Art Hunts
Art hunts involve looking for art in your community. This might be within a building such as
an art exhibit at your school or a special presentation at an art center. If your city supports
the arts, you might even be able to incorporate a variety of pieces such as sculpture and
architecture into your hunt.
With the ideas below, think of individual hunt items or sets that can be created. Its up
to you.
ArchitectureFind and photograph specific buildings. Make this type of hunt more of a challenge by
asking for architectural elements or provide the name of the building and architect.
Another way to incorporate architecture is to define a single element and find how many
photos they can take of that element such as elevators, stairs, windows, arches, etc.
Art Depicting Nature
Find a piece of art that is designed to reflect nature. You may wish to narrow this downfurther by only accepting either natural materials or natural subject matter.
Artist HuntProvide a list of artists / galleries in your area. Ask for photos of either specific pieces or
anything by that artist. Ask for the title of the piece to be provided for verification. You will
need to talk to galleries / artists to get permission.
EXAMPLE: In our area, we have First Fridays during the summer where all art galleries
are open in the evening to encourage the community to participate. This would be a great
way to tie the photo scavenger hunt with an existing event.
Create Art NaturallyArrange found natural items into artistic creations and photograph. This might be as
simple as stacking rocks or as complicated as building sand castles.
Faces in PlacesOur minds try to make sense of our world. This is why we frequently see shapes and
figures in things that arent truly there. Ask your teams to use their creativity to find
faces in man-made and natural items. See facesinplaces.blogspot.com for a visual
representation.

Graffi tiGraffi ti art is made with aerosol paints and lettering. You can find it on walls, trains and
just about any flat surface. Graffi ti hunts can include finding letters, styles or colors.
Logo SearchProvide a list of nothing but the names of items / places and have your scavengers find
the logos. You can also provide a partial shot of the logo for them as a clue.
Natures CanvasProvide a list of items for your scavengers to create on-site with the materials there. For
example, a sand castle on a beach, rock formations from beach stones or fairy houses in
wooded areas. Only the natural items found at your site may be used. Photographs will
allow you to take the beauty with you while not removing any natural items.
Place ArtHost a creative session and have each team make art items to place in public places. The
hunt is for a place that will allow them to put the art they have created there. Photograph
the proof that the item you made is placed. Then, leave your art there for others to enjoy.
SculptureSome locations have sculptural items in a wide variety of areas. Parks and campuses might
have multiple pieces in a smaller area. You can make this type of scavenger hunt simple
by asking for as many pictures of sculpture the hunters can find (younger groups). Make
it more diffi cult by asking your hunters to also provide the name / artist of the piece. You
could also ask for a brief sentence or two on initial impressions of a piece of sculpture.
Street Art
For ideas on what you can include as street art see the Adult Enrichment Projectsbadge program Street Art Explore. You can ask for photos of any examples of street art.
Alternatively, ask for as many different types as they can find or the widest variety of
media used to create the street art. You may make this a larger event by requiring that the
teams make street art and then photograph it.
Yard ArtWhile most would not consider yard decorations art, it is often how many people express
themselves. Fads in yard art are prevalent. For example, many people put blow-up items
on their lawns for holidays. Locally, we have an artist who makes steel butterflies from 1-4
feet wide. Choose to do a quantity hunt with the same type of item, focus on a holiday
theme or even try to find the -est largest, most colorful or ugliest.
