Dear Community members,

The Ontario Association of Black School Educators i(ONABSE) is an organization composed of teachers, administrators, educators and others who are determined to make a difference in our community.

The purpose of ONABSE is to promote and facilitate the education of African Canadian students. We wish to establish a strong coalition of African Canadian educators who are directly, or indirectly involved in the educational process. ONABSE is strongly committed to be a forum to exchange ideas and develop strategies to improve educational opportunities for the African Canadian community. Furthermore, we are determined to identify and develop African Canadian professionals who will assume leadership positions in education. Our ultimate goal is to strongly influence public policy and outcomes. If this goal, or any of the others mentioned above appeals to you, then we invite you to become a member of ONABSE.

ONABSE welcomes the brightest, the best and most importantly, those determined to make a difference to become a member and join one of our commissions. Go to our website www.onabse.org to learn more about us.

In order to contact me directly, please send an email to [email protected] so we can work together for a better future.

Thank you,

Warren Salmon President ONABSE

Dear Community members,

In education, teachers are encouraged to combine subjects like math with science into an individual lesson to better prepare students to achieve higher levels of critical thinking. As Parent Commission Chair, the same holds true to ONABSE’s approach to assisting parents. It is important that we integrate the demands of parenting African-Canadian children with the responsibility of empowering the community. One such way of accomplishing this goal is creating and widely distributing this summer camp directory as a resource for parents.

This directory has over forty fantastic summer camps run by members of our community. These camps provide a wealth of educational experiences for youth. There are over a million people of African-Canadian descent in the greater Toronto area, more than enough to fill all these camps and that is our objective. We want these camps to gain the financial support to hire African-Canadian youth as camp counsellors , directors and to inspire them to one day create their own. Taking action on ideas can help solve systemic issues such as youth unemployment if we just support each other and send our children to camps in our community.

Each year thousands of youth embrace the summer with a smile on their face. As parents, let’s share in their happiness, knowing that we have the power to build our community one summer at a time and 2017 was the year we decided to act.

Thank you,

Robert Small

What is camp? For some it is an opportunity to enjoy the hot lazy summers but when I was younger, it was a time to be myself. I had two months of no expectations. I could create a new image among the other children in the camp who knew nothing about me. If I was not a cool kid during the school year, I could become that in camp. If I was afraid

of water, my new friends encouraged me to swim.

Camp was a time of learning. It provided fun and the learning of new skills through creative activities. You learned about team work, enjoyed the outdoors, acted silly, wild and made new friends that you reconnected with every year. You hung out with kids you normally would not have from different parts of the city. It was a chance to explore and get away from the troubles, pressures or boredom of being home or roaming the street. Going to a camp provided me the opportunity to feel older, cooler and accepted.

I would encourage all parents to register their children for an individual camp or try out multiple ones for the summer. Provide your children with the opportunity to make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

Michelle Francis Financial Literacy Coach

“What is a Camp!”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CAMP: A history. There are great new camps in this directory. However, operating a camp for several years and with the same staff, does mean something.

A philosophy. What is the guiding focus of the camp? How is this philosophy integrated into its programs? Do you agree with it?

An emphasis on creating community. Good camps think about how they place kids together to create the most inclusive experience for all.

A well-trained staff and an adequate camper to staff ratio:, An adequate campers-to-staffers ratio is about 10 to 1 for kids ages 8 to 14. The staff should be background-checked, too, with references, an interview, and a criminal-records search.

A communications plan for letting parents know about upcoming events, and for notifying them if a child becomes sick or injured.
