The Festival opens with Beethoven’s iconic Ninth Symphony and an exciting, co-commissioned world premiere from Christopher Theofanidis. Tonight’s distinguished vocal soloists have all appeared in Bel Canto programs at Caramoor. All of this, along with over 150 voices from the Collegiate Chorale, commemorates the 70th anniversary of Caramoor and the 40th anniversary of Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

The Calidore make their fourth and final appearance as Caramoor’s Quartet-in-Residence with a program featuring a newly commissioned work by composer Patrick Harlin, a scholar of soundscape ecology and unusual compositional forms, bookended by masters of the chamber genre.

Kuropaczewski returns to Caramoor with favorites of the classical guitar repertoire: a transcription of Bach’s beloved first cello suite, two cherished Spanish gems rooted in the flamenco and parlour music traditions, and works by three Polish composers — an homage to Kuropaczewski’s heritage. Audiences relish the free-flowing synergy with artists in this lush garden.

In this colorful and wide-ranging program, The Knights team up with the inimitable cellist Yo-Yo Ma for music that bursts with individual creativity and reaction to fresh insights. For the young Mendelssohn, immersion in the arts and culture of Italy inspired a new symphony. In Federico II, Giovanni Sollima takes inspiration from the 13th-century Holy Roman Emperor who paved the way for the advances of the Renaissance. In Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul (written for Yo-Yo Ma in 2006) the composer combines two perspectives, simultaneously observing the Earth from afar, as if from the heavens, and also plunging into the turbulent depths of the human and earthly experience.
