TheThe SeniorSenior EducationEducation andand TrainingTraining (SET)(SET)PlanPlan

Ensuring every student in Year 10 is ontrack to succeed in the Senior Secondaryphase of learning involves providingmeaningful support for them to considertheir future: to reflect on their uniqueabilities and investigate options for further

education, training and employment.

After completing Year 10, your son / daughter will be able tochoose from a broader range of learning options leading to aQueensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and/ or a CertificateIII vocational qualification. In order to make the most of thisopportunity, they will need a plan.

The Senior Education Training Plan (SET P) is a key componentof each school’s career education program. Each student’sSET Plan maps out actions to put them on track for successin Senior Schooling, post-school education and work. For ourstudents to succeed, it is important in their SET planning that

they choose subjects and/or courses that interest them andcater to their abilities to have success.

All Year 10 students are preparing their SETP PPT with theirproposed selections. Please discuss these options with yourson / daughter.

SET Plan interviews are planned and booked in for Monday 31st

August, in the Resource Centre.

Year 10 students will only attend school at their scheduledappointment time on that day. Students are required to attendwith their parent/s. Booking times will be made available in theSOB’s booking platform (TBA).

Do you get a little frustrated asking yourson/daughter how their day was, and thengetting a ‘grunt’ for an answer?

As a parent or caregiver, you are yourchild’s first and most important teacher, and you play an integral role in supportingtheir education. Did you know that one themost accurate predictor of academic

achievement is the extent to which parent / guardiansencourage learning at home and involve themselves in theirchild’s education?

If you want to know more about how your child is doing atschool, I encourage you to ask them these 5 questions….

It is good to remember that you are not interviewing your child. On some days young people may have a lot to say, and onother days not so much. The important thing is keeping thelines of communication open, and being able to give them anopportunity to think about themselves as learners.

1. What did you learn today?

2. How did you do?

3. What did you do if you didn’t understand?

4. How can you improve on your learning?

5. What are you most proud of?

Term 3 has started off very smoothlyfor Senior Students and it’s great tosee them all jumping straight into theirstudies with good habits. After schooltutorials are continuing this term andit’s good to see many students alreadytaking advantage of this extra teachersupport.

Year 10

Semester 2 is a busy time for our Year 10s as they commencesenior prep subjects. This is a very important time as it givesstudents the experience with what is on offer in Year 11 and12. Also, students are involved in SETPlan, mock interviewsand work experience, giving them a taste of what life afterschool could look like. It is very important for students to bechecking emails regularly to ensure they are receiving all of thecorrect information for these events.

There is an abundance of support both within and outside ofschool for Year 10 students to understand the Senior system. This web link is a new platform specifically for Year 10students to help understand key information for seniorschooling.https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/guide-to-planning-qce-pathway.html

Year 11 and 12

This year to support students in the new senior system all Year11 and 12 students have a dedicated Study Skills lesson eachMonday and Wednesday. Unlike the old system, all studentswill be sitting an externally written exam. All General subjectshave an external exam in the Year 12 exam block, whileEssential English and Essential Maths classes will sit a‘Common Internal Assessment’; a 2 hour exam written byQCAA (not the school). These study lessons prepare studentsfor the demands of this assessment as well giving them agood understanding of the whole senior program. Allresources from these lessons are also available on the studentDigital Portfolio which students have access to 24/7 at homeand school.

Year 12 students can now access their confirmed results forthe first IA in General subjects via the QCAA Student Portaland learning account. These confirmed results are beingpublished progressively with most now available here. If thereare any questions about these results, please contact theschool.

Student Representative CouncilStudent Representative Council

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has been busy thisterm so far with the welcomed easing of social distancingrules. One of the great changes is having Junior and Seniorassemblies return. The assemblies are organised and run bythe SRC and is a way to share, recognise and celebrate ourstudent voice.

In week 2 the Senior School assembly welcomed DetectiveSergeant Grant Gleeson from Noosa Police to speak to ourstudents. Working in the Child Protection sector DetectiveGleeson spoke to students about being safe in our community. It was a great reminder about looking after yourself and thoseyou care for, and reinforced the great relationship our schoolhas with Noosa Police.

The Culture sub-committee of SRC led the month longcelebration of Pride Month at the end of term 2. Thisculminated in a free dress day to celebrate ‘being yourself’ andacceptance of all people in our community. This event alsoworked with the recognition of NAIDOC week which occurredin the second week of school holidays.

The Environment sub-committee has been getting their handsdirty this term! They have been working hard on restarting theveggie patch at B block so it can be used to grow products forcooking classes, canteen and a long term concept of ‘farmer’smarkets’ if there is enough produce. Donations of seedlingsare welcomed and can be dropped off at the main office forour Environment captain, Zoe.

Planet Ark’s National School Tree Planting Day is on July 31.The Environment sub-committee will be leading events at ourschool to contribute to a cleaner earth. The public events havebeen cancelled due to COVID so it’s even more important forschools to do their bit with tree planting. Do you know a 5%increase in tree cover can reduce nearby daytimetemperatures by 2.3c, which could be crucial as heatwavescost more lives than all other climate change impactscombined.

Two new programs are running for students. Last week, ArtTherapy – young women’s program, facilitated by a local ArtTherapist, began with students taking part in a six-weekprogram here at school. The opportunities for studentsparticipating are to gain insights and reflections to enhancetheir confidence and wellbeing. It has been encouraging seehow students within the program also build personal and socialconnections as they partake.

Zuu Training started on Wednesday for another group ofstudents who, under guidance of a personal trainer, undertooksome challenging body fitness routines. The damp weather didnot deter the spirit of the students as they sweated, puffedand worked together in proving how self-doubt can turn intoself-belief and pride.

The return to Term 3 within the Wellbeing and EngagementCentre has seen a continuation of our care and management ofstudents with the addition of two new staff faces.

Firstly, we welcome Odette Carter who has come to SunshineBeach State High from Caloundra SHS. Odette comes with awealth of experiences and knowledge and is already keepingherself busy in getting to know students and meeting parentsand staff. Odette works on a full-time basis from the Wellbeingand Engagement Centre. Her passions are her family, travellingand great food!

Secondly myself, Lisa Martoo, as Acting Head of Departmentfor Wellbeing and Engagement. This is a role in which I havea particular interest and joy, that being to enable young peopleto develop their strengths and character in both challengingand rewarding times. It is a privilege and one I look forward tosharing with parents, staff and community.

P & C NewsP & C News

The new P&C Committee was elected at the AGM in June. Wewould like to acknowledge the tremendous effort put in by theprevious committee over the past two years to build a strongand supportive community at our school.

A big thank you also to the new committee members whohave taken on the roles of VP (Amanda Avery), Treasurer (DebAlsopp) and Secretary (Viane Amato Ali). We’ve had a couple ofmeetings and I’m excited by the passion and ideas in the groupand look forward to working with them.

Cash for ContainersCash for Containers

It was a proud moment to be at the unveiling of our new Cashfor Containers trailer at the AGM and we have since had ourfirst collection day. We are now listed as a RegisteredRegistered CollectionCollectionPointPoint on the Containers for Change website, so please drop inall your eligible containers at any time! The trailer is convenientlyparked next to the fence near the Music Block with easy accessfrom the carpark. This is a great - and easy! - way for the P&Cto raise money with funds raised used to support a range ofinitiatives. Most recently, the P&C helped to fund the upgradeof eight existing water troughs to eight chilled water troughs atthe Hilton Amenities Block.

Second hand uniform salesSecond hand uniform sales

A big thank you to DJ and Deb Bickle for their hard work inrunning another successful second hand uniform sale. Theyhave created a well-oiled machine and it’s great to see so manypeople make use of the program. The next event is scheduledfor Thursday, 10 September. Please consider donating anyuniforms that are no longer needed in your home as it's avaluable resource for others.

School GardensSchool Gardens

I’ve been fortunate to have done a number of walks throughour school grounds with Bob Carey and made a commitmentto keep protecting and enhancing the remnant bushland in ourschool. When I passed by the school on Sunday afternoonthere were more than 10 birdwatchers keen to spot the GlossyBlack Cockatoos as they come down for their regular afternoondrink at around 4.30pm. We are so fortunate to live in thisbeautiful environment - let’s make the most of it!

Finally - thanksthanks toto allall ofof youyou, our parents and citizens, for beingan active part of our community.

Regards

Desiré Gralton

P&C President
