Summer is just around the corner! If you are between the ages of birth and 18 years (or know someone who is), we would like to invite you to join the High Plains Library District this summer as we explore Beneath the Surface! Beginning June 2, stop by your favorite branch library and pick up a book log. There will be three different book logs, one for each age group—PreK (birth-5 years), K-5th grade and 6th-12th grade. Complete the activities on the book log and return it to your library after July 1st for a free book of your choice.

Why is it important to take part in your library’s summer reading program? Based on a recent study done from 2006-2009 by Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, it was confirmed that students who participate in their library’s summer reading program improve their reading skills significantly. The study focused on students who were completing their 3rd grade year and beginning their 4th grade year. Their findings showed that 3rd grade students who participated in summer reading programs scored high on reading tests at the beginning of their 4th grade year and didn’t experience summer learning loss.

GAMING AT THE LIBRARY

Strategy board games and computer games are among the fun programs you’ll see in the High Plains Library District this summer. I recently introduced iPad Gaming at the Erie Community Library and am getting an education from teens and pre-teens in gaming. Social interaction, intellectual focus, and strategic thinking keep the room abuzz during our monthly program. Gaming isn’t just fun and games after all!

FEATURESSummer Reading at Your Public Library

Along with helping to keep summer learning loss at a minimum, participation in summer reading storytimes and programs helps develop peer interactions and teaches kids how to take part in group settings. They get to know their local library and begin to feel comfortable with the staff members who welcome them to all the great programs.

So where will the High Plains Library District’s storytimes and activities take us this year? Maybe we’ll explore beneath the surface of the ocean. Or perhaps we’ll learn about the creatures that live underground or what happens when we plant a seed. We might even explore the tombs of King Tut or learn about forensic scientists and how they dig “beneath the surface” to help solve crimes. Don’t miss out on all the fun at your local library. Programa de Lectura de Verano en su Biblioteca

¡Ya se viene el verano! Si eres menor de 18 años (o conoces a alguien menor de 18 años), nos gustaría invitarlos a que nos acompañen a ir Mas allá de la Superficie con el High Plains Library District. Comenzando el 2 de junio, acérquense a su biblioteca favorita y retiren un registro de lectura. Habrá tres registros diferentes, uno por cada grupo de edad – PreK (nacmiento-5años), K-5to grado y 6to12vo grado. Completen las actividades del registro y devuélvanlo a su biblioteca después del 1ro de julio para escoger un libro gratis de regalo.

¿Por qué es tan importante participar en el programa de lectura de verano en su biblioteca? Un estudio realizado por el programa de graduados de bibliotecología y estudios de la información de la Dominican University entre el 2006 y el 2009 confirma que estudiantes que participan en el programa de lectura de verano mejoran sus habilidades de lectura drásticamente. El estudio observó estudiantes que finalizaban 3rd grado y comenzaban 4to grado y continuaron aprendiendo durante el verano. Además de ayudar a mantener la perdida de aprendizaje a un mínimo, la participación en los programas de lectura de verano mejoran la interacción entre los chicos y estos aprenden a trabajar en grupo. Tienen la oportunidad de conocer su biblioteca local y comienzan a sentirse cómodos con los empleados que les dan la bienvenida a todos los excelentes programas.

¿A dónde nos llevarán los programas y actividades del High Plains Library District este año? A lo mejor exploraremos debajo de la superficie del océano. For people like me whose gaming skills consist of Scrabble and PacMan, playing Minecraft is like taking up scuba diving: It requires a lot of practice to participate–much less be good. Thankfully the pre-teens and teens who come to iPad Gaming are eager to teach their skills. Participants regularly exchange tips and friendly banter during gaming programs. This type of social engagement will be beneficial throughout their lives in academic, personal, and professional settings.

I was surprised at how quickly the gamers settled in for iPad Gaming and must’ve forgotten how much I have enjoyed games—starting with Candy Land, of course—over the years. It is rare for teens to sit down and immediately focus, but gaming is a forum that requires no persuasion. Perhaps it is because teens enjoy playing games, or perhaps it is because gaming is a complex activity that involves symbiotic eye-hand coordination, information processing, decision-making, and taking action. Think of all the things a person does that require these skills. Driving is just one of many, though it may seem like the most important one to many of them at the moment.

As a librarian, I appreciate the comparison made between video games and books in the article “Why Gaming?” by Jenny Levine: “Whole worlds are created, characters are created with backstories, and completed tasks lead to a resolution that makes sense for those characters in that world.” These games are a story written by the players, and this is also true with Teen Board Games where the player is asked, “Do you have the observation, execution, and imagination needed to defeat your competitors and win the night?”

Gaming programs are fun and offer a variety of opportunities for participants to develop skills they’ll use their entire lives, as well as keep them fresh as they get older. I can attest to this firsthand and look forward to learning more about gaming from the teens and pre-teens at the library. Check the calendar for gaming programs in the High Plains Library District.

Explore beneath the surface this summer. Every Tuesday we will be searching out something new to dig into. We’ll be peeking into Hobbit holes, peering into the human mind, traveling under the ocean, searching beneath the earth, digging into subcultures, and searching out our own creativity! All supplies and snacks will be provided.
