THUNDER SNOW CONFIRMED FOR KENTUCKY DERBYBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Thunder Snow, the winner of the March 25 UAE Derby

Sponsored By The Saeed & Mo-hammed Al Naboodah Group (G2) at Meydan Racecourse, has been confirmed for the May 6 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), Godolphin Racing announced April 29.

“Sheikh Mohammed has made the decision to run Thunder Snow in the Kentucky Derby,” trainer Saeed bin Suroor said. “The horse is in good form. He is sound, healthy, and working really well, and I am so happy with him.

“It is great to see another horse from Godolphin travel to the Kentucky Derby, as it is one of the best races in the world.”

Bin Suroor will saddle his seventh runner in the Kentucky Derby. His best effort came when China Visit finished sixth behind Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. Godolphin's best finish in the Kentucky Derby came when the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Frosted ran fourth behind eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in 2015.

A Godolphin homebred, Thunder Snow prevailed by a short head over Epicharis after a long stretch battle in the UAE Derby. The son of Australian sire Helmet ended his 2-year-old season with a win in the seven-furlong Criterium International (G1) at Saint-Cloud in France Oct. 30 and did not run again until the UAE Two Thousand

Guineas Sponsored By District One Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City (G3) over the Dubai dirt course Feb. 23, winning by 5 3/4 lengths.

Godolphin paid the $6,000 late nomination fee for the Triple Crown the week before Thunder Snow's UAE Derby victory.

“He was the leading horse in England last year and he won a group 1 in France,” Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser, John Ferguson, said of Thunder Snow after his UAE Derby win. “He's a homebred, so he is very

dear to our hearts.”Bin Suroor added that Thunder

Snow will quarantine for two days upon his arrival in the U.S. and “then it will be back to his normal routine.” The colt is slated to arrive April 30, flying from Dubai to Cincinnati and then vanning to Louisville.

Jockey Christophe Soumillon will have the mount.

"Thunder Snow has improved a lot and it would be brilliant to see him run well," bin Suroor said. BH

TRUST IN TAMMY: FOX TAUGHT J BOYS ECHO HIS LESSONS WELLBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

To listen to Dale Romans and Tammy Fox banter back and forth is to soak in a micro-

cosm of the 27 years they have spent by each other's side.

A fair amount of snark peppers exchanges between the trainer and his top assistant, exercise rider, and longtime partner—matter-of-fact business talk mixed with a level of sarcasm befitting an old married couple—save for the fact they are neither elderly nor have taken the plunge to become legally bound.

They laugh. They bicker. They jab at each other in a way no others can. But when Fox offers her companion her thoughts on what her legs, seat, and hands are telling her about the charges in his care, there is nothing remotely blithe about the communication.

“You can write it in stone, whatever she tells me. And the feedback from her is invaluable,” Romans said of Fox. “When she can't ride anymore, that's when I retire and we go off to Key West.”

Given the number of top charges Fox's diminutive frame has been aboard, it's little wonder her gregarious partner heeds her when she says one of his young runners is worthy of faith. Last season, she tabbed an immature bay son Mineshaft as one of her projects.

J Boys Echo was never bad or mean. He just didn't absorb his lessons as quickly as some of his more naturally brilliant brethren. Because Fox realized that early on, and because she gave him the special attention he required, the strong-bodied colt is now set to become the second straight representative for Albaugh Family Stable in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

There is certain level of pride that comes when one talks up a protege and then see that student make good on the boasts. After months of working to get J Boys Echo to shed his lackadaisical tendencies, Fox was like a beaming mom when the colt hit the wire 3 1/2

lengths in front in the March 4 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack, an effort that locked him into the Kentucky Derby field.

Six months ago, had it been suggested the Albaugh clan and Romans barn would be hanging their classic aspirations on the green colt who broke his maiden at Keeneland Oct. 27, one would have been right to think someone had gotten their bay runners mixed up.

While his former stablemate and fellow Albaugh colorbearer Not This Time was a buzz horse on the Churchill Downs backside heading into his runner-up finish in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), J Boys Echo was still trying to figure out the game and didn't make his debut under the Twin Spires until early October.

He could be a lazy sort during his morning routines, but Fox determined quickly it was lack of focus— not absence of talent—that was holding J Boys Echo back. She started getting on the colt from the time he arrived from Florida after being broken by Barry

Berkelhammer, and used every session on the track as an opportunity to teach him how to be a racehorse.

“He was just a little bit further behind horses like Not This Time and ... I took my time with him,” Fox said. “I would always just put him behind horses, get the dirt in his face, (and) try (to) get more experience into him. And whenever I would ask him—when I knew it was (the) right moment to make that next move on him—I would just smootch to him and I could feel that acceleration and that power from underneath me, that it was there.

“Whenever I'm galloping one and I know I can handle them really good, I just tend to pay a lot of attention to them and try to get the most out of the horses I'm galloping. And he showed it for me.”

What told Fox she was on the right path with J Boys Echo was not a race result or bullet move, but rather when she noticed him responding quicker to tasks he was previously indifferent to. After a three-furlong work at Churchill last summer, Fox could tell there was an extra sharpness to his ways, a flicker in his mind that his competitive juices were starting to percolate.

“I could tell a difference when he went back to the track. He was just more focused in his training,” Fox recalled. “When I'm able to get on one of the babies when they first come back, and they're good, I like them. It means they have a lot of class, a lot of talent underneath them. And I like sticking with those horses likes that. I'm lucky enough he didn't get tough with me and I've been able to stay with him this whole time.”

“J Boy is obviously more of a special project,” Romans added. “(Fox) doesn't only work him. She gallops him every day and has ever since he came in. And he was not the most mature horse when we got

him. He would do a lot of things wrong. And she kind of got him focused and doing things the right way.”

That didn't mean J Boys Echo still didn't take his sweet time to fully come around. He followed up his 5 1/2-length maiden win by finishing a well-beaten fourth to Gunnevera in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3) Nov. 19—an outing that took place just two days prior to the announcement of Not This Time's career-ending soft-tissue injury. With the weight of filling monster shoes on his shoulders, J Boys Echo took a baby step forward when he ran third during his seasonal debut in the Feb. 4 Withers Stakes (G3) before completely turning the tables on multiple graded stakes victor El Areeb in the Gotham.

“When you start talking highly on a horse and they perform like you think they can, it's rewarding,” Fox grinned.

Fox has long been respected as one of the toughest pound-for-pound figures on any backstretch, revered for her skill in the saddle, embraced for her warmth, and feared for what her quick tongue can unleash at those who do wrong to her loved ones.

Because of what Fox has, and continues to instill into J Boys Echo, Romans feels comfortable drawing a line through the colt's fourth-place effort in the April 8 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), a run that was hampered by soft fractions and a less-than-ideal trip.

When the Louisville native says he has not seen a better rider or had a better partner in his personal and professional journey than the pint-sized lady beneath her trademark red helmet, it is an instance where the man famous for quips doesn't have a hint of jest in his tone.

“There are a lot of good things about Tammy that people don't know. They know she can ride, but she's poetry in motion on the back of a horse,” Romans said. “She was born to ride, built to ride, and there is nobody better. But besides that, she's a better mother and better partner than she is a rider.” BH

FAST WORK RELIEF FOR GIRVIN'S CONNECTIONSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

As owner Brad Grady relayed Girvin's :59 3/5 time for a five-furlong breeze April 29 at Keeneland,

gathered friends and family let out a relieved cheer. The TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) winner

and top points earner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, forced trainer Joe Sharp to make last-minute adjustments after developing a quarter crack in his right front foot. The son of Tale of Ekati worked with two different bar shoes on his front feet Saturday, his first breeze since April 15, when he earned the bullet among 30 workers at Churchill's Trackside Training Center for a half-mile in :47 4/5.

Since then Girvin's foot has received treatment, and to retain fitness, he has spent time in the pool at

Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center and used the hyperbaric chamber there.

After Saturday's five-furlong move, Sharp said “relief” was the word of the day at his Barn 18 on the Keeneland backstretch.

Sharp's wife Rosie Napravnik was aboard Girvin for Saturday's work and Sharp was on appropriately named workmate Hotfoot, affording the trainer a close-up view of his Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) hopeful as they prepared for the breeze. Rain from the night before yielded to thick clouds Saturday morning in Lexington, and the track was fast as Girvin started the work, clicking off two :12 furlongs for the first half-mile.

He then shifted into another gear in the stretch, and his long stride propelled him to a gallop out to six furlongs in 1:13 2/5.

“It was an exceptional work—one of the best works I've ever seen him have. Rosie said the same thing,” Sharp said. “There was a point in the turn where I told Rosie to slow down a bit, and she said, 'I don't think we're going that fast.’ I think it was just that he was doing it so effortlessly.”

Grady also was thrilled with the move, which ranked second-fastest of 16 at the distance Saturday.

“How could you not like that work? He worked like a monster and galloped out like a monster,” Grady said. “Now he's cooling out good. Good horses work like that. He looked comfortable.”

Sharp and Grady watched Girvin after the breeze as he comfortably walked for 1 1/2 hours on a path outside the barn.

“He galloped out good and seems to be doing well,” Sharp said. “As long as he stays like he is now, he's on track for the Derby. He showed today that he didn't lose any fitness. He had plenty left. (Napravnik) said she couldn't get him pulled up until they got to the five-eighths pole.”

Sharp said getting out on the track aboard Hotfoot, who finished eighth in the Louisiana Derby, afforded him some added oversight of Girvin. He said he kept a close watch on the colt as he entered the track and when he walked and warmed up.

“You can see a lot more when you're actually looking them in the eye,” Sharp said.

Sharp said the quarter crack is stabilized and they're keeping it clean. For Saturday's work, Girvin wore a special bar shoe made for him by Dr. Raul Bras, a foot specialist with Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. He also wore a bar shoe on his left front because he'd had an old quarter crack on that foot, Sharp said.

“That one has not been an issue. It's completely grown out," Sharp said. “Raul felt like making them both even and stabilizing them would be best."

Sharp said Girvin will probably wear the special shoe until race day and then it will likely be changed for the race, although he added he'd leave the decision on what shoes to wear on race day up to Bras.

Grady said Girvin's foot will continue to be evaluated this week to make sure he's comfortable going forward.

“Here's the deal. It's a foot. It's not like we have a suspensory (issue). It's not like we have a (bone) chip or a knee (injury). It's a foot. It's not the optimal time to have a foot (issue), but if you're going to pick any injury—if you had to pick one ... ,” Grady said, expressing confidence in Dr. Bras. “It's either going to be good enough to run, or he's not going to run. Feet aren't marginal. It's going to be good or it's not.”

Sharp said Girvin will stay at Keeneland the next few days, likely returning to KESMARC for further use of the hyperbaric chamber and possibly the pool. Grady said as long as he comes out of the work well, the plan is to ship to Churchill Downs May 3, adding that they'd always planned to stay at Keeneland as long as possible to avoid the limelight.

Girvin will enter the Derby with just two works since winning the April 1 Louisiana Derby, but Sharp is confident his first Derby starter is fit.

Girvin previously dealt with changed plans. He spent time at Evangeline Downs Training Center after his eye-catching debut win in December to take advantage of the hyperbaric chamber and quiet environment, but missed the Jan. 21 Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots because of the equine herpesvirus outbreak at the New Orleans track.

During that time, the colt developed the quarter crack in his left front. With the quarantine finally lifted in late January and Girvin's foot back to good health, he returned with a runner-up finish in a one-mile turf stakes Feb. 4 at Fair Grounds.

In hindsight, everything worked out fine. The quarantine provided added time for Girvin to recover from his foot problem, and the turf race set Girvin up for his Feb. 25 Risen Star Stakes (G2) performance, where he rated in fifth early before taking command in midstretch on his way to a two-length score in the 1 1/16-mile event.

Girvin followed that effort with a clear victory in the Louisiana Derby, where he rallied from fourth to stay undefeated in three dirt starts.

“He's amazing—very resilient,” Sharp said. “That's the kind of horse you want for the Derby. He's able to adjust with anything.” BH

GORMLEY PUTS IN UNCONVENTIONAL FINAL DERBY WORKBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

At the top of the stretch the morning of April 29 at Santa Anita Park, two colts with white blazes and

John Shirreffs saddlecloths were side by side.Jockey Victor Espinoza was aboard one, but it

wasn't the colt he's scheduled to ride May 6 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). Instead of working Jerry and Ann Moss' Gormley—his Derby mount—the soon-to-be Hall of Fame jockey was aboard the Mosses' Ziconic, who served as the Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner's target.

“It's different, but I wanted to make sure I set up the pace for (Gormley),” Espinoza said. “Nothing crazy, but not that slow, either. Steady until he ran by me.”

Other than the distance—Gormley stretched out to seven furlongs in 1:26 1/5 Saturday—the work was the same as his drill a week prior. The Malibu Moon colt started well behind his workmate, moved up in the turn, and dropped to the rail to pass on the inside in the stretch under exercise rider Francisco Alvarado.

“I thought the work was very good. I thought he worked very well,” Shirreffs said. “(Alvarado) has been working him since before his last race, so we didn't want to change anything. He's been doing a great job, so there's no need to change anything. Having Victor on the pace horse was also important, because Victor has a good sense of pace and it also gave him a good chance to look at Gormley when he was alongside him.”

Shirreffs said the decision to put Espinoza

on Gormley's workmate was not a new idea. The trainer said he employed the same tactics during some works for 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, when he would have regular jockey Mike Smith ride her workmate. Zenyatta also is Ziconic's dam.

“I did it quite a bit with Mike Smith and Zenyatta,” Shirreffs said. "The pace is important, so you need someone who will set up a nice pace.”

Shirreffs also said Royal Mo—who is currently ranked 21st in the Road the Kentucky Derby standings—will join Gormley on a flight to Louisville May 1. Royal Mo worked six furlongs in 1:13 flat Saturday at Santa Anita.

“They leave early Monday. They’ll get there Monday afternoon, (and) on Tuesday they’ll jog or stretch their legs some way,” Shirreffs said.

Fellow Southern California resident Sonneteer, a Calumet Farm homebred who is winless in 10 starts but ran second in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and fourth in the Arkansas Derby (G1) to get 30 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, is now in the field of 20. Trainer Keith Desormeaux said the Midnight Lute colt departed for Churchill Downs Saturday morning. BH

BATTALION RUNNER, MALAGACY TO BYPASS KENTUCKY DERBYBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Malagacy and Wood Memorial Stakes presented by NYRA Bets (G2)

runner-up Battalion Runner will both bypass the May 6 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), trainer Todd Pletcher said April 29.

Pletcher indicated in recent days that Sumaya U.S. Stable's Malagacy was highly likely to skip the first leg of the Triple Crown in the wake of the colt's fifth-place finish in the April 15 Arkansas Derby (G1). The son of Shackleford is now expected to breeze Friday and will point for the May 20 Preakness Stakes (G1).

Battalion Runner's defection comes on the heels of a less-than-satisfactory four-furlong workout in :48 2/5 at Churchill Downs April 28. Pletcher said after the move he was not pleased with how St. Elias Stable's son of Unbridled's Song handled the main surface, adding exercise rider Nick Bush confirmed that he felt track was "cupping out" from under his mount.

“It wasn't the powerful work that I was hoping for from him,” Pletcher said.

With Malagacy and Battalion Runner out, Lookin At Lee and Sonneteer are now in the 20-horse Kentucky Derby lineup.

L N R Racing's Lookin At Lee exits a third-place run in the Arkansas Derby and came in fourth in the Nov. 5 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). The son of Lookin At Lucky most recently worked an easy half-mile in :51 1/5 for trainer Steve Asmussen at Churchill April 24.

Calumet Farm's homebred Sonneteer is winless in 10 starts, but the Midnight Lute colt trained by Keith Desormeaux earned points with a runner-up effort in the March 18 Rebel and a fourth-place run in the Arkansas Derby. Buchanan (1884), Sir Barton (1919), and Brokers Tip (1933) are the only maidens to win the Kentucky Derby. Sir Barton went on to become racing's first Triple Crown winner.

Grade 3 winner Royal Mo, third last time out in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) for Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs, is now the bubble horse. The Uncle Mo colt currently sits in the 21st position on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. BH

RASHINSKIS TAKE ANOTHER RUN AT THE KENTUCKY OAKSBy Evan Hammondst @BH_EHammonds

The second time around might be the charm for Ron and Ricki Rashinski. The Chicago-area couple

brought their Ashland Stakes (G1)-winning filly Bush-fire to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in 2006 and wound up third (disqualified to sixth) behind longshot Lemons Forever. Eleven years later they'll return to Louisville with another Ashland winner, Sailor's Valentine.

The 3-year-old filly by Mizzen Mast, trained by Bushfire trainer Eddie Kenneally, races for the Rashinksis' Homewrecker Racing and the Semaphore Racing group of Louise Lally and her daughter Dana Haugli.

Both Bushfire (15-1) and Sailor's Valentine (22-1) were longshots in the Ashland. While Bushfire was more accomplished at this stage—she won Tampa Bay Downs' Florida Oaks—Sailor's Valentine had "kind of lost her way," according to Ron Rashinski.

Sharp at 2 going six furlongs first time out at Keeneland, Sailor's Valentine pressed on the lead, going a half-mile in :45.37 in the one-mile Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs, bringing fellow Oaks contender Farrell with her. They both tired in the lane behind Lovely Bernadette. After another sprint at Churchill, she went to Florida for the winter.

Sailor's Valentine finished fourth, beaten 12 lengths, in Gulfstream Park's Old Hat Stakes in early January. She then ran second, stretching out on the turf at Tampa Bay in March.

“Running in the Ashland wasn't really on the radar," Rashinski said. “We were going to go in an allowance race on the turf. Eddie thought there might be a few horses missing in the Ashland and said, ‘Lets take a shot and go for it.’”

The striking gray responded with a half-length victory over Daddys Lil Darling at Keeneland to earn her way into the Kentucky Oaks.

“She's matured and grown since the fall, and she was a quick filly as a 2-year-old, but she's learned to relax and that's enabled her to get the job done,” Kenneally said of Sailor’s Valentine.

Kenneally and bloodstock agent Peter Kirwin picked the filly out of the 2015 Keeneland September yearling

sale for $100,000. Bred by Curtis Green, Sailor's Valentine is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Sortilege.

“We don't spend a lot of money on horses,” said Rashinski, whose primary business is real estate management. “We can't get Eddie those quarter-of-a-million-dollar horses. But it's not the price of the horse, it's the program they go into. There is no doubt you can be successful with moderately priced horses if you are doing things the right way, and Eddie has had a lot of success with moderately priced horses.”

Kenneally has been training for both partnership entities for a long period of time, and had quick praise for Rashinski, who also raced multiple grade 3 winner Custom for Carlos with Avalon Farm.

“They are very knowledgeable in pedigrees and handicapping,” he said. “They are very knowledgeable about the game.”

“I'm not a horseman,” Rashinski said. “My knowledge of pedigrees is picking the right partners. I try to look at owners that we could sit in the same room with and agree on a mating for a mare.”

Having been to the Kentucky Oaks before, Rashinski is a bit nervous, and a bit realistic.

“I think we'll be a little calmer,” he said. “I used to be able to corner the market on Pepto-Bismol. I used to watch the races by myself, but I'm willing to be with people now. We've been first before and we've been last before. With 14 horses, 13 of them aren't going to win, so if she comes out of the race safe and she runs well, we'll be happy. That's what we're thinking this time around.” BH

McERIN, FIVE FILLIES TAKE ON KENTUCKY JUVENILE STAKESBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

The $100,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Church-ill Downs May 4, the first stakes of the year for

2-year-olds, will feature a field of five colts or geldings and five fillies that each made their first starts during Keeneland's spring meet.

Topping the list in the five-furlong dash is Waterford Stable homebred McErin, trained by Wesley Ward. The Trappe Shot colt impressed in his April 12 debut win over fellow Kentucky Juvenile entrant Go Chiva Go by 7 1/2 lengths. He completed the 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.41.

More than one filly in the field could be a match for McErin.

Amberspatriot defeated males in her first start April 19 going 4 1/2 furlongs. Charles Brown and Donna Hancock's Amberspatriot, trained by John Hancock, passed Baytown Lex and the Wayne Rice-owned and -trained Chateau, who will also return in the Kentucky

Juvenile, near the wire to win by three-quarters of a length in :52.59.

Amberspatriot worked April 28, when she ran three furlongs in :37 flat at Keeneland.

The filly was the first starter and first winner for freshman sire Awesome Patriot, who is also the sire of Waki Patriot, Hancock's other filly in Thursday's race. She is also owned by Charles Brown and Donna Hancock.

Waki Patriot finished second in a dead heat with Baytown Lex in their debut April 7, but managed to turn that around April 20, when she faced her own sex. The filly rushed to challenge for the lead and pulled away to win by five lengths, completing the 4 1/2 furlongs in :52.55.

Ward's other entry was also an impressive winner first time out. Happy Like a Fool flew through 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.85, defeating a field of 11 other fillies by four lengths in an April 9 maiden special weight event. Ward is the breeder and owner of the chestnut Distorted Humor filly.

Freshman sire Violence is also represented by his first winner in the Kentucky Juvenile, with Kirk and

Judy Robison's filly Buy Sell Hold coming in off a 4 1/2-length score over fillies April 20. The Steve Asmussen-trained filly broke sharp and buzzed through 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.84 unthreatened.

Rounding out the field is Randle Glosson's homebred filly Trickizar and Jon and Patience Jazdzewski's gelding Just Be Frank, who worked three furlongs at Keeneland April 29 in :37. BH

HALF TO UNCLE MO JUST MISSES IN DEBUTBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

Highlighted by BloodHorse in Races to Watch, Gulfstream Park's eighth race April 29, a maiden

special weight on turf for 3-year-olds and older, pro-vided a rousing finish.

Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith's Editorial, half brother to sire and champion Uncle Mo, finished a head short of 5-year-old Flag Officer, who broke his maiden in his third start.

Sent off as the even-money favorite, Editorial was a first-time starter for trainer Todd Pletcher, who also sent out third-place finisher Robusto. Jockey Javier Castellano flew in to ride Editorial in his debut.

Palacios Thoroughbreds' Flag Officer was sent to the early lead, where he set fractions of :23.41 and :46.17 through a half-mile, and resolutely held off Editorial in the stretch to complete 7 1/2 furlongs in 1:27.86.

Editorial settled into mid-pack and began his rally just past the three-eighths pole. The son of War Front

battled gamely to the wire to just miss.Calumet Farm's Robusto broke from the gate a step

slow in his debut, and was then steadied down the backstretch. After recovering, the Bernardini colt had a strong kick to finish well for third.

Flag Officer, also a son of War Front, finished second in both of his previous starts over the Gulfstream turf for trainer Jacob Palacios Molina. He is a half brother to California sire U S Ranger. BH

JAPANESE HORSE OF THE YEAR HEADLINES TENNO SHOBy Bob Kieckhefer

Japan's reigning Horse of the Year, Kitasan Black, will tackle a tough field April 30 in the Tenno Sho

Spring (G1) at Kyoto Racecourse. The race, also known as the Emperor's Cup, dates

back to the early 20th century and, at 3,200 meters (about two miles), is one of Japan's premier long-distance races.

Kitasan Black, a 5-year-old by Black Tide, won this race last year en route to victory in the Japan Cup (G1) and Horse of the Year honors. He followed that effort with a second-place showing behind Satono Diamond in the Arima Kinen (G1), or Grand Prix, at Nakayama Christmas Day and won the Osaka Hai, promoted to group 1 status this year, in his 5-year-old debut.

Satono Diamond also returns for Sunday's race in an expected field of 17. The 4-year-old, by Deep Impact, arguably is more of a distance specialist than Kitasan Black, with a pair of wins at 3,000 meters (about 1 3/4 miles) included in his current four-race winning streak.

Cheval Grand comes to the Tenno Sho after finishing third in both last year's edition of the race and the Japan Cup. The 5-year-old son of Heart's Cry came in second to Satono Diamond in their last race in March.

Black Tide, Deep Impact, and Heart's Cry all were sired by Sunday Silence, illustrating the profound impact the American import has had on Japanese racing.

Kitasan Black's trainer, Hisashi Shimizu, said he is not concerned about a seemingly innocuous post 6 draw for the long race, but has his eye on the horse that beat him in the Arima Kinen.

“He's been doing so well, and we just take every race as it comes with him," Shimizu said of Kitasan Black. "But he just seems to get better and better. I'm not thinking of the other horses, but I do want to beat Satono Diamond this time around.”

Christophe Lemaire, who rides Satono Diamond, also nodded to the budding rivalry after trainer Yasutoshi Ikee drew post 4 for his mount.

“My number 1 rival is undoubtedly Kitasan Black, so I'll need to keep an eye on him,” Lemaire said. “I'd like

to ride a similar race to last year's Arima Kinen. Satono Diamond starts slower than Kitasan Black, so I'll probably take up a position around midfield.”

The race is run right-handed around 1 1/2 laps of the outer turf course at Kyoto. The purse of ¥325 million equates to about US$2.8 million and the winner automatically becomes a candidate for some of the world's top distance races if the owner and trainer are inclined to travel. BH

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, [email protected]

EVALUATING KENTUCKY DERBY CONTENDERS' AWDBy Robert L. Losey, Ph.D.

The first Kentucky Derby in which I had a finan-cial interest was when I drew Canonero II in the

economics graduate student pool at the University of Kentucky.

None of us handicapped that Derby well—there were no takers when I immediately offered to trade the eventual winner for any other Derby entrant. I had given short shrift to the facts that Canonero was by the stamina influencer Pretendre, and was the rare Derby horse that had already run the 1 1/4-mile Derby distance.

These days I'm more mindful of the importance of stamina at classic distances, hence the accompanying table that estimates the distance proclivities of this year's Derby prospects.

I estimate Thunder Snow, winner of the UAE Derby, has the highest projected distance proclivity, calculated as follows. Runners by Helmet, his sire, have an average winning distance of 6.9 furlongs. His damsire, Dubai Destination, has an AWD of 9.1. His maternal granddam's sire, Nureyev, has an AWD of 8.0. I adjust the 6.9 AWD figure for Helmet upward because he's a second-year sire.

My statistical analysis suggests that he will have a 7.3 AWD figure as a mature sire. I guesstimate that

the 9.1 AWD for Dubai Destination should be 10% lower (so 8.19) on the premise that if standing in the U.S. he would have a lower AWD. Nureyev's AWD number is used as is.

For Derby horses by mature sires with no foreign sires in their pedigrees, no adjustments were needed. Weighting the 7.3, 8.19, and 8.0 AWDs in Thunder Snow's pedigree by 4, 2, and 1 respectively, then dividing by 7, the sum of the weights, generates an expected weighted-average AWD of 7.65 furlongs for Thunder Snow. He should be able to get the Derby distance as easily as any. See RLLosey.com for more calculations and details.

The weighted average AWDs from the table range from Thunder Snow's high of 7.65 furlongs to Practical Joke's low of 6.89. But the low figure of 6.89 is higher than I expected. Runners by Dixie Union, Gone West, and Silver Deputy exhibited a 6.9 AWD, and those runners included more than a few outstanding routers.

Still, I'd argue that runners with higher projected AWDs have, other things equal, better chances of making a strong run down the Churchill Downs stretch. But of course, other things aren't equal, and readers can decide for themselves how useful my AWD calculations are.

This year's Run for the Roses casts a favorable light on stallions whose first crops are 3-year-olds of 2017. Barring scratches, there will be eight runners by this group, and that augurs well for their sires' prospects. BH s Share this story

NORMANDY FARM'S TWO-HORSE TOUR DE FORCEBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Owner/breeder Nancy Polk, who owns the 250-acre Normandy Farm off Paris Pike

near Lexington, is having some kind of year. Primarily a commercial breeder, Polk sells the majority of horses she breeds and rarely races them. But she has two racing right now: graded stakes winner and grade 1-placed BloodHorse MarketWatch editor Eric Mitch-ell about her new star.

BloodHorse MarketWatch: Sunny Skies' dam, Skyscape, appears to have been acquired privately. How did you find her?

Nancy Polk: Kristin Mulhall and her partner owned the mare. We had gotten her to come to the farm and board with us for two or three years. When they decided to break up the partnership, they asked us if we wanted her. She is a big, pretty chestnut mare and had already produced a stakes winner, so we reached an agreement. Plus we already knew her. She has been nothing but pleasure and we've done really well with her.

BH: Who has the mare been bred to this year?NP: We are going to retire her. She is 22 and

going out with a bang.BH: You bought back Sunny Skies at the 2016

Keeneland September sale for $47,000 and decided to race her. Do you often race your buy-backs?

NP: I am almost exclusively in the business to sell. I'm really not a racing person per se. This was more about me wanting to keep the bloodlines going. Skyscape was getting older and when the filly didn't sell, I thought this was the right thing to do, to see if she could run and then make her a broodmare. So far it looks like she can.

BH: You were at Keeneland for Sunny Skies' debut. Did you have any clue you would see such a performance?

NP: She had been working well and had a bullet, so we felt she had promise. She broke well and moved quickly up to the front, which worried me a little that she was doing too much too soon. But then she just kept going. It was wonderful to watch.

BH: With the success of Daddy's Lil Darling, can you believe what your horses are doing at the races right now?

NP: Seriously, it is unbelievable. I can't get over it. For a person who doesn't really race, I'm up to it, up to my ears.

BH: Are you nervous about the Oaks?NP: Not yet, but I will be. I'm pacing myself. BH
