PASTOR’S PARISHABLES

The beatitudes, with woes to match, were featured last

Sunday from Luke’s version of Christ’s Sermon on the

Mount. The following was not one of them—but we were

thinking it: "Blessed are those who went south this winter,

& woe to us who have stayed." This Sunday’s Morning

Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours includes part of “The

Canticle of the Children” from the Book of Daniel—&

adds insult to injury:

All you winds, bless the Lord.

Cold & chill, bless the Lord,

Ice & snow, bless the Lord.

Come on man; how’s a person supposed to pray that &

mean it? I skipped it & replaced it with Song of Songs’

“Tryst in Spring” (2:10:13): “My lover speaks: he says to

me, / ‘Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, / & come! /

For see, the winter is past, / the rains are over & gone. /

The flowers appear on the earth, / the time of pruning the

vines has come / & the song of the dove is heard in our

land. / The fig tree puts forth its figs, / & the vines, in

bloom, give forth fragrance. / Arise, my beloved, my

beautiful one, / & come!’” Much better.

The snow, though, for some is more blessing than

curse—more blessed than woeful in the language of last

Sunday’s gospel. Some play in it, some make money

moving it, some ski on it, some just watch it & maybe

even marvel, seeing diamonds.

The authors of Scripture were not thinking of work or

play when they thought of snow it seems, but instead how

effective (relentless?) God’s Word is: “As the rain & the

snow come down from heaven, & do not return to it with-

out watering the earth & making it bud & flourish, … so

shall my word be. … It shall not return to me void, but

shall do my will.” (Is 55:10-11). Or how purified we want to

be: “Wash me, make me whiter than snow.” (Ps 51:9) Or

how holy God is: “His clothing was snow bright.” (Dn 7:9)

Or how glorious the angel of Christ’s resurrection: “His

appearance was like lightning & his clothing was white as

snow.” (Mt 28:3) Or how sublime the exalted Christ: “The

hair of his head was as white as wool or as snow, & his

eyes were like a fiery flame.” (Rev 1:14)

Snow. There’s a lot of it in the Bible too—although still

not as much as there’s been in this February. 6 weeks ago

we sang, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.” But no

more; let it stop, let it stop, let it stop. However, we can

still cozy up, light a fire, & maybe revisit some lines of

Whittier’s “Snowbound” from that poetry anthology you still have:

Unwarmed by any sunset light

The grey day darkened into night,

A night made hoary with the swarm

and whirl dance of the blinding storm,

As zig-zag, wavering to and fro,

Crossed and recrossed the wingèd snow:

And ere the early bedtime came

The white drift piled the window frame,

and through the glass the clothes-line posts

looked in like tall and sheeted ghosts....

And when the second morning shone,

We looked upon a world unknown,

On nothing we could call our own.

Around the glistening wonder bent

The blue walls of firmament,

No cloud above, no earth below,—

A universe of sky and snow!....

Anticipating our clustering with Fairmont come July 1,

our parishes’ leadership groups met with Fr. Beerman &

me this past Tuesday evening. That included St. Mary’s

Pastoral-Finance Council and SS Peter & Paul Pastoral

Council & Finance Council. The purpose of our meeting

included introductions & 1st discussions for the sake of a

smooth transition. As announced last week, the 4 parishes

in East Chain, Winnebago, Blue Earth & Fairmont will be

pastored by Fr. Beerman who will be joined by a young

priest who will be his associate pastor.

This meeting was much more about relationships &

trust than about new information. A lot of this will need

to be wait & see. It was a very congenial gathering with

more explanation about the reason for this change (besides

my age): Bishop Quinn, at the suggestion-

recommendation of the Pastoral Planning Committee, sees

the value in having a priest who’s newly or fairly newly

ordained gaining pastoral experience by living out of the

same rectory with an experienced pastor & work-ing with

him day by day. This can be far more a mentor-ing

relationship than when 2 priests live 18 miles apart. At the

same time, from the parishes’ point of view, there will still

be 2 pastors giving pastoral care to these 4 parishes, as

there is now. There were a number of ideas & suggestions

about how to continue the priestly presence in Blue Earth

(& the Catholic Church presence in Winne-bago & E.

Chain) even though the priests’ residence will be in

Fairmont. Fr. Beerman is also committed to this.

Renew Faith. Extend Mercy. Inspire Hope is the name of

this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal. I hope you consider

this appeal a priority (among the many you probably

receive). It makes possible the many retreats & confer-

ences for our youth & young adults to encounter Christ;

faith formation for laity to share the rich story of our faith

in their parishes; catechetical training for hundreds of

priests, parish & school staff; support with vocations

discernment; resources to strengthen marriages & families;

ongoing assistance to our parishes & schools; &

community outreach to the poor. A wide array of minis-tries is available as our Church helps thousands renew faith,

extend mercy, inspire hope—because you & I make it

possible. Please give generously to this year’s appeal. I

personally found the material we recently received highly

informative & even motivational. It’s a vibrant Church.
