The annual Walk for Warmth is Sunday, No-vember 5, at

2pm. The walk raises money through pledges for walking participation of RAs And GAs to support the Fayetteville Police Department’s Homeless Project to purchase warm clothing and items such as blankets, coats and socks. Many of the homeless are part of the Operation Inas-much Family.

Meet at the Jordan Soccer Complex parking lot (445 Treetop Drive). The walk begins at 2pm, so please ar-rive at 1:45pm to prepare. The walk is planned for up to 5 miles, however most walk 2 miles. Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

As a church, we practice the idea of When Helping Hurts. The idea behind When Helping Hurts is that sometimes, although we mean to help, we as Ameri-cans sometimes hurt those who are materialistically impoverished instead of helping. That as why we, as a church, have decided to partner with specific places, so we can invest financially, but get to know the families so we can learn as well as help. Here is a list of things that are NOT the best gifts to give in a ShoeBox:

• Anything with instructions in English, even if it seems simple to you.

• Any toy that is not universally recognizable

• Yo-yos

• Play-dough

• Stuffed animals (some animals signify different things in other cultures)

• Stickers or temporary tattoos (Kids don’t have any-where to stick the stickers, and often the pictures don’t make sense or connect with their world.)

• T-shirts with words or pictures on them (stick with colors, stripes, or pretty designs)

Approach filling a shoebox like you would approach picking out a gift for a friend’s child.

Pastor’s Perspective As I prepare for this Sunday’s message when I will talk about the moment

we get to see Jesus face-to-face, my mind is filled with all kinds of thoughts and images and my heart is yearning for that day. Though I know they pale in comparison, there are a few experiences in life that come to my mind as I try to imagine what that day will be like. Standing at the front of a church in Gastonia, NC and watching my bride appear in the doorway and walk down the aisle to join me in marriage. Watching my wife give birth to our three children in Louisville, KY and waiting to hold them for the first time. Landing on the tarmac at Pope Air Force Base after seven long months of combat in Saudi Arabia and Iraq for Operations Desert Shield and Storm, knowing my wife was in the crowd of flag-waving family members to welcome me home. Hours later, seeing my young children – one at a time – running down the hallway of our home here in Fayetteville at 1:30 in the morning to hug me. Tears are forming in my eyes as I pen these words even though these memories are all over 25 years old.

Our current sermon series on heaven is resonating with a lot of folks. Folks that have loved ones that have gone home to be with the Lord. Some long ago. Some only recently. Folks who have had more than their share of suffering and sorrow on this earth. They are weary from life’s battles and longing for rest and peace. Folks who are knocking on heaven’s door. They know their days on this earth are numbered and they are excited about the future God has in store for them.

Bart Millard, the vocalist for the Christian rock band, MercyMe, was 18 years old when his father died in 1991. As he thought about his father, he began to write the words “I can only imagine” on various items, ultimately leading him to write the lyrics to the song by the same title: “I can only image what it will be like when I walk by your side. I can only imagine what my eyes will see when your face is before me. Surrounded by your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you, Jesus, or in awe of you be still? Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine.”

Indeed we can only imagine. That song will be part of our worship in both services this Sunday. I can’t wait! See you Sunday! ~ John
