Since 1991 Holm & Laue have been de vel op ing the most up-to-date feeding tech nol o gy for the performance-oriented rearing of calves. Today, these solid and weath er proof systems form the basis of a la bour-saving and healthy keeping of calves in several hundred farms.

Prof. Dr. H.-J. Laue and H. J. Holm (Dipl.Ing., FH) invented the time-tested H&L-weighing technology for optimum rearing control and effi cient milk dis tri -bu tion. Both men have been involved with everything concerning feeding for a long time. They both understand the diffi cult job, because they both have an ag ri cul tur al background and started off with an apprenticeship on a farm.

With their tested and proven products, Holm & Laue offer ideal solutions for eve ry farm. H&L offer compact expan-dable sin gle machines as well as large-scale sys tems for large numbers of animals.

Rinsing of the sucking tube after each visitThe warm rinsing water is either sucked off by the calf or by the integrated pump. This guarantees that no following calf must drink stale water.

Powerful and reliable powder worm conveyorThe worm conveyor extends over the whole powder storage room and thus guar an tees an exact dosage. The design of the powder storage room enables easy and quick cleaning.

Automatic milk transport up to the teatEven with distances of up to 8 m between the mixing unit and the sucking device, the freshly prepared feed is transported se cure ly to the sucking device. The calf receives milk with the fi rst suck ing already and does not need to suck air. This is healthier and speeds up the learn ing phase.

The temperature of the sucking device must be just rightThe H&L 100 offers automatic adjust-ment of the milk temperature based on the dis tance between the stand and the mixer, temperature of the environ-ment, desired temperature of the milk and the time passed since the last visit.It is not the temperature of the mixture that is optimized, but the temperature of the liq uid at the teat.

Standard frost-free up to the sucking deviceA standard protection against frost is guar an teed due to a self-activating frost pro tec tion programme.

Automatic cleaning with hot water up to the sucking deviceThe tube up to the teat is integrated in the cleaning process.

Age-related reduction of the feeding temperatureAccording to the age of the calves, the feed ing temperature can be lowered au to mat i cal ly. If two mixing devices and two stands are used, the calves can drink dif fer ent mix-tures with different tem per a tures simultaneously. The advantage: less consumption of pow er per calf, feeding of inex-pensive additional fodder at an earlier stage, and therefore less rearing costs.

Standard fl y protectionA shield prevents fl ys to enter the mixing unit, the powder outlet and the liquid out let. This also works when two mixing units are operating at the same time.

The calf feeding device H&L 100 offers what modern calf breeding requires:

Easy draw off of freshly prepared milkCalves that do not yet live in the group that is fed by the machine, have to be fed sep a rate ly. For this purpose the H&L 100 offers an easy and quick possibility for the with draw al of fresh and specifi cally prepared milk.

A large powder capacity and a low height of the refi lling inletThe powder container can hold up to 50 kg of milk powder. This means that no calf has to drink water just because the pow der was consumed. Refi lling on the week-end is only very seldom necessary. De spite the large volume of the storing unit, the refi lling inlet is only 112 cm high, so that a new sack of milk powder can easily be emptied into the container.

Very easy operationThe control system of the H&L 100 was designed specifi cally for the rearing of calves. High priority was given to the easy operation of the control system. Due to the easy, menu-guided operation, it is usually not even necessary to read the manual.

Automatic activating of the transpondersComplicated entering of numbers is not necessary. All you have to do is to equip the new calf with the collar containing the transponder and from the fi rst visit on, the calf is registered automtically in the lists.

Special control system for a smooth operationThe feeding programme has been opti-mized in many long-term fi eld tests. The fl exible time programme of H&L is es pe cial ly remarkable. It ensures that the visits are spread evenly over the whole day which guarantees that the stands are not too crowded at certain times.

Attractive, easy-care and ergonomical designWith its rounded design, the H&L 100 is not only an optical highlight but also easy to clean. The high-class body made of stain less steel guarantees a long life, even in the tough practice in the stable. The large display allows the farmer to easily check information. In the list of calves, for ex am ple, the data of 4 animals is displayed at the same time.

Solid and weatherproof for a long lasting operationThe H&L is weatherproof, which means it can be operated under outdoor condi-tions without any problems. This also means that i.e. when the season is over, a cleaning of the outside with water hose and brush is also possible without any problems.

Two mixers for two standsFor more than 30 calves we recommend the installation of a second stand. With the second mixing unit it is not only possible for two calves to drink at the same time, but it is possible to feed two different mixtures, prepared individually for each calf.

Four stands for the maximum rate of utilizationThe solution for a maximum rate of produc-tivity! The ca pac i ty with four stands is about 50 % to 70 % higher com pared to the solu-tion with two stands only.

The stand with the H&L animal scalesIn the Year 1994, H&L was the fi rst company to offer an automatic and con tin u al weighing of calves. With this technology it is possible to feed less milk with an increasing weight of the calves. This avoids the increas-ingly different growth rates of calves by an automatic, growth-adjusted distrubition of milk. The H&L animal scales offer an optimum control of the breeding and the health condition (i.e. by the alarm list “Weight decrease compared to previous day”). The scales can easily be installed later and are not expensive.

Concentrate feeding stand with feeding bowl scalesUp to two concentrate feeding stands can be connected to every machine. They allow a well-measured dosing of concentrate feed to calves in or after the milk phase. This not only reduces the number of required feeding stations but also avoids an overeating of the weaned calves. Since the distribution of feed is carried out by an exact dosing and a weighing of the leftovers in the feeding bowls, a precise feeding of each individual calf is possible.

H&L 100additional equipment that meets every requirement

Feeding stand with lockable rear doorEspecially calves of breeds for beef pro duc tion tend to suckle each other, even in the feeding stand. This specifi c feeding stand with a backdoor that is operated by the calf, prevents waiting calves from suck ling the drinking calf in the stand.

Optional one or two powder dosing unitsUp to two different powders can be dosed individually for each animal with the H&L 100. Coughing medicine for coughing calves, electrolytes for calves with diarrhea. Do you know a better health care? It goes without saying that both dos ing units can be removed with one move ment and can be cleaned easily (i.e. in the dishwasher).

The additional dosing unit for liquidsWith this supplement you can feed i.e. for mic acid to combat coli or liquid medicatioin.

Diet programme for calves with diarrhea (with powder dosing unit)H&L have developed a special diet pro gramme. As soon as the farmer rec og niz es diarrhea in a calf, a special diet pro gramme is activated. The calf then receives al ter nat ing diet feed ( electrolytes) and after a break, a reduced amount of milk. After 3 days the calf receives the regular feed again.

The whole milk storage systemThe H&L storage system for whole milk consists of a slowly moving mixer and two movable storage containers with a ca pac i ty of approximately 80 l. This system is very practical: After each milking, the full container is rolled into the calf stable, con nect ed to the H&L 100 and the mixing de vice is moved from the empty container to the full container. The empty container is rolled back to the milk room. The system offers two possibilities for the feeding of whole milk:

Whole milk set up to 70 % –Whole milk feedingWhole milk is a valuable feed for calves if it does not contain any antibiotic residues. At the same time it is a sensitive feed be cause it spoils quickly in warm condi-tions. With the whole milk set 70 % whole milk from 20 to 70 % can be fed to some or all calves. The milk is stored in a cold en vi ron ment and fi lled into the mixer in cold condition on request. Then the milk is heat ed by adding hot water and milk pow der until the correct mixture of milk pow der and liquid is reached. Thus, hygienic problems due to warm milk that contains a lot of bacteria, are avoided.

Whole milk set up to 100 % –Whole milk feedingThis system allows the feeding of 20 to 100 % whole milk. Cold milk is pumped from the storage container, heated in the ma chine to drinking temperature and fed to the calves. This gives the oppor-tunity to add additional milkreplacer to the milk, which might be interesting for calf- fattening farmers. The sucking hose is rinsed after each visit, so calves who shall not receive whole milk can be fed at the same feeding station, without getting remains of whole milk. All internal milk containing parts and the sucking hose are intensively washed twice daily with hot water and detergent. This cleaning procedure starts also automatic if there is a long drinking brake (e.g. at night). By this we are reaching maximum hygiene.

HousingThe machine you buy should be weatherproof and frost-free. A maximum powder storage and a low inlet faciliates the refill.

ProcedureThe milk should be prepared freshly and indivi-dually for each calf. To avoid residues in the system and to avoid that a calf must drink the leftovers of its predecessor, the sucking hose should be rinsed and the water should be sucked off and pumped away.

Water systemTo ensure that the desired temperature reaches the sucking device even over long distances or if the hoses have cooled down, it should be possible to heat the feed to any desired temperature. This also allows the reduction of temperature for elder animals.

Supply of feedMake sure that the milk is transported automati-cally to the sucking device immediately after being prepared, so that the calf receives milk on the first suck and does not have to suck the air out of the hose.

CleaningMake sure that the machine you buy can be clea-ned at high temperatures. An optimum resolution of fat is reached with a minimum temperature of 55°C. In addition to that, it is important that the sucking hose is rinsed after each visit and that the rinsing water is sucked off and does not remain in the system.

CapacityWith a high number of calves it is necessary to have a machine with a high capacity. If you con-nect several stands it is important that you can go on feeding individual mixtures. Therefore, the machine should be equipped with several mixing containers.

Whole milk feedingMake sure that you have the possibility to feed whole milk with your new machine. In this case it is necessary out of hygienic reasons that the whole milk is not stored in warm conditions (bacteria!)

Frost-resistanceThe machine you buy should be frost-resistant in the standard version. It is important that the frost protection activates itself and that it guaran-tees frost-resistance up to the sucking device.

Cleaning of the powder containerMilk powder residues can become hard. For the cleaning at the end of the season it is an advantage if the powder container is designed so that it can be cleaned with rinsing water quickly and easily. All movable parts should be easily removable.

Distance between mixing unit an standLarge distances between mixing unit and stand can sometimes not be avoided. Make sure that the operation of your machine supports long distances.

Fly protectionYour new machine should be equipped with a fly protection device in the standard version, because flies can not only disturb the functioning of the machine but also the hygienic operation.

OperationThe operation of your new machine should be as easy as possible. With this regard no general statement is possible. If the operation is explained to you, the programme should be understandable right away. Usually, a menu-guided operation and a large display facilitate the operation.

Activating of the transpondersMake sure that a new calf is automatically included in the lists on its first visit to the stand, so that no manual data input is necessary.

Controlling for a smooth operationA good feeding programme makes sure that the visits of the calves are spread evenly throughout the day and that the stand is not crowded at certain times.

Many dairy farmers complain about problems with the climate in the stable and an increased germ formation, especially when calves are born through-out the year. This is a problem even in newly built, modern stables. For H&L this was reason enough to deal with this problem. The observa-tions of the two managers and their own experience led to the development of large sized igloos that have a lot of advantages compared to the single igloos that have been used for many years now. The high price and the high work load caused by spreading and cleaning the dung out of every single igloo, as well as the ineffi cient feeding with buckets led to a low acceptance of these igloos among the farmers.Since the predecessors of the H&L 100 were already weatherproof from the outset, it was only logical to develop a breeding system for the outdoor keep ing of large groups with large sized igloos. The result is not bad at all!

To come straight to the point, it (.. H&L Iglu, H&L Joker...) is the smartest purchase I have made in recent years.

I wasn´t convinced by the ... a lot of features listed in the H&L brochure were missing, that I regarded as important.
