WHAT TO EXPECT AT STM
WelcomingOur parishioners love meeting
new people and sharing their lives with others. You’ll also be greeted by some of the most welcoming
people you’ve ever met at a Church - and we’re not just talking about the
Hospitality Team.
Family-focusedIf you have children, they are
ALWAYS welcome to celebrate Mass with the community! In fact, our Church was purposefully built without a cry room because we want children at Mass. We also have a special family bathroom
with child-sized “facilities.”
Dynamic WorshipThroughout the Mass, you’ll be
encouraged and invigorated by the community’s full, conscious, and active participation in the Liturgy. Our community loves to SING!
The Word of God is proclaimed in a dynamic fashion. The homilies
are geared towards loving people where they are - and challenging them to become better Christians.
A CHURCH UNLIKE ANY OTHERThere’s so much more to talk about! Our Parish is a wonderful, dynamic
community and we welcome you to celebrate liturgy with us
this weekend!
It doesn’t matter if this is your first time, 50th time, or first time in 50
years - know that you always have a place to worship, and a community
to belong to at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Celebrating the Ministry of Fr. Larry Wrenn
Fr. Wrenn, ret i red from the archdiocese of Hartford, has helped at STM for several years, most recently as the regular celebrant for Saturday morning Masses. You also see him as a concelebrant at holiday and special celebration Masses and at penance services. He’s the quiet, slim one with silvery white hair and the quick, welcoming smile. Always positive, cheerful and eager to share experiences with parishioners, he exhibits an unusual humility (he’d never tell anyone about once having a single digit golf handicap - just that he doesn’t keep score today). But there’s more to know about him!
He is an internationally respected canon lawyer with a doctorate (JCD) from the Lateran University in Rome. In addition to his “regular” assignment as Officialis (the judicial vicar) for the Archdiocese of Hartford, he found time to write several textbooks relating to procedural and marriage law and to contribute articles to academic journals. He taught canon law courses during several summer sessions at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Always in demand as a keynote speaker and for prestigious academic lectures, he also served multiple terms as a consultant to the US Bishops’ Conference and to the Vatican’s Supreme Court (Signatura). The Canon Law Society of America awarded him their highest honors including designation as a lifetime member (an honor bestowed on only 4 members in the 20th century) and commissioning/publishing a Festschrift (a collection of articles from the international canon law community in his honor) to celebrate his retirement. And of course, he always filled in for weekend liturgies at the Cathedral in Hartford.
Fr. Wrenn was born in New Haven, CT, attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, NY. He was ordained in 1953 and retired in 2003. He came to Sarasota in 1994, first enjoying golfing vacations, later as a seasonal and now a full-time resident. Today Sarasota and St. Thomas More are “home.”
Fr. Wrenn has chosen to fully retire, and will no longer be the celebrant for the Saturday morning Mass. We are very grateful that Fr. Wrenn has been with us these many years, serving the people of St. Thomas More. When you see him, please wish him well!

STEWARDSHIP
On this First Sunday of Advent, we are invited to examine our relationship to God as we prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is a time for us to deepen our connection to the Lord through various opportunities and paths.
As sinners we are expected to reconcile with God. In the Gospel from Mark, Jesus advises us to “Be watchful! Be alert!” The Lord is not speaking about next week, nor even the Christmas for which we prepare. This is something He expects us to do today, this instant.
Christ makes reference to a Master who, like God, leaves others in charge of His household. God expects each of us to be stewards of His household. He has left us His household, His Church, and we are supposed to build and maintain His Church. He has given us free will; in other words God has given us authority over the gifts He has given us.
Finally, He expects each of us to fulfill our role in His Kingdom. Stewardship invites every one of us to participate and to contribute to the good of the whole, our faith community — not next week, not just at Christmas, but now. “God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” http://www.thecatholicsteward.com
Stewardship One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them with justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.
Stewardship • is not about giving because the church has needs • is not about getting people to fill our ministries • is not about fulfilling some obligation to avoid guilt • is not about keeping up with our neighbors
Stewardship • is about understanding everything is a gift from God • is about knowing that God has given us these gifts for which to care • is about being aware that God expects us to share generously these gifts out of gratitude!
You are invited to be part of the Stewardship Committee. Learn new and exciting ways to introduce and build Stewardship within our parish.

MORE PRAYER

/pray
More Prayer: Our prayer book of the Sick is located in the Chapel. Write your intention; be assured that those entered are prayed for daily.
Purple is the Color of AdventPurple has traditionally been the primary color of Advent, symbolizing
repentance and fasting. Purple is also the color of royalty, demonstrating the anticipation and reception of the coming King - Jesus Christ.
Pink (or rose) is a color of Advent, used during the third week of Advent. It represents joy or rejoicing and reveals a shift in the season away from repentance and toward celebration. A pink candle is lighted in the church Advent wreath at the beginning of the weekend Masses and pink vestments are also worn.
As we begin Advent, we light one candle in the midst of all the dark-ness in our lives and in the world, symbolizing our longing, our desire, our hope. Three “advents” or “comings” shape our desire: Jesus’s com-ing in Bethlehem; in the daily events of our lives; the second coming. When you wake up, each day this week, light your “inner candle” tak-ing a few moments to focus. Who among us doesn't have time to pause for a moment? “Lord, the light I choose to let into my life today is based on my trust in you. It is a weak flame, but I so much desire that it dispel a bit more darkness today. Today, I just want to taste the longing I have for you as I go to the meeting this morning, carry out the responsibilities of my work, face the frustration of some difficult relationships. Each morning this week, that momentary prayer might get more spe-cific, as it prepares us for the day we will face. • as we head to work • walk to a meeting • rush through lunch • take care of errands • meet with people • pick up the phone to return some calls • answer e-mail
MAKE AN ADVENT WREATH Each night, reflect on your day. Get in touch with the longing within. How did I prepare today? How am I or my family being invited to trust more deeply? How much more do we long for his coming to us, in the midst of the darkness in our world? Transform your evening meal with some kind of conversation together that lights a candle of anticipation in your lives. Don't worry if everyone isn't “good at” this kind of conversation at first. Remember, “Every-thing we do teaches.” And every night this week, be aware! Give thanks! Be grateful! Grow in your desire!

Catholic Social Teaching EDUCATION: Become familiar with the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching and how these precepts
call us to protect human life, stand with the poor and care for creation. They inspire us to work for greater charity, peace and justice as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus (we have hightlighted them in the past 4 bulletins).
DIRECT SERVICE: Reaches across boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity, gender and disabling conditions. It serves those who are poor and vulnerable by sharing one’s time and talent more generously with those in need at home and abroad. There are many ministries here at St. Thomas More doing direct service :Quilters, Growing through Grief, Arcadia Outreach, Helping Hands, Prison Ministry and more.
CHANGING SYSTEMS: Working to change the structures that deny people their dignity and rights as children of God. Advocating public policies that protect human life, promote human dignity, preserve God’s creation and build peace. The Peace and Justice Ministry at our parish has been working to change systems locally by its membership in SURE--Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity. Other means of changing systems involve writing to members of Congress, voting and letters to the editor.

Casserole Club This group of men, widowers, married and single, meet on the last Monday of the month at noon for lunch at various restaurants. We meet to enjoy cama-raderie and to support widowers reminding them they are not alone, are part of our community and to keep them involved in parish life. Send Jack Dyer your email address so he can in-form you of the restaurant the group will be going to and answer your questions. Contact: Jack Dyer: [email protected] or (941) 921-4901.
