© 2008 Nature Publishing Group Supplementary Information 1 Samples For field details of Steens basalt samples, see Johnson et al (1998). For field details of Imnaha, Grande Ronde and Picture Gorge basalt samples see Appendix A of Hooper (2000). All data new to this study are presented by formation in the Supplementary Information 2. For the Grande Ronde and Picture Gorge basalts, new trace element data were matched with existing Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic data on the same samples from the references cited in the main text to plot Fig. 3. For the Steens basalts, trace element data were matched with unpublished isotope data on the same samples kindly supplied by Barry Hanan (personal communication) in plotting Fig. 3. Details of analytical methods Major and trace elements All samples, archived at Washington State University, were anlyzed for major and trace elements in the GeoAnalytical Laboratory at Washington State University. Major elements, Ni, Cr, Sc, V, Ba, Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Nb, Ga, Cu, Zn, Pb, La, Ce, Nd and Th were analyzed in low-dilution fused beads (2:1 flux:rock powder) using a Thermo-ARL Advant XP+ X-ray fluorescence spectrometer; see Johnson et al. (1999) for full details of method. Samples were also analyzed after dissolution by ICP-MS for REE, Ba, Th, Nb, Y, Hf, Ta, U, Pb, Rb, Cs, Sr, Sc and Zr using the method of Knaack et al. (1994). Isotopes Elmental purification and analysis procedures for Sr, Nd and Pb are described in Ramos (1992) and Wolff & Ramos (2003). Sr isotopes were normalised to 86 Sr/ 88 Sr = 0.1194 and NBS 987 Sr standard results averaged 0.710263 (n=7). Nd isotopes were normalised to 146 Nd/ 144 Nd = 0.7219 and results for La Jolla and JNdi- 1 were 0.511857 (n = 1) and 0.512087 (n = 3) respectively. Solutions analyzed for Pb isotopes were doped with NBS 997 Tl and normalised to 205 Tl/ 203 Tl = 2.387075. Results for NBS 981 were 206 Pb/ 204 Pb = 16.930, 207 Pb/ 204 Pb = 15.482, and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb = 36.672 (n = 5). Geochemical modelling Mantle mixing models Mixtures of Imnaha source with other types of mantle, calculated using the depleted and OIB-source mantle elemental abundances of Stracke et al. (2003), Salters & Stracke (2004) and Willibold & Stracke (2006), are shown as thin black dotted lines on Fig. 2. Curves representing mixtures between Imnaha source mantle and two depleted mantle compositions within the Pacific MORB array are shown. In addition, mixtures between depleted MORB crust and OIB-source mantle, and between fluid-fluxed depleted mantle, are shown. Fluid-fluxed depleted mantle was modelled by adding sufficient Sr and Pb to depleted mantle to raise Sr/Nd to 32 and Pb/Nd to 0.16. Note that Steens and Picture Gorge basalts may additionally have experienced minor crustal contamination that serves to slightly elevate 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (Brandon et al., 1993). Note also that mixing lines are straight on the 207 Pb/ 206 Pb vs. 208 Pb/ 206 Pb diagram (Fig. 2c) and are omitted for clarity; clearly, Steens and Picture Gorge basalts can be modelled as mixtures of Imnaha and depleted mantle as represented by Pacific MORB, and Grande Ronde compositions as mixtures of Imnaha and crust represented by rhyolites. Interaction of Imnaha compositions with continental crust to produce Grande Ronde compositions is modelled using the EC-AFC approach of Bohrson & Spera (2001); simulations are shown as plum-colored arrows on Figs. 2 and 3 (arrowheads point in the direction of increasing crustal component). A range of Imnaha basalt starting compositions, representing both the American Bar and Rock Creek chemical types, Hooper et al., 1984) and granitoid crustal contaminants were modelled. Thermodynamic parameters employed in the EC-AFC simulations were estimated using MELTS (Ghiorso & Sack, 1995; Asimow & Ghiorso, 1998). Thermal and compositional parameters are given in Supplementary Information Table 1. Note that the curves depicted show the total extent modelled for the ranges of parameters listed in the table; a total of 37 simulations were performed and most results lay between the curves shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
