Warli painting is a style of tribal art mostly created by the tribal people from the North Sahyadri Range in India. This tribal art was originated in Maharashtra, where it is still practiced today. 2018 women in Bhiwandi, Thane and Aarey colony are trained to use Warli on contemporary products.
Women Artisans Skill Enhancement Project
The United Nations Development Programme in India (UNDP India) announced its partnership with funding partner Larsen and Toubro Infotech‘s (LTI) corporate social responsibility initiative, and implementing and market linkage partner Tisser Artisans Trust(TAT).

CASE STUDIES
1)Monika – Aarey Colony
STORY SO FAR:
Monika is a 25 years old
girl living in Aarey Colony.
She has completed her
education up to tenth
standard. After that she
stayed at home and did
household chores. She
has no exposure to the outside world. Monika
came to know about Warli Painting production
in her area and took active interest in it. She
underwent due training in Warli painting and
started production of the products.
THE BEGINNING:
Says Monika, “I started liking Warli painting
since the time its training started in my
neighborhood. With the help of Tisser
trainers, I started innovating in varied designs.
I am earning Rs. 4,500/- since the time I got
Grade A. Along with Grade A, I got Artisan
Card from the Government due to which I will
now be able to showcase my work nationally
and internationally
2) Shabana – Angaon
STORY SO FAR:
Shabana was a shy,
introvert woman. She
never stepped out of
her house for 23
years. She never even
spoke to her
neighbours. When
Tisser approached Angaon cluster regarding
Warli painting training, Shabana was among
the first few women to take a step forward
towards financial independency.
THE BEGINNING:
Shabana is now an ‘A’ Grade designer and
also has Artisan Card provided by the Central
Government. Her average monthly income is
Rs. 3,100/-. Along with her son, she has
booked a flat for herself. Wherein she is in a
position to take care of some amount of EMI
required to pay back the loan.
3) Rekha – Sai Baba Nagar
Rekha completed her
education till 12th
standard. Her family
consists of her
husband who works
as a Driver, a son and
a daughter. She is a
homemaker. Rekha
came to know about
Tisser and its Warli
painting training through Madhavi Ma’am.
THE BEGINNING:
She underwent an intensive training with
dedicated trainers from Tisser and got into
production. Rekha earns Rs. 900/- and through
skill-mapping has got Grade ‘A’. Her husband
is happy to see her work and also get the fruits
of it. Rekha works in her free time after
completing daily chores. She would like to
continue working and is ready to take orders.

The ‘Women Artisans Skill Enhancement Project’ is a skill development programme for women
belonging to marginal communities in Mumbai and Thane, Maharashtra. The Project is funded
