Web of Science is the first and only editorially curated and publisher-neutral discovery resource for trusted, peer-reviewed Open Access content.

“Unpaywall is a groundbreaking development,” says Alberto Martín-Martín, who studies bibliometrics and science communication at the University of Grenada in Spain. “It takes us one step closer to achieving a true open research infrastructure.”

Else, H. (2018). How Unpaywall is transforming open science. Nature, 560(7718), 290-291. doi:10.1038/d41586-018-05968-3

What types of Open Access are identified in the Web of Science?

Green Published Papers are final published articles available without charge from a repository.

Green Accepted Papers are peer-reviewed, accepted manuscripts available without charge from a repository.

DOAJ Gold100% of the articles published within a journal are open access.

Other Golda.k.a. “Hybrid” Individual articles that are available at no charge from otherwise subscription-based journals. These papers have been identified by Impactstory as having a Creative Commons (CC) license that are not in DOAJ journals.

BronzeA freely accessible final version of an article on a publisher's website. Bronze OA on Web of Science can contain free-to-read copyrighted "public access" versions and free-to-read versions where license information was unidentifiable.

Open Access across the Web of Science platform

Article-level Open Access identification helps you find legally available Gold,

Hybrid Gold, and Green articles.

Web of Science facilitates access to the best available version of OA content.

• Multiple OA versions are provided per article. Researchers seeking full text will retrieve the best version of an article, in most cases directly from the publisher, by default. When available, you can access additional versions via a drop down menu.

• Versions that have not completed peer review (i.e. Green Submitted) or whose copyright is not clear are intentionally omitted.

• Versions from social networks (e.g. ResearchGate) and file-sharing services (e.g. Sci-Hub) are excluded.

What sources do you look at to identify Open Access material?

Is my institutional repository covered?

Find out by viewing the Unpaywall Source List

Web of Science supports OA reporting and assessment needs of institutions

To support your assessment use cases, Web of Science stores ALL identified OA versions for a given article, rather than just one, to help you measure the success of your institutional policies.

Does posting a preprint positively or negatively

affect impact of the published version?

Has my institution’s policy on self-archiving

been successful?

How is my portfolio of full Gold Journals performing?

Web of Science will help you understand:

Example: Drexel UniversityAnalyzing the OA output of an organization in Web of Science

There are 36,850 Drexel University papers published from 1999-present in Web of Science Core Collection*, and 7,870 of those papers are available as open access.

Drexel has 291 Hot and Highly Cited Papers^, and 146 of those papers are Open Access.

Institutional pitches and resourcesAdministrative priorities:• Impact – how does OA correlate

with high impact?

• Many studies show an overall increase in citation count

Piwowar, H., Priem, J., Larivière, V., Alperin, J. P., Matthias, L., Norlander, B., ... & Haustein, S. (2018). The state of OA: A large-scale analysis of the prevalence and impact of Open Access articles. PeerJ, 6:e4375. https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.4375

Page 20: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

OA messaging: impact

• Institutional-level impact comparisons possible with several subscription products:

• SciVal• InCites• Dimensions

• Example is my institution’s OA weighted impact (blue) vs. all publications (orange)

• we have no OA mandates

Page 21: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

OA messaging: comparisons• Benchmarking – what are peers and aspirational peers doing?• FOMO – how prevalent are OA initiatives? Who are the big players?

http://roarmap.eprints.org/

Page 22: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

OA messaging: funds

• Finance – how does OA, including OA 2020, impact library budget?

https://lib.guides.umd.edu/c.php?g=478984&p=3305688 UMD Libraries, “Why do we have to cut journals?”https://sparcopen.org/our-work/big-deal-cancellation-tracking/

OA messaging: funders

Funders indicating support may influence future grant acceptance and compliance

https://www.scienceeurope.org/coalition-s/- Plan S signers, including nations and

funders

Page 24: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

Individual researcher pitches

• Findability – how can others discover my work?

• Publication is just one step in making research open

• Unpaywall is making OA easier than ever to find

• Package cancellations make OA more attractive

Rainbow of open access practices, https://zenodo.org/record/1147025#.W-BgA5NKhaQhttps://unpaywall.org/

Page 25: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

Researchers – audience engagement

• Findability – reaching target audience(s)

• Community partners• Global south or other researchers

with limited resources• General public• Policymakers• .. Pretty much anyone but well-

connected scholars• Altmetrics help track

engagement with these audiences

Page 26: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

Researchers – financial considerations

• Contributing to new financial model

• Library budget specifics not always well understood by researchers

• UC deal, others provide opportunity for discussion

• Personal finances - library OA funding support, if appropriate

• Lots of information, tips for libraries on funds here: https://sparcopen.org/our-work/oa-funds/

Page 27: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

Researchers – external influences

• Institutional mandates/resolutions

• Funding mandates

• Citation counts for P&T• Pre-prints get cited sooner – good

for recent articles

Page 28: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

OA: worthy of its own discussion, but generates more interest when incorporated into larger topics

• Topics covered include:• Researcher Networks• Researcher IDs, including ORCID• OA trends and correlations to impact• Repository options for publications,

other materials• Tools for making research open• Word choice for SEO• Researcher info seeking behaviors

(Google, ResearchGate use, etc.)• Impact factor and journal target

audience reach

One major theme – increasing discoverability

Page 31: Supporting your Open Access Initiatives with Web of Science€¦ · “predatory” OA journals since 2000. 5. 420k+ 5k+ Institutional repositories 4. 13k. Gold OA Journals. 2. 1

Lots of opportunities to promote OA and library
