Founded in 1868, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is a premier regional public comprehensive university known for academic excellence and high-quality, career-oriented undergraduate and graduate programs. As the fourth-largest campus in the UW System, UW-Whitewater enrolls more than 12,000 students in 69 majors and 14 graduate programs. The 400-acre campus includes 40 major buildings, a nature preserve and an arboretum.

The university serves as a regional destination for patrons of the arts, with venues such as the Young Auditorium, Light Recital Hall, Hicklin Studio Theatre and Crossman Gallery attracting 100,000 visitors annually. The athletic department has nine men’s and 11 women’s competitive sports in some of the biggest and best facilities in NCAA Division III.
The College of Arts and Communicationoffersprogramsinthetraditionalareasofstudyaswellasinemergingfields.Thecollegeishometothemultimediadigitalartsdegreeprogram,thefirstoneofitskindintheUWSystem.ThecommunicationprogramisalsooneofthelargestinWisconsinandtheUpperMidwest.
TheCollege of Business and EconomicsisWisconsin’spremierbusinessschool.Thecollegeoffers14majorsthatprovidestudentswiththeskillsandknowledgetosucceedintoday’sglobalbusinessenvironment.Studentsandfacultyfrequentlyworktogetheroncollegeoutreachactivitiestoassistregionalbusinessestostartupandinongoingproblemsolving.

For the fifth consecutive year, UW-Whitewater is the only public university and only state agency named a Top Workplace in southeast Wisconsin. The regional list, compiled by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, ranks public and private organizations based on employee surveys.

From science explorationandartisticendeavorstoentrepreneurship,UW-Whitewateriscommittedtocommunityengagement.Withpartnershipsinregionalbusinesses,governmentandnonprofitorganizations,ourfaculty,staffandstudentsactivelyreachoutintothecommunityandcollaborateonprojectsandactivitiesthatpromoteeconomicdevelopment,enrichartisticofferingsandprovideprofessionaldevelopmentandlifelonglearningopportunities.It’spartofthecampuscultureandevidentineverydiscipline.
Theseeffortshavegarnerednationalrecognition.UW-Whitewaterisarecipientofthe2015CommunityEngagementClassificationfromtheCarnegieFoundationfortheAdvancementofTeaching.Thisdesignation—bestowedononly361collegesanduniversitiesintheUnitedStates—honorscampusesthatareimprovingteachingandlearning,producingresearchthatmakesadifferenceincommunities,andrevitalizingtheircivicandacademicmissions.
CampusCentersandOutreachServices
The College of Business and Economicsservesbusinessesintheregionthroughavarietyofoutreachcentersthatofferfacultyandprofessionalstaffexpertiseandemploystudentinterns.Thesecentersareintendedtoservethepublicaswellasgivestudentsappliedbusinessexperience.
TheFiscal and Economic Research Centerhelpsareabusinesses,localgovernmentalagenciesandnot-for-profitorganizationswitheconomicresearchbytappingintoUW-Whitewaterfacultyexpertisetoprovideoutreachservicestomembersoftheregionalcommunity.Inachievingthismission,FERCprovideshigh-caliberstudentswiththeopportunitytoworkcloselywithfacultyexpertsinapplyingconceptsandtheoriestopractical,real-worldcases.Practicalproject-basedworknotonlyenhancesstudents’educationalexperience,italsomaximizestheirvaluetofutureemployersbyprovidingthemwithaneconomictoolsetusefultomodernfirms.

Newacademicprogramsandcovetedinternshipsofferedthroughthe Institute for Water Businessareproducingwater-literategraduateswhounderstandboththescienceandbusinessofthiscriticalnaturalresource.TheInstitute,thefirstofitskindintheUnitedStates,assistsstudentsandorganizationsindevelopingwaterbusinessacumenandcapacity.Througheducation,researchandmulti-stakeholdercollaboration,participantslearntosuccessfullyrespondtowaterbusinessissues,challengesandopportunities.WithfundingfromtheUWSystemIncentiveGrantprogram,UW-WhitewaterisworkinginpartnershipwithUW-MilwaukeeandUW-Parksideon$5.4millioninwater-relatedeconomicdevelopmentinitiatives.Theseincludearesearchandtrainingcenterforthecommercializationofaquacultureandaquaponicsandthecreationofawatertechnologyaccelerator.TheUniversityofWisconsin-WhitewaterLaunch Padisastudentstartupacceleratorprogramthateducates,inspiresandassistsintheaccelerationofstartups.LaunchPadisavailabletoundergraduateandgraduatestudentsenrolledatUW-Whitewater.StudentsadmittedintotheLaunchPadprogrambecomeLaunchPadScholarswhoreceiveexperttraining,coachingandmentorship,businessmodel/plandevelopmentandviabilityanalysis,accesstostart-upresources,spaceattheworld-classInnovationCenter,theoptiontotakeLaunchPadforindependentstudycredit,andmore.
TheWisconsin Small Business Development CenteratUW-Whitewaterispartofastatewidenetworksupportingentrepreneursandbusinessownersthroughno-cost,confidentialconsultingandtargetededucationalprograms.LocalSBDCexpertsfacilitateimprovementandgrowthforsmallandemergingmid-sizecompaniesandhelplaunchsuccessfulenterprises.TheWisconsinSBDCatUW-WhitewaterishostedbytheCollegeofBusinessandEconomics.WisconsinSBDCisaprogramofUW-ExtensionfundedinpartthroughacooperativeagreementwiththeU.S.SmallBusinessAdministration.
TheWisconsin Innovation Service Center(WISC)helpsclientsmakeinformeddecisionsbyprovidingresearchonmarketopportunities,customersandcompetition.Asaresult,inventorscanbetterunderstandtheiridea’smarketpotential,identifylicensingpartnersandsolvemanufacturinganddistributionchallenges.Businessownersgainacompetitiveadvantagethroughassessmentsthatprovideup-to-date,in-depthknowledge.WISCmarketresearchhelpscompaniesstrategicallydiversifytheircustomerbaseandidentifytargetmarketsforcost-effectivegrowth.
The Wisconsin Center for IT Services(Wi-CITS)assistssmallbusinessesandnot-for-profitorganizationsbyprovidingITsolutions,includingwebsitedesignanddevelopment.Studentinternsandfacultysupervisorshelpclientswithoptimizingsearchengineresults,improvingwebsitesecurityandcreatinguser-friendlydesignsandeasyupdates.Wi-CITSalsooffersnoncreditcoursesinwebdesignanddevelopmentandinprojectmanagementleadingtocertificates.
Dedicatedin2011,theInnovation CenteristhecornerstoneoftheWhitewaterUniversityTechnologyPark.TheInnovationCenterwasspeciallydesignedtooffercollaborativespace,resourcesandservicestoentrepreneursandgrowingbusinesses.ThosewhobuildorgrowtheircompanyintheWhitewatercommunitybenefitfromsupportfromUW-Whitewater,theWhitewaterCommunityDevelopmentAuthority,theCityofWhitewaterandthebroaderentrepreneurialecosystemofsoutheasternWisconsin.TheInnovationCenterisa37,500-square-footLEEDGold-certifiedbuildingwithfiveconferenceroomsandthree500-square-footwetlabsthatislocatedneartheuniversityanditsabundanceofresources.

TheCenterforStudentswithDisabilities
UW-Whitewater proudlyprovidescomprehensiveservicesandcutting-edgesuccessprogrammingforstudentswithdisabilities.Since1972,theCenterforStudentswithDisabilitieshasprovidedawidearrayofaccommodations,supportservices,auxiliaryaidsandprogramsforstudents,staffandallmembersoftheUW-Whitewatercommunity.StudentswithdisabilitiesareanessentialpartofthediversityandaccessibilitythatdefinetheUW-Whitewatercampus,andCSDiscommittedtosupportingadiverseandstimulatingacademiccommunity.Aspartofourmission,CSDactivelycollaborateswithstudents,facultyandstafftocreateaninclusive,accessibleuniversityexperience.CSDisdedicatedtopromotingdiversityandanequalopportunityforstudentstofullyparticipateinallaspectsoftheireducationanduniversitylife.
TeacherPreparationPrograms
Since its founding,UW-Whitewaterhasdistinguisheditselfasaleaderinteachereducation.TheCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudiesisknownforitsexcellenceinteacherpreparationandleadershipindevelopinginnovativeteachereducationprograms.ThemissionoftheteachereducationprogramisthepreparationofeffectiveteachersandotherschoolpersonnelinordertomeettheneedsofdiversestudentpopulationsinthepublicschoolsandinothereducationalsettingsthroughoutthestateofWisconsin.Infulfillingitsmission,thecollegeemphasizesqualityandexcellenceandembracestheWisconsinTeacherStandardsaswellasthestandardssetforthbytheNationalCouncilfortheAccreditationofTeacherEducation.TheFutureTeacherProgramisdesignedtoincreasestudentlearningandprovidepracticalapplicationoftheknowledgethatstudentsgainintheirteachereducationcourseswiththegoalofincreasingstudentretentionandgraduationrates.TheMinorityTeacherPreparationProgramstrivestoincreaseenrollment,retentionandgraduationratesofundergraduatemulticulturalstudentswhomajorineducation.

UndergraduateResearch
TheUndergraduate Research ProgramatUW-Whitewaterwasestablishedin1995andisonetheoldestprogramsofitskindwithintheUWSystem.Thenumberofparticipantsincreasedtenfoldtowellover200studentsperyear,includingincreasesamongstudentsinartsandcommunicationandbusinessmajorsandstudentsofopportunity.
Inadditiontotraditionalundergraduateresearchgrantsthatsupportstudent-initiatedresearchprojects,UW-Whitewatersupportsawidevarietyoffaculty-mentoredprojectsandentrepreneurshiptraininginregionalbusinessincubationprograms.
Onesuchprogram,theResearchApprenticeshipProgram,hassupportedover200studentsinthelastfouryearsaspaidresearchassistantsandhassignificantlyincreasedparticipationfromstudentsfromunderrepresentedminoritiesandlow-incomeandfirst-generationbackgrounds.Participationfromunderrepresentedminoritystudentsinthisprogramis36.4percent(comparedto14.8percentoncampusoverall),studentsfromlow-incomehouseholdsrepresent42.7percentofprogramparticipants(comparedto32.3percentoverall),and46.2percentareself-identifiedasfirst-generationstudents(comparedto44.3percentoverall).TheResearchApprenticeshipProgramwasawardedthe2015BoardofRegentsDiversityAwardandrecognizedashavingasignificantimpactinpromotingequityineducationaloutcomesfromhistoricallyunderrepresentedstudentpopulations.
UW-Whitewateralsoawardsupto15SummerUndergraduateResearchFellowshipseachyeartoallowstudentstoimmersethemselvesinfull-timeresearchandappliedlearningexperiences,andprovidessupportforstudentstodisseminatetheirworkintheNationalConferenceforUndergraduateResearch,UWSystemSymposiumofResearchandCreativeActivity,andvariousinternational,nationalandregionalprofessionalconferences.
UW-WhitewaterisroutinelyamongthemostprolificpresentersattheNationalConferenceonUndergraduateResearch,typicallyonlysecondtothehostinstitutionforthenumberofpresenters.UW-WhitewateralsohoststwoannualUndergraduateResearchDaysayearwithstudentpresentersfromallfourcollegesrepresented.
STEMEducationandPrograms
UW-Whitewater’s commitmenttoandaccomplishmentsinSTEMeducationincludeuniqueundergraduateresearchopportunities,developmentofSTEMeducatorsandsupport/mentoringforgroupsthatareunderrepresentedinSTEM.WithsupportfromtheWisconsinAllianceforMinorityParticipation,UWSystemGrowthAgendaInstitutionalChangeprogram,federalSTEM-relatedgrantsandUW-WhitewaterAcademicAffairsfunding,UW-WhitewaterhasdevelopedandmaintainedseveralprogramsaimedatenhancingstudentpreparationinSTEMfieldsandretentioninSTEMmajors:
1.ScienceBootCampincludesatwo-weekintensivesummerprogramthatpreparesstudentsforSTEMcourses.

FacultyAccomplishments
International reputationRobertBenjamin,associateprofessorofphysics,andAndrewEagon,aphysicsmajor,wereawardedaccesstotheHubbleSpaceTelescopeforatotalof21hours.Theyarestudyingaclusterofstarsinoneofthemostancientpartsofthegalaxytodeepenscientificunderstandingofthecosmos.Sincecomingtocampus,Eaganhashadhands-onexperiencewithbiophysics,computerprogrammingandcomputersystems.Butthismaytopthat.“ThebiggestkickisbeingabletosayyouaredoingresearchforNASA,”hesaid.
Banking on researchTwofacultymembersreceivedasubstantialfinancialendorsementtocontinuetheirresearchintominoritybanking.W.K.KelloggFoundationawardedRussKashianandRichardMcGregorya$400,000grant.Kashian,aprofessorofeconomics,andMcGregory,assistantvicechancellorformulticulturalaffairsandstudentsuccess,willresearchbestpracticesforencouragingyoungpeopleofcolortousebanksfortheirfinancialneedsinanefforttoimprovecommunities.
Assessment through artKristinGobleandCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudiescolleaguesreceiveda$565,000grantfromtheprestigiousMargaretA.CargillFoundation.Itwillallowfacultytostudyarts-basedmethodsthatleadtoexcellenceinteacherpreparationandperformanceassessment.
Distinguished scholarshipProfessorofSociologyJimWinshipwasawardedaFulbrightScholarTeaching/ResearchawardthattookhimtoCartagena,Colombia,toteachundergraduatecoursesattheUniversidaddeCartagenaandtoresearchcommunitiesmarginalizedbyarmedconflict.ThisisWinship’ssecondFulbrightaward.Hisfirst,in2005,launchedhisresearchinElSalvador.
AthleticAccomplishments
Forthefifthstraightyear,UW-Whitewaterfinishedamongthetop10intheDirectors’Cupstandings,rankingsixthoutof450DivisionIIIinstitutions.TheWarhawkstotaled877.75pointstopostthehighestfinishofanyWisconsinIntercollegiateAthleticConferenceschoolforthefifthstraightyearandplaceamongthenation’stop15fortheeighthconsecutiveseason.AwardedannuallybytheNationalAssociationofCollegiateDirectorsofAthletics,theDirectors’Cuphonorsathleticsuccessinmen’sandwomen’scollegesportsintheUnitedStates.
Wheelchair basketballTheWarhawkswontheir12thtitleinprogramhistoryafterdefeatingtheUniversityofIllinois68-55intheNationalIntercollegiateWheelchairBasketballTournamentfinalinColumbia,Missouri.
GymnasticsSophomoreKatieFiorillicapturedthe2015NationalCollegiateWomen’sGymnasticsall-aroundandvaulttitles.TheUW-WhitewaterGymnasticsteamtiedforsecondoverallinthetournament,justthree-tenthsofapointbehindeventhostUW-LaCrosse.

Groundbreaking cell research lands Warhawks in the journal ‘Science’Science,oneofthelargestandmostprestigiousjournalsintheworld,publishedanarticleco-authoredbyagroupofWarhawkresearchers.LarryWilliams,abiologymajorfromMilwaukee,andChristopherVeldkamp,associateprofessorofchemistry,alongwithrecentgradsGaryChaffeeandAndrewPhillips,werepartofaninternationalcollaborationinvolvingresearchonimmunecellsandhowtheymovewithinthebody.Theirworkcouldleadtonewcancertreatments.
“MostscientistsdreamofgettingpublishedinScience,andyouraveragescientistwouldbeextremelythrilledtobepublishedinSciencejustonce,”Veldkampsaid.“ThisisareallybigdealfortheresearchersthatcontributedtothisworkasUW-Whitewaterundergraduates.”
Student wins national CEO startup competitionSamLukach’sbusinessideacametohimashewaslookingforawayusethespaceinhisresidencehallroommoreefficiently.AfterrealizinghisTVdidn’tfit,hewenttothehardwarestoreandboughttwopiecesofmetalandbentthemintospecializedTVmountsforhisloftedbed.“Thenmyroommateandfloormateswantedtobuythem,andthat’swhenIknewthiswasaneed,”saidLukach.Inthatmoment,HUKTVMountswasborn,andnowLukach,acommunicationsmajorfromPewaukee,isbusypromotingoneofthehotteststudentbusinessideasinthenation.HewonfirstplaceattheCollegiateEntrepreneurs’Organizationnationalconference,heldNov.5-7inKansasCity,Missouri.
Art student wins Tiffany & Co. scholarshipTheRhodeIslandSchoolofDesigninProvidenceonlyacceptsuptosixstudentsperyeartoitsrigorousgraduateprograminmetalsmithing.ArtmajorandrecentgradNetaRonearnedoneofthecovetedspotsandiscontinuinghereducationthere.Ron,whofocusesonmetalsandjewelrymaking,alsoreceivedaprestigiousTiffany&Co.Foundationscholarship.“ImakebecauseImake.BecauseIhavetomake.BecauseIcan’tstopmaking,”shesaid.“Itisnotabouttheobject.Itisabouttheprocess.It’sthejourney.”
Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity best chapter in the countryAttheAlphaSigmaPhinationalconference,theWarhawkchaptertookhometheGrandSeniorPresident’sCup—thefraternity’shighesthonor–whichrecognizesexcellenceincommunityservice,philanthropy,recruitmentandprofessionaldevelopment.DavidKroeze,amathematicseducationmajorfromMilton,said,“Ourguysunderstandthatwe’reneverdonegrowing.It’syourjobtodevelopyourselfintellectually,sociallyandmorally.”Academically,they’veachievedhugegains.Injustonesemester,AlphaSigmaPhiraiseditscumulativeGPAfrom2.79to3.14.Inavisibleandpopularannualtradition,membersgrowfacialhaireachautumnforthe“Movember”fundraisertocreateawarenessformen’shealthissues.
