Dear Friends,

With today’s headlines, thoughts of tomorrow might seem bleak. In our unstable world, the stakes are higher than ever, and it becomes increasingly clear that the future needs us now.

All of us share a vision of the world we hope to build, not just for ourselves but for the global Jewish family. Through JDC, we play a vital role in addressing the challenges and opportunities of hundreds of thousands of Jews and others around the world.

With JDC as the lifeline for so many, the future of this organization that we love depends on the actions we take today.

That is why we are thrilled to share an exciting update on the Second Century Campaign (SCC). As of June 2019, we have reached $130 million in gifts and pledges toward JDC’s future.

Your vision, your care, and your generosity are what enables JDC to create that world we all envision, a world filled with opportunity, belonging, and community for all.

You make it possible to dream bigger, and we cannot be more grateful to you for leading by example and undertaking this matter, now and for generations to come.

On behalf of those we serve, we thank you for being part of this legacy.

Warm regards,

Nancy Grand & Jacob Schimmel Co-Chairs

A Message from the Chairs

Building Bridges for InclusionDavid and Merle Horwitz embody a holistic approach to community. Whether in their native South Africa, in Atlanta, GA, or beyond, they have always found meaningful ways to share their Jewish values with the wider world.

In their many years of service and leadership in Jewish communities, David and Merle have worn many hats. They invest their time and energy locally and globally, through the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish National Fund, the United Israel Appeal of Cape Town, and as a prominent Board Member of Jewish Family and Career Services and the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. Their involvement and initiative also led them to help establish the Atlanta Unity Seder, bringing together diverse religious, ethnic, and international communities to celebrate Passover.

As Chair of JDC’s Latin America Committee and past Co-Chair of the Annual Board Fund, David melds his passion for Jewish communities with a talent for garnering support for global needs. In 2017, David and Merle invested in Friends for Healthy Living, a new initiative of Israel Unlimited that brings together Israelis with and without disabilities through sports. This program promotes inclusion and the importance of interpersonal connections – a perfect illustration of the way they see the world.

Their son Sasha in South Africa, and their daughter Ula Zusman and her family in Atlanta are continuing the family legacy of giving and caring for others. The Horwitz and Zusman families represent three generations of thoughtful, bold, and generous leaders who care deeply and seek to change the world for the benefit of all.

David and Merle made their endowment gift to the Second Century Campaign because of their strong belief in JDC’s mission. “Merle and I decided that we would give JDC the resources so they could do the work for the next hundred years, in saving Jewish lives,” he shared. The Horwitz and Zusman families represent the kind of care and dedication that is a legacy of its own, and will ensure a strong future for JDC and the global Jewish family.

Continuing a Family LegacyFor Linda Schottenstein Fisher, giving back to community has not only been a privilege, but a central and natural expression of her values and traditions. Whether in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, or in her current residence, Chicago, she is an active volunteer, leader, donor and fundraiser for a number of causes in the Jewish community and beyond.

Linda follows in the footsteps set forth by her Mother, Frances, and her late Father, Irving Schottenstein, z”l. Frances was always active in her Sisterhood, Hadassah, and The Columbus Jewish Federation. She would gladly talk to those donors that no one else wanted to contact about the importance of giving back to community. Irving, one of nine children of Russian immigrants, supported innumerable business, civic, higher education and charitable organizations in Central Ohio, and the United States and Israel. Always thankful and proud of Columbus and the Jewish community, he gave back not only financially, but through his time, hard work, and innate leadership skills.

The legacy set by her parents has helped Linda naturally forge her own path as a local and national leader. Active in The Jewish United Fund in Chicago, Linda has served on various committees and has been both the Treasurer and an Assistant Vice President. She is especially passionate about the importance of women’s giving and The Lion of Judah Endowment, the rise of antisemitism, day school education, enriching Holocaust Services and The Israel and Oversees Committee. She is also an

active participant of JFNA’s National Women’s Philanthropy. Linda is also involved in cancer research charitable giving, pediatric medical research, and supporting candidates and lobbying for political issues she cares about deeply.

Linda is the proud mother of three children, and five grandchildren. They too, are now involved in Jewish giving and volunteering in Chicago.

Making a commitment to the JDC Second Century Campaign was very important to Linda...and a necessity to help ensure a bright future to the global Jewish Community. Linda shared that “being on the JDC Board was always on my radar. I don’t know of a more vital and important board. We are a family... helping family... it is an honor to sit on this board and have my name on the roster. We have such integrity and make miracles happen. What better way to honor my family’s past, and future, than making sure the JDC mission is fulfilled.”
