Mohammed bin Ahmad Al Bowardi, Minister of State for Defence Affairs, visited Emirati company Calidus at the airshow yesterday.

During his inspection tour, he was briefed on the latest multi-role aircraft produced by the company – the B-250.The Minister of State for Defence Affairs also praised the development witnessed by the company, thereby becoming the focus of the attention of major international companies. He spoke with them about the nature of their participation and the most important exhibits, projects and programmes displayed by the company. The B-250 is described as a major breakthrough in its category and the aircraft is the first military fighter to be developed in the UAE. Fully designed from the ground up to address modern warfare requirements in terms of capacity as well as operating cost, the aircraft has already generated significant interest among regional and international players in the segment. The B-250 light attack aircraft is capable of multi-role operations for modern and asymmetrical warfare and also can be used as a trainer. Calidus has brought two such aircraft to the show. One to participate in the flight demonstrations and the other is at static display.Of the several advantages, the foremost is that the B-250 has an outstanding performance in its category and leading-edge avionics and mission systems. Secondly being low operational cost, which is very important in asymmetrical warfare. “The B-250 aircraft is also a very effective basic and advanced trainer aircraft capable of giving the required training to pilots engaged in modern and asymmetric warfare situations,”

Hamdan Abdulla Al Shkeili, Chief Software Engineer, Calidus as told to Nation Shield. The 100 per cent new aircraft is designed as a multirole platform to address successfully current and future field challenges. The B-250, is a carbon fibre aircraft designed to operate in asymmetric warfare and coping with modern threats. The aircraft is not only the first military fighter ever developed in the UAE but is one that will raise the bar throughout the region through its leading edge features. The first Light Attack Aircraft, developed by Calidus, underscores the technological strides the country has made in the aerospace sector over the years.

Calidus selects IFS Applications to support rapid growth

IFS, the global enterprise applications company announced that the aerospace and defence technology company Calidus, based in Abu Dhabi, has selected IFS Applications as its core solution to manage key company operations and manufacturing projects. The IFS solution includes Finance, HR, Supply Chain, Project and Document Management modules to support the development of all major Calidus projects, including the manufacturing of the new B-250 Light Attack aircraft.

Following its rapid company and project growth in the last two years, Calidus recognised the need for a solution, which could scale alongside and meet the requirements of the fast-moving company. IFS Applications will allow Calidus to automate key end-to-end processes to increase productivity, reduce costs, and provide management with a 360-degree view of operations to make better business decisions. The industry-specific and agile nature of IFS Applications removes the need for customisation and a long

implementation timeline. Calidus management selected IFS because of its recognised industry leadership in enterprise software as well as its strong track record with other defence manufacturers. As Calidus is a fast growing technology and development company, it was essential for Calidus to partner with a software provider that could adapt at the same rate as the business. The flexibility and scalability of IFS Applications will scale alongside the aggressive Calidus growth strategy.

The B-250 aircraft is also a very effective basic and advanced trainer aircraft capable of giving the required training to pilots engaged in modern and asymmetric warfare situations

NIMR Automotive, a subsidiary of the UAE’s Emirates Defence Industries Company (EDIC), has announced its first international contract to export its vehicles outside of the MENA region through an agreement with the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces of Turkmenistan.

The announcement was made just ahead of Defense and Security Exhibition 2017, Bangkok, Thailand, where NIMR is exhibiting a range of its leading vehicles, developed to address the threat landscape of Central and Southeast Asia. The agreement, which covers an initial order of NIMR’s leading special forces platform, the AJBAN Long-range Special Operations Vehicles (LRSOV), is testament to the company’s growing international footprint.

Speaking on the importance of the announcement, NIMR’s CEO Dr. Fahad Saif Harhara Al Yafei, said: “Our contract with Turkmenistan represents an important milestone for our company as it validates the quality and competitiveness of our vehicles in the global marketplace. Furthermore, it illustrates the close and enduring relationship between the UAE and Turkmenistan.”The agreement follows the steady growth of NIMR’s relationship with the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces of Turkmenistan. Previously, eight NIMR AJBAN 440A vehicles, provided to Turkmenistan through a government to government arrangement, underwent extensive trials before being operationally deployed in a border security role. Receiving high marks for quality,

durability and mobility against the rough terrain of Turkmenistan’s border region, the Ministry of Defense decided to advance its relationship with NIMR to a formal status, requesting an undisclosed number of AJBAN LRSOVs in bespoke configurations. The vehicles are designed for long-range reconnaissance missions, and are helicopter transportable, capable of accessing all terrains and customisable to accommodate a range of specific equipment.NIMR formally delivered the vehicles in October where they were featured at the Turkmenistan Independence Day Parade. NIMR is the leading manufacturer of light and medium-weight wheeled military vehicles in the Middle East and North Africa region, based in Abu Dhabi.

Given the reductions in Department of Defense budgets it is imperative that every dollar spent on training warfighters be used in a cost efficient manner. Rockwell Collins promotes its latest solutions to offer a cost effective training system that include live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) participants.

“We are committed to solving our customers’ most challenging and mission-critical issues,” said Talel Kamel, Managing Director for Rockwell Collins in the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa. “We can provide them with a true end-to-end package, bringing real platform equipment into the virtual environment”.Recently, Rockwell Collins held an exercise to link several military assets, some live including a real L-29 aircraft and some other virtual including a C-130, a helicopter and a JTAC on the ground to create a scenario in

which warfighters from around the world could train in one correlated simulation environment. Due to the realistic capabilities of the Rockwell Collins technologies, LVC can offer an

interoperable warfare environment, connecting multiple assets through dedicated network architectures to allow warfighters to train as they fight and fight as they train.

Emirates’ 777X to feature dual HGS from Rockwell Collins

Rockwell Collins’ Head-up Guidance System (HGS) has been selected by Emirates Airline for the 150 777X aircraft on order. The HGS displays will be installed for the pilot and co-pilot to provide training advantages for co-pilots and improve safety by requiring less time in head-down operations.

“HGS has proven itself to be a tool that makes flying safer and more efficient,” said Claude Alber, Vice President and Managing Director, Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Rockwell Collins. “You add another level of safety by

having two HGS displays on the flight deck, and it makes for a smoother transition for pilots moving from the right

seat to the left seat.”The dual HGS for Emirates’ 777X fleet will complement other Rockwell Collins systems that will come standard on the aircraft, including the first-ever touchscreen flight displays for commercial air transport aircraft. In addition, Rockwell Collins is providing the integrated surveillance system with MultiScan weather radar, select flight controls and the Avionics

9What has been the reaction to the products Raytheon has on offer this year?Interest in Raytheon has been consistent in the Middle East, but particularly at the Dubai Airshow. My first visit here was at the 2015 edition and then, as now, I have been very impressed in how much interest remained in the Raytheon product-line. What I have found is that we are creating customer interest not only through the products we offer such as the Patriot platform, our radar systems and our cyber defence systems – our overall capabilities but also through our growth path moving forward and what we our investing in. They want to know what we are doing to increase capability and how our products fulfil their needs moving forward into the next generation of defence systems. Events like this are important for us because it is a data-check, to see that what we are doing is what the customers are interested in. As much as we talk to our customers, we spend a great deal of time listening.

What are you hoping to gain from the show this year? What have been the highlights of your stand? We want to ensure our customers understand our “One Raythoen” solution. Though there are multiple businesses within Raytheon, all servicing similar customers, we are able to synchronise and come together for that customer, lay out our products in a way that provides a unified approach. For example, Raytheon Missiles Systems works out of Tucson Arizona, whereas Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems is in Andover Massachusetts – our locations are different and so are our products, but

our customers want a single capability and that is something we are very keen to stress that we are able to do. In terms of the products we have on our stand, we have a digital sand table that goes through our full CONOPS and kill-chain, which highlights the systems we have and shows the affecters we can put into those systems in a total end-to-end solutions. We have also chosen to highlight some of our peers’ products simply to show the customer the versatility of our offering.

While interest in new systems is growing, is the market for your renowned platforms such as Patriot still buoyant? Patriot is at the top of the list when you are talking about blockbuster programmes having been introduced over 30-years ago. Raytheon does not build platforms in general. We tend to build things that are part of larger solutions or that attach to platforms whether it is a ship or a plane – the notable exception being Patriot and that platform continues to grow, develop and evolve over time. The project has embraced technology and has always been on the cutting-edge of air and missile defence operations and procedures. We have 13 partner nations that provide us feedback on how they are using Patriot and we are able to go in and customise it to perform to their specific needs. We have a clear commitment from our corporate HQ to continue investing in the platform – to keep it relevant and make sure it remains the best and most technologically advanced air and missile defence system in the world, there is naturally a lot of

continued interest. What we are seeing now is many of the nation customers we have dealt with for long periods have done a wonderful job of creating a lower-tier air and missile defence capability, with Patriot as the cornerstone. Now many are ready to move into a layered defence with an upper-tier, and some of the great missiles that we produce at RMS, the phenomenal radars and sensors we produce in IDS are becoming a key part of that “One Raytheon” solution.

Raytheon has had a strong presence regionally for a number of year. How do you account for this? We just celebrated the 50th anniversary of our partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the 30th our partnership with the UAE, which is a long time – particularly when you consider that the UAE was only unified 46 years ago. We wear this as a badge of honour. This type of lasting relationship does not occur by chance. They occur because there is a trust between us and our relationship grows constantly. We talk, we share, we listen and at the end of the day, we find commonality to help our partner nations do what they need to do. The Middle East has always been a leader in integrated air and missile defence operations experience base. Since January of 2015, Patriot in the Middle East has successfully intercepted and engaged over 100 tactical ballistic missiles. We are working closely with these partners –supporting them at every turn and ensuring all the capabilities they need so that they can continue to achieve the success they have already had.

Defence systems that put the customer firstNation Shield sits down with Joseph P. DeAntona, Vice President, Business Development and Strategy Integrated Air and Missile Defense and Bruce D. Brown, Senior Manager Business Development Air and Missile Defense Systems about Raytheon’s attendance at the Dubai Airshow and what the future holds.

The C-130J Super Hercules represents the most current generation of the C-130, which has the distinction of having the longest, continuously running military production line in history. The C-130J, the fifth major production variant, was first delivered in 1998.Tony G. Frese, Vice President, Business Development for Air Mobility & Maritime Missions (AMMM) at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company said that the aircraft was the preferred choice for firefighting operations too. “C-130J very well suited for firefighting at night due to the night vision capability,” he said. “Firefighting is indeed an area it is suited for. Obviously the typical missions you see there are medical, oil spill, search and rescue. In addition, we have several customers in oil and gas, and mining, so it is truly a multi-mission aircraft.“Earlier certain platforms were modified to be used for firefighting but now particularly in forest services there are safety concerns when platforms are changed. This aircraft is a great fire fighter. But it is not limited to firefighting because the firefighting equipment that we install can be removed offering flexibility to be used for anything else you may want.”To date, the global C-130J fleet has surpassed more than 1.6 million flight hours and more than 375 C-130Js have been delivered. He said the aircraft is in service in Saudi Arabia. “Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is very good. Saudi has the largest C-130J fleet outside U.S. They are operating two KC 130 Air Refueling Aircraft. They

are enjoying extensive use of those two aircraft,” he said.Frese said the aircraft is safer compared to its competitors as it has four engines. “Since it has four engines, even if one engine is damaged the pilot can land safely on three.”“It is also superior in terms of short field take off performance, turn radius, and manoeuvrability which are our advantages,” he said. “We are not unaware that there are competitors but what this plane can do is not something other planes can match. This J model has new engine, and new power system with 20 per cent more fuel efficiency and 20 per cent more thrust that really pay off in hot condition which you see in the Middle East.”The C-130J Super Hercules provides significant performance improvements

and added operational capabilities that translate directly into increased ground and air combat effectiveness. Some of these attributes include the ability to operate out of 2,000 ft.-long dirt strips in high mountain ranges, to carry tonnes of supplies more than 3,000 miles, and deliver ‘the last mile’ to remote operating bases, which keeps trucks off dangerous highways, and to perform in-flight refuelling, ground fuelling, weather reconnaissance, electronic warfare, medical evacuation, search and rescue, paradrop, special operations and many other missions. Lockheed Martin has submitted a programme for a type design update for the Lockheed Martin Model L-382J airplane, a variant of the proven C-130J Super Hercules to be marketed as the civil-certified LM-100J. The first production LM-100J had its first flight on May 25, 2017. The second production LM-100J had its first flight on October 11. The LM-100J includes all of the proven aspects of the C-130J, including its outstanding operational performance, affordability, flexibility, active production line, robust supply chain and worldwide sustainment providers. “Lockheed Martin has good relations with Ammroc, the Advanced Military Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Centre located in Abu Dhabi. They have a maintenance centre for Hercules.”

C-130J Super Hercules: The world’s most advanced tactical airlifterDesigned and developed with mission flexibility in mind – combat delivery, civil airfreight, air-to-air refuelling, special operations, disaster relief and humanitarian missions – the C-130J is the only airlifter in production with the unique mix of agility and performance to consistently operate in high tempo operations efficiently and reliably.

This J model has new engine, and new power system with 20 per cent more fuel efficiency and 20 per cent more thrust that really pay off in hot condition which you see in the Middle East.”

An example of Saab working to create ‘force-multipliers’ is the GlobalEye G6000 SRSS Swing Role Surveillance System aircraft, a show-stopping scale model of which sat in pride of place at their 2017 stand. “On the second day of the last airshow we were contracted by the UAE Armed Forces to provide them with two of these systems. At IDEX earlier this year we were lucky enough to have had an amendment made to the programme so that we are now providing three examples,” explained Simon Carroll, Vice President and Head of Country Unit Middle East and Africa. The deal for the additional GlobalEye worth AED 866 million to Saab underscored the trust the UAEAF places in Saab as a partner and provider of high-quality platforms. He said, “It is a Bombadier Global 6000 business jet that has been converted to include mission systems. The aircraft has the role of a force multiplier – it will do surveillance of land, air and sea. However, uniquely it can change the role of its mission in the air should the tactical or operational situation change while it is still airborne. Other competitors are less flexible and need to land to be reconfigured on the ground before a new mission.“The other good thing is that it includes the newest generation of radar

technology. It has 70 per cent greater capability in terms of processing and range. We believe that this is why the UAE took such great confidence in going with SAAB. In addition, we have been working with the UAEAF for a number of years and this is an upgrade for them. They are the launch customer for this platform.” Saab’s commitment to practicality, flexibility and adaptability is clear and was underscored when Hans Rosén, President Market Area Middle East and Africa demonstrated Saab’s Air Traffic Management System – a nine-year development project spurred on by the native Swedish need to staff and operate

remote airstrips. It is the first certified technology that allows for remote airport operations anywhere in the world. The system uses a 14-camera system to create a seamless and unobscured 360-degree view of the airfield. “We do not want to alter the operational environment or alter their operational procedure for air-traffic controllers, we want to enhance it. Because we have kept things simple, and in-line with existing modes of operation, we are able to safely manage multiple airfields from a single location.”The system handles data beautifully and provides air traffic controllers with all the relevant information at the touch of a button. But it also enhances the way that they control aircraft by mitigating against solar flare on the screen, tracking aircraft or indeed highlighting any moving objects within the range of the airfield – again on screen. “In this day in age,” said Rosen, “we have to be aware of the fact that there are threats presented by unmanned drones, and that they are getting smaller and smaller. Our system is incredibly sensitive. If there is movement in only four consecutive pixels, the computer picks that data up and highlights it for the controller. This is important because it means the controllers are constantly looking at their field and not at their instrumentation.”

Multiplying capability and problem solving, the Saab waySaab have come to the Dubai Airshow this year with a wide range of products with both military and civil aviation applications. Their platforms have generated tremendous interest and on touring the stand, it was clear that Saab’s approach has tremendous appeal with a focus on and supporting the industry across the board by using technology to maximise and enhance existing platforms.

The need for flexibility and the ability to set up smaller but more efficient rapid reaction forces to be used by joint and often multi-national operations in modern conflict is well recognised. The Saab Deployable Communication and Information Solution (DCIS) system is a modular, scalable and flexible communication infrastructure that can become a fully operative HQ within 48 hours and is expertly positioned to help meet the challenges this environment presents.

Success in today’s fast paced, high-tech environment is often defined by the ability to combine and coordinate resources and distribute accurate information. The DCIS has proven to be one of the most time efficient and agile deployable communications and information solutions available. The flexible and scalable turnkey solution enables robust and secure operations for all kinds of communication needs in any location.“Our smart module design allows the DCIS to be custom fitted to meet the diversity of operational need,”

says Lars Andréason, Sales Director at Saab’s business area Support & Services. “It requires a minimal logistic footprint. The basic system is fully operational only hours after deployment and can in two days be scaled up to a more permanent HQ with capabilities to be enhanced by features like radar, air traffic control, AOC integration, tactical data links and logistical support systems.” The Saab DCIS is designed and developed in cooperation with the Swedish armed forces to face military threats. Great importance has also been given to adapt the system to the new needs that emerge when the enemy does not appear in accordance with established military tactics. When the Swedish Airforce participated in the NATO led Operation Unified Protector (OUP) in Libya the use of Saab DCIS made an important impact.“The Saab DCIS was fully operative within 48 hours after the first Gripen aircraft landed at the NATO base Sigonella on Sicily,” says Andréason. ”The rapid deployment of capabilities limited civilian damage and enhanced

the mission efficiency. There is no other module-based and flexible communication system on the market with such rapid deployment.”During ME03 Sweden had a mission to secure the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in the bay of Aden and has also contributed to successful pursuit of pirates off the coast of Somalia. One of the latest upgrades in the continuous improvement of DCIS is the addition of the Saab TactiCall, which allows interconnection of all communication regardless of radio band, frequency and hardware. This was recently put to test at Aurora 17, the largest military exercise in Sweden in two decades. Part of the exercise, which had 19,000 participants from eight countries, was to replace a demolished airport infrastructure. “Once again DCIS proved to deploy capability. One of the strengths highlighted during Aurora 17 was the ability of integrating legacy equipment and the multiple levels of security, enabling secure communications during a combined force operation,” concluded Andréason.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is one of the most significant technological developments in the last decade. However, where once such equipment was unique to military operations, the use of a new generation of small and cheap to buy UAVs has spread exponentially. This brings a new dimension to contemporary terrorism, with those determined to do harm, seeking different ways of carrying out attacks on civilians.

SteelRock UAV is a distinctive UK miltech company, which has developed market-leading Counter UAV technology for military, security, and public protection applications. The NightFighter is a highly directional, digital Counter-UAV device which uniquely uses narrowcast digital radio transmissions to neutralise hostile UAV threats.SteelRock UAC’s technologies are designed and manufactured in the UK and backed by an expert in-house research and development team with extensive operational military experience. This team now includes expert guidance and support from Former First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, who has joined SteelRock UAV in a senior advisory role.“I’m delighted to join SteelRock UAV’s highly impressive team who are

relentlessly driving their extraordinary UAV and C-UAV business towards domination of this highly relevant and specialist part of the sector,” commented Sir George. “The Dubai Airshow is a pivotal event for SteelRock UAV, where we will be looking for compatible and innovative strategic partners in the Middle East to help commercialise our technology in the region.” SteelRock’s Counter-UAV solution is differentiated from other market players by one key factor - performance. The NightFighter is the most effective Counter UAV system in terms of range (tested up to 3.8km) and frequency coverage. It also provides superior endurance, is reliable in a range of operating conditions, and can be easily adapted or configured for specific customer requirements. It has been pitted against a variety of the latest generation of consumer and custom-made UAVs with a 100 per cent success rate. The company is dedicated to ensuring the

safety of both its operators and the surrounding human environment. As such, rigorous Radiation Hazard testing has demonstrated that the NightFighter is considerably safer to use than existing systems on the market. Exhibiting on the UK Department for International Trade Defence and Security Organisation’s Showcase, SteelRock is formally introducing the NightFighter to the global aerospace sector. The company will also demonstrate its portfolio of multi-platform UAVs, which have an impressive range of up to 170km, boast an endurance of up to two hours and can operate with interchangeable payloads, such as cameras, sensors, emergency supplies, specialist Counter-IED payloads, as well as precision-guided weapons systems, for military customers. The company is looking for compatible and innovative strategic partners in the Middle East to help commercialise the technology in the region.

Raytheon’s Silver Fox is a unique unmanned air system (UAS) that brings a tremendous amount of capability in a small package. The UAS is now available for sale in international markets.

Until now, the low-cost and durable UAS was only employed by U.S. Special Forces, who proved it over and over in operational use during the last decade. Silver Fox is designed for use by expeditionary teams in the most rugged of environments, and is easy to operate. No airport or fancy control system is needed for the drone that can deliver real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, plus the long-range endurance of larger systems. “You don’t even need a runway for Silver Fox,” said Pete Mangelsdorf, Raytheon Unmanned Systems Director. “This UAS is designed to be used in the field by junior personnel who will only need a

small amount of training to successfully operate and maintain it.”With a wingspan of nearly three metres, Silver Fox is powered by standard gasoline engines, and flies at an average mission speed of 65 to 80 km per hour. It has an operating range of about 40 km and can fly up to 10 hours. Setting up the Silver Fox system can take as little as 15 minutes. Flights can be pre-programmed by touchscreen or executed manually and launched from either land or sea.Powered by a tablet computer and

launched with a catapult, Silver Fox can be transported in a small truck or Humvee, and operated by two people. It is also designed for easy care and usually doesn’t need the

manufacturer for maintenance. “Training, storage and maintenance could be done in a small, local facility, which really saves costs and time for its users,” Mangelsdorf added. While military are popular users for Silver Fox, it can be used in many sectors for a variety of missions such as scientific research and security. Civilian usages include pipeline surveillance, meteorological research, large facility security, forestry and agriculture, academic research, and more.

Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and service supplier, is participating at the show, some 85 years since it first set up operations in the region. With around 100 commercial aviation, general aviation and military customers in the Middle East, Air BP’s operations have grown considerably over recent decades.

One of Air BP’s latest customers in the region is the Emirates Airline Flight Training Academy. The company recently won a contract to supply the new Academy with Avgas and fuelled the first two Cirrus SR22 G6 training aircraft on October 31.The company has also recently started supplying fuel to Emirates Airline at São Paulo Guarulhos International and Viracopos Campinas International airports in Brazil. This is in addition to the existing operation at Rio de Janeiro International. The first Air BP fuelled flight, an Airbus A380, departed from São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport bound for Dubai International on November 3. Christian Tabet, Managing Director Air BP, Middle East & Northern Africa, said: “We are delighted with our recent successes but also very proud of our heritage in the region. Over the past 85 years, we have shared our knowledge and expertise, contributing to the development of aviation by fuelling operations here. The Middle East is an important region for Air BP and

the show offers a great opportunity for us to meet with new and existing customers. Our success here is based on our strengths in safe and reliable operations, investments in key infrastructure projects and a deep commitment to our customers.”Air BP continues to support the growth of the Gulf carriers and the region’s airports and currently serves customers such as Emirates Airline as well as flydubai and a host of other international carriers. Air BP markets and sells fuel at 21 locations throughout the region including eight locations in the UAE. This includes the Air BP into-plane operation at Dubai International Airport (DXB), where it has been operating for over 50 years. With one of the largest jet fuel demands in the world, Dubai International Airport is an important location for Air BP. It

is also the busiest airport in the world for international passenger traffic; this year to date it has handled over 66 million passengers. Notably, Air BP took over the operatorship of the Dubai Airport Joint Industry Fuel Farm (JIFF) on July 1, and continues to enjoy a mutually strong collaboration with the airport as

a reliable and trusted supplier, with an emphasis on safety. Air BP has been a major contributor to Dubai Airports’ safety agenda and has championed the airport’s safety marathon programme to help manage airside risks. The company continues to invest in equipment and strategic infrastructure through its joint ventures in the region where it has a presence in the UAE, Iraq, Egypt, Bahrain, Tunisia, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Oman. Recent examples include the investment of almost $23 million by parent company BP and its partners to upgrade and augment the storage facility at Dubai International and an investment to increase storage at Sharjah Airport. Both investments have improved the resilience of the locations and underline the company’s continued commitment to the region.

A series of live firings of the MBDA Brimstone precision strike missile from a Eurofighter Typhoon have been completed successfully, adding enhanced capability to the aircraft.

The trials, conducted from BAE Systems’ Military Air & Information at Warton, Lancashire, UK, form part of a programme of new enhancements, which will be rolled out across the Royal Air Force (RAF), ensuring Typhoon remains at the cutting-edge of combat capability. Brimstone will provide Typhoon with a low collateral, pin-point accurate air-to-surface weapon, further enhancing the aircraft’s already combat-proven swing-role performance. Planning for the next stages of work on Brimstone, including evaluation by the RAF in mid-2018, is now underway ahead of its entry into service.Andy Flynn, Eurofighter Capability

Delivery Director, BAE Systems, said: “To complete this milestone is testament to the expertise and dedication of our people and the value of working closely with our partners. Brimstone will add a low-collateral, high precision strike capability and ensure Typhoon remains fit to meet the threats of the future for decades to come.” Brimstone is part of the Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) package which also includes mission system and sensor upgrades. P3E is the final part of Project Centurion, the programme to ensure a smooth transition of Tornado GR4 capabilities on to Typhoon for the RAF. In total nine firings and nine jettison trials, which began in July, have been completed, with support from the UK Ministry of Defence, MBDA, QinetiQ, Eurofighter GmbH and the Eurofighter Partner Companies – Airbus and Leonardo.

The aim of the trials was to provide weapons integration clearance for operational use. They covered a range of specific release scenarios, testing at various heights, speeds, levels of G-force and in different positions on the aircraft wing and in the launcher. The nine firings have also been used to perform data analysis and models of the weapon’s performance. Further flight trials will take place in early 2018, followed by operational evaluation by the RAF.Operational evaluation of the Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) package with the with RAF’s 41(R) Squadron – the Test and Evaluation Squadron – at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, UK, is continuing and will include live firings ahead of roll out to the UK fleet. The P2E package includes MBDA’s Meteor Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missile and the Storm Shadow deep strike stand-off air-to-surface missile.

As part of a drive to grow Irish exports to the UAE from €1.4 billion (AED 6 billion) in 2016 to €2 billion (AED 8.6 billion) by 2020, a trade mission of over 30 companies is visiting the UAE and Oman this week. Ireland’s An Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) Frances Fitzgerald, who also holds the Minister of Business, Enterprise and Innovation post, leads the mission, organised by Enterprise Ireland.

“There has been a marked increase in Irish exports to the UAE and Oman in recent years and the focus of my department, through our agencies and trade missions, is to support more companies, particularly those who are exposed to Brexit (British withdrawal from the European Union), to achieve further market diversification and

grow their international exports,” said Fitzgerald. As part of the mission, eight companies, including Dublin Aerospace, Botany Weaving, Aerospace Software Developments and the Atlantic Aviation Group, are among exhibitors at the Dubai Airshow.Among the new deals announced, Botany Weaving, a manufacturer of aviation fabrics and carpets, has secured a multi-million dollar deal with a UAE airline to supply interior textiles, while the Irish technology company TIC has signed a contract with a major UAE airport to implement its IATA award-winning software BizTweet, which helps airports with automated passenger communications via Twitter and Facebook.Aerospace Software Development, ASD, has reached agreement with a UAE

airline company for deployment of its software for the tracking of emergency equipment on the airline’s fleet, and a fourth company, Flightman, has been selected by Abu Dhabi-based Royal Jet as software provider for its fleet-wide electronic flight bag deployment. In the financial technology, FinTech, sector, Miagen announced at the show the launch of LeaseGen, a new financial management product for the aviation sector.“In the context of Brexit, expanding the Irish export footprint in markets beyond the United Kingdom is a key priority for Enterprise Ireland,” Julie Sinnamon, the CEO of Enterprise Ireland, said. “Last year, 240 Enterprise Ireland-led companies across various sectors, including FinTech, ICT, engineering, life sciences, aerospace, education and premium foods, exported to the UAE.”

The FA (Fighter Attack) is a new version of the advanced Aermacchi M-346 twin-engine trainer, designed and manufactured by Leonardo’s Aircraft Division. It is an evolution of the dual role FT (Fighter Trainer) version, designed to meet Air Forces’ growing and diversified operational requirements. The FA is an extremely effective and low-cost tactical solution for the modern battlefield, as it offers Air Forces the greatest effectiveness with all the M-346’s AJT (Advanced Jet Trainer) features, including the advanced and pre-operational training capabilities of the basic version.

The present scenarioIn the present operational scenarios, especially in those with a low-medium threat level, often modern and expensive 20/30 tonne class fighter aircraft are used for missions with high operating costs. Generally, these are Close Air Support (CAS) missions that have to be carried out in urban areas and for battlefield air interdiction, as well as for Homeland Security and Air Policing, tactical reconnaissance and support for the personnel recovery operations in combat areas, where the use of low-cost aircraft equipped with radar, a state-of-the-art designator pod, modern and technologically advanced self-protection systems, a state-of-the-art data link and a critical air-to-air refuelling capability would be enough.

A low-cost tactical solutionThe M-346FA, the low-cost multirole

master, was developed from the M-346’s AJT advanced training version already in service with the Italian, Polish and Singapore Air Forces. In comparison with the latter, the FA version’s unique features consist of the upgraded avionics and the two additional wing tip hardpoints (seven in total) in order to have two air-to-air missiles, maintaining at the same time the full dual role capability and the entire extremely advanced Integrated Training System. The

M-346FA will be equipped with a DASS (Defensive Aid Sub System) self-defence system, which includes a Radar Warning Receiver, a Chaff and Flare dispenser as well as a Missile Approach Warning System, with six sensors and a comprehensive 360° protection against any missile threat. The aircraft will be safely able to exchange in real time all the tactical data thanks to a dedicated Tactical Data Link according to the NATO Link 16 or other standards.
