INTRODUCTION This is the day the Lord has made! Christ is risen, and through him all creation is made new! Indeed, “God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34): Christ’s resurrection truly brings life to everyone. We sing hymns of praise, gather around sacred words, and proclaim God’s faithfulness, power, and love in the feast of holy communion. With the women at the tomb, we are astonished, elated, and grateful. We depart with joy to proclaim the good news of God’s endless love.

GATHERING The service begins in darkness. All gather in silence. The acolyte processes forward with lit taper. GREETING The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other.

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. P: Sisters and brothers in Christ, on this most holy morning when our Savior Jesus Christ

passed from death to life, we gather with the church throughout the world in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of Jesus Christ. Through light and the word, through water and oil, bread and wine, we proclaim Christ's death and resurrection, share Christ's triumph over sin and death, and await Christ's coming again in glory.

P: Let us pray. Eternal God, in Jesus Christ you have given the light of life to all the world. Bless this new fire, and increase in us a desire to shine forth with the brightness of Christ's rising, until we feast at the banquet of eternal light; through the Sun of righteousness, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: The light of Christ, rising in glory, C: dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

EASTER DIALOGUE P: Christ died for all, in order that they who are alive may live no longer for themselves

but for him who died for them and rose again. C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: If, then, any are in Christ, they are a new creation; the former things have passed away:

behold, they are made new. C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: For God, who commanded light to shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts, to

give enlightenment concerning the knowledge of the glory of God, shining on the face of Christ Jesus.

C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: Walk, then, as children of light, for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and justice

and truth, and test what is well pleasing to God. C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: For if we live, we live to the Lord, or if we die, we die to the Lord. C: Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. P: You were buried together with Christ in baptism, and in him also you rose again

through faith in the working of God who raised him from the dead. C: Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. P: “Death is swallowed up in victory! O death, where is your victory? O death, where is

your sting?” C: Thanks be to God, who has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Reprinted by permission from The Worship Sourcebook, ©2004, Faith Alive Christian Resources.

CHILDREN’S TIME

Children ages 3-8 are invited to hear a message directed toward them at this time.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:1-6

God’s final word is always “Yes.” Because God’s love is everlasting, God always remains faithful. Ancient Israel is assured that it will be rebuilt and have plentiful crops. The people of God too will ultimately be reunited.

1At that time, says the LORD, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. 2Thus says the LORD: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, 3the LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 4Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall take your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. 5Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. 6For there shall be a day when sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: “Come, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.”

L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Acts 10:34-43

Peter’s sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius, a Roman army officer, is a summary of the essential message of Christianity: Everyone who believes in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the words of the prophets, “receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

34Peter began to speak to [the people]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Matthew 28:1-10

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

1After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON

NICENE CREED We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

INTRODUCTION TO HEALING Our Lord Jesus healed many as a sign of the reign of God come near and sent the disciples to continue this work of healing—with prayer, the laying on of hands, and anointing. In the name of Christ, the great healer and reconciler of the world, we now entrust to God all who are in need of healing.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Uplifted by the promised hope of healing and resurrection, we join the people of God in all times and places in praying for the church, the world, and all who are in need. We pray for ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, ELCA-Northern Illinois Synod Bishop Jeffrey Clements, Rev. Kristin Engstrom, our missionary and our Companion Churches, North Central Diocese of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania and Arcot Lutheran Church of southern India.

A brief silence.

God of resurrection, from the very beginning you give the church the gift of women as your witnesses: as preachers, teachers, and leaders. Open our ears to their proclamation this day and always. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

All your creation praises you—the earth hums, the seas pulse, the stars shine, and the galaxies whirl in glorious harmonies to honor you. Let us hear and blend our voices in the song. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

The countries of the world experience disunity and conflict; we set our minds on fear and greed rather than on your rule of justice and steadfast love. Build up all countries on your cornerstone of peace. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We still weep with those who weep, and mourn with those who mourn. Cradle the fearful, the suffering, and the dying, assuring them of your loving presence. We pray for all those suffering in mind, body and spirit especially those affected by COVID-19 and those whose needs we regularly hold in our hearts. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless the creative and helpful service of worship leaders this day: musicians, ushers, greeters, worship assistants, preachers, readers, and all others who provide welcome and hospitality in our midst. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

Risen Lord, you went ahead of us into the grave and defeated the powers of evil. We remember those who have died. Inspire us to live our lives in this resurrection hope and draw us to you in our final days. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. RITE OF HEALING

P: Sisters and brothers, I invite you to come and receive a sign of healing and wholeness in the name of the triune God.

Silence for meditation.

P: Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake,

send your Holy Spirit upon your servants, drive away all sickness of body and spirit; make whole that which is broken; deliver them from the power of evil; and preserve them in true faith, to share in the power of Christ’s resurrection and to serve you with all the saints now and evermore.

Response: C: Amen.

P: Let us pray. Living God, through the laying on of hands [and anointing], grant comfort in suffering to all who are in need of healing. When they are afraid, give them courage; when afflicted, give them patience; when dejected, give them hope; and when alone, assure them of the support of your holy people. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

C: Amen. The presiding minister reflects on healing. BLESSING

The presiding minister concludes the order for healing. P: Almighty God, who is a strong tower to all, to whom all things in heaven and on earth

bow and obey, be now and evermore your sure defense, and help you to know that the name given to us for health and salvation is the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

C: Amen. PEACE
