Principal’s Message

Across the school this week we have been managing the school with a large number of staff absences due to illness. Can I ask that you please do not send your child to school if they are sick. The school environment is also not the best place for your child to recover and get better, so you may choose to keep them home that extra day. The cold and flu season has appeared to ‘hit’ us earlier than normal this year so by working together we can work to fight the germs!

Staff spent last Friday writing reports. I enjoy reading the reports and getting a further understanding of the students and where their learning is at. Parent/Teacher Interviews will again be held during the last week of term, and more information will be sent out about these shortly.

Our students in Years 4-6 have participated in the Department’s Attitudes to School Survey online this week. I will receive the results in Term 3 and these will be shared with staff, students and our school community. The information received provides feedback about what our students think about their teacher, their learning and our school as a whole.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Sport’s Club Movie Night Fundraiser next Thursday night. It is set to be a great night. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event happen.

We are making progress with our courtyard area. We are now searching for some volunteers who could paint the fruit bins for us. Please see the front office if you can help out. The courtyard is going to look great when it is completed!

The Parents’ Club have also purchased a cubby house through their fundraising for our school yard. This will be delivered to the school during the holidays, ready for the students to use when they return. As a school we are continuing to look for ways to improve our facilities and this was the result of an idea presented by students. I value the input of our students and I will be meeting with the Junior School Council next week to talk to them more about the cubby and how it will be used.

Have a great Friday and enjoy the long weekend. See you all back on Tuesday!

2017 STUDENT AWARDS

PRINCIPAL AWARD Congratulations to Bruce from Year

4 Sibley on receiving the Principal

Award. Bruce has worked extremely hard

this year. Bruce is Mr Sibley’s right hand

man, without him Mr Sibley and the grade

would be lost. He is a very helpful person

who is always looking for jobs to do for

other people. Sometimes he gets frustrated when he is unable to

do something but has learnt this is okay and quickly gets back on

task. He is a great self reflector and is always thinking of ways to

improve himself. Bruce enjoys working with a range of different

people and is often seen helping out the younger students

especially the Foundation students. Bruce has great resilience,

this was seen recently on camp when he attempted all activities

even when he wasn’t so comfortable. We all have great

admiration for the truly great person that Bruce is. Well done

Bruce!

ACADEMIC AWARD

Congratulations to Cody from

Foundation Shannon on receiving

the Academic Award. Cody is a very

bright and focused student, the kind any

teacher is very lucky to have in their

classroom. He is always committed to

achieving his personal best and takes

the time to ensure that the quality of his

work presentation always matches its content. Cody likes to be

challenged and often finds ways to go above and beyond what a

task asks of him to extend himself further. Cody’s reading is

wonderful to listen to, it shows great fluency and he is even able to

respond to the punctuation to add expression. He often finds the

time in the classroom to choose a picture story book from our class

library and is able to read these independently. Cody shows a

great interest in maths and often shares with me addition and

subtraction facts and strategies that he has picked up from his big

brothers. He then brings this learning back into the classroom and

finds ways to apply it to our number tasks. I love your commitment

and enthusiasm for learning Cody, keep it up!

CyberSafety Tip of the Week:

Stay calm and open (this means no big reactions!)

Think about how you usually react when your kid comes with a problem. Can you feel the frown

or the stress setting in? Here’s where you have to stop and reset your reaction. You want your

child to feel that if they tell you about the situation, that you’re not immediately going to get really

upset or angry or anxious. You want them to know you’re going to stay level-headed and able to

have a good, helpful chat. The best way to do this is to make sure you have an open dialogue

from the beginning. If you don’t already have this sort of relationship, trying it. Talk to them

without being judgemental or angry, and make them feel like they can come to you with anything,

without fear of being reprimanded.

Veggies and Dip

Vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fibres essential for a healthy diet. It’s

recommended children and youth get 3 to 5 servings of vegetables every day,

depending on their age. When your kids are in school all day, it’s important to

make sure they get their vegetables. Unfortunately, a lot of kids are picky eaters

and averse to veggies, especially at school. And for many kids, veggies and dip

are a lunch box favourite because of the tasty dip that gets them to eat it. But

dips can be quite fattening and contain a lot of unwanted preservatives. As an

alternative, make a low-fat yogurt-based dip to cut the calories and fat.

House Lunch On Tuesday 20th June all students are invited to wear their house

colour t-shirts to school. At lunchtime House Teams will come together

to eat their lunch and sing their house song. This is also a rubbish free

lunch and it will be announced which house as the least amount of

rubbish.

T-shirts can be purchased from the front office at a cost of $6. We will be having a house

lunch once per term to continue to build on our schools of value of teamwork and

community.
