RADFORD UNIVERSITY BASEBALL STADIUM

Radford University transformed its baseball program in April of 2011 by open-ing a brand-new stadium and making the first significant adjustment to its home park since opening in 1986. RU Baseball Stadium opened on April 8, 2011 when the Highlanders hosted VMI in the first game of a Big South series and changed the baseball experience in the New River Valley. A project unlike any before in the history of RU athletics, the stadium was completely privately funded through the Radford University Athletics Foundation, through the efforts of the RAC. It gives the program a stadium that is capable of hosting high-level competition, including the Big South Tournament. Using structural elements of the existing facility, a 700-seat grandstand was constructed on top. Spectators closer to the action than ever before, with the first row of red, chair-backed seats beginning three feet from the backstop. Sight lines in the grandstand are directed at the center of the field of play. A spacious

main concourse level is positioned at the top of the grandstand. In addition, a new pressbox and state-of-the-art sound system provided the finishing touches. For the first time ever, the Highlanders will have the capability to host night games. The stadium features lighting standards that meet the requirements of NCAA Regional Tournament host sites. In addition to the stadium, the actual grounds and dugouts saw a complete overhaul in the fall of 2009, setting the stage for the stadium improvements. One of the finest natural playing surfaces in the region, Carolina Green Corp. Athletic Field Construction was in charge of a project that included a new sod, a laser-graded surface of sand-based Tuckahoe bluegrass, and a new irrigation and drainage system underneath the field. New dugouts were also built to fit the changing needs of the program. Both dugouts are 74 feet long, include a deeper bench area with steps up to the field, restrooms, and expanded storage space on either side.

player development A place the Highlanders call home anytime and in any weather, the RU Baseball Indoor Facility includes three 90 foot batting cages, with the necessary equipment and amenities for live pitching, machine pitching, pitcher’s bullpens, and defensive drills. Located adjacent to campus, the indoor facility can serve the Radford baseball team and Joe Raccuia Base-ball Camps year-round, anytime the weather restricts outdoor practice or events. At 7200 square feet, indoor facility rivals the facilities of several top schools and conferences throughout the southeast region and across college baseball.

player development While so much of the focus for collegiate baseball players is geared on field, Rad-ford’s baseball program takes the time to develop well-rounded athletes and individuals. For the Highlanders, the fall season sets the stage for both the upcoming regular season, as well as a player’s committment to the off-field training and life skills neces-sary to becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. This fall, RadfordAthletics.com followed the team through key parts of the fall season: the Highlander Challenge and the team’s community service. The Highlander Challenge, which was completed for the fifth time under head coach Joe Raccuia, is a physical component of the offseason that involves strength, endur-ance and strategy, and is completely unique to the week-long period of the challenge. It’s brother-versus-brother, as the Highlanders are divided into two competing teams led by senior captains. Think you can push yourself to your physical limit? You’ll have to during the challenge. Along with the challenge, the Highlanders take on a yearly community service proj-ect. This year, they teamed up with a selected group of seventh graders at Dalton Middle School in Radford to impart leadership values. The ultimate goal was for the seventh grad-ers working with the Highlanders to serve as mentors to elementary school-aged children and prepare them for their next steps in school and life. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplish-ments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while inten-tionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership de-velopment of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kal-lander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision

as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearhead-ed the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s

and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin

play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High

Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference in-troduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more

than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

An alumnus on a mission... For Radford head baseball coach Joe Raccuia, the Highlander uniform is a comfortable, familiar fit. It’s also a winning fit. Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007, when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. Since coming back, Raccuia has continued a trend from his playing days: he’s been a part of 186 total wins as a player (1994-95), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 30 percent of the program’s all-time victories dating back to 1985. Included in those seasons are both of Radford’s 30-win campaigns: he was a team captain in 1995 when the Highlanders won 30 games and was the head coach leading RU to a school-record 31 wins in 2011. In each of his four years the Highlanders have improved on their win total, including the record-setting 2011 season and a 29-win campaign in 2010. Raccuia’s success has come both on and off the field of play, including facilities, player development, recruiting and academics. On his watch, two major baseball facilities have opened: the on-campus hitting facility and RU Baseball Stadium. The stadium, which opened on April 8, 2011, became the cornerstone of Radford’s program thanks in part to Raccuia’s extensive fund-raising and planning efforts. The project went from conception in the Fall of 2010, to completion during the 2011 season as a result of his work. Raccuia also spearheaded the work done to the playing surface and dugouts in time for the 2010 season. All of the improvements to the facilities marked the first major capi-tal upgrades since Raccuia’s playing days at RU. Many of his wins can be attributed to his work in player development: a nucleus of players that he inherited in the early stages of their careers helped the program turn the corner. Four of those players capped their careers in 2010: Reggie Keen, Tyren Rivers, Raphael Turner and Aerik Taylor. Keen went on to a pro career after a solid three years under Raccuia with a .354 career batting average, fourth all-time at Radford; Rivers became the school’s single-season and career stolen bases leader in Raccuia’s offensive system; Turner overcame injuries to post a team triple-crown season as a fifth-year senior; Taylor transferred in and assumed the role of ace starting pitcher in Rac-cuia’s second season. Alex Gregory and Eric Evans were part of the turnaround and flourished at the beginning of Raccuia’s stint at Radford: Gregory finished his career with back-to-back .400 seasons (2008-09) at the plate under Raccuia, while Evans anchored the pitching staff in 2008 with 14 starts and a 3.34 ERA. Gregory and Evans were both Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft picks. Raccuia’s recruits have been major contributors to Radford’s improvement and have made their marks in the school record books and in the conference annals. Eight of Raccuia’s recruits have matched or established new school records, including Abram Williams and his career and single-season saves marks, and Eddie Butler with his single-season victories record. In 2011, Butler became the first Radford player since former major leaguer Ryan Speier (2001) to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Jeff Kemp, a team captain in 2011, became the first Rad-ford player to earn Big South Freshman of the Year honors in 2009. Including a record six all-conference selections in 2011, 16 of Raccuia’s players have earned all-conference honors. In the classroom, Raccuia’s athletes have performed: through 2010, the Highlanders have 34 Big South Presi-dential Honor Roll selections since 2007-08. Radford’s athletic program has had the most student-athletes earn this honor in the conference over the last two years. In addition, Alex Gregory earned conference scholar athlete of the year honors in 2008 and Jason Patten was named a VaSID Academic All-State honoree. The upward trend continued for Raccuia’s Highlanders in 2011, earning a program-best 31 victories. Those victories included wins over major-conference opponents: the Highlanders beat Auburn (a preseason Top 25 team) in the series opener in Feburary, Wake Forest in March and local rival Virginia Tech later that month. In the first season with a new national standard for collegiate aluminum bats, the Highlanders never missed a beat offensively – they ranked in the nation’s top 40 in doubles and stolen bases, and finished third in the conference in slugging percentage and second in triples. In 2010 the Highlanders posted a third-place Big South finish for the first time since 2000, while becoming the first Radford team to hit better than .300 and post an ERA lower than 6.00 since 1995. The Highlanders put pressure on their opponents with a high-octane attack on the basepaths, stealing 143 bases as a team – a new single-season school record. The 2009 season, his second, marked a turnaround for the program when Radford went 26-24 overall and 16-9 in conference play. Radford’s season record was the fifth winning campaign in school history and its 16 conference wins were the program’s second-most all-time. Raccuia’s second season with the Highlanders was marked by a fourth-place finish and No. 4 seed in the Big South conference tournament (second time in program history) and a come-from-behind tournament win against No. 22 Coastal Carolina, 11-7, when the Highlanders trailed 7-6 and were down to their final strike before scoring five ninth-inning runs. In Raccuia’s first season with the Highlanders, the team produced 24 wins, the most since Radford won 26 in 2000. The final total was a 14-game turnaround from the 2007 season.

After working alongside Radford head coach Joe Raccuia at two different stops, Brian Anderson joined his coaching staff in July of 2007 and has played a key role in the revitalization of the Highlander program. Anderson’s duties include serving as the Highlanders’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, along with assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program, including practice, game-day preparation and scouting. Radford’s pitching staff has continued to improve under Anderson’s guidance – after the team’s ERA dropped by nearly a run upon his arrival in the 2008 season, Radford’s 2011 staff set school records, including the second-best ERA in program history. In his recruiting duties, Anderson has been the lead recruiter in helping the Highlanders land major contribu-tors to the success of the program. Since his arrival with Raccuia in 2008, seven recruits have earned all-confer-ence honors (including a program-record five in 2011) and six recruits have set or matched program records. Anderson developed the program’s pitching staff to feature a consistent rotation, reliable arms out of the bullpen and a shutdown closer in 2011 on the way to a program-record 31 victories. The three weekend starting pitchers, Eddie Butler, Mark Peterson and Bobby Bolling, became the first trio of starters in program history to post sub-4.25 ERAs, start 15 games each, work better than 85 innings each and strike out more than 55 batters each. Butler won nine games, matching the school’s single-season record, earned Second Team All-Big South honors and became the first Radford player to spend a summer in the Cape Cod League since former major leaguer Ryan Speier in 2001. The 2011 season also saw a breakout season from Abram Williams, a First Team All-Big South selection who completed the conversion from a starting pitcher in 2009, to one of the nation’s elite closers in 2011. Williams saved a program and Big South-record 17 games, more than half of the Highlanders’ victories. He was third in the nation in saves through the conclusion of the conference tournaments. Overall in 2011, the Highlanders shattered the program record with 364 strikeouts and ranked fourth in the Big South in ERA. It was the third consecutive season that Radford ranked in the circuit’s top four in ERA. As a result of Anderson’s work in 2010, Radford’s Friday-Saturday starting pitchers, Aerik Taylor and Butler, became just the second tandem of Highlander pitchers to work 85 or more innings in a season while making 14 or more starts. Both Taylor and Butler won six games. The 2010 staff exhibited control that ranked among the best nationally – Radford’s pitching staff was 38th in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings (3.15). Individu-ally, Bolling topped the staff with 1.48 walks per nine innings, 23rd fewest in the land. Bolling, Williams and Brad Wimmer, three of Radford’s six most-used arms, each walked fewer than 14 batters in 2010. Following up a 2008 where he pushed the Radford pitching staff to one of its top performances this decade, Anderson followed it up with more progress in 2009. The Highlander staff was highlighted by Taylor’s Second Team All-Big South honor in his first season as a full-time starter at the Division I level. Taylor led the Radford arms with seven quality starts; as a whole, the Highlanders produced 17 quality starts and the program’s fourth-best ERA since 2000. Anderson helped produce a pair of impact freshmen as well: left-handed starter Paul DeVito posted a 6-3 record and right-handed closer Jason Patten set a new single-season saves record. Anderson’s first year at Radford was marked by the emergence of left-hander Eric Evans as the ace of the Highlander staff, earning Second Team All-Big South honors in 2008. In his senior season, Evans went 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 starts, and 3-1 record and 1.88 ERA in Big South starts. Evans, a 23rd-round pick of the Rangers in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, continued his success in the professional ranks, going 3-2 with 36 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings between Rookie League and Class A.

Kyle Werman, a former George Mason assistant coach and standout player at Virginia, is in his second year as an assistant coach on Joe Raccuia’s staff at Radford. Werman, whose primary on-field assignments are working with Radford hitters and coaching third base, will assist in all aspects of the Highlander program, including recruiting and the team’s day-to-day operations. “Kyle’s offensive philosophy and knowledge of the game make him a great hire for Radford University,” head coach Joe Raccuia says. “We share a similar vision when it comes to the hit-and-run and putting pressure on other teams defensively, and he believes in what we’re doing as a program. In addition, he’s helped teams that he’s coached at George Mason and Virginia advance to Regional play.” In Werman’s first season at RU, the first season of new collegiate baseball aluminum bat standards, the Highlanders didn’t miss a beat offensively. They ranked in the nation’s top 40 in doubles and stolen bases, and finished third in the conference in slugging percentage and second in triples. Several hitters had breakout sea-sons, including First Team All-Big South selections Matt Hillsinger and Matt Mack. Hillsinger had a nearly 20-point jump in batting average from 2010 to 2011, while Mack improved nearly 40 points at the plate and ranked sixth in the conference in on-base percentage. Werman was also part of the development of second-year players Ryan Burgess and Cory Turner – Burgess was a second team all-conference selection that ranked in the league’s top 10 in conference-only batting average and slugging percentage, while Turner was poised for a breakout year with a .339 average and 26 RBIs before a season-ending injury. A former collegiate and professional player, Werman came to Radford after two years as the hitting coach under Bill Brown at George Mason. Werman was part of a Patriot team that advanced to NCAA Regional play in 2009, and his offensive coaching abilities helped four Mason position players become MLB First-Year Player Draft picks, including Scott Krieger, Chris Henderson and Justin Bour in 2009, and Ryan Soares in 2010. In Werman’s first season with the Patriots, he helped the team to their best batting average and slugging per-centage in school history, and the second-best on-base percentage. The team also scored the second-most runs, had the second-most RBIs and had the third-most homers in school history, all while having one of its better seasons in terms of fewest strikeouts. Mason’s first-ever first team All-America came on his watch as Henderson reached that milestone. Krieger was also named a second team All-America. In 2010, Werman’s guidance saw Soares put together a career offensive season. A first team All-America, all-region, and Wallace Award (shortstop of the year) finalist, Soares improved his batting average from .318 in 2009 to a Colonial Athletic Association-best .438, while his power numbers rose, including 13 homers and 71 RBIs. As a team, Mason hit .325 with Soares and Mark Hill (.414) both over the .400 mark. Werman’s coaching resume includes a year at Virginia, where he was a volunteer assistant coach under Brian O’Connor, helping the Cavaliers advance to NCAA Regional play. He previously spent one year as an as-sistant coach at Oakton High School in Fairfax County. As a player, Werman walked on at Virginia and became a four-year starter at second base for the Cavaliers. He played in 221 career games, second all-time at Virginia, while compiling a .278 batting average. Over his final two seasons, he put together a .988 fielding percentage. A team captain for the Cavaliers, he was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2005 and the 2005 All-Corvallis (Ore.) Regional Team.

Radford University’s baseball program announced the addition of Daniel Carte, one of the best players in Big South baseball history, to the field staff as the Highlanders’ volunteer assistant coach in September of 2011. Carte, a native of Hurricane, W.Va., joins Radford’s staff as a rookie coach following a standout college career and six seasons in professional baseball. His duties include assisting in all aspects of the program, with specific regard to program operations and managing Joe Raccuia Baseball Camps LLC. On the field, Carte will coach first base, and focus on hitters and outfielders. “It’s an honor to have Daniel in our program,” Raccuia says. “He’s one of the more prolific hitters in the history of this league and had a solid professional career. Hopefully his experiences, along with his commitment to joining this profession, will take him a long way. We are very fortunate to have someone who is this highly-thought-of and recommended to join our program.” The 52nd overall pick in the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies out of Winthrop, Carte is the highest pick in the history of the Big South Conference. Carte had a decorated collegiate career at Winthrop (2003-05), capped off by leading the Eagles to the 2005 Big South Tournament title and earning MVP honors in the process. In addition, Carte was a second team All-America pick in ’05. The league’s freshman of the year in 2003 and a three-time First Team All-Big South selection, Carte ranks in Winthrop’s career top-five in home runs (42) and total bases (432). His 19 homers in 2005 remain a program best. Carte played five seasons in the Rockies organization and a season of independent baseball, hitting .272 in his professional career with 61 homers. His first taste of coaching came during the summer of 2011 in the Cape Cod League, when he joined the field staff for the Falmouth Commodores – Carte was the league MVP with Falmouth in 2004. The Commodores advanced to the league championship series after finishing fourth in the Western Division during the regular season. “From the experiences I have, I feel can simplify the game– letting the players know what’s important and giving a reference point from my own experiences, something that can really help,” Carte says.

Highlander pros Ryan Speier, the second Radford player to play in the major leagues, spent the 2011 season the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Pacific League, part of Japan’s major leagues (NPB). Speier played his first season in Japan after four major league seasons with with Colorado Rockies (2005-09). He picked up eight saves, but his 2011 season was drastically impacted by the post-earth-quake tsunami that struck the Japanese coast and made world headlines. Speier, a native of Springfield, Va., was a standout pitcher for the High-landers from 1998-2001. He signed with the Colorado Rockies as a free agent in 2001, and made the 25-man Opening Day roster in 2005.

a history of professionals Phil Leftwich became the first Radford athlete in the major leagues when he joined the California Angels in 1993. The Angels’ top se-lection in the 1990 Major League draft, he was taken in the second round at pick No. 64. Only a handful of Big South players have ever been selected with a higher pick than Leftwich. A Lynchburg, Va., native, Leftwich was RU’s first all-conference and all-state pitcher. He helped Radford’s young baseball program turn the corner, leading the Highlanders to their first winning season in 1989. Leftwich was 7-2 with a 2.88 ERA for the 27-19 Highlanders that year, in only their fifth season of varsity play. Overall, he was 19-14, pitching 25 complete games and 265 innings from 1988-1990. He was named All-Big South in 1988 and 1989.

Leftwich left RU with 13 school pitching records and remain’s the school’s career leader in ERA (3.24) and complete games (25). He made his major league debut on July 29, 1993 against the Oakland A’s and posted a career-low 3.79 ERA in 12 starts as a rookie. His first career win was August 15 of that year at Seattle. Leftwich started 34 career games for the Angels, earned nine wins and posted a 4.99 ERA. Leftwich was inducted into the Radford University Athletic Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1995.

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTPENELOPE W. KYLE

Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford Univer-sity’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state govern-ment, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education.

Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle immediately fo-cused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation.

The Radford University strate-gic plan “7-17”, completed in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the invest-ment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University.

Under President Kyle’s leader-ship, the university also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering additional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations.

The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its mem-bership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and leadership innovation within the governing body.

A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies

in English at Southern Methodist University in Dal-las, Texas. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law and later earned her MBA from the College of William and Mary.

President Kyle served as Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery for 11 years, under three suc-cessive governors. First appointed by Governor

George Allen in 1994, she was reap-pointed by Governor James Gilmore, and then reappointed once again by Governor Mark Warner. Previously, Ms. Kyle was employed by CSX Corporation, an international transportation company, where she became the company’s first female officer. Before joining CSX Corpo-ration, she was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, LLP in Richmond. She also taught English for six years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.

President Kyle serves in leadership positions on numerous educational, civic, cultural, professional, financial

and volunteer organizations. She served on the Board of Visitors at James Madison University from 1984 until 1992 and on the JMU Foundation Board 1992 until 1994. She also served on the Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation Board from 1994 until 2000 and on the Board of Governors of Saint Christopher’s School from 1999 until 2005. President Kyle is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Board of Direc-tors of PRA, Inc., a publicly traded company.

Ms. Kyle is married to Charles L. Menges, an attorney and partner with McGuire, Woods, LLC. They are the parents of three children, son, Kyle Ward Menges, and two daughters, Penelope Whit-ley Menges, and Patricia Lee Menges.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSROBERT LINEBURG

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athlet-ics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Lineburg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprecedented on-and off-field improvements and successes.

In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the cata-lyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.

His most visible influences to date have been on the Dedmon Center and Radford University’s new 700-seat baseball stadium.

Beginning in the spring of 2008, the Dedmon Center, the centerpiece of Highlander athletics, underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities.

Along with the initial upgrades to the Dedmon Center, an improved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticket office and Learning Enhancement Center (LEC), which houses student-athlete academic support, were completed/added in 2009.

In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dug-outs to the Radford University Baseball Field.

This past spring, Radford transformed its baseball program in April of 2011 by opening a brand-new stadium and making the first signifi-cant adjustment to its home park since opening in 1986. For the first time ever, the Highlanders have the capability to host night games. The stadium features lighting standards that meet the requirements of NCAA Regional host sites.

In June, Robert Lineburg introduced Mike Jones as Radford Uni-versity’s 7th head men’s basketball coach.

Lineburg has also overseen the hires of six new head coaches as well as seven new athletic administrators.

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and soft-ball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first-ever NCAA tournament game in any sport.

Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’s tennis and softball Big South regular season title in 2009-10. Mickey Dean’s softball team went on to win their second straight conference tournament crown before advancing to the Ath-ens Regional final with two more NCAA Tournament victories.

The successes on the field continued in 2010-11 as Radford captured three more Big South titles. Women’s soccer and softball

claimed regular season crowns, while men’s tennis advanced to the NCAA Tournament with their fourth league tournament championship in five years.

Along with their competitive success, the Highlanders have de-fined the true meaning of “student-athlete” during Lineburg’s tenure. For the second consecutive year, Radford led all Big South institu-tions by placing 58.3 percent of its student-athletes on the confer-ence’s Presidential Honor Roll. In 2008-09, the Highlanders had 57.9 percent of their students on the list.

He and his staff have also been responsible for creating a five-year strategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilities master plan. Additional achievements include

ushering in a new athletics Internet site, and helping im-plement a new ticket system. Lineburg and his staff have also hosted top-level competition, with five Big South championships taking place on the Radford campus from 2008-11.

In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different orga-nizations and committees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball Improve-ment, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, a member of the selection committee to select Radford University’s Vice President for Advance-ment, and most recently, was selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee

Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athlet-ics, Lineburg’s corporate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s (Dallas, Texas) interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant coach at SMU. Following his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro.

A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his col-legiate basketball career as a Radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball staff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athletic director Norman Lineburg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Superintendent of Bristol City Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at William Byrd H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is the associate head football coach at the University of Richmond.

He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a native of Radford.Highlander Athletics
