ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Once upon a time, I was looking for a place to study English Literature
when my father casually mentioned that his alma mater university might have
one. Indeed, he was right. So I registered and was desperate for months when they
finally accepted me to be one of their students. To this day, I am eternally grateful
to the Good Lord for answered prayers, an affectionate family, a brave new world
of peers, friends, teachers and lecturers, and above all, the strength to make it all
through in these three and a half years. I have been truly blessed that a lot of
people have painted my life, making it so colourful as well as beautifully shaped.
Dra. Christinawati, M.Si., who took me under her wing as my thesis
advisor and as my academic councillor before that. Thank you, Ma’am, for
showing me that being kind and patient is the most important trait for someone to
possess. Your careful guidance has helped me through some rough spots in my
thesis, and I am truly grateful for that.
Dra. Wan Wan Tjitrodjojo: the outspoken and intelligent woman who gave
me life. I have done myriad things I am not proud of, and yet you never give up
on me. You are the most motivated person I have ever encountered, and I am still
bewildered how you always know what I need before I do. Dr. Antonius Adji
Prayitno, Drs., M.S., Apt, the leading man of our family. Thank you for all the
hardships you have encountered to keep us well and cared for. You have the
largest heart, and I hope I will soon grow into someone as capable as you. Antonia
Vania Adji, my only sister and confidante. I am glad that we both share many
similar preferences in life. Best of luck to you, Peke. Ce Vonny, my super-brave

aunt who takes care of my nieces (Evelyn, Ellen, Ellisia, and Doronthy) after the
death of my uncle. I can never thank you enough for constantly helping us with
small things in our day-to-day problems. And to our rabbits, Gimli and Balin.
Lastiko Endi, S.S., M.Hum., Dra. S.E. Widjajati, M.S., Rina Saraswati,
S.S., M.Hum., mgr. Puguh Budi Susetiyo, S.Hum., for their endless supports and
teachings over the years I spent in English Department, FIB. Thanks to my
seniors, Kak Anggit ‘Angie’ Pangastuti and Mbak Donna Iskandar, my friends
from English Department (Azmi, Sandy, Sasa, Aya, Maria, Gama, Ibeth, Vino)
and from Brotherhood (Beswan Djarum 30): Icha, Izza, Tika, Linda, Dudin, Dini,
Delina, Mia, Ozha, Onny, Yuda and the rest. My KKN folk of Bancelok (Aisya,
Zharfan, Astri, Ochi, Fai, Rahma, Fajar, Mujahid, Mia, Danas) and from PSUA.
Of course, I have to thank some special friends whom I have always admired
for their uniqueness and boldness in living their life to the fullest: Meutia
Shabrina, who has helped me a lot while being singing group coaches at PUKM
PSUA 2014 & 2015. Vinda Puspita Valandini, who has befriended me from the
time we were chosen as Komting for PKBU classes. Muhtadin ‘Adi’ Mustafa, the
best friend who sticks around even though I only have disturbing things as our
discussion, mostly. May your dreams soar up to the sky, someday.

ABSTRACT
This study strives to investigate two points respectively, the sensibility trait of the
Youngest/Twelfth Princess from Grimm Brothers’ The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes
and Jena from Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing, and the socio-cultural
settings which link both texts. Through applying Gerard Genette’s Hypertextuality
theory, the descriptive qualitative analysis is conducted to explain the two issues
above. Based on the analysis, the study results show that socio-cultural settings
significantly affect the two main protagonists of the interlinking texts using two
preferred elements of hypertextuality, namely Allusion and Re-vision. Correlating
to both elements, Wildwood Dancing offers elongated details and reasons to fill
the missing gaps of the original fairy tale. Furthermore, sensibility is later proven
to be a significant counterpoint in defending women against patriarchal values.
