, and they have travelled to a wide range of countries in order to find the highest quality products in each sector of electronics production engineering. This means that their equipment is unrivalled for value in the marketplace, and each customer can guarantee that they are receiving the highest quality products available.

Speaking to Managing Director, Peter Clarke, he expressed that he is thrilled that ZPEL has been selected as our Company of the Year: “The past 12 months have seen a good order book as well as some very interesting large projects which are still being worked on. We are extremely happy and of course proud to have won the award and to have been recognised for our hard work.”

The majority of ZPEL’s equipment is sourced from the industry’s leading suppliers, all of which sell to businesses worldwide including many of the world’s leading OEM and CEM electronics companies. Some of ZPEL’s most loyal customers include manufacturers such as ZF Group, Sony, Honeywell, McLaren and Kentec, as well as an extensive selection of subcontract manufacturers.

One of their suppliers, Asscon, specialises in Vapour Phase Technology, which is also known as Condensation Soldering. Their equipment uses vapour as an energy transfer medium, which is one of the most efficient procedures for heating assemblies. Asscon products therefore are ideal for use from prototype to final production. They save time and money in the workplace and boast low operating costs as a result of low energy requirements.

Another leading supplier, Inertec, has released the new CUBE.460 soldering system, which is a production cell for small and medium batch sizes. Users can perform THT assembly directly on the machine thanks to the loading shuttle, as well as improve the quality of the soldering

when compared to manual processes. The system’s simplified graphical programming allows quick entry into selective soldering technology, and the user can benefit from the professional functions and proven technology available in larger systems, such as process monitoring or bus-capable DC servomotors.

Heller, another of ZPEL’s excellent suppliers, are a world leader in Reflow Oven Technology, using the most advanced production systems available in order to provide the user with consistent performance for high Mix / high volume requirements. The ovens also help to minimise preventative maintenance costs as well as taking up minimal floor space. The Mark5 Series delivers up to a 40% reduction in electrical and nitrogen consumption, meaning the machines have the best overall value in the industry.

In 2018, ZPEL took on two new excellent suppliers, Aurotek in Taiwan, and Essemtec AG in Switzerland. Aurotek supply a range of PCBA profiling equipment ranging from simple desktop solutions to high volume inline systems. Essemtec AG offer a range of pick and place systems, dispensing systems and component storage solutions. “As far as we are aware,” says Peter, “their pick and place systems are the only ones that can offer dispensing on the same platform as pick & place.”

Essemtec AG supply smart and highly flexible SMT Solutions, including the Fox and Puma Pick & Place systems which can offer multiple heads for P&P, as well as dispensing on a single platform. The Fox and Puma can both be used as stand-alone systems or be configured as inline solutions, and there are also the Spider and Tarantula systems which have a range of nozzle technologies purely for dispensing. All the systems use mineral cast beds for vibration free production as well as benefiting from no warping caused by thermal drift. They use linear motors throughout in order to give the highest accuracy with zero maintenance, and have one of the most comprehensive software packages available. As well as these, Essemtec AG has the Cubus and Cubus Large Component Towers, which offer the flexible storage of SMD reels in a range of sizes, trays, and boxes. The towers reduce logistic problems by 95% and offer full interface to most production systems and all major ERP and material management.

ZPEL are based in Long Eaton, just outside Nottingham, and in January 2019 they moved to a new location across the road from their previous office. We asked Peter about what this means for the company’s future: “At our new premises, we can now locate everything centrally. This gives us the opportunity to service our customers and suppliers far more efficiently. We have the possibility to have a demonstration area for our equipment here as well, and intend to bring in some key equipment so we can

demonstrate it to potential customers.”

With an impressive 12 months behind them, Zen Production Equipment Limited are cementing their status as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of electronic production equipment, offering dedicated customer service

and excellent after sales support. If you would like to find out more information, head to their website or use the contact details below.

Amazon Filters reports that coatings manufacturers are installing their

SupaClean contained filtration system prior to filling lines to remove impurities such as skins, coagulants and undispersed pigments from their final product.

Faced with declining support and patchy availability of a discontinued enclosed filtration systems from an alternative supplier, the SupaClean system is widely reported to produce better-quality product with a reduction in filter / labour costs for both solvent and aqueous based coatings production processes.

Sharing the same dimensions as the discontinued filtration system the

SupaClean system also provides the benefit of being a direct retrofit.

The SupaClean contained filtration system consists of high-performance filter cartridges from Amazon Filters enclosed inside two sealed plastic bags. This proprietary design results in the filters and any process fluids being contained inside a secure assembly, providing isolation of the product and filters. Changing out filters using SupaClean assemblies is quick and simple reducing the traditional high operational costs associated with cleaning and changing production filters. Each filter assembly can be simply and quickly lifted out of the

housing and replaced by a new unit.

As each SupaClean filter unit is supplied already assembled this eliminates the risk of operators not installing filters correctly and the risk filter by-pass occurring. As a consequence, the SupaClean system is ideally suited to the batch production filtration of top-quality coatings.

The smart way to Industry 4.0 with PROFINET based technologies

The success of 2018 flowed into January 2019 with three orders for SSSC model Stainless Steel Magnetic Separators. All three orders are for different customers with specific

metal separation objectives.

“This is a fantastic way to start 2019,” said Dave Hills, Head of Sales. “Interest in the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator has never been higher. We are continually undertaking tests for customers, which will undoubtedly develop into orders as we progress through the year.”

Bunting Magnetics is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of magnetic separators and metal detectors for the recycling, quarrying and mining industries. Their wide range of metal separation and detection equipment is manufactured at their Master Magnets facility in Redditch, just outside Birmingham, UK. The Stainless Steel Magnetic SeparatorThe Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator has an extremely high powered magnetic head pulley to separate work hardened stainless steel. A standard Magnetic Separator removes strongly magnetic

materials from the feed prior to passing over the SSSC. Commonly, an Eddy Current Separator also removes all non-ferrous metals. A vibratory feeder feeds the remaining fraction onto the conveyor belt of the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator. As the material enters the strong magnetic field, weakly magnetic metals such as fragmented and work-hardened stainless steel, and even printed circuit boards are attracted and separated.

Applications for the Ordered Stainless Steel Magnetic SeparatorsAll three Stainless Steel Magnetic Separators have a 900mm wide magnetic field. The three projects are:

Project A – Shredded PVC Window FramesThe customer had previously purchased Bunting Drawer Filter Magnets to remove ferrous metal from the shredded PVC. Following onsite discussions, tests took place at the Master Magnets testing facility. The initial tests demonstrated 100% removal of the stainless steel including the door mechanisms and hinges. The customer visited Master Magnets to witness a larger scale test. These confirmed the separation performance of the original test and the client confirmed the order.

Project B – Car FragInitial discussions with the client took place at the IFAT exhibition in 2018. The customer has a very specific fraction of metal scrap originating from car frag containing valuable stainless steel. Tests took place at the Master Magnets testing facility. These met the separation objectives of the customer, who then confirmed the order for their first unit.

Project C – WEEE and other metal scrapThe Israel-based recycling company first met Bunting at the

recent IERC Conference in Austria. After listening to the “Magnetic Separation of Stainless Steels” presentation by Don Suderman, Bunting Magnetics’ Material Handling Product Manager, they met the Bunting team on their stand. The customer confirmed the order shortly after the end of the congress.

Ongoing Projects“As well as these orders, we are working with recycling companies based across Europe on specific projects,” said Dave Hills. “We are conducting many tests every week, with an increasing number of samples. It is a busy and exciting time for our technicians.”

Switched on industrial safety technology provider Bernstein AG’s

latest product represents a really smart safety move at a time when the ongoing merging of automation and IT see Industry 4.0 move from vision to reality.

The company, based on the Westgate Park Industrial Estate in Aldridge, Walsall, has introduced the non-contact Smart Safety Sensor SRF, to protect those working in Smart

Factories from injury.

The SRF – an abbreviation of Safety RFID – is an especially compact sensor which monitors moveable separating protective equipment such as flaps, doors and protection hoods. If, for any reason, these separating safety devices fail to close properly, the SRF immediately shuts down machines and equipment – or prevents them from starting.

In developing this new product, Bernstein has paid particular attention to the diagnostic system accompanying the sensor which provides a large amount of data, making it available centrally and flexibly as an aid to intelligent production.

One Sensor, two Signals: Rotational Speed Sensor with an integrated Temperature Sensor

M8-rotational speed sensors and ABZ sensors from RHEINTACHO detect temperature additionally.

With both above mentioned speed

sensor series, RHEINTACHO is beginning to integrate temperature recording in addition to rotational speed measurement. Further sensor series are now being developed.

And with the ABZ-sensor, RHEINTACHO is even going a step further: the recording of

rotational direction and position are also included.

For recording temperature, an NTC temperature element with the following specifications is used: ± 1,5 °C above the total operating range, NTC 4.7 kOhm, ±1 % @ R25; B25/85-

value: 3830 K. Recording can of course be application/customer-specific in combination with other components.

Depending on the application, the evaluation of the temperature signal has to be adapted to the differing installation conditions. In hydraulic applications, the homogenizing effect is supported by the hydraulic fluid. In electro-motors, the use of a temperature signal side in a speed sensor requires significantly more adaptation as the installation position has very different ambient conditions from the common installation position of the temperature sensor.

The indisputable advantage of being able to call up several parameters at the same time is still actual. The cost advantages are complex and are not only limited to the installation costs, but also do not include requiring further sensor access gates.

The advantages are obvious: n Material costs: one complete sensor with its own electronics, own housing and connection interface are saved. n Installation effort: complete elimination of one installation process n Design simplification: Saving an additional sensor access including all possible side effects like improving design freedom and reducing leakage opportunity.

Wolfgang Sexauer, Sales Manager, “At first glance, the idea is captivating and logical, as is every good idea. However, as usual, we can certainly say that the problem was in the detail. Especially when considering the realization of the series product, many challenges had to be overcome. But now the products are available, and sales are developing above our expectations. We are sure further series will follow.”

Process & Packaging Machinery Specialists of the Month

Hot on the heels of its fatigue testing facility, William Hughes has added salt spray testing to its cannon of

quality control procedures.

Salt spray or salt fog testing exposes springs and other components to a saline fog environment in order to ascertain the corrosion resistance of the material of which they’re made or the surface coating thereof. A controlled saline situation will show how long it takes for a component to accede to rust or other oxides, if indeed it succumbs at all.

Equipment required for the salt spray chamber comprises the holding tank with its salt solution of between 4 – 6% pH and the salt spray cabinet itself where the salt water solution is atomised using pressurised air. The samples to be tested are then exposed to this extremely corrosive saline fog for the requisite amount of time, which can be days or weeks depending on the standard to be achieved.

Regular daily tests ensure that temperature and the specific gravity of the salt solution are maintained at a level consistent with ASTM B117, an internationally recognised salt spray standard.

The salt spray test is generally applied to items coated in,

for example, Delta-tone® or KTL-Black. These coatings, used in the aerospace and automotive industries, typically are required to meet specifications which include a number of hours of salt spray testing. The requirements that William Hughes meet range from 48 hours to over 600 hours of salt spray testing.

Eight wastes identification checklistThe eight wastes

identification checklist from Mettler Toledo is a template to support laboratory managers to carry out an efficiency audit of their lab.

This checklist provides a simple way to measure the current status for any sized lab, and can be tailored to individual requirements.

Previously ‘The Typical 8 wastes in the laboratory’ guide introduced an explanation of these 8 wastes, with typical laboratory examples, and recommendations for how to reduce or eliminate waste in these situations.

The latest identification checklist takes it one step further by providing a template to measure the efficiency of a specific laboratory based on

the occurrence of waste in the workflows.

This checklist is organised into 8 sections, based on the 8 wastes from Lean principles. It consists of a series of criteria with recommended target values that should be met. Based on the entries recorded during the audit a total score is calculated with a maximum of 33.

Any scored below 20 shows significant potential for improvement.

Plymouth-based Waterjet Industries re-financed their state-of-the-art machinery to raise

£80,000 with Henry Howard Finance to complete a management buyout.

Launched in 2007, Waterjet Industries aims to be the first choice for any water cutting requirements. A waterjet is an industrial tool that’s capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using high pressure water. With two precision waterjet machines, Waterjet Industries work with businesses in numerous sectors including aerospace, automotive, marine, oil and gas, power generation and precision engineering.

Waterjet cutting technology is also more environmentally friendly than traditional precision cutting technology as there are no noxious gases or liquids used, nor hazardous vapours. Daniel Stanley, Managing Director at Waterjet Industries, had managed to personally raise some of the funding he needed to complete the management buyout but

needed a further injection of cash to get it over the line, and this is where the team at Henry Howard Finance were able to lend a hand. Daniel chose to re-finance his two waterjet cutters as collateral for the loan.

Now, as sole managing director at Waterjet Industries, Daniel aims to expand his business through operating the machinery 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This means that he can ultimately take on more business and recruit more staff.

An organisation with a global customer base, Langley Alloys is one of the world’s leading suppliers of unique metals for demanding

applications. Distributing stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, nickel and copper alloys, the organisation’s products are used in some of the harshest of conditions – this including everything from subsea environments through to the chemical and process industries.

Known as the “Home of Super Duplex”, Langley Alloys has a clear focus on this particular family of alloys. They developed the world’s first super duplex alloy in 1969, widely recognised as Ferralium® 255. This 25%Cr stainless steel is specified by leading oil companies for the production of downhole tooling, by pump and valve manufacturers and also for the production of high-strength fasteners. It was even used in the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty in the 1980’s!

In addition to Ferralium 255, Langley Alloys are the distribution partner of Sandvik, and so carry a comprehensive stock of their alloys, including 2205 (F51), 32750 (F53) and 32760 (F55). These alloys are available in up to 40 different sizes from ½” to 16”

diameters, and held in sufficiently large quantity to meet the requirements of the biggest projects. Apart from these top-of-the-range stainless steels, the company has extended its range of nickel alloys available ex-stock. Used by customers for similar applications to those mentioned previously, an investment of more than £1.5M in stocks of alloys 718, K-500, 625, 725, 825 and 925 means that Langley Alloys are your go-to partner

when it comes to sourcing these specialist metals.

Most of Langley Alloy’s stock is in the form of solid bar, which is machined to form a wide variety of components. However, the product range was expanded to include hollow bars too. Hollow bars can save machine shops significant cost and time, allowing them to start with a product closer in shape to the finished component. More than 80 different sizes of stainless steel hollow bar are currently in stock, and are used to manufacture connectors, couplings, seals and cylinders.

To offer the best possible choice, Langley Alloys also operates their own deep hole borer. Able to produce holes up to 200mm in diameter, and over 2m in length, this piece of kit means that customers can get hollow bars in bespoke sizes or alloys not available from stock. It therefore removes the need for large minimum order quantities and mill production lead times and is another service beyond just supplying metal.

This is complemented by in-house inspection (ultrasonic and dye penetrant), plus an experienced team including several metallurgists that can help interpret your requirement, review specifications and arrange any extra testing, certification or 3.2 witness inspection as required.

Langley Alloys main warehouse is located near Stoke on Trent. From there, orders large and small are despatched daily on a global basis. For your high-performance alloy needs think Langley Alloys.

Wanner has launched the Hydra-Cell® T200 Series Medium Pressure, multi-diaphragm pump

range, which in terms of flow rate and pressure are the highest performing pumps in the Hydra-Cell range and the biggest pumps ever produced by the Company. They feature a seal-less design that eliminates leaks, hazards and the expense associated with seals and packing; lowering the cost of ownership and giving a longer service life than competitive pumping technologies.

There are two models, currently, in the T200 Series, rated at 207 bar (3000 psi) and 241 bar (3500 psi) with maximum flows of 387 l/min (102.2 US gpm)

and 349 l/min (92.4 US gpm) respectively. The new pumps are ideal for oil and gas production, mining operations, boiler feed and high-pressure cleaning, along with chemical and petrochemical process and transfer applications.

Hydra-Cell pumps have no dynamic seals, cups or packing to leak, wear or replace, eliminating seal maintenance costs while hazardous materials and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are fully contained.

The seal-less design, combined with robust check valves, also enable the pump to handle abrasive particles up to 800 microns in size and with less wear

than gear, screw or plunger pumps.

The Hydra-Cell T200 can operate with a closed or blocked suction line and can run dry indefinitely without damage, eliminating downtime and repair costs.

With energy costs becoming an ever-increasing element in overall operational cost the T200’s low energy consumption, in relation to performance, will contribute significantly to its claim of having the lowest cost of ownership.

Learning good communication skills is essential for the safe and productive use of water jetting as part of process

maintenance procedures, says the Water Jetting Association (WJA).

Effective communication is vital on worksites where multi-disciplined teams must co-ordinate their activity and apply safety procedures clearly and promptly, says the UK’s leading water jetting training provider.

High-pressure water jetting is used for cleaning and de-fouling equipment and structures throughout process industries, including manufacturing, petrochemical refining and pharmaceutical production.

WJA Director David Kennedy says: “High pressure water jetting can be hazardous if not managed properly. Good communication skills bring high-pressure water jetting operatives into decision-making processes, so risks can be

properly discussed and mitigated.

“Also, operatives are more likely to take an active part in sharing important issues relating to their work if they have full confidence in their communication skills, and that comes from effective training.

“This is just as important when using remotely-controlled robotic water jetting systems as specialist teams need

to communicate between themselves and with onsite personnel using verbal or visual signals. All WJA training emphasises and gives instruction on the importance of effective communication when carrying out water jetting. That includes, where appropriate, the use of hand signals.

Good communication skills build trust between colleagues and within wider work teams. This helps ensure instructions are given and received with clarity, especially when supervisors may not be on site, and give operatives the confidence to challenge actions that may undermine safety.

To be registered with the WJA and receive a Certificate and Photo ID Card, a trainee must attend a one-day class-based Water Jetting – Safety Awareness course. Topics include water jetting systems, control procedures (including communication), risk assessment and emergency response.

Operatives can also select from a range of one-day practical application modules: Surface Preparation (SP), Tube and Pipe Cleaning (TP), Hydrodemolition (HD) and Drain and Sewer Cleaning (DS). The courses are accredited by City & Guilds and are based on the association’s Codes of Practice which are accepted as setting the industry standard for best practice in the UK and internationally.

London Organ-on-Chip specialist CN Bio has secured a license to

key technology from its partners at MIT for a device which connect human tissues allowing a “Human-Body-on-a-Chip” of up to 10 organs to be built.

The device will boost the accuracy of pre-clinical drug discovery studies, helping researcher to predict the effects of chemical and biological substances have on human organs.

CN Bio’s PhysioMimix lab-benchtop Organ-on-Chip device is designed for biopharma and academic laboratories. Its compact, easy-to-use cell-culture system has impressed laboratory experts, and in 2018 PhysioMimix won the Innovation Gallery Award at the UK’s largest laboratory event (Lab Innovations).

PhysioMimix’s open-well plates support the formation of three-dimensional micro-tissues that mimic the structure and function of human organs.

Two or more of these systems can be linked using microfluidics to reveal how multiple organs interact and respond to drugs or other chemicals.

Cells and media can be sampled throughout experiments for analysis including biomarker assays, imaging to visualize cell morphology, cell migration and protein marker localization.

Researchers are using PhysioMimix to study primary cells, stem cells, and organ mimetics including include liver, lung gut, heart, kidney, skin, endometrium and brain. CN Bio’s PhysioMimix system is

powered by technology licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developed in the laboratory of Professor Linda Griffith. In 2018, Nature Scientific Reports published results by Griffith and CN Bio of a 10-organ “Human-Body-on-a-Chip”: the final milestone of a five year $26M contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The Novacyt Group was founded in 2005 and focuses on its strengths in the design,

manufacture, and supply of a growing portfolio of oncology and infectious disease diagnostic products. The historical supply of solutions (from our molecular and more traditional microbiological methods) to the food, industrial and environmental testing industries, coupled with our expertise in global distribution of these products has reinforced the company’s status as a market leader in this area.

It was our first time exhibiting at this particular show and the response to the company and products was excellent from both end-user customers and industry contacts. It proved to be an excellent show to meet with existing clients; an invaluable opportunity to develop new business relationships, and a great way to bring our own

business divisions closer together in collaborative projects. We had fantastic feedback from visitors, both from a Novacyt exhibition perspective, and on the merits of attending the show. Some of the thought provoking seminar sessions added further value to an altogether enjoyable and worthwhile experience!

Christeyns Food Hygiene brings

to market a new innovative, cost effective and time saving visual option for surface testing. Recently released in the UK and Europe and already in use with many food manufacturing companies.

FreshCheck, a patented formulation, is a unique hygiene verification test that reveals the presence of viable bacterial populations and organic soiling on food contact and preparation surfaces in a matter of seconds via a simple visual colour-change method.

The opportunities for FreshCheck are almost endless to reduce risks and help producers meet hygiene specifications. The products use is very flexible from positive release of equipment to route cause analysis of bacterial contamination and the products simplicity decrease hassle when carrying out hygiene audits.

Tested by Campden BRI, FreshCheck has proven to be effective at revealing the presence of low levels of both pathogenic and spoilage bacteria including Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella typhimurium. It only takes seconds to provide a qualitative presence (or absence) of contamination.

The product is applied onto a dry surface and the original blue colour of the liquid will change if any contaminants are on the surface. This can be measured against the colour-test guide on the product packaging. The result is nearly immediate and thorough, as proven in extensive testing carried out by Campden BRI.

Industrial Process News is thrilled to announce Innovec Controls as the recipient of our Process Control

Systems Company of the Month Award. Truly deserving of this accolade, Innovec Controls have established themselves as reliable manufacturers of high quality products in several international markets. Now they’re eyeing up further expansion.

Established in 1987, in Australia, Innovec Controls is an internationally renowned designer and manufacturer of process control systems and LED safety lighting instruments. From humble beginnings in Australia, Innovec Controls have grown consistently to serve a broad range of varying industries world-wide. Operating in markets in Australia, North America, Scandinavia and Asia, Innovec are intent on further expansion into new markets still.

I spoke to Innovec Control’s CEO Rob Newman on where the company is headed, where they have been, and everything in-between. I asked Robert how the last twelve-months have fared for the company. “They have been very good for the company.” I’m told. An integral part of the plan for the company is establishing footholds in previously untapped markets. “Our policy has always been to get a hold in various niches. Part of our programme has been to establish the company in the UK and Euro markets from our beginnings in Australia.”

Actively working towards establishing themselves in the UK and wider European markets, Innovec Controls have appointed a business partner in the UK, Flotech Performance Systems, facilitating the establishment of the foothold they seek in

the UK market. Moreover, Innovec Controls have taken further measures to achieve this short-term goal. Seeking to boost their advertisement exposure, whilst “taking a visible stance at trade exhibitions and to eventually have a strong presence in the UK, a place where we are strengthening our base.” An eye for expansion signals a company’s true intent on growth; it’s a true sign of a healthy and productive company not content with the status quo.

Whilst it is important that the company is intent on growth and expansion into international markets, what has facilitated this growth is the impressive and varied range of high quality, cost effective products designed and manufactured by Innovec Controls. The company has Quality Certification to ISO 9001:2015.

Amongst the wide range of quality products on which the company has bolstered their

international reputation are: additive injection controllers, flow measurement and batch controllers, LED railway and safety and transport lighting, automotive instruments and portable calibrators. In March of 2018 at their first trade show, StocExpo in Rotterdam, Innovec Controls were very well received and gained a significant amount of attention.

A testament to the quality and reliability of Innovec’s products, a Norway based railway company have adopted Innovec’s simple but highly effective safety lighting for use on trains in the robust and testing conditions of the Arctic cold. The client presented a challenge to Innovec, a challenge they efficiently overcame, delivering a product, the LEDMLD which was highly satisfactory to the customer. The product has a life expectancy of 10 years.

An excellent industry event for companies offering special processes allied to the Aerospace, Defence, Oil

& Gas, Nuclear, Instrumentation and Automotive Industries.

Electron beam welding is EBP Ltd’s specialist offering, with Tungstan Inert Gas welding, Non-Destructive Testing and Precision Machining playing an important supporting role to our clients. It was quite an eye opening experience to discover that there is a serious lack of general knowledge within the industry regarding EB welding and its capabilities. For EBP Ltd the event proved to be a very successful, busy 2 days, with well over 70 positive leads being generated from the show which was well above the average number being fed back to the exhibitors by the organisers.

EBP Ltd would like thank all of the 70 plus enquiries , who requested an information pack via the electronic ‘Smart Leads’ system which was run at the event. Hopefully all of you have physically received the information via the Royal Mail. Secondary contact will be made to all of those who requested the information, unfortunately due to the high the level of interest in EB welding, the follow-up phone call process is still on-going as many of the enquiries have matured into site visits having to be made. Your patience is appreciated and EBP will be in contact as soon as possible.

Due to the success of the 2018 Advanced Engineering event, EBP Ltd will be exhibiting at the 2019 show which will be held on the 30th and 31st October, again, at the NEC in Birmingham. We hope to see you at the event.

Following its debut in 2017, Coventive Composites returned to Advanced Engineering in 2018 with a

new and improved exhibition stand. “When we launched the Coventive brand at the end of 2017, the idea was to provide potential clients with a much clearer overview of the areas in which we can support them.” explains Ben Hargreaves, Business Manager at Coventive.

The new approach has been very successful, with Coventive generating a number of promising leads at this year’s exhibition.

“It was another busy show for us this year. As well as exhibiting, members of our Research & Technology team chaired several open forums and presented some of our recent research into natural fibre composites and composites for ballistic protection. We also put on a free taster-session of our popular composite materials training course.”

The results? “It can often be difficult to quantify the benefits so soon after an exhibition. However, this year, we have already turned around a pilot-scale prepreg production project for a client and, as we speak, we are working with a separate client to deliver some tailored market intelligence and market entry strategy advice.”

Discussions regarding Coventive’s attendance at Advanced Engineering 2019 are already underway.

New thermal break regulations and triple glazing requirements are prompting architects, designers,

and civil engineers to choose composite pultruded profiles over traditional aluminium and steel window frames, internal stiffening bars, and thermal breaks.

Thermoset and thermoplastic pultruded profiles have a number of properties that make them the material of

choice for a wide range of applications – lightweight and low maintenance for example. They are also recyclable, and even more importantly, thermally efficient. These properties combine to make them perfect for meeting new window regulations, and any planet-friendly regulations that dictate new design.

Pultruded composite lintels are good to - 40°C, have outstanding thermal properties, and they get stronger as they get colder. Another bonus, especially for construction workers, is that composite lintels can be handled at low temperatures with just gloved hands, without fear of getting freezer burn.

Using composites for frames and internal stiffening bars also results in a huge weight-saving. Good news on the cost of transport, and the carbon footprint of a building project – but also on the risk of installation.

Pultrex have been the market leaders in composite technology for over 40 years. To find out more about composite technology for window frames, internal stiffening bars, and thermal breaks, contact their composite experts on +44 (0)1206 395559 or visit www.Pultrex.com.

The UK Government’s research and development tax relief scheme aims to promote innovation by

reducing a company’s tax bill.

You could use it to cut your corporation tax by an amount that is equal to a percentage of your company’s qualifying R&D expenditure.

This means that you could claim up to 33p for every £1 of qualifying R&D expenditure you spend and, last year, the Government awarded over £3.5billion through the scheme.

Many companies are missing out on this additional funding because either they, or their accountant, do not think their projects qualify or believe claiming itself is an expensive process.

n At F. Initiatives we’re aiming to make specialist tax advice accessible to all - with a number of flexible pricing options depending on the size of your projects.

n We’re experts at leveraging within the HMRC criteria for what qualifies as R&D and have a 100% success rate in the UK.

n Companies of any size can claim, you don’t have to be profit making and your projects do not need to have successful outcomes to be eligible.

Contact us on [email protected] to arrange a call back and start your claim!

At formnext 2018, 3YOURMIND announced that their Agile MES software had entered an Early Access

Program with AM power users in the US and Europe. The software was developed using the Agile project methodology; biweekly meetings with customers who are actively using the software to discover and solve the concrete hurdles to a seamless production flow. Every session, the 3YOURMIND programming team has deployed new features that are ready for testing and feedback.

The Agile MES offered immediate gains to transparency and production flexibility with a focus on smart part prioritization and dynamic scheduling. It quickly became clear that the next two priorities were defining the process chains using custom workflows and automatically translating those schedules into work and part lists. Now they are in active development for direct machine integrations to collect and analyse real-time production data. All these features will be packaged into the formal software launch leading into the AMUG.

The Agile MES Early Access Program has allowed 3YOURMIND to jump straight to solving the largest challenges facing the Additive Manufacturing production floor reducing the processing time from hours to minutes.

Curtiss-Wright have a commendable history behind them, having been founded by three of the world’s most

celebrated aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright and Mr. Glenn Curtiss, one of the forerunners of naval aviation. Their companies, the ‘Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company’ and ‘Wright Aeronautical Corporation’ merged in 1929 in order to create Curtiss-Wright. Today Curtiss-Wright is one of the world’s leading advanced engineering companies, having diversified and branched out into numerous different technologies across multiple sectors, including commercial and industrial, defence, power, metals, aerospace and much more.

At the turn of the 21st century, Curtiss-Wright had grown into a multi-national company, with global sales of over $2 billion and having acquired almost 60 businesses. Many of these companies still operate under their original name, such as Metal Improvement Company, Bolt’s Metallizing, IMR Test Labs, Component Coating and Repair Services and more who now are part of Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies. These various divisions offer a wide variety of different specialised surface treatments such as thermal spray coatings, solid film lubricants, shot peening technology and much more.

Curtiss Wright Surface Technology, one of their most well-known and international subsidiaries,

specialises in providing material surface treatment solutions, focuses on enhancing the performance of critical materials and components. As many of their clients are in heavy engineering based industries, critical components are often of vital importance.

Not only do they need to be specially designed to precision specifications, but they need to be long lasting and properly maintained too. Curtiss Wright Surface Technology can offer clients a comprehensive material treatments service that covers silicone, plastic and electronic components, coatings, shot and laser peening, material analysis, testing, repair and maintenance.

Curtiss Wright Surface Technology can provide mechanical and metallurgical testing services for a range of different materials and components through IMR Test Labs. Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies uses only the most advanced technology and methods in order to conduct fatigue testing, thermal spray coating analyses, metallurgical and failure analyses, accelerated weathering and corrosion testing, weld testing and much more.

When it comes to engineered coatings, Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies have a wide scope of services, including providing thermal management, corrosion and erosion, and protection and repair of turbine components. Curtiss-Wright Surface Technology can provide

protective engineered coatings or metal coatings to protect components from the environment, corrosion, heat, and wear. As they can ensure protection for components of any size or complexity, they have a vast client base made up

of those seeking their protective coating services, including the aerospace, oil, gas, automotive and medical industries.

Their range of coating solutions includes thermal spray/HVOF coatings, solid film lubricants, liquid coatings, and parylene conformal coatings. Not only that, but Curtiss Wright Surface Technology also offer repair and overhaul for gas and steam turbine components, as well as laboratory testing and process verification for: salt spray corrosion testing, U.V testing and development of their own bespoke coating systems such as Everlube®, Microseal, and Flurene Lube-Lok®, sacrificial aluminium coatings, diffusion coatings and pre-treatments.

Metal and material surface solutions are a huge part of why Curtiss Wright Surface Technology has become such an internationally recognised name. In addition to their famous controlled shot peening process, the company can provide highly effective and controlled Laser Peening for components in turbine engines, aircraft structures, wing skins and more.

This specialist process puts exceptionally deep residual compressive stress in certain parts of

a component to prevent crack initiation and fatigue. Not only does this allow the component to resist damage from erosion, strike damage, fretting, and corrosion, but it can also better withstand pressure from both low cycle/high stress and high cycle/low stress situations. Better yet, their laser peening ensures quality control, precise application and poses no risk of process contamination.

Preventing the failure of critical components is a huge concern for clients, and is one of the most highly sought after services from Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies. Problems can be caused due to any number of reasons throughout the component design process, whether it’s the choice of materials used, incorrect assembly, or damage to the parts caused by bending, rolling or forging.

Components of any type can be damaged, such as blade roots, rotating rings and tie wire holes used in Aero-Engines, fasteners and stringers used in Airframes, and torsion bars, gears and keyways, which are used to make Crankshafts and more. Thankfully Curtiss Wright Surface Technology have a large array of solutions, including but not limited to: C.A.S.E. isotropic superfinishing, Parylene coating, Thermal barrier coatings, Cathodic protection and much more.

If you would like to find out more about Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies and their many specialised, services and solutions, then be sure to get in contact with the company today. Alternatively, you can find out more about the company by visiting the website below, where information, animations case studies and links to their many services can also be found.

Health & Safety News

The Earth-Rite RTR is Newson Gale’s road tanker recognition grounding system for road and bulk chemical tankers transferring flammable materials for use in hazardous

environments. The loading and unloading of road tankers with flammable and combustible products, presents one of the most serious fire and explosion risks for site operations within the hazardous process industries.

Vehicles transferring combustible products require static grounding protection to prevent the build-up of static electricity on the truck or equipment, like hoses, that are connected to the truck. If static electricity is allowed to accumulate on the truck the discharge of a static spark becomes a very real, but unseen, ignition hazard. The presence of this voltage is the source of the spark risk. If the spark does discharge in the presence of a flammable atmosphere, the spark energy will be in excess of the minimum ignition energy of the flammable mixture.

The Earth-Rite RTR grounding system performs three critical functions which ensure the fire and explosion risk of an ignition caused by static electricity is eliminated. Utilising patented Tri-Mode technology, the system establishes these three key inputs before the operation

can commence: n Ensure grounding system is connected to

tank and chassis of truck n Ensure grounding system is connected to

true earth n Ensure the resistance between the truck and

the verified earth ground does not exceed 10 Ohms

Combining visual indication, interlocking capabilities, static ground verification and continuous ground loop monitoring; the Earth-Rite RTR is Newson Gale’s latest solution for tanker loading/unloading operations in hazardous area industries.

A drainage survey carried out by

Lanes Group plc has been an essential step towards development of a new waste-to-energy plant. Drainage engineers based at the Lanes Chester depot completed the two weeks of drain and sewer investigations at the site in Northwich, Cheshire.

Lanes has been commissioned by demolition specialist Scudder Demolition, part of the Carey Group of companies, to carry out the detailed CCTV drainage survey. The site is being prepared for the construction of a new waste-to-energy plant that will generate enough renewable electricity for more than 125,000 homes.

Phil Shelley, Site Manager at Scudder Demolition, said: “An important step is the have an up-to-date accurate map of the surface water and foul drainage system across and around the proposed development site. This will allow us to make sure the integrity of the drainage system for adjoining facilities is maintained during demolition and site development. The drainage survey will also allow our civil and structural engineers to plan the reconnection of surface water drains and foul sewers where that is necessary.”

The Lanes CCTV drainage survey team is using robotic crawler cameras and push-rod cameras to inspect pipes with diameters ranging from 150mm to 300mm. The surveys will result in the generation of an accurate drainage map of the surveyed site, as well as HD-quality video of pipework revealing its condition, and any remedial work that is needed. Lanes won the work by competitive tender and will also carry out water jetting of drainage lines that are found to need cleansing.

The waste-to-energy plant is being developed on land owned by Tata Chemicals in Northwich.

At Churchill Controls, we are the UK’s leading manufacturer of low power radio telemetry & control

equipment. Founded in 1976 and based in Crowthorne, Berkshire, we supply cost effective solutions to the problems of monitoring and control of remote industrial plant and processes.

The Mega_Link telemetry & control system, (which is enhanced and partnered with the Mega_Bridge IP communicator), is a low-cost and versatile telemetry communication system for passing two-way instrumentation, measurement and control data between industrial plant and equipment which can be distributed over wide geographical areas and remote locations.

Our telemetry & control systems typically concentrate on point to point or point to multi-point communications for the “relay” of signals from one location to another. Simply put, digital and analogue inputs go in one end and they come out as outputs at the other location, and this works in both directions.

The system can also interface with 3rd party PLCs and SCADA systems at either or both the basestation and outstation ends, using industry standard serial interfaces like Modbus, Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi protocols.

While licensed and licence free UHF low power radio and leased line/private wire has been the mainstay of our telemetry communications through multiple generations of equipment, the product range has continuously evolved to also include 2G/3G/4G and Internet Protocol (IP) based solutions with IOT architecture.

Our latest product, “Mega_Bridge” adds flexible and fully featured internet protocol (IP) connectivity to the well-established Mega_Link family of telemetry & control units used to pass two-way instrumentation, measurement and control data between equipment and industrial plant.

Designed specifically for new apartment buildings

that utilise the now standard high levels of insulation and building techniques - ELFOPack is the “all in one” internally installed air-source heat pump unit which covers the needs of heating, cooling, hot water production, mechanical ventilation with thermodynamic heat recovery and electronic filtration, revolutionising the market of comfort solutions for independent plant.

The main features of ELFOPack are: n Ambient comfort – The

perfect living environment is achieved by using the latest heat pump technology via a ducted delivery system throughout the home.

n Domestic hot water production – Ready for use within the bathroom and kitchen with very low energy

consumption n Continuous air purification

– the system extracts stale air from areas where humidity and odours are present.

n High efficiency – the system utilises the natural heat that is generated within bathrooms and kitchen areas, this energy is then used to assist with either heating or DHW production

n Decentralized solution – which guarantees the end user a reduction in charges by eliminating the waste of energy normally associated with a traditional centralised system

By integrating all the functions required for a system in an “all in one” unit that uses the ducting of the controlled mechanical ventilation for maintaining ambient comfort, ELFOPack reduces the capital costs, the management costs and simplifies the installation. As it is internally installed there is now no need to prepare or design for any external units that are associated with traditional heat pump systems. T +44 (0)1489 550631www.clivet.com

Corroserve has just announced further major investment in its Thermodynamic

Pump Monitoring (TPM) System. As a result, the Leeds based corrosion protection and engineering services specialist can now monitor the performance of any class C industrial pump over its working life and as a result highlight significant cost saving opportunities for the user.

Calibrated and certified by the Yamari Standard Laboratory in accordance with relevant Japanese standards, the updated TPM system calculates pump efficiency by the thermodynamic method based on the first law of thermodynamics. The effect is that energy losses in the pumping process are

transferred to the pumped liquid in the form of heat energy, causing a rise in temperature. The TPM unit measures temperature and pressure at the pump suction and discharge and by inputting the motor power consumption, the system calculates the flow rate and actual pump performance and efficiency.

TPM identifies pump wear and measures changes in performance and efficiency, allowing the customer to make informed decisions about refurbishment and the optimum time for any work to be carried out. It also identifies the most efficient pumping conditions providing customers with a detailed & accurate report.

The financial investment in TPM testing will be quickly recouped in savings made by reduced energy costs from running a more efficient pump – savings that might be increased even more by using the company’s Fluiglide coatings to further enhance pump efficiency.

The new service enables energy managers to get more control and visibility over their

building energy management system by linking it to Carbon Numbers’ new cloud platform.

Through remote monitoring, Carbon Numbers can take responsibility and ownership of their clients’ systems, using technologies and data driven strategies to provide real-time insights to improve working conditions, cut costs and reduce carbon. Using real-time data has the added benefits of reducing site visits and maintenance costs, as well as being able to proactively identify issues and make instant adjustments.

Carbon Numbers, who were recently invited to take part in this year’s Parliamentary Review, were inspired to launch Carbon Cloud as a response to data inefficiencies. CEO, Neil Fright,

explains how while most buildings have an effective solution in place, all too often this is not an efficient one, “With many factors influencing a building’s performance, data is often poorly understood, whilst the ability to drive change can complex, especially when various systems aren’t connected properly.”

Neil goes on to explain how by linking their BMS to Carbon Cloud, companies and organisations can use data to create a more sustainable future, “There’s an increasing pressure, particularly on financial directors, to demonstrate sustainability. Rising energy prices, skills shortages and increasing legislation mean there are more factors to consider than ever before, but by connecting your BeMS to the Carbon Cloud, we can use your data to improve everything from your space utilisation and staff

wellbeing, to the cyber security of your building management system, all steps that help to future-proof your business. This will also enable you to achieve ISO 27001 compliancy.”

Materials Handling Company of the Month

Industrial Process News is proud to announce that Palamatic Ltd has been selected as our Materials Handling

Company of the Month, for their expert provision of materials handling solutions for an extensive range of manufacturing industries.

Palamatic was established in 1985 by Stewart and Sue Bennison, who are still shareholders of the company, and their Head Quarters are based in Chesterfield. They also have American premises in Garner, North Carolina, as well as a global distribution network covering Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia.

All of Palamatic’s equipment is bespoke to comply with each customer’s requirements, and they provide the service and commissioning for every product they distribute. Their range includes vacuum lifting systems, support gantries, and automatic sack opening machinery. Furthermore, Palamatic supply cGMP hygienic handling systems under their PalPharma Handling Solutions brand, which are ideal for handling products within controlled environments.

They distribute to any manufacturing industry where something needs lifting and transferring from one place to another, with their most frequent customers being involved in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and woodworking sectors.

We spoke to Andrea Fincham about what makes Palamatic leaders in their field: “Our equipment is always designed with the operator in mind. Even a seemingly standard application will be looked at by an engineer to check it will work within the specific constraints of the process it is being used for.”

Indeed, Palamatic are committed to providing excellent customer service, with a dedicated department providing after sales care and support throughout the lifespan of the customer’s

handling equipment. The company also ensure they continue to travel the world to help maintain equipment, deliver training, offer advice on the latest products, and provide equipment refurbishment.

In addition to their distribution services, Palamatic also offer a Service Contract Plan, which ensures that lifting systems stay up to date and allows improved allocation of labour resources. It includes installations and commissioning, servicing of equipment, service response, spare parts and technical manuals, training, upgrades, and system relocations. The dates of these services can be arranged to suit the company’s production requirements, meaning Palamatic’s Service Contract Plan is more cost effective than a breakdown call out charge.

One of the keys to Palamatic’s success is their state of the art design studio, where design engineers use the latest 3D hardware and software, maintaining the same design philosophy whether they are working on core products or a customer’s bespoke equipment. Working with the customer and customer’s project teams, they ensure that the operational requirements, project deadlines and financial budgets are met, whether the client requires a unique solution or one from the shelf.

As experts in health and safety legislation and ATEX regulations, Palamatic can guarantee that all their solutions are fully compliant, that legal obligations are met, and that their customer’s equipment and workforce are fully protected.

In 2017, Palamatic moved into a new factory, which is 22,000sq/ft. This huge expansion in factory space allowed them to scale up and provide a larger range of handling solutions for their clients. Indeed, they are currently in the process of introducing two new sub ranges, the Uni-LITE Series and Uni-LITE Flex Series. “The differentiator between the two sub-ranges is the strokes they can achieve to ensure the safest ergonomic application for the operator,” says Andrea. “Uni-LITE is for packing and unpacking applications around waist height and conveyor height. Whilst this range can offer longer strokes, we don’t see it as advisable to go for more than 600-700mm. The Uni-LITE Flex is for packing, unpacking, stacking, and de-palletising, and it has a much broader stroke range. It is also better for larger materials, where the operator prefers not to lean over.”

They are also introducing the new PalPharma Ally range of rechargeable IP65 stainless steel trolleys, which are electric and pneumatic and have a compact footprint. These will be used in the food

and pharmaceutical sectors for transporting products, with various attachments for carrying, holding, lifting and pouring. There will also be options for spanning pallets so the user can pick and place on the pallet. Furthermore, they have developed a ground breaking platform system of PalPharma trolleys in partnership with Meissner filtration products, as part of the CryoVault™ project, which is a scalable, robust and completely single-use freeze and thaw platform for biopharmaceuticals.

Palamatic also have expertise in supplying gantry systems. The optimised positioning of the supporting gantry or crane can be a vital

element in the successful implementation of a new suspended load handling system. The transportation of load needs to be ergonomically managed in order to prevent unnecessary strain or physical stress for the operator. Palamatic ensures they design their lifting aids to match the task, and their crane systems to match the

process environment, with the occupational health of the operator as one of their main concerns. Ergonomically, the lifting aid is only as good as the gantry from which it is suspended, and so Palamatic supply a complete range of overhead support systems which are individually rated for use with vacuum lifting units. These gantries are available in stainless steel, which minimises internal cavities and flat services to prevent product build-up and to aid clean down.

As the exhibition period approaches, Palamatic will be attending numerous trade shows, including Interphex in New York (2nd-4th April) where they will be displaying their latest developments in pharmaceutical materials handling. They will also be at Powtech in Nuremberg (9th-11th April) at stand number 2-221, where they will be presenting the best of their handling equipment for the processing industries, including their new Uni-LITE handling range. You can also find them at ProPak South Africa, in Johannesburg, ProMat in Chicago, and Farmaforum in Spain.
