WELL ….. hullo again and we’re off! 2014 has arrived with a whirlwind of activity and alles! Such fun! (Apologies to Miranda.) Ja ‘strues bob we actually started during the holidays with Mrs Light taking the prefects out to the Kap River Nature Reserve for a strenuous three days where they had gedoente after gedoente and studied all types of leadership styles and also had to do quite a bit of introspection. Now that’s not “such fun”. (Sorry Miranda) Mr Pearson and I took our wives out to a braai where the prefects hosted us – and even acted as chefs, cooking our food and alles! What a pleasure to see all the parents there. It turned out to be a wonderful evening. Mrs Light is looking into extending the programme to 4 days next year.Welcome

…. to Mrs van Heerden who has taken over the Afrikaans classes from Mrs Steyn now residing in Pretoria. Also to Mrs Elliott who has taken over Accounting from Mrs Griesel …. and to MrRichards who comes to us from Woodridge and takes over from Mrs Price. What has impressed me most about the trio is that they are clearly born to teach and they love what they do.

Welcome too, to all our new pupils. The Grade 8’s have just finished their Orientation Week.

They were “sold” to the highest bidder and the monies collected will go to a good cause. The week ended at the swimming pool where their “owners” entertained them by braaing their food and everyone danced to (loud – very

loud) music at the pool ensovoorts. Must say that watching these kids dance never ceases to amaze me. If you think that God moves in mysterious ways, you must see these kids dance!Swimming

Like I said, school started long before the 16th. The swimming “Super Squad” trained through the holidays and attended their first A League meet in Uitenhage on the 11th of January. “A League” is what it suggests and comprises all the swimmers who represent and are trained by clubs and not their schools – except for Port Alfred. What a pleasure then to have Tiaan Labuschagne and Luke Lemmer go in at the deep end (sorry, couldn’t resist it) and find that they are ranked within the top 10 of the province. Luke is ranked 7th and Tiaan 8th. They were both very nervous about the step up and can definitely go faster.

So watch this space! Oh yes. “What club do they swim for?” I hear you say. The local one that has been started up by Annette Crous at the indoor pool: The Albany Aquatics Club.

Two of our swimmers completed the Kowie River Mile in December. It was their first time and it’s quite a milestone for both Lisa v d Berg and Danyel Keet.

GolfAlso in the holidays …. Meekah de

Sousa and Jarryd Harty took part in the Eastern Province Junior Golf League and they put up some good performances. At the Port Elizabeth leg of the league, Jarryd Harty ended 10th and Meekah de Sousa 2nd. At the St Francis Links Jarryd ended 2nd and Meekah 4th.

UCSA CampComing up this weekend is the United

Christian Students Association Camp (Grades 8 to 12) being organized by Mrs Prinsloo. This year they are going off to Mansfield Game reserve where they are assured of a lot of fun and spiritual renewal. The cost is a mere R130 (ten dollars) so stop being stingy and get your child to sign up with Mrs Prinsloo.

Campus…. and have you seen the new-look

swimming pool? Round Table got stuck in there over the holidays (Riaan Labuschagne in particular) and the pool surroundings have been resurfaced and the change rooms upgraded and we await our new starting blocks. Thanks Round Table!

…. and have you seen the paths, grass ‘n goed that has been laid at the back of the school, also over the holidays. What a difference to the eyesore that has been there for the last few years – since the floods in fact.

Matric Intervention MeetingThe moms and dads of our Grade 12s

met with their teachers last night and in short, everyone was told what to expect this year. It is different from others and determines the matric’s future. For one thing, they don’t have a year left. They have roughly 2 and ¾ terms left, when you take all the exams out of the picture. This weekend, the cricketers are at home and in P E. The swimmers are in Uitenhage for a B League gala.

From all of us at the school, have a good one!

Pricing Your HomeWONDERING what price you’ll get for your current home? When pricing your home, we’ll recommend a marketing price, which is established by doing a Comparative Market Analysis of similar homes sold recently in your area. To get the best selling price, you will also need to pay attention to the preparation of your house and ensure your house is appealing and well-presented within its price bracket before the sale.  Get in touch with us today to learn more.Every Property Has More Than One Price:

• What you (the seller) think it’s worth.

• What the agent values it at: The Comparative Market Analysis.

• What the buyer is prepared to offer.• The final settlement price.

House Pricing Guidelines:

• What you paid for your home has nothing to do with its present value.

• The price you would like to get for your home doesn’t control the asking price.

• The value other agents put on your property is not always accurate.

• What a valuator says your home is worth doesn’t determine the price in the market.

• The current market determines the value of your property.

Reasons to be Wary of Over Valuation:• It loses prospective buyers and

eliminates offers.• It reduces the agent’s efforts and

enthusiasm.• It limits financing and can

eventually lead to a lower price.

Construction sector could boost province’s performance in 2014

ONE pointer to the emergence of a new ma-jor player in the economy is the growth in the construction industry where employment in the first nine months of last year, grew at a faster rate than in any other province. That trend is set to continue.

In the west of the province, for example, the number of people employed on the con-struction of the Baywest City Mall will in-crease from the current 600 to 2 000 by the middle of the year, while the various projects connected to the expansion of the Port of Ngqura will create more than 2 000 jobs in this sector.

In Buffalo City, construction is expected to start on the multi-model OEM in the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) that will create 1 300 direct jobs.

To the north east of the province, the im-mediate financial problems facing Elitheni Coal have been resolved and the company is now looking to secure long-term financing, possibly from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). This will allow for the re-sumption of production at the mine and the creation of a significant number of both di-rect and indirect jobs.

Investment in the province’s three ports will be significant. Total investment in the 2014/15 financial year will be R1.55 billion spread across the three ports, with R267.5 million being spent in East London, R376.3 million in Port Elizabeth and R909.2 million at Ngqura.

Water and Environmental Affairs Minis-

ter Edna Molewa provided timetables for the construction of the Umzimvubu hydro-electric and irrigation scheme when she addressed the Integrated Wild Coast Devel-opment Programme Summit in November, stating that the clearing of the catchment area would start in April this year.

It also appears possible that work could start on the Wild Coast Highway with the le-gal challenges close to being resolved. Dur-ing the construction phase of the Wild Coast Highway 6 800 direct jobs will be created and 28 100 indirect employment opportuni-ties.

This year will also see the completion of the feasibility study for Project Mthombo, the oil refinery planned for the Coega IDZ and a decision will then be taken on whether to proceed with the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) stage which involves the de-tailed design.

While the revised Integrated Resource Plan released by the Department of Energy states that any decision on the construction of Nuclear 1 at Thyspunt is likely to be de-layed, the focus will be on the exploration of shale gas and what is described as the “Big Gas” scenario. And that holds enormous prospects for the Eastern Cape.

The overall picture is positive and finally the Eastern Cape appears poised to shed its Cinderella status.

Green Light for Ndlambe Go Kart Challenge

STAFF REPORTER

In last week’s council meeting Ndlambe Municipality approved the return of the popular go kart’s street race. The race will take place on the weekend of the 25th and 26th of October 2014 and will form part of the Kowie River Festival and Port Al-fred’s 125th year celebrations.

“I am very excited about the return of the race, it is a wonderful opportunity to put our town on display both nationally and internationally,” the event coordina-tion manager, and owner of Qcard Televi-sion, Darryl Kukard, said. He added that

the race will be filmed and broadcast on national television. The event will be a challenge between two rival clubs, Algoa Go Kart Club and Border Go Kart Club.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to get nation televi-sion coverage at reasonable rates and for tourism in general, we will soon be offer-ing a variety advertising packages that will include the print media” Kukard said.

The Sunshine Escape is delighted to be the sole print media sponsor for the “Ndlambe Go Kart Challenge” and will continue to keep our readers updated on the progress of the event.

2014 could be the year when the Eastern Cape finally shrugs off the tag of being a minor contributor to the national economy and exporter of human capital and starts to become a significant player. And it could, too, be the year in which the unequal development between the west and east of the province and the unemployment and poverty that are the legacy of the former homelands finally starts to be addressed.

Fabulous February – The Month of LoveAS February is Valen-tine’s month what bet-ter way to spruce up your home than to add a touch of romantic glam-our to it.

Valentine’s day was first associated with ro-mantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. It evolved into an occa-sion in which lovers ex-pressed their affections for each other by giving gifts in 18th century England.

Transform your home into a romantic haven as they did in the 18th cen-tury – with plush décor and opulent grandeur.

Start where all great love stories truly be-gin… In the bedroom...

Add that unique glam-our to your home by purchasing a beautiful chaise lounge covered in a gorgeous French Toile fabric. A Victorian chair or two will cer-tainly go a long way to soften your boudoir.

To celebrate Valen-tine’s month, we have decided to hold a 15% sale on all beds and lounge suites. Hopefully this will be the month that allows you more time in your bed… Or on your lounge suite…

Let February be the month of candles, flow-ers and beautiful dé-cor items, a whimsical time of romance and soft glamour, harkening back to an era long past and resurrecting the finest moments.

DÉCOR DELIGHTS AT SPARG’S ON THE WHARF

WE currently have beautiful adult dogs, puppies, kittens and one loving black female cat waiting to be adopted and taken to a forever home.

Adopting an animal from the SPCA or any Welfare Organisation saves lives. What are the pros and cons of adopting?

Pros: Although there is an adoption fee involved (see below), the animal(s) you are adopting is for free! The adoption fee includes spay or neuter of the animal (we all know what it cost to spay and neuter), membership fee for the year, first vaccination, dipping & de-worming, collar and an ID tag. The adopters are not charged for the time period the animals have spent at the kennels (this adds up to a substantial amount). But most important is that you are giving an animal a second chance in life. Cons: Losing your heart to a special pet that will bring you lots of joy and happiness for a very long time!

Please be advised that the proper adoption procedures must be fol-lowed before an adoption can take place, and animals will only then be allowed to go to their new homes if this process is successful. For any queries please phone the office and speak to Forbes or Lisa about the adoption procedure.

A group of keen conservations from the Child Welfare Aftercare Education Centre in Klipfontein volunteered their time in order to help the Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) participate in a Citizen Research Survey of the sensi-tive inter-tidal zone at Kwaaihoek last Saturday. The children elected to offer their time in order to earn Kariega Credits from Kariega Project. The credits will be put towards keeping the Aftercare Education Centre, a valuable and vital community service, open for another month. The keen conservationists are seen here with Meghan Rousseau, the current Marine Biologist intern at SST (on the left) and Sean Kelly from Kariega Project on the right. The children were issued with cameras and clipboards and recorded the variety of marine life – plants and animals – found in the rock pools at low tide. While a little ‘camera-shy’ and unsure of just what there was to photograph, the experience was a real voyage of discovery for the youngsters who soon discovered nature’s splendour right on their doorstep – varieties of algae; nudibranch; anenomes; crabs; fish and more.

VALENTINE’S Day is next Friday and while some are busy dreaming up the perfect gift of love for their sweetheart – Flowers? Romantic dinner? Oh, what shall it be? - others wonder why we celebrate this day at all. Is there really anything more to it than commercialism and increased chocolate consumption? Perhaps you ponder the historical context - fortunately you can Google that.

But what if… what if just for this ONE year you viewed Valentine’s Day in a new light?

As PR Specialist and journalist, Alison Hope, suggests this special day serves to remind us that “Love is worth celebrating every day of the year” and that on this day we are encour-aged to “to shout from the rooftops how much we love our significant others, moms and dads, kids, friends, pets and, yes, ourselves”.

“Love is what turns the daily grind into a tol-erable, even enjoyable ride. Love is the bind-ing element that pulls us out of our selfish little egotistical bubbles and reminds us that life is worth living because of all that we get to share with those we love. Love makes meals taste better, illnesses hurt less and sunsets more brilliant.”

So go on be bold put a smile on Grandpa’s dial – take him out for breakfast or treat your friend to a cuppa tea and a fine slice of cake.

And why not spread love beyond the confines of your personal bub-ble and let this Valentine’s Day be the day when you finally pluck up the courage to pour some ‘heart’ into a cause or to volunteer at a community service organisation.

DANICA KUKARD

NEXT time you find yourself in Graha-mstown, make sure you make your way to Saint’s Bistro for a true dining out experience. Saint’s Bistro is situated at 131 High Street, which also happens to be one of Grahamstown’s oldest heritage sites. Kyle Bray and Michael Vincent are the new kids on the block who have started this venture, not only to wow the residents of Grahamstown, but also, they hope to attract visitors as far afield as Port Elizabeth. Bray, has always dreamed of becoming a chef. After completing school he went on to study at the International Hotel School for three years. At the young age of 27, Bray already has many accolades to his name. He has worked for the Ritz-Carlton, the Saxon Boutique Hotel as well as travelling Europe and working under some of the world’s top chefs. Bray has also helped open several res-taurants as well as consulting for res-taurants that are struggling to succeed, sort of like South Africa’s own version of Gordon Ramsay. Vincent’s culinary journey began at the age of 14, when

his parents told him that he needed to get a job. Working as a waiter for many restaurants in Cape Town, Vincent soon became accustomed to the restaurant lifestyle. He is well trained in silver ser-vice and is a charismatic front of house manager.

When asked why they opened the business Bray said, “I came down to Grahamstown for my sister’s 21st and saw that there was a gap in the market for a different kind of restaurant.” Bray and Vincent soon teamed up and the dynamic partnership has taken off at a fast pace. For a restaurant that has only been open for a few weeks, it is remark-able to see the progress that has taken place.

The food is excellent and well priced. Even poor students (like me) will be able to dine here and not break the bank. The menu offers a variety of foods from zesty salads and pastas to lamb burgers and chicken schnitzels. I ordered the Falkland calamari, and it was the most tender and tasty cala-mari I have ever eaten. There are three very different and unique options for dessert; Amarula Créme Brûlée’, Apple,

Pear and Lime Cheesecake and BarOne Bon- Bons, which are bite sized pieces of Bar One, rolled in phyllo pastry and then fried. And as far as presentation goes these dishes score a ten out of ten. All ingredients are locally sourced and every meal is made from scratch, even the side accompaniments like the cus-tard and dipping sauces.

There are already exciting plans for extending the business. Saint’s plans to start a delivery service which will be aimed at providing homemade meals to students at affordable prices, a retail section, which will sell pies and confec-tionary goods and a full bar upstairs. They have already set up a beer garden, which sells Port Alfred’s own craft beer “Kowie Gold” and Vincent has already begun training his staff on wine pair-ing.

Vincent summed up the ethos of their business in these words, “We are bring-ing the customers into our house and we want them to feel at home, it is not about taking their money, it is about including our customers in the experi-ence. Food is a journey and everyone that dines with us matters!”

FOLLOWING the fabulous success of the Kenton Game On! Touch Rugby featuring 22 teams at Kariega Beach in De-cember, the organizers have confirmed that we can expect more action in 2014. This is great news for all beach rugby fans. For those lucky enough to have watched this exciting series, players from both the Kings and Blue Bulls took part in the event. The series is a great asset to Kenton-on-Sea and would not have been possible without the 4 main sponsors, Pam Golding, Sunshine Coast Spar, Mega Build-It and Homewoods Restaurant. Twizza and Red Bull also came on board. Keep a look-out in the press and the Sunshine Coast Tourism events page for the next match.http://www.sunshinecoasttourism.co.za/events.htm

Port Alfred High School Sport on the upJARRYD PAULS

OVER the past few years Port Alfred High School (PAHS) has started to place increasing emphasis on the sporting field, and slowly but surely it is reaping the rewards. The school has excellent facilities in comparison to other schools in the area and dedicated coaching at all age levels in a number of sports for both boys and girls.

2014 is expected to be another year of growth for PAHS sport, and Head of Sport, Craig Rob-ertson, stressed that sport forms an important component of scholars’ lives.

“A holistic approach is important in educa-tion. At school one needs to grow in all facets, and sport gives learners an opportunity to dis-cover themselves and install a sense of pride and competitiveness that will assist them throughout life,” Robertson said.

Robertson believes that one of the most im-portant steps the school has taken was placing greater emphasis on sports from Grade 1 to Grade 7. It is hoped that this will create a feed-er system to the senior teams. This focus on development from a young age has been suc-

cessful at a number of leading schools around the country.

PAHS encourages participation by all learn-ers in at least one summer and one winter sport. There has also been an attempt to boost support at first team matches.

“It is compulsory for Grade 8s and 9s to at-tend all home winter derby days, and this has created a greater atmosphere at rugby, hockey and netball matches,” Robertson remarked, adding that this is important in establishing school spirit and a sense of unity.

There has already been an increase in cricket fixtures and PAHS is beginning to compete with some of the larger schools around the East-ern Cape on a regular basis. Senior cricketers have had games against Alexander Road High School, Westering High School and Graeme College to name a few, while the juniors have played against schools such as Gonubie Prima-ry School and Herbert Hurd.

Given Port Alfred High School’s consistently impressive academic results in recent years and the cultural opportunities available, it is clear that this is a school that learners, parents and the community can be proud of.

Absorbing Kingswood and St Andrew’s fixture ends in damp drawJARRYD PAULS

THE two-day fixture between the Kingswood College and St Andrew’s College 1st XI cricket teams at King-swood was played with a slightly tweaked format on Friday and Satur-day. A 5-wicket second innings was added for both teams, in a format used in the national cricket weeks.

Kingswood won the toss and opted

to bowl on a slow wicket, and soon had St Andrew’s in deep trouble at 74 for 5. However, a brilliant 104 by Anthony Dakin rescued the situation for St Andrew’s, as they managed to post a useful score of 231 all out. Josh Shelley was the pick of the King-swood bowlers, with impressive fig-ures of 4 for 54.

In reply Kingswood posted 252 in their first innings, with Daine Kruger

(68) and Marcus Lombard (74) hit-ting composed half-centuries. Grant Dixie took 3 for 53 for St Andrew’s.

With about 30 overs still left, the match was still fascinatingly poised as St Andrew’s moved to 2 without loss in their second innings. Unfor-tunately the weather did not play its part, as heavy rain forced the match to be cut short and the game ended in a draw.

Anthony Dakin scored a superb hundred against Kingswood
