Reversal in the Gospel One definition of the word “reversal” is this: The act of changing or being changed from one position, direction, or course to the opposite. This definition certainly fits what Jesus talks about in the Gospel today. We have heard our Lord say in others parts of the Gospel, “The first shall be last and the last shall be first.” Today we hear that “whoever exalts himself shall be humbled and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” Our Lord reminds us that if we are to truly follow in His footsteps, we must make sure we have a sense of humility in our lives. We must attempt as much as possible to put ourselves at the service of our brothers and sisters. This does not mean that we must think of ourselves as bad or unworthy. It means that there must be a healthy balance. Yes, we are good people because we have been created by God. However, we also have God-given freedom and if we use that freedom irresponsibly, we then get ourselves into trouble. Jesus is reversing the order of things. On the human level, people want to be first. They want to be noticed and have others admire them and tell them how wonderful they are. Some of that is good and even necessary to our self-esteem. However, it can get out of hand. Some people then believe they are better than others. They have no use for anyone else and certainly would not think about serving their brothers and sisters. Today, Jesus is reminding us of who we really are: sons and daughters of a loving God who is asking us to share that love with those around us by looking out for them, helping them and being there for them in their moments of need. Let us live our lives in loving service always keeping in mind that Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. We, as His followers, must do the same. Father David

Thank You!

I wish to sincerely thank all those who helped in planning and helping with our parish picnic. It was a wonderful event and everyone seemed to have a great time. A special “Thank you” also to our parish council who had been planning this event for many months: Matthew Sirmon, Maureen Sheehan, Sue Wedryk, Christina Novak, Nancy Flynn, Teresa McShane, Mike Loftsgaarden and Vinnie Romano. Thank you also to our Knights of Columbus for preparing the main entrée! Father David

Next Weekend We Will Welcome Father Tiscornia of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers

Next weekend, Father Thomas Tiscornia of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will speak at all the Masses. Father Tiscornia has served as a missionary in Kenya and Tanzania and will invite us to take part in the vital work of bringing Christ and His Gospel to all people.

There will be a second collection taken to support the work of the missions. Checks should be made payable to St. James the Apostle Parish with a note in the memo indicating it is for the 2nd Collection and we will direct all such donations to the missions.

While at the parish, Fr. Tiscornia will be happy to talk with any parishioners who are interested in doing overseas mission work.

Thomas A. Tiscornia was born on February 5, 1944 in Hoboken, New Jersey, son of August and Evelyn Nolan Tiscornia. He has three brothers and two sisters. He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grammar School in Tenafly, Saint Cecilia High School in Englewood and Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey where he received a B.S. in Secondary Education, and entered Maryknoll at Glen Ellyn, Illinois in September, 1966. Father Tiscornia was ordained at Maryknoll, New York on May 19, 1973 and was assigned to the Maryknoll Mission Region in Africa. At present, he is a member of Solidarity with South Sudan serving in Wau Diocese in South Sudan at Catholic Health Training Institute as chaplain and assisting with administration.

Bethlehem Nativity Products on Sale on the St. James Hall Stage Next Weekend during Hospitality

Bethlehem Nativity Products will be visiting our parish on behalf of the Christian families in Bethlehem. For centuries, the Christian and Catholics in Bethlehem have earned a living by carving olive wood religious art to sell to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are visiting journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for Catholic artisans to support their families by the dignified work of Christ’s birth. During their visit to our parish Bethlehem Nativity Products will have hand carved Nativities scenes, Ornaments, Statues, Crosses and much more beautiful olive wood hand carved religious items. Please consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land to support your fellow Catholics who choose to stay and protect the Holy sites where Jesus himself lived. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Catholic families. Please support this noble cause. For more information visit their website at: www.bethlehemnativity.com . They accept cash, personal checks, all credit cards and monthly installment payments as well. Thanks for your generosity.

Please stop by the hall on Saturday night, September 7th after Mass or for Hospitality Sunday on Sunday September 8th and visit their display on the stage.

[ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]

In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not to give in to

hopes of repayment, but to give openhandedly to the poor and needy. That sort of giving mirrors the

bountiful giving of God, and Jesus assures us it is

blessed indeed!

The collection amount for August 24/25 is $11,474.00

Thank you for your generosity-it is deeply appreciated!

Labor Day | Monday, September 2, 2019

Mass at 9:00 A.M. & All Parish Offices Closed On Monday, September 2nd, in honor of the Labor Day holiday, Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 A.M. All of the parish offices will be closed on Monday. Normal office hours will resume on Tuesday

Prayer for Labor Day Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with

another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: so guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the com-mon good;

And, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Unemployed

Loving Father, Creator of all things, you have made us in your own image and

intended us for creative work. Look with love on those who seek gainful

employment, and on those who are underemployed and in financial stress.

Guide our political leaders and the captains of

industry that they may provide concrete solutions to our national unemployment rate.

Give the families of those who are struggling both

patience and trust; and grant them strength, creativity and energy as they search for solutions.

May each of us work to understand how we can help

one another. Help us to build a society where all may have work

and find joy in doing it, for the good of our world and the glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As summer draws to a close, the Knights are thankful for this year’s Parish Picnic. Along with the many activities and games that took place, there was also FOOD! Once again the Knights had an opportunity to display their culinary skills by cooking up hot dogs and hamburgers on the grills.

The month of September will be a busy one for the Knights. During the month we will be having the Seminarian Raffle. We offer you the opportunity to purchase raffle books with the intention of using the money collected to financially help those young men in seminary. We will be in the church narthex on the weekends of September 14-15 and September 21-22 for this very worthy cause.

Toward the end of the month, expect to see the Knights on street corners soliciting funds during this year’s Tootsie Roll Drive to raise money for the Intellectually Disabled. Some of the money collected goes to state-wide causes, but the majority of it stays right here in this community. Please be generous when you see those Knights in their yellow aprons. And if you are interested in joining the Knights in this and their many other worthy endeavors, ask any Knight how you can get involved.

He has volunteered to come instead on Wednesday, September 4. Thank you to so many of you who came out to pray the rosary on the August 14. We hope you will join us again at 1186 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn on September 4 to pray along with our Bishop. The clinic will be open for business on that Wednesday.

An Evening with Laura Story Friday, Sept 13, 2018 at 7:00 PM

College Church Sanctuary 332 E. Seminary Ave. in Wheaton

Laura is a Bible teacher, worship leader, GRAMMY award-winning singer/songwriter, and author. “Blessings” was certified GOLD in 2011 and inspired her first book What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops. Laura’s music and writing show God’s love and grace intersecting with life, and are a reminder that despite questions or circumstances, God is the ultimate author of our story. Laura’s latest book is When God Doesn’t Fix It; Lessons You Never Wanted to Learn, Truths You Can’t Live Without. Her greatest joy is being a wife to Martin and the mother to Ben, Griffin, Josie and Timothy.

This benefit concert is for STARS Family Services, providing living arrangements for adults (some of whom are St. James Parishioners) with intellectual disabilities. A free will offering will be taken during the evening.

For more than fifty years the STARS Ministry! of College Church in Wheaton has come alongside people with developmental disabilities, ministering to them and their families with the love of Jesus. Over 135 families now participate in some aspect of the STARS ministry. The impact of the STARS ministry has grown throughout the western suburbs of Chicago providing Sunday morning Bible classes. recreation and respite programs. retreats, music. sibling and parent groups. It grew out of a great need and has been sustained by selfless, committed volunteers. As the ministry has matured so have the STARS and families it serves. Many aging parents share a common concern-where will their STAR live when they can no longer care for them? In response to this need, STARS Family Services was established to provide supportive living arrangements and elated services to adults with intellectual disabilities in the STARS ministry of College Church.
