Solera Oak Valley Greens ... A Del Webb 55+ Community 3

presIdent’s messageSeptember is going to be action packed for Solera Oak Valley Greens! The Board of Directors and a multitude of volunteers on our various advisory committees are working on many challenging issues for our community. A big thank you goes to all our members who volunteer their time and talent to make this a better community.

Our Ad Hoc Website Advisory Committee, chaired by Lee Fitzgerald, is putting the finishing touches on our new Solera Website which will be launched soon. Watch for an announcement of the dates for training classes to show residents how to use the new website. You will find information about the launch and the training posted in the mailroom, on our bulletin boards, on our TV channel and on our current website (soleraovg.com).

Our Ad Hoc Bulk Cable Advisory Committee, chaired by Karen Mahoney, is tasked with researching and recommending a new cable TV contract for Solera. Our current contract with Time Warner Cable ends in September 2017. The committee will be conducting surveys and organizing town hall meeting to get input and keep residents informed of the committee’s progress.

Our Ad Hoc Kitchen Remodel Advisory Committee, chaired by Sharon Waitman with the assistance of Dorothy Reese, has worked diligently this past couple of months to bring our Solera kitchen remodel up-to-date with new flooring, counters, cupboards, sinks and appliances. Watch for future reports from these hard-working ladies!

Marcia Casem and Judy McWilliams, co-chairs of our New Resident Welcome Advisory Committee, have completed an update of the New Resident Welcome Book to help our new residents get quickly familiar with what is going on in Solera. Our Solera Ambassadors have already delivered several of the new Welcome Books to new residents! Among other things, the new book contains information on nearly every club and group in Solera. If your club or group is missing from the book or from the monthly listing in the Gazette, contact Kim Little ([email protected]).

Dennis Rice has been appointed as Chairperson for our Emergency Preparedness Educational Advisory Committee. This committee will provide information to prepare residents to deal with emergencies such as fire, flood and earthquakes. This will include Gazette articles, guest speakers, community workshops, etc. (There is one opening on this committee. If you are interested, please fill out a Volunteer Interest form at the Administration Office.)

The Board of Directors also met with our architect, Michael Bern, to determine next steps in our Capital Improvement Project. Hopefully in September, we will be going out for bids, which will provide an accurate cost for the projects. There are many steps that will need to be taken before we begin anything. We will gather the bids, evaluate the cost, determine the best way to move forward and again provide information

by Pat Kingto members to determine how we will precede. With all the requirements of moving forward we are looking at the late spring of 2017 before we begin anything. Finally, we are coming close to bringing our legal battles to an end. Let me give a quick review of why all this has happened. During the early months of 2014, many residents came forward during Open Session Board meetings to express concerns about their safety as they walked in the Common Areas with their pets. They often encountered another resident walking 3-5 pit bulls in the Common Area and these dogs were often seen off leash on the Greenbelt. The Board at that time began the process of defining pet rules to ensure the safety of our residents. A muzzle rule, along with several other guidelines regarding pets in the Common area, was adopted in September 2014. During the next year, Aristea Hupp and her son, Paul, refused to follow those rules and filed four lawsuits against Solera, all of which were dismissed. In late 2015, our Association filed its own lawsuit, which sought a preliminary injunction against Aristea Hupp and her son to enforce the Pet Ownership rules. Superior Court Judge John Vineyard agreed with our rules but stated his concern that the terms “pit bull” and “pit bull mix” were not clearly defined. The Association revised the rule in April of 2016 to more objectively define which dogs are required to be muzzled when in the Association Common Areas. On August 18, Judge Vineyard issued a Preliminary Injunction against the Aristea Hupp and her son forcing them to comply with the recently revised muzzle rule and all other Pet Ownership rules, underscoring the enforceability of all of Solera’s Pet Ownership rules.

In addition to the above judgment, Chief Judge Virginia A. Phillips of the U.S. District Court Central Division ordered that our Aristea Hupp and her son, Paul, both be declared vexatious litigants in Federal Court. This Federal Order is a public document, as is the State ruling mentioned above. Currently our Member is deemed vexatious in Federal Court and her son is vexatious in State and Federal Court. As in the past, we expect that these rulings will be appealed. We have court dates in September, October and November. During the August Open Session Board Meeting a motion was passed to temporarily suspend the monthly transfer of funds from the Operating Account to the Capital Improvement Account to aid in the additional legal costs. Serving on the Board of Directors is a great service to our Community. Every Board member strives to do their fiduciary duty and make the best decisions for the Community we love. Please do not hesitate to send a M2M on Soleraovg.com, send a question to our General Manager, Christine Rodgers ([email protected]) or write out your question or concerns and hand it to one of our great Keystone Pacific employees at the Administration Desk in the Clubhouse. Thank you for the opportunity to serve our Community.

For those of you who saw CAST Players’ production of Calendar Girls, you may recall that at the beginning of each production, we offered audience members an opportunity to make a contribution toward fighting leukemia in honor of the ladies who originated the calendar as well as our ladies who brought it to life on stage. At the same time, we also stated that CAST Players would add a portion of the proceeds from the production to the amount of contributions collected and forward the total on to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

This is to report that your contributions amounted to $420.00 which our Board of Governors then matched. In the photograph above, CAST Players’ President Annette Tringham (who appeared as Annie in the play) is shown presenting the check for $840.00 to Angelica Simmons of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Or-ange County Chapter, while Beverly Crowe (Chris in the play) and Richard Crowe, Board Member, join in the ceremony.

Thank you for your donations and thank you for your support of Community Theater.

Solera’s Support Our Troops is hosting a Fund-raiser BBQ Party on September 25. We are look-ing for residents to make cookies and/or brownies. Please contact Judi McWilliams at (951) 529-1161 or [email protected] if you are interested in contributing.

bon appetItIn the “good old summertime,” it’s always fun to revisit a place where you’ve had lots of fun, gained a little bit of California history, and found a great place to shop. That’s what 20 members did on August 5, when we revisited the Graber Olive

House in Ontario. The Olive House, the original home still stands on the property, was started by C. C. Graber in 1894. To this day, the Graber family still carries on the tradition taking their

famous tree ripened olives and processing them for us to enjoy. We toured their canning facilities, still using equipment from the 1930’s and 40’s and had an amazing tour guide, Dot, who walked us through each step in the canning process, delighting us with profiles of all the Grabers. The olives are actually grown in Lindsay, a city in Central California, on 80 acres of land. The weather is the best for their growth there; then they are shipped down to Ontario at night to keep them cool, and processed only during the months of late September and all of October.

They have 2 lovely gift shops, Casa del Olivo and La Casita, where we shopped ‘til we dropped! They were filled with lots of olives, of course, but also many fine foods, jams and jellies and a wide variety of unique kitchen gifts and baskets. Everyone left content, arms laden with goodies! The Olive House also has a small memorabilia museum on site.

Our September 2 event will be an “Apple a Day.” So, bring us a favorite recipe with apples in it to share with the group. It will be an “All American Apple Pie Day,” so be sure to mark your calendars, and join us.

Bon Appetit!

radIo 101 groupThe RADIO 101 GROUP is actively involved in providing instructions to a few members who are interested in getting their Ham Radio License. Richard Ririe was successful last month in getting his license (CONGRATULATIONS RICHARD!) and two other members have taken their exam in August. (Results are unknown at the time this article was written.) In addition to providing this assistance, the group also meets to help members to be more active on their radios. To that end, the Group is making plans to form a “local net.” The plan is to set up a time, frequency and format where licensed ham radio operators in Solera and the surrounding area can meet on a regular basis via their radios to discuss a “topic of the day,” radio “shop talk,” or anything else that may come to mind. This should be fun and informative!

The RADIO 101 GROUP has also conducted several radio drills where “Field Operators” (volunteers in the community with FRS Radios or walkie-talkies) are contacted to make reports on any issues they see in their local areas. While these communications are only practice sessions at this point, they will be become important means of communication when a real emergency arises. Thanks go out to the volunteers who have made these drills very successful.

If you are interested in becoming involved with the RADIO 101 GROUP, contact Joe Veca at [email protected] or Dennis Rice at [email protected]. While the RADIO 101 GROUP is not directly connected with and has no authority over “Field Operators,” you can contact Dennis Rice at [email protected] and he will attempt to put you in contact with someone in your area who can explain how Field Reporters may function.

oaK VaLLeY rV CLubMost everyone is home from summer travels and are eagerly looking forward to the exciting places that are on the calendar for the remainder of 2016. Trips planned for the remainder of this year include:East Shore RV Park (Puddingstone) September 19–23; Calico Ghost Town (an extension to the following one) November 12 and 13, and Lakeside RV Resort in Pahrump November 14–18;Rancho Jurupa December 5–9. Because this is a popular time of the year, please make your reservation as soon as possible. If you use Passport America, you must call 1(800) 234-7275. With the remainder of this year now filled with several exciting destinations, we are starting to plan for 2017. First one suggested

is Ventura. No particulars are available at this time; however, we look forward to them in the near future.

Just a reminder: Our October RV Club meeting has been changed to

September 29, 2016. Our meetings are the first Thursday of even months in the Oakmont Clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. and our outings usually are in the odd months. Tip of the month: Why do we need a surge protector in our RV? Staying at a variety of RV Parks you are putting your expensive RV at risk of not having good reliable power delivered to your RV. Without one many things can go array, including but not limited to: AC units, refrigerators, all electronic equipment, and blown circuits. We’ve all had different things go out and had to replace them. The cost can be very expensive. Bob Hoffecker is president and his phone is (951) 833-5357. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have about club membership or requirements.

soLera paper CraFtersWe all had a great August and made some cute cards, including a couple of Christmas designs. We are looking forward to more fun in September. We are always looking for new members. Stop by and meet some new neighbors; you probably already know some of our wonderful ladies. Men are also welcome. Let your creative juices flow! We may even have a meeting devoted to Christmas gift tags.

This month we will be meeting on September 15 and September 29, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. There is also a 2 hour session on Saturday, September 17, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

sIppers On August 6 we met in the Oakmont rooms for a Blind Wine Tasting. This is an annual event that allows members to try different wines and learn about varietals. This year’s event Chaired by Glenn Bradd was very successful. Two whites and two reds were presented, tasted, and scored by individuals; then scores were compiled to get a consensus of what we like. There were good scores on many of the wines but, once again, we proved that price doesn’t determine what we like. Good to know!

Coming up on September 17, we are having an Art, Wine, and Cheese Mixer with a challenge. This is a new event and promises to be great fun! Please continue to next page

Why tops??? Last month, I did a survey. I asked some of our members:“Why did you choose TOPS?” and “Why do you continue in the TOPS program?” I thought you would enjoy the responses. I chose TOPS because:

A friend said let’s try it! And we are still here. It was at the Clubhouse and convenient. I wanted to meet new people who have my same interests in health, weight loss and motivation.

I wanted to lose weight and reach my goal of 150. I was gaining a few extra pounds every year. My cholesterol and triglycerides were up and I didn’t want to take medication.

Why do you continue?

The support and friendship. The support and accountability. I enjoy the friendships as well as the support and encouragement. I am happy with the results! I could not have done without this wonderful understanding group of new friends.

So, if you have been thinking about making a few healthier lifestyle changes, come join us. Get the support, encouragement and tools you need to make your goals a reality Feel better, have some fun and make new friends along the way. *** You are worth the changes that you make*** Mondays at 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Clubhouse Room 3. RECYCLING 101

The Sunshine Club is a Solera service organization. When a resident is ill, we send cards to cheer them. If they have an overnight hospital stay or if there is a

death in the immediate family, we call, pay a visit and deliver flowers or a plant. We accomplish this goal by collecting your recyclable aluminum cans and plastic bottles (marked with CA-CRV) in the area adjacent to the mail room.

To those residents who are new to recycling, please remember: All plastic containers with the CA-CRV imprint as well as all aluminum cans are recyclable.

The following are not recyclable: Plastic milk containers, baby formula, Clorox, peanut containers, Muscle Milk, or any other plastic containers NOT marked CA-CRV. In addition, we do not recycle wine or beer bottles.

A special thank you goes to all our Solera residents who have supported the Sunshine Club in the past and continue to do so by recycling their plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

soLera goLF CLubThe Solera Golf Club will be holding the Club Championship the first two weeks of September, the 5th and 12th. The two day event will be held on the Legends course which will be reopened after a month’s closure for reseeding. The 36-hole event will recognize the low score as club champion. The winner’s name will be inscribed on a perpetual trophy and presented at the Annual Election Banquet.

There will also be 3 flights of low net winners awarded.

Many of our members have been volunteering at the AJGA All Star Tourney at Tukwet Canyon, while others have been involved in the Toyota Tour Cup at Oak Valley. Most club members find it rewarding and fulfilling to be involved in community affairs with the young talent.

Club members are always striving to improve their golf game, breaking new low score barriers, for some it may be 100, 90, or 80. The competitive group keeps banging out low scores; many have been shooting scores in the 70’s. Some have been shooting their age, quite a fete.

Coming up soon will be our annual election of officers which is combined with the Annual Banquet which will be held October 22 at the Oakmont Clubhouse. Some of our board members will be leaving so we will need some new faces, energy and fresh ideas. If you are a new member or a long time member, please consider volunteering for the board.

Get out and join the fun; new members keep signing up. The $40.00 membership also includes a free round of golf at Tukwet Canyon, such a deal! For more information regarding the golf club contact Roger Larsen at (951) 769-3399 or Jack Sturm at (951) 846-1773.

boCCe baLL If someone asked you to give them the pallina, would you know what that is? It’s the small ball, usually yellow, that is thrown out first in the game of bocce. Your goal is to throw a larger bocce ball at the pallina so it lands as close to it as possible. Your team gets a point for each of their bocce balls closer to the pallina than those of the opposing team. Come out and try your skill. We will be meeting Sunday and Wednesday afternoons in September at 6:00 p.m. Call Joline at 769-9354 for more information.

Feature Articlessupport our troops

By Jesse Donardt

I have so many people and groups to thank for their support; it would take three Gazette articles to do it. Even then I would miss a lot. You have made the Solera Support Our Troops Project an outstanding success. We have never tried to be a large program that holds mass mailings to unknown soldiers. My hat is off to those who do that sort of thing. Our way is to be up close and personal. We follow a soldier and his unit from the first of his tour, until he or she is ready to return home with letters, cards, emails, photos and packages. We can never be as good as something from family, but we try to be a close second.

Thank you Richard and Joleen Carlson and your helpers for the hot dog sales. Marie Magdaleno, I can’t thank you enough for spearheading our fundraisers. To all of the Solera Clubs and Groups who have helped over the years, thank you. A big thanks goes to those individuals, clubs and groups that are supporting this upcoming BBQ, Pool Party. To my neighbor Joanne Brooks, who at a drop of a hat, will package up items to fit into our packages and for maintaining our Troop Board, thank you. My neighbor Larry Middlesworth is a supervisor of a Sears Home Services Team in Ontario, CA. He comes from a family rich in military service. Over the years, his team has supported our cause by collecting items for the troops. This year they expanded it to Sears’ teams in San Diego and Mesa, AZ. Thank you, Larry.

We are now over nine and a half years old and have mailed over 3,240 packages. I will never be able to count the emails, letters, etc. They have to outnumber the packages many times over.

DON’T FORGET TO BE PART OF THE BBQ/POOL PARTY ON SEPTEMBER 25 FROM 3:00-7:00 P.M.

Thank you for caring.

oFF the raaCFall events are here. We hope to see you at these fun events.

September 14: It’s Fair time and if you have never been or not been in a long time there are lots of things to see and do at the Los Angeles County Fair. You will find some new things this year. There will be a skating rink, a shopping promenade, Jurassic Planet, a tour of extinct dinosaurs and the Flower and Garden Pavilion. Dress cool, wear a hat, carry water and wear good walking shoes. There’s lots to see, do and buy! Bus leaves at 11:00 a.m. and returns at 6:00 p.m. $18.00 per person.

October 1: It’s the Fall Garage Sale. Time to drag out those old items just taking up space in your home and garage, plus all those things you bought at the last garage sale. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Permits can be purchased at the front desk for $5.00.

October 15: The Holiday Craft Show is just around the corner. Get all those projects done; there’s no time to waste. Table cost is $10.00. Show starts at 8:30 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.

October 29: Better get those costumes made for our Halloween Party. We’ve got good food, great prizes, silly looking people and lots of fun. Look for the details in the mailroom flyers and the October Gazette.

For further information on these events, check with the front desk, Soleraovg.com, and flyers in the mailroom or the Gazette.

“thIs and that” By Cher Koleszar

Labor Day for many retirement-aged educators’ marks both the beginning of a new school year as well as the end of summer. However, with most of our grandkids back in school by mid-August now, this time of year seems, to me, to kick start the count down to the end of the year. Whether this is a residual response from 44 years of teaching where, like most kids, we track time from one holiday to the next - Labor Day - Patriot’s Day - Columbus Day – Halloween - Veterans Day - Thanksgiving Break - Winter Break…blink and the year’s over! So, in an effort to slow down time (as if that’s possible – ha ha) let’s spend a bit of time thinking about the here and now. For someone like me who has to plan everything with not only a list but a different colored list for everything I’m planning… this could be a challenge!

This morning when I got up, I poured a cup of coffee, went out and sat on the patio to enjoy the view and think about staying in the moment. What could I do to stay in the here and now and to stop this obsessive planning that I do to get ready for the holidays??? I could try meditation or yoga (note to self – look up yoga routines and meditation strategies on the internet). I could take Max for a walk but he tends to pull on the leash and pulls me off balance (note to self – research special kinds of leashes that will stop his bad manners so that I can start walking next weekend) or I could do a couple of Sudoku puzzles which I have become addicted to since I retired the first time (note to self – organize the Sudoku’s in the puzzle drawer). As I fetch another cup of coffee, I realize my moment in time is just another list…okay, I give up; I’m hopeless and I’m laughing all the way to the

This is the best time to prepare to sell your home. Summer and fall months find home prices at their highest values of the year. With sufficient listings available, you can make a good selection. If buying, this is the right time. Staying informed about what’s happening in the real estate market - where it’s at, and where it’s going - will allow you to make the best decisions based upon concrete information. It is my hope that the following information will be beneficial to help you meet, and exceed your real estate goals.

REAL ESTATE QUOTES“Real Estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor can it be carried away. Purchased with common sense, paid for in full, and managed with reasonable care, it is about the safest investment in the world.” -Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Ninety percent of all millionaires become so through owning real estate. More money has been made in real estate than in all industrial investments combined. The wise young man or wage earner of today invests his money in real estate.” -Andrew Carnegie“The major fortunes in America have been made in land.” -John D. Rockefeller

“Buy land, they’re not making it anymore.” ~Mark Twain – Author

“We have grown up”By Marcia Casem

Seven years ago a simple idea of helping new residents at Solera Oak Valley Greens learn about our community became a reality.

The Communications Advisory Committee worked for almost a year to develop a Welcome Book for new residents in our Community. We gathered information about out Community Rules, our many clubs, groups and committees, our Board of Directors and our Management Company. Finally in 2010, our hard work paid off; the Welcome Book was finished and a Welcome Group was formed. We began with Sandi Joel, Judy Charlick, Barbara Otte, Sue Ann Summers, Vickie Hale and Marcia Casem. We quickly enlisted 14 more volunteers. We did this without much fanfare and worked quietly and got together yearly to share stories of the experiences we had and the new friends we met.

Recently the Board of Directors recognized our hard work, its value to the community and established a New Resident Welcome Advisory Committee. Marcia Casem and Judi McWilliams are Co-Chairpersons. The Committee will meet regularly throughout the year to provide training, guidance and support needed to perform this wonderful service. We will regularly update the Welcome Book with new and current information. We continue to appreciate our current Welcome Volunteers and are always looking for new volunteers to join our team. Please contact Marcia Casem or Judi McWilliams if you are interested in welcoming new residents to our community.

Yes, Solera, we have grown up!
