JULY 2009

EDITORIALDear Readers,

I love this time of year, when the nights stay light for longer giving you the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Bbq´s, pools, hottubs and out door living are all featured in the magazine this month. There is a buzz in our household as the new Harry Potter film is out on the 15th July so have a go at our Harry Quiz to see how much you actually do know about the series! You may surprise yourself. Finally, I make no appologies for the dog camp article on page 38. Sometimes to get the message across, you need to use shock tactics however since the article was written a horse has appeared at the camp but with it´s front legs tied together. I have seen the picture and can assure you that it is as horrific as it sounds. This cannot be allowed to continue so please dig deep into your pockets and help support this worthy cause and help bring and end to the suffering (on our doorstep) of these poor animals.

Customs & EtiquetteAre you being offensive during your travels? 1 “Oh, I love your settee!” A harmless compliment (and perhaps a little white lie) when visiting someone’s house in the west but be wary of making such a remark in Arab and African countries such as Jordan, Senegal and Nigeria. Your host might think he or she is obliged to give you the item in question. An awkward situation all round, especially if you have to cart the sofa home on your back.

2 It’s easy enough to be offended in your own country by intrusive tourists snapping your photo without permission. On other occasions, you might be that intrusive tourist yourself. But the offence can go much further in certain

African countries, such as in rural Ghana, where people might fear (it makes a certain sense) that by photographing them you are stealing their soul.

3 When you ask someone in Britain, “How are you?”, the last thing you want is an honest response. “Really depressed,” they might answer or, perhaps equally alarmingly, “Happier than ever!” The question has become a largely empty formality.

Not so in Scandinavian countries such as Denmark. There you would only ask, “How are you?” of a really close friend and you would have to be prepared for a genuine and possibly lengthy reply. And just in case it ever comes up, never greet a Ukrainian over any kind of threshold, such as a doorway. It’s considered incredibly bad luck.

4 Arriving 10 minutes late to a dinner party or drinks bash might be considered polite in Britain but it’s actually rather modest by some countries’ standards. An hour’s lateness is standard in laidback Argentina.

Even three hours would not be thought rude for

10simplesuggestionsto follow

some informal occasions. And which country in the world puts the most emphasis on turning up exactly on time? No prizes for guessing the likely candidate. It’s Germany.

5 Slurping your soup (or indeed your coffee or tea) might be a no-no at your average British table but in Japan it is considered good table manners. Slurping indicates you are enjoying the meal.

6 Clocks may be common presents in western countries on someone’s retirement, say but they’re certainly not the gift that keeps on giving in China. There clocks are a symbol of death. Similarly, don’t give anything coming in a set of four, such as placemats, in China. To the Chinese, four is like the number 13 in other cultures, including Britain’s.

7 Be wary about giving flowers anywhere. In some Scandinavian countries, white roses are associated with mourning. In many Latin American nations, purple blooms are. In France, white lilies and chrysanthemums are signs of death. And in Latvia, funereal flowers are red. Perhaps, on reflection, avoid giving flowers at all as gifts in a foreign country.

To change the mood, what is a good gift to give someone in a Muslim country? A compass. The recipient can use it to direct him or herself towards Mecca

8 Burgers might have spread around the world but chowing down on one with both hands certainly hasn’t. Don’t eat anything with your left hand in Muslim countries or in India. That part of the body is used for an entirely different function in such places, one people don’t want to be reminded of when eating!

The left hand really is a poor relation of the right in these parts of the world; you should also avoid gesturing or shaking hands with it. As a curious variation, if their right hand is wet or dirty Senegalese people will offer their right wrist for a handshake or their left hand, but with an apology. Clearly, if you’re left-handed and want to travel widely, it may be time to retrain.

9 Is this the way to your famous shrine/mosque/temple? Be careful how you ask such questions when travelling. Pointing with your finger is rude in so many countries it’s probably wise just to abandon the gesture altogether overseas. Use an open hand instead to indicate direction.

Should you ever find yourself in an Iranian carpet souk and want to signal to the rug dealer that he’s finally named a price you can agree on, please don’t give him the thumbs-up. You’d actually be telling him where he could stick his offer not the desired effect.

Watch out in Greece however, as an open palm can say “I´m throwing dirt in your face.” Its a common insult you might see in action by taxi drivers and small children alike. So how you say do you wave good bye? Have you ever noticed how Queen Elizabeth waves? She uses

a slightly

cupped hand that she

moves in a slow circle. That is rather

posh for Greece but the cupped hand is the

same. Just make a one-hand clap with the back of your hand

facing whomever you are waving to and you’ll be just fine.

10 What’s wrong with your poor feet? In many non-western countries it is customary to sit down cross-legged for a meal or a chinwag. If you do, make sure you’re not pointing your soles in anyone’s general direction. It’s a serious affront in Muslim countries.

Curiously enough, baring your soles can also offend in Russia. In Buddhist countries, such as Thailand, sitting with your feet pointed in the direction of a Buddha statue is a no-no.

Changes on both professional and personal fronts are in store for you in the next few months. The cosmos are nudging your attention in the direction of home and family, and getting everything in order in this department. Others are hanging on your words this month, and stimulating conversations about love and relationship figure strongly.

A flurry of activity can leave your head spinning at times and there are errands to run, calls and emails to make, and paperwork to sort out. Do your best to tend to these matters in an orderly fashion, making lists and following them, or you could put yourself through unnecessary stress. You have the ability to find extra sources of income this month

The need to sort out your finances becomes apparent. Events, such as the need to fulfill financial obligations, occur now that push you in that direction. Some drama regarding shared finances with a partner, loans, or taxes is likely this month. Others are following your lead, and this is especially true of love interests and friends, and your charm knows no bounds. Take advantage of this exciting energy!

This month brings many surprises and personal revelations to your life. Tests, illuminations, and dramas with a partner occur which set the stage for a strong need to revamp your approach to life. Issues surrounding personal appearance, the body, and your image become especially important now.

A friendly, sociable, and spiritual month is in your forecast and it’s a strong time for recreating yourself and your goals. Circumstances insist you rid yourself of guilt about under-performing, and to develop faith and trust in a larger more spiritual plan. Do what you can to get yourself involved with others, through club and other social events, because these are the settings in which your personal magnetism is the strongest now.

Finding a better position for yourself professionally speaking will be easier than usual this month. Others are recognizing your charm and determination, and your ability to communicate with ease only sweetens the pot. Your social agenda is busy as well, as you find that you’re not only in demand on the job, you’re also generating great interest amongst friends.

Your career is a big focus this month and the chance for a new start professionally speaking occurs. While it means a change of position for some, for many of you it’s about new commitments. There are urgent demands from home and family. These events serve as a reminder of personal responsibilities on the home front, as you’ve been paying a lot of attention to your public and professional life.

Events bring up the issues of freedom and mobility for you. You are feeling restless and restrained, and the need to put some spice and adventure into your life is strong. Intimate matters are heating up this month, keeping a romance interesting, but avoid reading between the lines too much.

Focus is on a partner and relationships in general. There are plenty of negotiations and compromises to make. Love is spicy, stimulating, and challenging, but ultimately satisfying. Your personal plans might be on hold for now as you tend to others’ needs. An important money matter comes to a head prompting you to take more control over your finances.

This promises to be an eye-opening month for you with partnerships a big theme. New beginnings in relationships are in the works and your emotions are heightened and a personal revelation occurs that might surprise you. Work is especially stimulating and offers you a wonderful social life.

Heightened romantic feelings and playful impulses are themes for you. It’s a strong period for taking a small vacation that allows you to rest, relax, recoup, and enjoy yourself. A vacation that is too ambitious or exotic might only serve to stress you out. It is a time to adapt and attract rather than initiate new projects or endeavors.

Big changes in your love life, with friends, and in your job are in the works for you in the next few months. Events will give you a sense of what needs to be done. Tests in these areas of your life are likely now, and pave the way for new beginnings to come. You´re more playful, creative, and romantic impulses are stimulated now, making it a good time for a vacation.

Not that long ago, the idea of having your own swimming pool in your garden or home was just a dream, a luxury only had by the rich and famous. Invest in a swimming pool and/or Hot Tub giving you a constant source of leisure and pleasure right on your doorstep. A pool is an investment; it will increase the value of your home considerably. Swimming is one of the most popular sports and one of the healthiest forms of exercise. So your investment will help you grow healthy. Selecting a pool to suit your needs can be a difficult and

daunting process so make sure you choose a reputable swimming pool construction company.

Swim Spas can facilitate an environment that will allow a person to exercise continuously, relax by just soaking in the warm water to sooth the mind and body, or spend time with family/friends in the comfort of your home. According to the American Heart Association, just 30-60 minutes of physical activity 3-4 days per week can help reduce your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. As a regular physical activity, swimming can also help

lower your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Hot Tubs/Jacuzzi’s are based on Hydrotherapy and is the combination of water, heat, and air to treat health conditions. Water makes us buoyant, reducing body weight by 90%. This greatly eases stress on the body's muscles and joints. The air propelled through the jets relaxes muscles and alleviates pressure on

nerves. Hydrotherapeutic massage therapy also boosts circulation and accelerates the body's natural healing process. It eases the symptoms of arthritis, lessens chronic pain, and promotes a restful sleep.

Facts; Submersion in warm water causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow to body tissues. Warm water jets stimulate your muscles while you relax. Water buoyancy takes pressure off stressed

joints. Controls joint inflammation and pain associated with Arthritis.

Relieves headaches caused by muscular tension. Recover

quickly from the stress and strain of exercise.

Hot tubs are great for all the family. Kids love the fun of the water and adults can relax and socialise. They offer a great way to get everyone together regularly, away from the distractions of modern life. You may spend longer in it than you think!

NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE OR SUPPLIES?Swimming Pool MaintenanceSwimming pools are open water systems and are constantly influenced by rain, wind and sunshine as well as swimmers using the pool. All pools benefit from professional maintenance and products.

Your pool needs a regular MOT, supply of products and a regular comprehensive weekly, fortnightly or monthly servicing.Swimming pool treatment chemicals are for use in hot tubs, spas & swimming pools. You can use standard pool cleaning equipment and automated pool cleaners such as robots, vacuums & other outdoor pool cleaners. Automatic swimming pool cleaning equipment makes your life easier by saving you time and effort.

22 Sunshine Magazine www.sunnynumbers.com

Here are 6 basic steps to maintain your pool on a weekly basis.

1.Completely backwash filter

2.Test water for Chlorine, pH and Alkalinity.

3.Adjust pH and Alkalinity as needed. 4.Add Chlorine to pool.

5.Vacuum pool floor and walls if needed.

6.Check and adjust water level as needed. Water should be half way up the skimmers. Recommended Hot Tub Care Maintenance Routine

Daily : Check sanitiser level & dose as required Check pH level & dose as required Clean water line with Waterline Cleaning Paste

Weekly : Oxidise hot tub with Non Chlorine Shock Add Spa Sparkle to help obtain beautifully sparkling water Add No Foam to control foaming If in area of high calcium hardness add No Scale to prevent scale deposits Monthly : Clean filter cartridge using Cartridge Cleaner Take water sample to check water balance

Periodically : Due to the build up of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) the hot tub will need completely draining & refilling.

Pool CoversAutomatic & manual covers on swimming pools help you to conserve energy by keeping the heat in, the dirt out

and reduced water consumption due to evaporation. They are often made of strong durable materials which can take the weight of a human being. Pool covers can be sited above ground at the end of the pool or in a pit under the pool surrounds at one end out of site, or even in the pool floor. An average 50,000 litre pool can lose up to one and a half

times its capacity in evaporation alone. Some pool covers, cuts salt and chemical use by up to 50%. When chlorine is added to the pool water or produced by a salt water chlorinator, it eventually returns to its natural state as a gas and escapes. However, when a pool cover is in use the gas cannot disperse into the atmosphere. The chlorine gas is trapped below the cover.

Why BBQ?In short, fun, friends and hearty food.

Barbecuing is about delicious steaks or home-made burgers, fresh fish and colourful vegetables, and the sizzle and hiss of cooking in the background, merging with the bubble of conversation. It is the one time that you can excuse blackened food and for once, taste rather than perfect presentation is the key.

A barbecue can start early in the afternoon and stretch lazily into the evening. The smell of someone else´s barbecue on a warm summer evening is all the incentive you should need!

Basic barbecuing in 10 easy steps1:Choose your type of barbecuePortable - Disposable - Brazier - Gas/Electric - Kettle - Permanent/Custom Built. 2 Choose your fuelLumpwood Charcoal - Charcoal Briquettes - Self-igniting Charcoal - Hardwoods - Gas/Electric.

3. Get your tools sortedRemember oven gloves and tongs to turn things over.

4. Pick your spotIf you are not using a fixed bbq then be sure to choose a spot that is stable and on a flat surface. Don´t move the bbq once it is lit.

5. PreparationUse foil to line the base of your bbq underneath the fire grate. This will make cleaning easier and will keep the bottom of the bbq hot.

6: Set up your fuelSpread a layer of fuel on to the fire grate: small pieces at the bottom and medium sized pieces on top of them works best. The layer of charcoal or wood should be 5cm deep and resemble a pyramid in the centre of the grate.

7. Light the barbecueIf using firelighter cubes, place one or

Beef Satay1 kg rump steak1 tbsp clear honey2 tbsp dark soy sauce2 tbsp groundnut oil1garlicclove,finelychopped1 tsb ground coriander1 tsp caraway seedsPinch of chilli powder. To garnishLime wedges

Serves 6 Preparation time: 10 minutes + 2 hrs marinatingCooking Time: 5-8 minutes

The term “satay” refers to a kebab that has been marinated in a flavour-some mixture of any kind and is not just a reference to a peanut sauce.

1. Using a sharp knife, cut the steak into 2.5cm cubes, then place in a large, shallow, non-metallic dish. Mix the honey, soy sauce, oil, garlic, coriander, caraway seeds and chilli powder together in a small jug. Pour the mixture over the steak and stir until the steak is thoroughly coated with the marinade. Coverwithclingfilmandleavetomarinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours, turning occasionally.2. Preheat the bbq. Soak wooden skewers in water. Drain the steak, reserving the marinade. Thread the steak on to several wooden skewers.3. Cook the steak over hot coals, turning and brushing frequently with the reserved marinade, for 5-8 minutes. Transfer to a large serving plate, garnish with lime wedges and serve

www.sunnynumbers.com Sunshine Magazine 27

two in the centre of the pyramid. If using liquid firelighter, pour a few tablespoons in the fuel and leave for a minute. NEVER use petrol. Light the bbq using a long match or taper and leave for 15 mins. Remember to light your bbq at least 1 hour before you want to start cooking - if not using gas or electric!

8. Raising the temperature.Spread the coals into an even layer and leave for 40 mins, or until they are covered with a thin layer of grey ash and are hot enough to begin cooking. Spread the hot coals at least 2.5cm further than the area on which you will be cooking the food.

9. Controlling the barbecueTo control the heat of the bbq for cooking, raise or lower the grill rack. If your bbq has air vents open these to raise the temperature of the bbq and

close them to lower it. You can also push the hot coals carefully into the centre of the bbq to provide a higher heat in the middle and lower heat nearer the edges.

10. Cooking the foodAlways make sure that the food is thoroughly cooked through. The bbq needs to be very hot before you start cooking. Do not overcrowd food on the bbq rack as individual pieces of food will not cook properly. Do not mix meat, vegetables and fish on the same rack. When cooking meat, turn steaks and burgers once, turn kebabs and sausages frequently. Brush the rack with a little sunflower oil (but not too much) to stop meat sticking.

BBQ´s can be purchased locally from most DIY stores, garden centres and specialised shops and don´t forget the summer sales started on July 7th!!!

british grand prixRed Bull’s Sebastian Vettel’s third career win waslargelysimilartohisfirsttwo:hestartedfrom pole position, led for the majority of the race and was never seriously challenged.

He pulled clear from the start and delivered a perfectly judged drive to dominate the race at Silverstone.

The 21-year-old came in ahead of Red Bull teammate Mark Webber and Rubens Barrichello of Brawn GP. The victory was Vettel’ssecondthisseason, andhisfirstonadry circuit.

“Thank you very much guys, this is a dream coming true. We’ve won the British Grand Prix,” he said over the team radio after taking thecheckeredflag.

After all the political chicanery over the past three days, the race was a more predictable affair with a huge crowd and a paddock packed with celebrities, who were treated to a demonstration drive by Vettel.

Button maintains leadButton, who leads the championship, started sixth, but fell to ninth after the opening lap. He worked himself back into the points and then made up two places at his second pitstop, when he switched back to softer tires. His Brawn struggled with its obligatory stint on the harder rubber compound, with the Briton unable to get enough heat into the tires.

In the end, Button managed a disappointing sixth place, his overall advantage trimmed to 23 points over Rubens Barichello.

But despite the setback, Button maintains his comfortable lead in the driver’s standings with 64 points from eight races, followed by Barichello on 41 and with Vettel a distant third, on 39 points.

Felipe Massa of Ferrari came in fourth, ahead of German Nico Rosberg for Williams-Toyota, Jenson Button in sixth, was followed by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and German Timo Glock for Toyota.

Dog Death Camp

We are desperately looking for donations to pay for a lawyer (MMB Solicitors in the Puerto de Mazarrón) to act in the case of shocking animal cruelty.

This cruelty has gone on now since 2007. The woman in question, approximately 1 year ago, had 40 dogs removed from her property by the police and was ordered to keep no more than 4 in the future (we cannot understand how she can be allowed to keep any animal)

The 40 dogs in question were eating each other to stay alive and lived in horrific conditions, many dogs died at this place, were then buried only to be dug up again and eaten. The cruelty goes on and on.

The woman started collecting dogs again shortly after being told by the court she could only keep 4 dogs.

Today there are 10+ and without doubt more will arrive any day. They have now started building pens for what we think will be horses.

There is 1 dog in particular that is causing us great distress; we only hope that he can stay alive until the case comes to court in Totana in the near future.

If you require more information, the web site is www.animalcrueltynearpolarisworld.com where you can make a donation by Paypal or call 968 431 265 or 968 431 590

We have chosen not to publish the horrendous photos of the dogs in question as this might prove too distrubing. Should you wish to see for yourself please visit the website. This georgous puppy is fortunately, not one of the dogs in this story.

You may think you know what ultraviolet does, but do you know the difference between UVA and UVB, or that applying one sunscreen over another could provide less protection, not more? Why do we need protection from UV rays? All experts agree that everyone needs some sunshine - the rays trigger the production of Vitamin D, essential for absorption of calcium from food and may even protect us from some cancers. Those rays are ultraviolet (UV) - an invisible form of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. Our lifestyles mean we are more vulnerable to UV rays than ever. The majority of the most harmful rays, known as UVB and UVC, are prevented from reaching the surface of the Earth by the ozone layer, though some UVB rays and plenty of UVA get through. UVA rays cause tanning by stimulating cells to produce more of the skin’s natural pigment, melanin, but they can also cause wrinkles and ageing of the skin by contributing to the breakdown of elastin and collagen, proteins in the tissue that are elastic and allow skin tissues to resume their shape after stretching. Meanwhile, UVB radiation causes the skin to burn and, in the long term, exposure to both forms can damage cells and lead to skin cancer, which is at an all-time high, according to Cancer Research statistics. Cases of malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, have doubled in the past 20 years, and one in five of those diagnosed will die. However, experts argue that the increase has less to do with depletion in the ozone layer, which filters out the most harmful UV rays, and more to do with lifestyle changes.

Compared with previous generations, changing wealth, fashion and holiday habits mean our total exposure to UV is much higher.

‘Rather than going to Blackpool for a week, people go to sunnier places abroad, which means a huge increase in their total exposure to UV’ s. They also go more often, and take winter sun holidays. Changes in fashion also mean that we have more exposed skin today than in past generations.’

guide for consumers on the effectiveness of sunscreens. SPF is, in fact, the measurement of the time it takes human skin to burn when exposed to UV rays. Sunscreens are then created in differing strengths by multiplying the minimum amount of time it takes for skin to burn to calculate an SPF based on the predicted time in the sun. ‘If the burn time is 12 minutes, a factor 10 would allow someone to be in the sun for 120 minutes before burning.’ This equation is what allows manufacturers to offer sunscreens in varying strengths - 10, 15, 20, 30 or 50 - and enables consumers to choose an SPF screen according to how long they plan to spend in the sun. It is also important to reapply the sunscreen every two to three hours and more frequently if doing activities where the SPF will rub off or wash away.’ SPF is only a measure of UVB protection but UVA rays can also cause skin cancer. Increasingly many manufacturers offer ‘broad-spectrum’ sunscreens that give protection against both UVA and UVB. ‘UVA is very important with regard to skin ageing and cancer too,’ says Sencan Tokgoz. ‘It’s best to have UVA and UVB protection in one cream.’

Labelling for UVA protection is less established than for SPF. In 1992, Boots introduced its ‘star system’ which outlines UVA content of sunscreen. A rating of up to five stars appears alongside the SPF rating. ‘We recommend using a cream with SPF 15 and a four-star rating, which gives a decent balance between price and protection,’ says Ed Yong, of Cancer Research. According to new EU guidelines, an additional UVA labelling regime of low, medium, high and very high protection is being used alongside traditional SPF ratings to provide guidance for the choice of the

appropriate sunscreen product. These guidelines have also banned the use of phrases including ‘sunblock’ and ‘100 per cent protection’. ‘No sunscreen products can provide full protection against UV radiation,’ Yong adds. ‘The only way to protect yourself fully is to completely cover the skin.’ ‘broad-spectrum’ sunscreens that give protection against both UVA and UVB. ‘UVA is very important with regard to skin ageing and cancer too. It’s best to have UVA and UVB protection in one cream.’ Labelling for UVA protection is less established than for SPF. How much sunscreen should we use? Cancer Research advises that SPF treatments will achieve their full effectiveness only when applied to the skin in a quantity of 36 grams - roughly two teaspoons applied generously and evenly to the head and neck, and two tablespoons for the body. This complies with EU guidelines. To get the amount of protection offered by a particular SPF, it needs to be applied generously. Most of us apply too light a layer.’ The common practice of doubling up sunscreens - adding, say, an SPF 10 to an SPF 15 in the hope of creating SPF 25 - is ineffective, say experts. One will rub off the other.

Eyes need protection from UV rays too! Conditions related to UV damage in the eyes include cataracts, pterygium - an abnormal but usually noncancerous growth on the edge of the eye surface - and age-related macular degeneration, which is a key cause of irreversible vision loss. The risk of UV damage can occur not only as a result of direct sunshine, but also from light being reflected from surfaces including sand, snow, water and even concrete. Intense UV light can cause pain and temporary loss of vision. This means it is important to choose sunglasses which filter out UV rays beneath 400 nanometers, which are the most dangerous UV rays with the highest energy. Most opticians will be able to advise you on your options even if you wear prescription glasses. Take care if buying cheap glasses ie :from the local market, as these have very little protection causing more UV rays to enter your eyes and cause damage to the cornea, critaline and retina.

Do children need sunglasses? Very young children should not be exposed to bright sunshine at all. Parents should consider giving sunglasses to children aged from two years. Why the right clothes are first line of defence. It is possible to become suntanned through glass and you can also become tanned and even sunburnt while wearing clothes, though the amount of tanning or burning depends on both the weight and colour of textiles being worn. There is now an international standard known as UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) in place to determine the UVA and UVB-blocking capability of textiles. Manufacturers of swimwear increasingly offer UPF swimsuits, hats and beachwear, in particular for children, whose skin is more sensitive.

The new Fiat 500 C will go on sale July 2, but have you met the recent, original Fiat 500 show car dedicated to the most famous fashion doll ever: Barbie®? This exceptional vehicle, created by a partnership between the Fiat Centro Stile and Mattel, was given officially to Barbie® at her fiftieth birthday celebrations in Milan earlier this year.

It’s a fashionista car but quite tongue-in-cheek and with lots of charm: just like Barbie® herself. The gleaming paintwork resembles varnish and definitely makes for a shock effect, achieved with deep lacquered colour using ultra fine aluminium plunged in deep, up-to-the-minute pink. The seating is upholstered in strikingly soft fabrics: silver laminated Alcantara® is not only trendy but plush to the touch and its glimmer bounces as far as the roof panel. Then there are mats enhanced with natural silk yarn and sleek viscose, not to mention lip glosses in brilliant colours stored in the glove compartment, plus a LED-decked vanity mirror to ensure perfect application. And there’s more. The car has more features than a crown has jewels! Crystals sparkle on interior bezels, hubcaps, outer window mouldings and antenna and even outline the doll’s famed silhouette on the pillars. Lastly, this Fiat 500 show car also has its own glossy cover, featuring the distinctive Sixties version of the Fiat 500 and a Barbie® autograph.

The latest Fiat 500 show appeared in public for the first time on Monday 9 March, when it raced through the quintessential streets of Milan’s fashion district. Barbie® was aboard and she had her own special driver: Ken, of course. On arriving at the entrance to La Rinascente department store, in Piazza Duomo, Barbie® left the car and walked the unique pink carpet created just for her. The band Nena was playing live in the background, reviving some of the most famous pop songs from the fifty years of the legendary fashion doll’s existence.

A Fiat 500 Show Car Birthday Gift For Barbie

www.sunnynumbers.com Sunshine Magazine 53

Roberto Giolito, creator of the Fiat 500, had this to say about the Mattel-Fiat partnership scheme: “All-American Ms Barbie® already has a number of ‘transport solutions’ available, like thundering GTs and motor homes with endless accessories. So if she’s spotted a 500 and wants one as a gift for this landmark birthday, it’s a signal typical of modern times that there’s a renewed need for dreaming the simple things in life, which give so much, allow us to lighten up, thrill who’s born beautiful or just feels beautiful, but doesn’t have to prove anything. After all, Barbie®

already has everything. Sleek Barbie® is a looker, smart enough to listen to everyone, a universal ambassador opting for a car that never divides but frees everyone from having to declare their social status. The new 2009 version celebrates her birthday with a model that offers a better view of the sun and the stars, all the better for continuing to dream, especially daydreams.”
