THE MINISTER’S LETTER

To the family of God that meets at Radford Road Church,

In the season after Pentecost I have been very mindful of the work of

the Spirit in our lives. I have been particularly conscious of this as I

have met and prayed for several people who need this ministry of the

Spirit to set them free. Free from guilt, from anger and from fear. In

Galatians chapter 5 the apostle Paul talks at length about the ministry

of the Spirit. In the opening verse he writes,

‘It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do

not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.’ – Galatians 5:1

It is not often we think of ourselves as being enslaved, but it is all too easy to get into a

mentality where we are not the master of our emotions, but are being irrationally driven by

them, reacting against others rather than ministering out of what God has given us to do,

or where we are reacting out of some perceived fear for the future, rather than trusting

tomorrows worries to the One who holds the future.

Some people worry about letting the Spirit of God into their lives because they fear what

God might do, but we shouldn’t be afraid. The Spirit doesn’t come to control us, but rather

to set us free. In fact, later on in Galatians 5 Paul tells us,

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.’ – Galatians 5:22-23

Self-control is a gift of the Spirit, whereas previously, addictions, strong emotions, and

fears may have held sway in our lives. The Spirit produces this fruit in our lives, I note

especially, ‘self-control’. The world often presents those who are powerful as being able

to do and have whatever they want in life, to live without restraint. But for Christians this

isn’t real power, ironically those who live like this are often most captive, for they are not

the master of their own desires but the servant of them.

For Christians true power is to be found in this ninth description of the fruit of the Spirit,

that of self-control. The ability to be master over one’s emotions and desires. To exercise

restraint, in this sense it may be related to having humility, a proper appreciation for

oneself in view of God’s grace and mercy, and the need to show that same grace and

mercy to others.

I pray this prayer for us all,

Lord Jesus, pour out your Spirit upon us, help us to surrender to its work in our lives, that

we might have a proper regard for ourselves and others, in the light of your holiness and

mercy to us. Nurture the fruit of your Spirit in our lives that we may live with self-control

and humility. To the praise of our Father in heaven. Amen.

With love in Christ Jesus,

James

Please do remember to pray for the Churches Together Civic Leaders’ breakfast at

Lillington Free Church on Saturday 21st September which is an opportunity to inform our

many new councillors about the work Churches are doing across our town through the

Night Shelter, the Way Ahead Project, Street Pastors, Food Banks, the Learning Centres,

and the many other local initiatives.

This charity is supported by Siloam Ministries. Our Mission project 2019/20 aims to

raise £1000 for this international charity and will be launched at the “Last Night of

the Proms” evening on September 14th when there will be an opportunity to learn

more of this work.

The local branch of this charity has asked for volunteers from Radford Road who

are able to help on a monthly basis between 10am and 4pm to insert leaflets into

envelopes ready for mailing to publicise their work.

The preparation of the envelopes is carried out in the hall behind the Life

Community Church in Charlotte Street.

Please phone 01926 335037 between Monday and Friday 10.00am to 6.00pm if

you can spare a few hours to help.

OUR COVER PICTURE:

CHURCH ACTION FOR TAX JUSTICE

Church Action for Tax Justice (CATJ) stands

for a fairer and more effective tax system, where

democratic governments set taxes to reflect the

common good, and individuals and corporations

pay their share.

CATJ was first launched in April last year by

the former Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Revd. Rowan Williams, the

Methodist President, the Revd. Michaela Youngson and Recording Clerk of the

Quakers, Paul Parker. In March this year it published its manifesto ‘Tax for the

Common Good’. It is currently supporting the build-up to Fair Tax Week, and

urging local churches to mark Tax Justice Sunday on 7th July.

CATJ has recently appointed Dr Justin Thacker to the post of National

Coordinator. Dr Thacker was, until Easter, the Academic Director at Cliff

College in Derbyshire, where he has served since early 2013. Prior to that he

was Head of Theology at the Evangelical Alliance and worked with Micah’s

Challenge. He initially trained as a doctor at the University of Edinburgh and

worked as a paediatrician in Kenya and in Northwick Park Hospital, north

London. He has edited and contributed to several books and in 2017 published

Global Poverty: A Theological Guide (SCM Press).

CATJ seeks to inspire all churches about the urgency of creating fairer and

more effective tax systems to fund healthier public services, both in the UK

and internationally.

Dr Rowan Williams, the Chair of the Christian Aid Board, commenting in

advance, said: “The creation of this new Church-wide movement is timely.

Many of the world’s largest companies seem to have forgotten that they have

moral duties, as well as legal ones. They must support human flourishing, not

least by paying their fair share of taxes in all the countries where they do

business - and being fully transparent about the relevant data.”

Ending financial secrecy in UK tax havens like the British Virgin Islands is one

of the reforms CATJ will pursue, along with changes to the way large

multinational companies are taxed. In addition, the new campaign will call on

churches themselves to make more vigorous and vocal use of their power as

investors in major companies.

God of all the nations, so many of your children are crying out to you

worn down by injustice and suffering.

Help us to fulfil our goal of helping to make real the vision

that Christ spoke of as ‘the kingdom of God’

where justice reigns. (Christian Aid Prayer)

MAINTENANCE OF PROPERTY REPORT

A recent leak in the boiler of the Hall Kitchen

necessitates the replacement of a valve.

The oven in the church kitchen is to be replaced.

The grounds surrounding the church have been swept

and tidied and rubbish has been removed.

The troughs which are filled with colourful flowers

throughout the year have recently been replanted with

petunias. These will give pleasure to people using our premises and to passers-by.

There will be another working party in the summer (July or August) to

complete the painting of the toilets in the church

paint the outside shed

and possibly paint the lower levels of the Church.

If you are able to help please let Bridget know.

Many thanks to the Property Committee for all their work in keeping our

premises in good order.

THE WALL OF ANSWERED PRAYER

In June 2017 we carried an article about a proposed Wall of Answered Prayer . It was envisaged that the wall, using a million bricks, would be a beacon of hope to

people, and provoke conversation around prayer. Each brick would tell a unique story of how Jesus has intervened in someone's life and answered their prayer. Since then things have moved on apace and now, after having a global design

competition, a design has been chosen and a site secured. The winning submission by Snug Architects features a Möbius strip, a surface which

seemingly has no beginning and no end and represents the project's message that Jesus answers prayer. It will be built at Coleshill Manor

on the outskirts of Birmingham between the M42, M6 & HS2 and will be completed in time

for Birmingham's 2022 Commonwealth Games. Visitors will be able to interact with the sculpture and read the prayers using their smart phones.

There will also be a Visitors’ Centre. The Wall Project CEO, Richard Gamble, says the structure has been designed as a legacy of the Christian faith and with the hope of inspiring the nation to pray.

He said, "The idea is that when people come to this monument they will be able to type in their circumstance or situation and find a story that is similar to what they

are going through and they'll be able to read how another Christian has coped with that situation, how they prayed, and how God has answered. "This country has a Christian heritage and we want to preserve it with all those

stories and answer prayers that have happened not only in this generation, but through the whole history of this country." Mr Gamble added: "It is time for the church in this country to be bold and I think

it's time for us to say what we believe." Names will not be displayed on the bricks. All the funding for The Wall will be from private investment. The project does not want to take any money from the

public purse. Some of this funding will come from major donors and some will be crowdfunded from individual donors. When someone sends in their answered

prayer there is an option to donate to the project if they so wish. James has a supply of forms on which answered prayers can be submitted. When The Wall is completed, all profits raised from its ongoing operation will fund

a million bricks worth of social housing. This will provide enough finance to build 100 houses for:

Social action charities

Council housing associations

International social housing charities

The Songs of Praise programme on July 7th will feature The Wall.

There will be an interview with Richard Gamble, the Wall Project CEO.

PRAYING TOGETHER IN JULY

The monthly Prayer Diary encourages the Church family to focus prayers on specific people or organisations on a daily basis

You are invited to take a pebble from the basket on the Table of Remembrance, sit or

stand quietly and concentrate on your particular concern. Then hold or stroke your pebble – feel your hurt, worry, loneliness, pain, guilt, unhappiness or anxiety flowing into your stone. Feel it warm in your hand. If you are praying for someone else, feel

your love and compassion flowing into your pebble. When you are ready, leave your pebble at the cross of Jesus. Leave it with your concerns, so that Jesus can deal with them. Then go – knowing that Jesus loves and

cares about you. There is also a Book of Prayer. Any situation entered in the book will be prayed for

at Friday Bible Study and included in the monthly Prayer Diary.
