Readings for Sunday,
July 12, 2020 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary
Time:
Is 55:10–11 Ps 65:10, 11, 12–13, 14 Rom 8:18–23 Mt 13:1–23
or 13:1–9
In the short reading from Isaiah the workings of the natural world become the vehicle for saying something about the word of God. This
simple metaphor lays bare several characteristics of what ecologists call the “integrity of creation.” The first is the inter-relationship that exists between the various spheres. Without water, the earth would not be fertile; without the fruits of the earth, human beings would not have food to eat. Speaking through the prophet, God declares: So it is with my word! A cause and effect relationship exists between the word of God and the outcome that it accomplishes; the word of God is consistent and reliable; and human beings are totally dependent upon it.
The responsorial psalm develops the theme of “nature” in a different direction. Whereas the previous reading concentrated on the unfolding of the life processes within nature itself, this passage describes God as directly involved in these natural workings. Behind God’s control of the water may be a polemic against the fertility god Baal. The Canaanites believed that this god regulated the heavenly waters that rained down upon the land, fertilizing it and making it fruitful. Actually, it is Israel’s God who governs the heavenly waters and reigns over the land, bringing the much needed water to it and preparing it for planting. Although the psalm is a hymn of praise, the exaltation itself is also a form of thanksgiving. Paul maintains that the entire created world is somehow swept up with humankind in the eschatological drama. Frustration in the beginning when it was cursed because of human sin (see Gen 3:17), it now awaits the revelation that will be granted the children of God. The only way that one can understand this thinking is if the bond between the natural world and humanity is acknowledged. Paul further insists that the sufferings that we are forced to bear now are the “birth pangs of the messiah” referred to in Jewish eschatology. As is the case with a woman in labor, the pain may be intense, but as hers are forgotten when
the child is born, so will the present afflictions pass (see Mt 24:8; Mk 13:8). Parabolic teaching was a very common pedagogical technique. As is so often the case in wisdom thinking, nature provides examples from which to gain insights into human life. “The parable of the sower” might better be called “the parable of the soil” for the focus here is neither on the sower nor on the seed, but on the character of the soil. Taken at face value, the parable is not a difficult story to understand. The word (seed) produces various percentages of yield. But what does it really mean? When one understands the meaning of the parable, one is apt to wonder: What kind of soil am I? How receptive am I to the word of God? Reflection:
The readings for this Sunday call us to self-examination. The gospel describes various levels of receptivity, the willingness to allow ourselves to receive from another, to be influenced by another, perhaps even to be transformed. The more independent we are, the less likely we will be open to others and, consequently, less receptive to their ideas. By definition disciples are receptive to the one they follow. To be a disciple of Jesus requires receptivity, so it is important that we scrutinize ourselves to discover the extent to which we are open. To what should we be receptive? To the words of Scripture, the words of the liturgy, the words of the sacraments, the living tradition of the community. God’s word is sown in many forms and under many guises. It makes little difference who sows the seed. How will we receive it? Besides the word of God, the readings speak of the world of God. The people of biblical times were aware of the revelation of God in and through the natural world. Isaiah teaches about the effectiveness of the word of God through the metaphor of rain. The psalmist uses the natural world to describe God’s work of salvation. Paul claims that eschatological fulfillment will include all of creation. Finally, Jesus’ parables are rooted in stories about nature. We cannot afford to close our eyes to the needs of the natural world, or stop our ears to the cries of the earth, or harden our hearts to the world of which we are a part, for the word of God will accomplish the end for which God sent it.
Thoughts to consider this Week:
TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE
Most stories aren’t very mysterious. Even so-called mysteries have predictable plots that we anticipate before they unfold. We know, for example, that the fellow wandering into the cemetery at dusk is going to meet a bad end, and the storyteller knows that we know. It’s all part of the fun. When reading Bible parables, the meaning is rarely mysterious. Seeds fall on different soil, reap different results. No surprise there. A parable’s mystery isn’t in not knowing, but in not seeing. What kind of soil are we? What seed has been planted in us, awaiting its harvest?

Caring for Friends Caring for Friends still needs your help with making meals for the homebound. We had a wonderful response to our last request and find ourselves in need again. Since many people spend the summer elsewhere, we usually see a decrease in donated meals over the summer months and we have already seen our meal supply run low. There are many homebound people who are still in need in our area. Please consider picking up a pack of empty trays and making an extra meal occasionally to feed our homebound friends. The empty trays are kept on top of the Caring for Friends freezer in the St. Rose garage. The garage is open daily from 9-5. Please fill the trays with a complete meal (protein, starch and vegetable) and then freeze them. Return the frozen meals to the freezer at St. Rose at your convenience. If you have any questions, or you cannot pick up trays and would like us to deliver them to you, please call Anita Capps at 267-664-0241 or Chris McDade at 215-801-8869. LEGION of MARY BROTHER HOUSE

Donations of fresh fruit (a couple dozen oranges, bananas, pears or apples), fresh-made individually wrapped sandwiches, single serving size trail mix, and cheese sticks are needed on July 9 and July 23. If you can help by donating snacks for one of the summer service dates, contact Jane Selner at 215-699-4617 or [email protected] to confirm what you will provide and arrange a convenient time to drop them off to the Parish office.
