From the Rabbi…

ON BEING “JUST JEWISH”

When rabbis & Jewish leaders discuss the

future of American Jewry, they often cite

statistics from the recent Pew Research

Center report, “Portrait of Jewish Ameri-

cans.” One Pew statistic frequently comes

up in these conversations: namely, “41% of young Ameri-

can Jews (“Millennials” or younger) either do not identify

with any particular Jewish religious denomination, or simp-

ly don’t regard themselves as “religiously Jewish”. When

asked by pollsters: “Which Jewish religious denomination

do you identify with most - Orthodox? Conservative? Re-

form? etc…” 41% tend to reply, “None of the above”, often

adding, “I’m just Jewish.” Who are these “Just Jewish

Jews”? Well, pollsters inform us that they’re a diverse

mix: They’re “cultural” Jews, “spiritual but not religious”

Jews, “non-denominational” Jews” or just plain

“undecided” Jews. But regardless, sociologists expect this

“Just Jewish” segment of American Jewry to grow.

Interestingly, the folks at the Pew Center have discovered

that the vast majority of “Just Jewish” young Jews tend to

be quite proud of their Jewishness, and harbor a “strong

sense of belonging to the Jewish people.” In fact, it was rab-

bi Mordechai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Ju-

daism who prophetically anticipated this sentiment 85

years ago. In his book, “Judaism as a Civilization”, Kaplan

maintained that American Jews have been inclined by

America’s dominant faith, Christianity, to base their Jew-

ishness on a foundation of belief. Since one is Christian be-

cause one believes in Christianity, many American Jews

came to assume that one is Jewish because one believes in

Judaism. Kaplan, however, predicted that in our modern

age, Judaism will increasingly need to be based, or “re-

constructed” on another “B” - not that of “Belief” but that

of “Belonging.” Kaplan explained: “…The starting point of

Judaism in the modern age will increasingly be the primal

sense of belonging to the Jewish people… The rest - Jewish

religious practice, Jewish study, Jewish philanthropy &

social action, Jewish music, etc. will flow naturally from this

basic feeling of belonging.” And were he alive today,

Kaplan might add: “Rather than regarding being “Just

Jewish” as a spurning of Judaism, we ought to regard those

who call themselves “Just Jewish” as people who have em-

braced the very starting point of Judaism! (Today, two forc-

es that attract young non-Orthodox Jews to Judaism,

“Chabad” and “Birthright Israel”, are actually animated by

this idea.)

I have always identified closely with Kaplan’s perspective.

For indeed, I too discovered one day that I was “Just Jew-

ish.” It happened at the Western Wall of Jerusalem, which

had just been liberated by Israel in the “6-Day War.”

In December of that year, I, a 19-year-old Yeshivah stu-

dent, joined the masses that were excitedly making their

way to the site of the Holy Temple. Suddenly, I beheld the

massive, crumbling stones of the Western Wall. And much

to my disappointment and chagrin, I felt … nothing! And

then, a heretical question flashed across my mind: “Why

do people insist on believing that there is holiness in this

spot?” The Temple was destroyed 2,000 years ago!”

And then, I stopped looking at the stones and began to

notice the people. I saw Hasidim with their Peyes flutter-

ing, their faces aglow as they approached the ancient

stones; I saw a family of Moroccan Jews in their holiday

outfits marching to the Wall; I saw a tourist in his Brooks

Brothers polo shirt reverently touching it; I saw soldiers,

guns dangling at their sides, leaning against it; I saw a hip-

pie, his hair concealing his face, sitting at its foot; I saw

little girls in long skirts and tights, swaying prayerfully

before it. Suddenly, I saw us, throngs of Jewish people

gathered in that ancient plaza, as a precious remnant, out-

lasting pogroms and inquisitions and holocausts, longing to

return to what we lost. What made this place holy, I real-

ized, was not the Wall; it was the people who have miracu-

lously gathered here, to recapture what once was. And

suddenly, all my doubts about the “beliefs” I had inherited

from my ultra-Orthodox upbringing meant nothing. In

some mysterious way, much more important than my be-

liefs, I felt that I belonged to this motley assortment of

races, languages and denominations called “the Jewish

people.” And I felt that the Jewish people belonged to me. I

felt united across the generations, with our common ances-

tors, who could only dream of coming here.

I became Jewish – “Just Jewish” - on that day. And my

Judaism and rabbinic career still flow from it.

Wishing you a very pleasant summer,

With Shalom,

Rabbi Alvin Wainhaus

Help the Synagogue’s Fundraising Effort Without Spending Money or Volunteering?

Absolutely! Read How

Do you go grocery shopping? We all do. Do you shop at ShopRite, Stop & Shop or Whole Foods? Most of us do even if it is for a few things. Do you buy gas at Stop & Shop? Many of us do that, too. Then you can help Or Sha-lom raise money with very little effort on your part. Just buy gift cards from Or Shalom and use them to shop at either ShopRite, Stop & Shop or Whole Foods. The gift cards are the same as cash and if you do not spend the entire value of the card, you get it back and can reuse it. Or Shalom earns 5% on every card that you buy from us. Think about it… if you spend $600 a month, that is $30 to Or Shalom or $360 per year. Now if just 10 families partici-pated, that is $3600 per year, but what if 50 families partici-pated…. $18,000 would be raised! And no one has to spend any additional money to make that happen! Gift Cards (Scrip) are available during office hours M-T 10-4 pm and Friday until 3, or we can mail them to your home. Call the office for more information. 203.799.2341

From the President…

The Annual Meeting is over, the votes tallied and recorded, the installation complete, and I now look at beginning a two-year stint as the President of Congregation Or Shalom, a simultaneously exciting and sobering prospect. But before commenting further, I should like to extend my sincere thanks for the confidence and trust that our Leadership Commit-

tee, Board, and Rabbi Wainhaus have shown for sug-gesting that I would be a good fit for this job…or, as a close friend and colleague was fond of saying, an op-portunity to excel. And I am both humbled and hon-ored that our membership sees it the same way. Thank you to the many of you who have, over the past several weeks, offered congratulations and well wish-es. My wife, Tova Clayman, and I have been members of Or Shalom for almost 25 years, with a three-year hiatus in Jupiter, FL when we both worked for Sikor-sky Aircraft. While there we belonged to Temple Beth David in Palm Beach Gardens where we got our first taste of synagogue leadership as co-chairs of the Adult Education Committee. Returning to Connecti-cut and Or Shalom, we both continued our involve-ment with various committees. For Tova, it was and still is Sisterhood. For me, it’s been Ritual, House, Finance, and By-laws. I am also a graduate of the USCJ-sponsored IMUN program for lay leadership. Professionally, I am an engineer, a pilot, and retired military officer with both US Navy and Army service time.

I used to race bicycles. At the start of a long road race, riders gather in a tight group at the starting line awaiting the signal, beset with varying degrees of confidence, concern, reviewing a mental picture of the race’s route, the tactics planned, and trying to forecast what might (usually) be required to adapt to unex-pected circumstances over the course of the race. This is exactly how I feel today as the newly elected President of our Synagogue. I sense the same pre-start tension coupled with an anxiousness to get mov-ing, to set the pace and settle in to the task at hand, and to deliver nothing less than a personal best. Or Shalom is a very special place with a very special community that makes it go. From a high altitude perspective, I see a responsibility to ensure that Con-

gregation Or Shalom continues to be a focal point in our lives, to meet the range of needs that we have come to expect or even to aspire to, and to be something to which we want to belong. Meeting this responsibility is the challenge that lies before me and my fellow Board members; indeed, it is our raison d’être. Measuring up to that purpose, dear friends, is my pledge to you. The starting gun has sounded.

I would be remiss to not offer my greatest thanks to all of the outgoing Board members. Your help is greatly appreciated. To the new Officers and Directors and to our office staff, thank you for your commitment to perpetuate the legacy of our Synagogue and participation in forging a bright future. I look forward to working with all of you. And finally, to Marc Franzman, our immediate past president…your superb leadership is a mod-el for me. It is with deep gratitude and respect that I congratulate you on a job well done.

B’shalom,

Bob Spaulding

Tax Benefit for members Age 70 1/2 or older If you are age 70½ or older by the end of the year, 2019, and have traditional IRAs, and are required to take a Required Minimum Deduction, RMD, and if the new Standard Deduction exceeds your itemized deduc-tions, consider making your charitable donation, before December 31st, via a "Qualified Charitable Distribu-tion" from your IRA. Such distributions MUST be made directly to the Syna-gogue (or any charity) from your IRA administrator to qualify as part of your RMD. The amount of the con-tribution is not included in your Adjusted Gross Income which will result in both a State & Federal tax savings by reducing the amount of your taxable portion of the required minimum distribution and still allow you to take the Standard Deduction. Even if your itemized deductions for Medical, Taxes, Mortgage Interest and Charitable Contributions (without including the amount contributed via a "Qualified Charitable Distribution") exceed the Stand-ard Allowance it may save you Federal Income Taxes and by reducing your Adjusted Gross Income taxable portion could potentially save you some Connecticut Income Taxes.

ARE YOU ABLE TO BE A MINYAN MAKER?

Dear Members,

As you know, it takes ten men/women of the

Jewish faith over the age of 13 to create a

“Minyan”, a Jewish prayer quorum. Now, at

most of our worship services we are blessed

with a Minyan in attendance. However, there

are times when we’re informed that a member of the Syna-

gogue is planning on coming to say Kaddish for a loved one,

and yet we are not confident that a Minyan will be present for

him/her! Well, it was for that reason that a few years ago, our

Ritual Committee invited members of our Congregation to

join a “Minyan-Makers” email list and thereby try to ensure

the presence of a Minyan for our Congregants. And I must

say, the “Minyan-Makers” email list has clearly proven to be

an effective tool! HOWEVER, it’s also become quite clear

that our Minyan makers list is too small (It currently numbers

approximately 23 members ).

Thus my appeal: Are you able to be a “Minyan Maker”?

Please know that including your name on the “Minyan Mak-

er” email list doesn’t imply an expectation that you’ll respond

affirmatively each time we send out an appeal for a Minyan; it

just means that you’ll try to help. If you are interested, please

call the office with your email address. G-d bless you! Todah

Rabbah!

Rabbi AW

The FY2019/2020 Annual Campaign is starting, and needs

help from everyone as it is our largest single fundraiser, and

very important to all of us.

It is a large part of how we all help keep dues lower than other

local Congregations. It allows us to distribute the financial

burden voluntarily, to those that may be better able to afford

it, and lessens the burden on those who may be less able. Par-

ticipating is indeed a Mitzvah.

The Annual Campaign Committee asks that you search your

hearts and your souls to please contribute as you see fit. Eve-

ry contribution is important, no matter the size. Every contri-

bution helps bring us closer to our goal, which this year is

$36,000. Your contribution helps to keep the Synagogue fi-

nancially secure and continue to provide the services for the

community and Congregation, and is sincerely appreciated by

all. If everyone contributes the same amount they did last

year, we will make the budget (more is always appreciated).

This year we are continuing to ask everyone to get your

pledge in before the summer gets into full swing. Remember

that you can spread your actual payments out – for now we

are just looking for your pledge.

NOTE TO BUSINESS OWNERS: This year we are going to

try something new. We are looking for corporate matching

sponsors. For each corporate sponsor, we will run a matching

campaign based on the funding level – this is a GREAT ad-

vertising opportunity. Your Company Name will get show-

cased in the appeal in all of our publications and we will also

include an ad for your company in the advertising section. For

most businesses, this will also make the contribution tax free

– but check with your accountant. Please call the office and let

Rachel know about your interest.

Thank you in advance for your participation and generous

contributions.

The Annual Campaign Committee

Annual Golf Tournament

The annual Golf Tournament was held at

Orange Hills in Orange on June 3. It was

a beautiful sunny day. We had 30 golfers and another 6

who took place in the new pitch and putt activity. They

raised about $5500 for the Synagogue. A breakfast of

bagels and lox and lunch catered by Abels was enjoyed

by all. Congratulations to the first place team, Marc

Franzman and his guests and second place was taken by

Steve Atlas, Steve Moses and their guests. Thank you

to the Sponsors, Donors and Patrons for making this

event so successful.

The Social Action Committee thanks all members of

the congregation that contributed to our Mitzvah of

the Month projects with their generosity. Zumba

participants have also been very helpful in supporting

this program. The first Mitzvah of the month for the

New Year 5779 was Operation Isaiah. We collected

more than 4,000 pounds of food for the Jewish Fami-

ly Service Food Pantry. In October, we collected

coats, hats, scarves and mittens for the homeless. In

November we gave non-perishable food to the Jew-

ish Food Pantry and the Orange Food Pantry. Addi-

tionally, we gave each group supermarket gift cards.

In December we collected blankets and tarps for the

homeless. In January, school supplies were donated

to students in the New Haven Public Schools. In Feb-

ruary, our Tzedukah box overflowed with books for

New Haven Reads. In March we collected many

prom dresses and suits that were donated to My Sis-

ters Place, a consignment shop that supports a shelter

for women and children. We donated boxes of Mat-

zo, Passover food and other non-perishables to Jew-

ish Family Service Food Pantry. In April, we collect-

ed toiletries for the homeless. In May we donated a

gift card and diapers and wipes to the Yale Family

Advocacy Center. Our collections will begin again in

the fall with Operation Isiah for non- perishable food

or monetary contributions to be donated to The Jew-

ish Family Service Food Pantry, before Kol Nidre on

October 8th.

Volunteers continued to fulfill our monthly obliga-tions at Spooner House and Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen. Thanks to all who participated. If you would like to be included in either one of these pro-grams, please contact Nancy Kline at [email protected]. Evan Hollander was selected as the recipient of the Warren Weiswasser Scholar-ship Fund this year.

We are participating in the Jewish Community Alli-ance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR). We have resettled four refugee families. They continue to need financial support and jobs as they become ac-customed to life in Connecticut. The new JCARR website is live! You can see it here: https://jewishnewhaven.org/refugee-resettlement. You can easily make online donations now on the home page of the JCARR website or directly here: https://jewishnewhaven.org/refugee-resettlement/give. Re-settlement expenses are especially high in the first couple of months of a new family's settling in to our

community. We pay interpreters until the family gains proficiency in Eng-lish. We’re looking for a volunteer to help with JCARR’s website and Face-book page, photos, etc. To sign up, contact please contact Kim Braun, Vol-unteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or [email protected] or (917)733-7445 - texts are wel-come.This project is coordinated by Nancy Kline at [email protected].

The Social Action Committee has partnered with Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers (IVCG) to pro-vide transportation to senior members of our con-gregation to medical appointments. IVCG is a non-profit organization that supports seniors (60+) who want to continue living in their own home. Financial support for IVCG comes from Agency on Aging of South Central CT, civic groups, foundations, and individuals. This free service is available to resi-dents in towns of greater New Haven regardless of religious affiliation, ethnicity or economic circum-stances. Requests for a ride need to be made one week in advance once a registration form is submit-ted to IVCG. You can also request an Or Shalom IVCG volunteer to drive you. To register for this service, please contact Joe Shapiro at [email protected] or call 203-799-2108. Or Shalom Members who would like to volunteer to provide rides to doctor appointments are encour-aged to apply. IVCG carries CIMA insurance which covers all registered volunteers. After a background check and a training session with staff, volunteers will be matched with seniors for this service. To volunteer to provide rides for seniors to doctor ap-pointments, please contact Roger Tausig at [email protected] or call 203-605-5151. The Chesed Project is a network of volunteers who bring to life the meaning of Chesed-- kindness -- by providing assistance to Synagogue members facing difficulties related to health, loss and grief. Coordinated activities may include phone calls and visits to congregants. These are friendly visits to congregants who may be home-bound or in a facility. Shiva support involves bringing a challah and Shabbat candles to the newly bereaved. We can also provide rides to services for those members who request them. We have a list of volunteers to assist us in this project, on an occa-sional basis. If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact project coordinator Civi-anne Bloch at [email protected]
