Program InformationExtended School Year (ESY) refers to special education and related services beyond the instructional calendar year for students with disabilities. Determinations for the appropriateness of ESY must be made by the student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan) team. ESY is a set of activities designed to assure maintenance of previously learned skills that would be significantly jeopardized if the student did not receive ESY services.

Legal RequirementEducators have a responsibility for development and delivery of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) defines FAPE as special education and related services that are provided at public expense in accordance with an IEP. ESY services may be provided as a part of the plan to provide FAPE.

IEP Team Considerations for ESY ParticipationA student’s IEP team must take into consideration several factors in determining a child’s need for ESY Services. Determinations are made on an individual and yearly basis:

• The likelihood of significant or substantial regression of previously learned critical life skills from the current IEP.

• Limited or delayed recoupment of skills after services resume for the regular school year.

Please Note:ESY services are separate from Summer School programs offered by SCPS. Students with disabilities are eligible to participate in summer school programs if they meet the criteria outlined.

High School GradingStudent grades will be calculated according to SCPS guidelines. Students enrolled in a new course who withdraw by July 1, 2019, may do so without receiving a grade penalty. Students who withdraw after July 1 receive a WF (withdraw failing) or WP (withdraw passing). A WF and/or a WP are considered failing grades.

Grade point average (GPA) is calculated on the basis of all courses for which credit has been earned or attempted, including repeated courses.

The Summer Learning Center at Massaponax High SchoolThe Summer Learning Center consists of a blended learning model that includes credit recovery with teacher led instruction.

Credit Recovery Courses The cost for this option is $125. To register for credit recovery/repeat classes at the Summer Learning Center, click on the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/1DyQBPL655gAMPxh2

By attending our Summer Learning Center at Massaponax High School, an opportunity exists for a student to retake a course in which he/she was previously unsuccessful in earning credit towards graduation.

Credit Recovery allows students who have completed seat time and calendar requirements to earn a credit based on competency of the content standards.Credit Recovery courses are complete courses containing all content for which the student will demonstrate mastery before receiving a grade.

Courses taken through this credit recovery program will be considered repeat courses. Students participating in credit recovery most often need only to recover their lowest semester average. The grades earned will be calculated in the student’s cumulative grade point average.

Students may register for one credit recovery course. Students do not have to register separately for SOL testing for those courses that require an SOL test and/or industry certification. The test is given as a part of the course.

ESY Program InformationExtended School Year (ESY) refers to special education and related services beyond the normal calendar year for students with disabilities. Determinations for the appropriateness of ESY must be made by the student’s IEP team.

IEP Team Considerations for ESY ParticipationA student’s IEP team must take into consideration several factors in determining a child’s need for Extended School Year Services. Determinations are made on an individual and yearly basis:

• The likelihood of significant or substantial regression of previously learned critical life skills from the current IEP.

• Limited or delayed recoupment of skills after services resume for the regular school year.

Please Note:Extended School Year services are separate from Summer School programs offered by Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Students with disabilities are eligible to participate in Summer School programs if they meet the criteria outlined.
